Apple hits record revenue in India, says CEO Tim Cook

Cupertino: Apple has achieved an all-time revenue record in India in the September quarter (Q3), said its CEO Tim Cook, adding that there is a lot of headroom to grow in the country where “a lot of people are moving into the middle class”.

During the company’s quarterly earnings call late on Thursday, where Apple said it posted quarterly revenue of $89.5 billion, the iPhone maker grew in very strong double digits in India in the July-September quarter (which also new iPhone 15 series sales which started on September 22).

“We achieved an all-time revenue record in India as well as September quarter records in several countries, including Brazil, Canada, France, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Vietnam and more,” said Cook.

“In services, we set an all-time revenue record with double-digit growth and ahead of our expectations,” he added.

In response to an analyst question on momentum in India, Cook said that India is “an incredibly exciting market for them and a major focus” for the company.

“We have a low share in a large market and so it would seem that there’s a lot of headroom there. We see an extraordinary market — a lot of people moving into the middle class,” the Apple CEO noted.

“Lots of positives, we put two retail stores there and they are doing better than we anticipated — it’s still early going but they are off to a good start and I couldn’t be happier with how things are going at the moment,” he added.

Apple’s revenue in India hit nearly Rs 50,000 crore in FY23, with sales increasing 48 per cent to Rs 49,321 crore and net profit rising 76 per cent to Rs 2,229 crore.

The company recorded its highest-ever quarterly shipments in India, crossing 2.5 million units, in the third quarter (July-September period) this year.

Luca Maestri, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Apple, said that the company reached a September quarter record on iPhone, driven by strength in emerging markets.

“Our total installed-base of active devices, reached an all-time high across all products and all geographic segments. Thanks to our high levels of customer satisfaction and many new customers joining our ecosystem,” said Maestri.

“We are expanding our direct presence with new Apple Retail Stores in India to online stores in Vietnam and Chile,” he added.

PM Modi to carry Ram idol to new temple: Sources

Ayodhya: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may shun protocol and walk a distance of more than 500 metres on foot during the Ram Temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024, according to sources.

The temple trust is set to offer the prestigious role of carrying the existing movable idol of Lord Ram from the makeshift temple site to the sanctum sanctorum of the newly constructed Ram Temple to the Prime Minister during the ceremony.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is likely to accompany him. RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat would be among dignitaries present on the occasion.

According to trust sources, the main puja will be presided over by Modi as ‘yajman’ (host organising the Hindu religious ceremony) when ‘pran pratistha’ (religious proceedings to conducted before the idol opens eyes for the first time) takes place.

Leading priests from various parts of the country will participate in the consecration ceremony.

While ‘chal murti’ that is being worshipped at the existing makeshift temple will be placed at a sacred spot after prayers, one of the three five-foot idols being sculpted at the moment, would be placed as the resident deity (achal murti) in the sanctum sanctorum.

The ‘chal murti’ will keep making a comeback alongside the achal (permanent one) on auspicious occasions through the year.

The trust is yet to finalise which idol among the three is going to be placed in the sanctum sanctorum on the ground floor as the main deity.

The sources said one among the two idols which have been carved out of the finest quality marble from Rajasthan or dark colour granite from Karnataka was going to be placed in the garbha-griha.

“But the official announcement is going to be made later,” said a source.

The second one will be placed on the first floor once it is ready while on the second floor of the temple, a Ram Darbar would be set up.

The trust has planned an elaborate consecration ceremony which will commence the day after Makar Sankranti next year.

The new idol would be given a bath with the water from Saryu and other holy rivers, and taken out symbolically within the Ayodhya city.

The trust is going to send out invites to about 8,000 individuals across the country out of which 3,500 would be sent to saints and seers of various temples, mutts and members of various religious bodies and outfits while the remaining ones will be sent to political and other dignitaries, top industrialists, businessmen, professionals (leading doctors, advocates, engineers, actors among others) and Padma awardees.

Heads of some states and countries will be also invited for the main event scheduled for January 22 of next year.

Family members of some kar sewaks who died in police firing during the Ram Temple movement would also be invited.

The trust is planning to create seating arrangements for all the guests who would be sent an official invite (8,000 individuals) to attend the key religious proceedings while live-streaming of the ceremony would be done through various mediums for those who are not able to make it.

The temple trust office-bearers have issued an appeal for the individuals and families to plan their visit only after January 26 when the rush of the VIPs, invited guests and dignitaries starts subsiding.

'Kemon Acho' To 'Kem Cho', Gujarat Minister's Unique Investment Pitch In Bengal

'Kemon Acho' To 'Kem Cho', Gujarat Minister's Unique Investment Pitch In Bengal

Mr Sanghavi said Gujarat is a role model for development.

Kolkata:

Emphasising the similarities in the style of celebrations as well as language between West Bengal and his state, Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi made a pitch for investment at a roadshow which was part of a Vibrant Gujarat event in Kolkata.

“Just like we say kem cho, you say kemon acho (both mean “how are you”) when you meet someone familiar,” Mr Sanghavi said, leaving the audience in splits.

Addressing a gathering of industry representatives and investors, the Gujarat minister, who holds the Home and Industries portfolios, among others, said, “I have visited several parts of West Bengal and I have seen so many similarities between Gujarat and the state. Gujarat and Bengal can march ahead together.”

During the interactions, Mr Sanghavi shared insights into the success of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit and emphasised that Gujarat has become a role model for development and a preferred investment destination over the past two decades.

He also highlighted Gujarat’s cumulative FDI of $55 billion between 2002 and 2022, attributing the state’s attractiveness to its policy-driven approach, including initiatives like Gujarat Renewable Policy 2023, Atmanirbhar Gujarat Scheme 2022, Integrated Logistics and Logistics Park Policy 2021, Electric Vehicle Policy 2021, Tourism Policy, and Textile Policy.

Mr Sanghavi also spoke of Gujarat’s industrial development, specifically highlighting special investment zones such as Gift City, Dholera, and Mandal-Bechraji, as well as Petrochemicals Investment Zones, Dream City, Sanand Manufacturing Hub, Logistics Park, Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail to stress that the state has world-class infrastructure.

Urging investment in Gujarat and encouraging active participation in the nation’s developmental journey, he also invited the audience to participate in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

Mr Sanghavi’s pre-scheduled visit comes close on the heels of Tata Motors’ announcement on Monday that the arbitration proceedings over the loss of its capital investment made in the Singur Tata Nano project had gone in its favour and it could now recover Rs 765.78 crore plus interest from the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation.

Tata Motors had decided to shift the project from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand in Gujarat, despite the factory being in an advanced stage of construction, after protests over land acquisition. The West Bengal government had won the case over the land for the project in the Supreme Court, which had termed the land acquisition for the project illegal.

In a veiled dig, Mr Sanghavi said, “I cannot tell you to take your business to Gujarat because, if I do that, you will face problems here. But consider setting up businesses in Gujarat. I can tell you that you will recover the value of every penny of investment in Gujarat.”

Scarlett Johansson sues AI app developer for voice cloning

San Francisco: Actor Scarlett Johansson is reportedly suing an app developer for using her name and AI-generated version of her voice in an online ad.

As reported by Variety, the 22-second ad showed Johansson behind the scenes while filming ‘Black Widow’, where she says “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me.”

Later, an AI-generated voice meant to sound like the actor takes over, saying “It’s not limited to avatars only. You can also create images with texts and even your AI videos. I think you shouldn’t miss it.”

The ad was for an AI image editor, called Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar, the report mentioned.

Convert Software — the developer behind the app — included text at the bottom of the ad that read: “Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person.”

Representatives for Johansson were quoted as saying in the report that the actor was never a spokesperson for the app.
