Explained: Why Afghanistan Embassy Has Closed Its Operations In India

Explained: Why Afghanistan Embassy Has Closed Its Operations In India

India will take control of the Afghanistan embassy in a caretaker capacity.

New Delhi:

The Afghanistan embassy in India today suspended operations citing an inability to serve the country’s interests and a shortage of staff and resources. India will take control of the embassy in a caretaker capacity, the statement by the embassy said. The announcement comes two years after the elected government in Afghanistan was overthrown by the Taliban.

While India does not recognise the Taliban government, it had allowed the Afghan embassy to continue operations under the ambassador and mission staff appointed by former president Ashraf Ghani, who fled Kabul in 2021.

Earlier this year, the embassy was rocked by a power struggle in the wake of reports of the Taliban appointing a charge d’affaires to head the mission, replacing Mamundzay. Following the episode, the embassy came out with a statement that there was no change in its leadership.

The tussle for power had erupted after Qadir Shah, who was working as a trade councillor at the embassy since 2020, wrote to the MEA in late April claiming that he was appointed as the charge d’affaires at the embassy by the Taliban.

But the embassy’s closure statement said it “categorically refutes any baseless claims regarding internal strife” among embassy staff, and denied any diplomats were “using the crisis to seek asylum in a third country”.

Here are the reasons listed by the Afghanistan embassy was closing its operations in India:

“Lack Of Support From India”

In its statement, the Afghanistan embassy alleged an absence of support from the Indian government. It claimed that this hindered their ability to carry out their duties effectively. “The Embassy has experienced a notable absence of crucial support from the host government, which has hindered our ability to carry out our duties effectively,” the statement said.

The Indian government has not yet reacted to these allegations.

Failure To Serve Afghanistan’s Interests

The embassy acknowledged that they had failed to serve the best interests of Afghanistan and its citizens.

“We acknowledge our shortcomings in meeting the expectations and requirements necessary to serve the best interests of Afghanistan and its citizens due to the lack of diplomatic support in India and the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul,” it said.

Staff Shortage

The Afghan embassy said that there had been a significant reduction in personnel and resources due to unforeseen circumstances, making it challenging for them to continue operations.

“The lack of timely and sufficient support from visa renewal for diplomats to other critical areas of cooperation led to an understandable frustration among our team and impeded our ability to carry out routine duties effectively,” the statement said.

India is yet to recognise the Taliban set-up and has been pitching for the formation of a truly inclusive government in Kabul, besides insisting that Afghan soil must not be used for any terrorist activities against any country.

Earlier this week, sources in the foreign affairs ministry had said that they are keeping an eye on the crisis and also examining the authenticity of the communication about the Afghanistan embassy closing doors.

After 350 Years, Chhatrapati Shivaji's 'Tiger Claw' Set For India Return

After 350 Years, Chhatrapati Shivaji's 'Tiger Claw' Set For India Return

The ‘wagh nakh’ is expected to be housed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum.

Mumbai:

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legendary wagh nakh, the ‘tiger claw’ weapon he used to defeat Bijapur sultanate’s general Afzal Khan in 1659, is set to return to Maharashtra from London in November.

This year marks the 350th anniversary of the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The tiger claw weapon will be brought back from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum for a three-year exhibition to commemorate the occasion.

Maharashtra’s Culture Minister, Sudhir Mungantiwar, will arrive in London on Tuesday to sign an agreement with the museum for the return of the weapon.

“In the first phase, we are bringing the wagh nakh. It should be brought here in November, and we are signing an MoU for that. Our effort is to bring it on the day when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj disemboweled Afzal Khan,” Mr Mungantiwar had said earlier this month.

The wagh nakh is expected to be housed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum in south Mumbai.

The Maratha victory at the Battle of Pratapgad in 1659 was a turning point in Chhatrapati Shivaji’s campaign to establish the Maratha Empire. Despite being outnumbered, the Marathas defeated the Adilshahi forces led by Afzal Khan, boosting Chhatrapati Shivaji’s reputation as a brilliant military strategist.

Chhatrapati Shivaji killed Afzal Khan at the foot of Pratapgarh fort in present-day Satara district in Maharashtra. This episode has since become a part of folklore, symbolising Chhatrapati Shivaji’s bravery and cunning in defeating a much larger and more powerful enemy.

“When Afzal Khan stabbed Shivaji Maharaj in the back (during the meeting), Shivaji Maharaj used a ‘wagh nakh’ to kill the cruel, demonic Afzal Khan,” Mr Mungantiwar said.

“The wagh nakh is a source of inspiration and energy for us. This year also marks the 350th anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation,” he added.

The authenticity of the ‘wagh nakh’ is under debate in Maharashtra. History expert Inderjit Sawant has pointed out that the Victoria and Albert Museum website states that Chhatrapati Shivaji did not use the weapon.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has also questioned the authenticity of the ‘wagh nakh’.

New Delhi:

Two men died, and two others were seriously injured after fierce fighting in Delhi’s outer district on Saturday night, and the police argued for hours over jurisdiction with a dead body lying in a pool of blood on the road.

Two groups clashed near Kargil Colony and Samta Vihar Colony of Mukundpur in outer Delhi over a dispute on phone snatching. The men attacked each other with knives, and bullets were also fired, leading to the deaths.

The injured were sent to Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital in Jahangirpuri for treatment, from where they were referred to a higher centre as their condition worsened.

A man named Azad was stabbed to death, and two others sustained serious injuries. Another man, Himanshu, was shot to death.

Family members of the victims allege that police were informed about the fight but didn’t reach the spot in time.

Some men had called Himanshu to a small bridge between Samta Vihar and Kargil Colony. Himanshu reached there along with some friends, and was attacked by men who were already there.

The police then argued over jurisdiction as there are some places between Burari and Bhalswa Dairy police station areas where, due to a border dispute, the police have often been accused of negligence, leading to several incidents of crime.

Cops from the two police stations argued for several hours about whose jurisdiction the spot of the crime fell under, eventually settling that it was Bhalswa Dairy. The body of a young man was lying soaked in blood on the road for hours as the police argued.

US admits Iran not seeking nukes

While US politicians continue to capitalize on Iran’s exaggerated nuclear threat for domestic political gains, the US State Department set the record straight on Iran’s nuclear program. It said, “It is assessed that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program at this time.”

The Pentagon assessment came in a report dubbed “Strategy for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction,” which also addressed other countries possessing nuclear programs.

The report is the latest confirmation that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and does not pose any threats to international security despite allegations to the contrary.

Despite the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, Iran has extensively cooperated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to allay concerns over its nuclear activities. Recently, the top nuclear official of Iran has said that the country is under international scrutiny more than any other country in the world.

Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI), said on Wednesday that it is not reasonable for Iran to be inspected 10 times more than other countries while the size of Iran’s nuclear facilities is about 2% of the world’s nuclear facilities.

In an interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday, Eslami said that Tehran has good cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He also noted that at least 120 inspectors of the Agency are accepted and actively working within Iran whereas some are rejected which is totally Iran’s rights.

The AEOI head added that Tehran keeps an eye on the performance of inspectors which is its right whether to accept or reject some of them.

“The inspection operations that the Agency conducts in Iran are about 25% of the inspection operations that it conducts around the world, it is not logical that we are inspected more than 10 times by other countries,” he complained.

Nevertheless, some in the West continue to level unfounded accusations against Iran, with some even opining that Iran is already a nuclear threshold country.

And US officials seem to have fallen for this kind of propaganda. In remarks before the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, US President Joe Biden implied that Iran might be willing to acquire nuclear weapons. He said that the Americans “remain steadfast in our commitment that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.”

This kind of messaging runs counter to the countless reports by the IAEA which refute in no uncertain terms that Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon.

The IAEA has so far produced dozens of reports all confirming the peaceful peace of Iran’s nuclear program. But these reports have fallen on deaf ears in the West.

In addition, Iranian officials, including the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, have time and again said that Tehran is not seeking nuclear weapons as they run counter to Islamic teachings, which prohibit the use and production of such weapons given their inhumane consequences.

WB: Mamata directs officials to raise vigil to prevent dengue deaths

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has held a review meeting over the dengue situation in the state

WB: Mamata directs officials to raise vigil to prevent dengue deaths

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has held a review meeting over the dengue situation in the state and directed officials to raise vigil to prevent any more deaths due to the vector-borne disease.

She telephoned Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi and gave requisite directions to all officials attending the meeting on Saturday.

“Intermittent rainfall will continue for several more days. So, all districts, especially the coastal ones, must be careful. Work is being done against dengue but consistency must be maintained. I have a problem with my knee, so I can’t go out but I am keeping a watch,” Banerjee said during the meeting.

The CM is currently recuperating from a left knee injury that she sustained during her foreign trip to Spain and Dubai.

Other than Dwivedi, all district magistrates, the commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), superintendents of police (SPs) and CMOHs of all the districts were present in the meeting.

Senior officials of the Irrigation and Waterways, Disaster Management, PHE, UD&MA, P&RD, PWD and Health departments were also present at the meeting.

She directed them to ensure that water was cleared from inundated areas on a war footing across all municipalities and panchayats.

More than 30 people have died in various districts of West Bengal this year due to dengue.

Inter Miami’s uncertainty with injured Lionel Messi’s participation

Once more, this trend continued on Saturday as the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was left out of the lineup for a crucial game against New York City FC.

Inter Miami’s uncertainty with injured Lionel Messi’s participation

Once more, this trend continued on Saturday as the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was left out of the lineup for a crucial game against New York City FC.

Fort Lauderdale: Here’s how it goes for Inter Miami right now when it comes to the injured Lionel Messi: The team keeps saying he might play, and then he doesn’t play.

That pattern held true again Saturday, when the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was scratched from the lineup for a matchup against New York City FC — a game with significant Major League Soccer playoff implications for both clubs. Messi has a leg injury, the severity of which has not been revealed by Inter Miami.

The team announced that Messi would not play about 45 minutes before Saturday’s game time.

The 36-year-old superstar has now missed four of Inter Miami‘s last five matches, plus another for Argentina in that span because of what was first called fatigue — by both his club and country — and has evolved from there.

The only game he didn’t miss during that stretch was a 37-minute appearance against Toronto on Sept. 20, and he had to leave that match before halftime because of what is believed to be a hamstring issue.

Saturday’s absence came with Inter Miami entering the night five points behind NYCFC with two matches in hand. Inter Miami entered the night in control of its playoff destiny, trying to make a push for one of the nine playoff spots out of the Eastern Conference.

After Saturday, the team will have only four MLS matches remaining. And Messi’s status for them remains a mystery, even as some fans pay hundreds of dollars — or more — to attend a match with hopes of seeing him play.

Many fans on social media have responded to posts from the team with outrage over the lack of transparency about Messi’s status.

A post previewing the NYCFC match, sent around midday Saturday, elicited comments like “Post the squad and don’t fool your own fans. Have some shame.” and “Can y’all be clear about what’s going on with Messi” Messi’s status is not the only talking point around the team in recent days. Inter Miami sent out season-ticket renewal notices this week, with big price increases in every section for next season.

Season prices in the section where Inter Miami’s most ardent supporters stand, chant and wave banners for the entirety of matches are set to rise 82% (from $485 to $884) in 2024, prices for some seats near midfield will be 98% higher (from $1,333 to $2,635) in some sections than the published price of what they were this year, and other fans were told to expect a more than 100% increase over what they have been paying. The published price for the most expensive season tickets next season tops $40,000, and that isn’t even for the suites.

It surely was expected that prices would rise; Messi’s 2 1/2-year contract will pay him an average of more than $50 million annually, and that doesn’t even take into account what Inter Miami spent to land its other two major midseason acquisitions this year — Jordi Alba (who is also sidelined by injury) and Sergio Busquets.

But it’s also clear that the team is already enjoying revenue streams like never before. MLS revealed Friday that Messi’s jersey — in absolutely no surprise — is the top-seller in the league this season. MLS, without releasing sale numbers, divulged the 25 most popular jerseys sold at mlsstore.com and Messi’s is No. 1, with Busquets at No. 13 and Inter Miami’s Josef Martinez at No. 21.

That data represents all sales on the site since Jan. 1, and Messi and Busquets weren’t even with Inter Miami until July. It also does not include anything that the team has sold on its own.

Messi has 11 goals in 12 matches with Inter Miami this season. The team is 8-0-4 when he plays; seven of those matches were on the team’s run to win its first-ever trophy by claiming the Leagues Cup championship — the irony of that run being that it prompted concerns over how much Messi was being asked to play in a relatively short span after joining his new club. He has appeared in four MLS matches and one U.S. Open Cup semifinal.

The team entered Saturday 1-2-1 in its four matches without Messi since signing the legend. Since his signing, entering Saturday, Inter Miami has outscored opponents 29-12 when Messi is on the field, 12-10 when he is not.

R Ashwin Calls Ex-India Star Who Criticised His Action. He Said…

One of India’s finest players of this generation, Ravichandran Ashwin earned a recall to India’s ODI team ahead of the World Cup. While there were those who doubted whether the veteran could still deliver in teh 50-over format of the game, he did incredibly well against Australia, prompting the selectors to inlcude him in the ODI World Cup roster too after Axar Patel was injured. However, ahead of the start of the showpiece event, former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan expressed a worry over Ashwin’s action. While Siva was trolled by many on social media for his views, Ashwin himself called up the former India star and sought advice.

Having been a star spinner during his playing days, Sivaramakrishnan highlighted how Ashwin’s action lacks ‘synchronisation’. He even shared a picture to justify his point.

“This picture has gone viral on SM. Enlarge the image and you notice his non bowling arm and upper body has opened up towards the offside. If you look at his lower body is closed. This leads to lack of synchronisation. Ash quickly needs to correct this to be more effective,” Sivaramakrishnan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

While there were many who hit out at Siva for his critical opinion, the former India star took to social media to reveal that Ashwin himself gave him a call to talk about the ‘techincal flaw’. Not just that, Ashwin also clarified that those who were trolling Siva had nothing to do with him.

“Ravi Ashwin was nice enough to call me just a while ago to discuss his bowling action, he was as shocked with the venom of the trolls as I was. Also clarified that the people involved are in NO WAY connected to him. GOOD LUCK @ashwinravi99. Do us proud,” he posted in the second tweet.

Ashwin would look to iron out flaws that Sivaramakrishnan highlighted as India take on Netherlands in a warm-up game ahead of the World Cup on October 03.
