Turkey targets PKK in N Iraq after Ankara suicide attack

A Turkish interior ministry statement on Sunday said some 20 targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) group were “destroyed” in the aerial operation, including caves, shelters, and depots.

The military ramped up air strikes in Iraq’s PKK bases in Gara, Hakurk, Metina, and Qandil, the statement said, Aljazeera reported.

The strikes came hours after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near an entrance of the interior ministry building in Ankara, injuring two police officers. A second assailant was killed in a shootout with police.

A media outlet close to the PKK said the group claimed responsibility for the suicide attack.

From time to time, the Turkish military carries out air strikes on PKK positions, which is listed as a terrorist group by the EU, US, and Turkey.

The Turkish military is said to have more than a dozen military bases in northern Iraq and many more in Syria under the pretext of fighting PKK terrorism.

Both Iraq and Syria have condemned the presence of the Turkish military on their soil as a violation of their territorial integrity and have called on Ankara to pull out its troops.

Brasilia: Over 100 dolphins have been found dead in the Brazilian Amazon over the past seven days due to historic drought and increasing water temperatures, noting 102 degrees Fahrenheit, reported CNN.

According to the Mamiraua Institute, a research facility funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, these dolphins were found in Lake Tefe.

The institute suggested record-high lake temperature and the historic drought in the Aamazon may have been the cause of the death, noting that such a high number of deaths was unusual.

The world’s largest waterway, Amazon River, is currently in its dry season and several specimens of river fauna are also dealing with record-high temperatures.

The deaths will probably add to the concerns of climate scientists over the effects human activity and extreme droughts are having on the region, CNN reported.

The institute said, “It’s still early to determine the cause of this extreme event but according to our experts, it is certainly connected to the drought period and high temperatures in Lake Tef, in which some points are exceeding 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit).”

However, researchers and scientists are trying to rescue the surviving dolphins by shifting them from lagoons and ponds in the outskirts to the main body of the river where the water is comparatively cooler, according to CNN Brasil.

Adding to this, CNN reported, the operation is not easy due to the remoteness of the area.

Andre Coelho, a researcher at the Mamiraua Institute, told CNN Brasil, “Transferring river dolphins to other rivers is not that safe because it’s important to verify if toxins or viruses are present (before releasing the animals into the wild).”

Moreover, as many as 59 municipalities have reported below average levels of water in Amazonas State, hindering both transport and fishing activities on the river, reported CNN.

Authorities are further expecting even more acute droughts over the next couple of weeks, which could lead to more deaths of dolphins.

Furthermore, the deadly drought in the Amazon is river is further impacting the economy.

New Delhi: As the build-up to the ICC Cricket World Cup in India continues, England captain Jos Buttler has named his dream five One Day International (ODI) playing eleven players.

Buttler picked up active players in his dream five, selecting a rival wicketkeeper/batter and a fellowcaptain as another opening batter in his side, as per ICC.

-Adil Rashid (England)

184 ODI wickets at an average of 32.41, economy 5.67 11 Cricket World Cup wickets at an average 47.81, economy of 5.71 Adil’s was Buttler’s first selection- tipped to enjoy a successful trip to India next month as England attempt to defend their title.

Back in 2019, the leg-spinner got 11 scalps in his debut World Cup on home soil, including figures of 3/54 (10) against Australia, 3/66 (10) when taking on Afghanistan. His economy was under five an over against New Zealand in the final, where the side eventually lifted the trophy.

Rashid will be aiming to enjoy India’s spin-friendly conditions and comes into the tournament boasting strong form, going 10 ODI matches on the trot taking at least one wicket.

In the last 10 ODIs, Rashid has taken 22 wickets at an average of 22.72, at an economy of 5.95, taking a wicket every 23 deliveries. He could pass the 200 wickets milestone during the tournament, with 16 more scalps to go.

-Quinton de Kock

6,178 ODI runs at 44.75, Strike Rate 95.75 450 Cricket World Cup runs at 30.00, Strike Rate 85.55 190 catches, 16 stumpings 18 catches, 1 stumping

The 30-year-old is pulling down the curtains on his ODI career after the Cricket World Cup, but his threat as a match-winner is still widely recognized ahead of Proteas campaign in India.

He strikes close to a run-a-ball in the 50-over format, de Kock’s average of 44.75 is great, considering the new ball challenges at the top of the order and his aggressive, high-risk approach with the bat.

At World Cups, de Kock has not made a huge score. He made three half-centuries at the 2019 tournament, including a knock of 68 (74) against England and 52 (51) against Australia in a winning effort.

-Rohit Sharma

10,031 ODI runs at an average of 48.69, Strike Rate 90.26 978 Cricket World Cup runs at an average of 65.20, Strike Rate 95.97 Having recently 10,000 ODI runs, the Indian skipper’s 2019 Cricket World Cup campaign is fresh in everyone’s memory. Bouncing back from the heartbreak of missing India’s 2011 squad, Rohit showed glimpses of his class with 137 (126) against Bangladesh and also two half-centuries at the 2015 tournament.

The 2019 campaign for Rohit exceeded everyone’s expectations, blasting five centuries, including three tons in successive knocks against England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He scored 648 runs in the tournament with five tons and a fifty, ending up as leading run-scorer in the tournament.

Rohit will most likely pass 1,000 runs in Cricket World Cup matches, with his average of 65.20 only bettered by one player to cross four four figures – South Africa’s AB de Villiers.

-Glenn Maxwell

3,490 ODI runs at an average of 33.88, Strike Rate 124.82 501 runs at an average of 38.53, Strike Rate 169.25 60 ODI wickets at an average of 50.23, economy 5.56 6 wickets at an average of 85.50, Economy 5.89 Highly regarded as a match-winner both with ball and bat, Maxwell was acknowledged by his English rival, and will be key for Australia in Indian conditions.

At Cricket World Cup 2019, Maxwell was not blessed with a lot of opportunities with the bat, mostly taking to the crease in death-over situations, but in 2015 campaign, Maxwell stepped up. He made a swashbuckling 102 (53) against Sri Lanka in Sydney, as well as quick-fire half-centuries against Afghanistan and England on the road to lifting the trophy.

Churning runs out through the middle and death overs with the bat, Maxwell will also be useful with his off-spin and could be taking a greater responsibility on slower pitches.

-Anrich Nortje

36 ODI wickets at an average of 27.27, economy 5.85 Yet to play at a Cricket World Cup
Battling Anrich Nortje is a headache, and Buttler knows first hand, dismissed by the Proteas quick in their first meeting in the ODI format back in January.

Nortje’s plan of hitting back of the length brought Buttler undone in Bloemfontein, who edged to Quinton de Kock. Buttler has scored only 19 runs off 15 balls against Nortje in the format aside from the dismissal.

Ruled out with a hand injury for the 2019 tournament, the 2023 competition was supposed to be his first WC, but he was ruled out of the squad due to an injury again

The injured cop, K P Sharma, has been hospitalised, the official said.

The incident took place on Sunday at Karaira police station where the accused had come to record their statements in connection with a suicide abetment case, inspector Suresh Sharma told reporters.

According to the injured cop, a youth hanged himself in Toriya Khurd village of the district four days ago and the police registered a case against five people for abetment.

People from the youth’s side were called to the police station on Sunday to record their statements, he said.

However, a young man who had come to record his statement started making a video of the goings-on on his mobile. “When he was told to refrain from recording the video, about nine people thrashed me inside the police station,” said the injured cop.

Atletico earns 3rd straight win in Spanish league after it rallies from 2-goal deficit to beat Cadiz

Madrid: Atletico Madrid rallied from a two-goal deficit to win its third straight game and move into the Champions League spots in the Spanish league.

With a brace from Ángel Correa and a goal by Nahuel Molina, Atletico went from 2-1 down at halftime to beating Cadiz 3-2 on Sunday at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The victory moved Diego Simeone’s team to fourth place behind Girona, Barcelona and leader Real Madrid. Atletico has a game in hand and was coming off wins at Osasuna and against Madrid in the first city derby of the season.

“The team had the tranquility to find the way to victory,” Simeone said. “The guys have been showing great effort, and today’s comeback makes me happy because it wasn’t easy after conceding those two goals.”

Cadiz, winless in three matches and sitting in 12th place, got off to a fast start with Lucas Pires scoring in the 12th and Roger Martí in the 27th. Atletico pulled closer with Correa’s goal in the 32nd, and Nahuel Molina equalized for the hosts early in the second half before Correa got the winner from inside the area in the 66th.

Atletico has won 12 straight home matches at home in the league going back to last season, and it has not lost in 16 consecutive home matches against Cadiz, with 15 wins and a draw.

Cadiz remains winless in its last nine away league matches, since a 2-0 win at Real Betis in April.

HAT TRICK IN 5 MINUTES

Last-place Almeria couldn’t hold on to a three-goal lead at halftime after a hat trick by Luis Suárez in five minutes, drawing 3-3 with second-to-last Granada at home.

Suárez scored Almeria’s goals in the 41st, 44th and in the first minute of first-half stoppage time but the Colombian forward had to leave the game late in the second half with a leg fracture. He was taken to a hospital in an ambulance after being substituted.

Granada rallied with goals from Bryan Zaragoza in the 66th, Ricard Sánchez in the 70th and Myrto Uzuni in the 86th.

Almeria, which was led by interim coach Alberto Lasarte after Vicente Moreno was fired this week, remains the only team without a win in the league this season. It has three points from three draws. Granada has five points from a win and two draws.

BETIS BEATS VALENCIA

Real Betis ended its four-game winless streak in all competitions with a 3-0 win over Valencia.
Assane Diao scored in the first half, and Marc Roca and Ez Abde added second-half goals for the hosts.
The win moved Betis to seventh place, with midtable Valencia winless in three matches.

The game at Benito Villamarin Stadium was moved to a night slot because of high temperatures in the southern Spanish city of Seville.

OSASUNA WINS

Osasuna ended a five-game winless streak in all competitions with a 2-0 victory at promoted Alaves, with José Arnaiz and Ante Budimir scoring a goal in each half.

Osasuna’s last win had come at Valencia in August. It next visits league leader Real Madrid.
Alaves, winless in four matches, played a man down from the 49th because of a red card for midfielder Antonio Blanco.

Brazil President Lula back at official residence to recover from hip replacement surgery

Brazil President Lula back at official residence to recover from hip replacement surgery

Rio De Janeiro: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, two days after undergoing successful hip replacement surgery that will have him working from home while he recovers.

Lula, 77, underwent the operation on Friday. Doctors also performed minor eyelid surgery.

He has returned to the official presidential residence in the capital, Brasilia, and will work there during the coming weeks, Lula said in a statement on X. He previously said that he had suffered hip pains since August of last year.

“Thank you for all the prayers and the caring messages. I’m recovering to work even more for Brazil,” Lula wrote on X, adding — as a joke, presumably — that he intends to run a marathon.

A medical bulletin from Lula’s doctors earlier Sunday said that he had ascended and descended stairs with assistance.

Recovery from hip replacement surgery varies from patient to patient, but most can resume light, day-to-day activities within three to six weeks, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Many patients initially use a cane, crutches, or a walker until balance and strength improve to avoid falls that could jeopardize the surgery’s success, the orthopaedic organisation said.

North Korea denounces IAEA as 'paid trumpeter' for Washington

This file photo shows what North Korean state media reported as the country’s launching ceremony for a new tactical nuclear attack submarine, in North Korea, on September 8, 2023. (KCNA via Reuters)

North Korea has vehemently denounced the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog for “cooking up” a resolution against Pyongyang’s nuclear program, saying it will never tolerate any acts of infringement upon its sovereignty.

The strongly-worded rebuke came after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution on Friday, urging North Korea to suspend its nuclear weapons program and heed the UN Security Council’s resolutions.

Reacting to the measure early Monday, a spokesman for Pyongyang’s Ministry of Nuclear Power Industry vowed, “As long as tyrannical nuclear weapons of the US and imperialist aggression forces exist on this land, the DPRK’s position as a nuclear-weapon state will remain unchanged and the DPRK will never tolerate the hostile forces’ acts of infringing upon its sovereignty.”

The unnamed spokesman was using the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Noting that the IAEA has no jurisdiction in North Korea because it left the organization in 1994, the spokesman described the resolution as a “result of

conspiracy” by the United States and its allies. He emphasized that North Korea’s status as a nuclear-weapon state has already become “irreversible.”

The spokesman also accused IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi of “taking the lead in creating the atmosphere of pressurizing the DPRK” by “spreading a false story” about an imminent nuclear test.

“If the IAEA wants to avoid international criticism as a paid trumpeter of the US, it would be well advised to devote itself to tackling the difficulties facing the international community,” the spokesman said, referring to US nuclear proliferation and Japan’s discharge of wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant.

“Such farce of the hostile forces is a revelation of their sinister intention to cover up their criminal acts of seriously threatening the international nuclear nonproliferation system and justify their hostile policy toward the DPRK,” he added.
