Donald Trump and his family business are set to face trial in New York on Monday to determine how much they owe in penalties after a judge found they inflated the former U.S. president’s assets by billions of dollars to secure more favorable loan and insurance terms.

Here is a look at the case brought by Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James against the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

What Is Donald Trump Accused Of Doing?

Donald Trump, his businesses, and his two adult sons are accused of inflating assets by as much as $1.9 billion to $3.6 billion per year between 2011 and 2021 to save hundreds of millions of dollars on loans and insurance.

James’ office says Mr Trump and his associates used incorrect figures for the sizes of his properties and false or highly unrealistic assumptions about their development potential to arrive at the inflated values.

The judge in the case, Justice Arthur Engoron, ruled on Sept. 26 that James had proven Mr Trump and his co-defendants fraudulently inflated his assets. That means the trial will largely concern how much they must pay in penalties.

Donald Trump does not face any criminal penalties in the civil case but could suffer substantial financial and business consequences.

James is seeking at least $250 million in penalties, a ban against Mr Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York, and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Mr Trump and the Trump Organization.

What Will Happen To Donald Trump’s Business Empire?

Engoron in his ruling ordered the cancellation of certificates that 10 of Donald Trump’s business entities need to operate some of his marquee properties — including Trump Tower and his golf clubs in New York — and said he would appoint independent receivers to oversee their “dissolution.”

The full implications of that ruling on Mr Trump’s opaque network of business holdings is not yet clear, but the trial could provide clarity over whether the assets at the center of the dispute will be liquidated.

What Has Donald Trump Said About The Case?

Donald Trump’s lawyers have disputed James’ figures, saying they are based on flawed accounting methods that fail to consider Mr Trump’s “investment genius” in arriving at his own asset valuations.

Mr Trump himself was dismissive of the allegations during a meandering deposition in April where he touted his achievements as president and distanced himself from day-to-day decision-making at his flagship Trump Organization.

In a post on his Truth Social platform the day of the ruling, Mr Trump called accusations that he committed fraud “ridiculous and untrue,” and blasted Engoron as a “DERANGED” judge.

7 killed in Mexico church collapse

The collapse, which trapped between 30-40, happened at the Iglesia Santa Cruz Church, a Catholic church in Madero, Tamaulipas, Mexico, ABC News reported citing Mexican officials.

A baptism was being celebrated at the time with approximately 100 in attendance.

Following the tragic accident, the Tamaulipas Government released a statement confirming the church collapse and the total of fatalities.

“Today at 2:18 pm, there was a collapse of the roof of the church of the Holy Cross in Cd. Madero, presumably due to a failure in its structure, security and civil protection corporations arrived at the scene, in addition to the municipal authorities that since that moment are taking care of the situation,” the statement read.

“Following this accident, unfortunately, the death of 7 people is confirmed, in addition, 10 people have been rescued who are injured and have been transferred to hospitals, 3 to the Civil Hospital and the remaining 7 to the General Hospital Dr. Carlos Canseco. Debris removal continues for rescue efforts,” the statement continued.

Hangzhou: The Indian campaign in kurash ended without any medal at the Asian Games with Jyoti Tokas and Yash Kumar Chauhan enduring one-sided losses in their respective quarterfinals here on Monday.

Chauhan’s men’s 90kg bout against Sadegh Azarang failed to last the distance as the Iranian inflicted a ‘khalol’ — comprehensive victory with 10 points — to secure a 10-0 win.

The bout is stopped midway if there’s a ‘khalol’ by one of the opponents. The arbitrator announces the “appraisal in case if the throw on back is done by a beautiful and accurate motion”.

Earlier in the women’s 87kg quarterfinal, Jyoti was no match for her Iranian opponent Melika Omid Vandchaly, who won 3-0 securing three ‘chala’.

Chala is a minor throw down on the opponent that garners one point.

A dominant Melika started off with a chala on Jyoti with a subtle attack on the Indian’s legs.

There was no stopping the Iranian who secured two more chalas to race to 3-0 lead with the four-minute clock ticking away.

With less than 15 seconds left, Jyoti tried her best to overcome the deficit, but she failed to pin down Melika in any of her attempts.

India’s Pincky Balhara, a silver medallist at Jakarta in 2018, was knocked out in the women’s 52kg quarterfinals on Saturday.

India’s Aditya Dhopaokar (men’s 81kg), Suchika Tariyal (women’s 52kg) and Keshav (men’s 66kg) were also eliminated in their respective matches.

Kurash returned to the Asian Games for a second time. Kurash made its Asian Games debut during Jakarta-Palembang in 2018.

India have won two medals in kurash at the 2018 Asian Games, with Pincky bagging silver in the women’s 52kg category and Malaprabha Jadhav picking bronze in the same category.

Canberra: The Australian government on Monday announced a crackdown on international student visa scams.

Education Minister Jason Clare, Skills Minister Brendan O’Connor and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil flagged immediate action to boost the integrity of Australia’s lucrative international education industry, reports Xinhua news agency.

Following a government-commissioned rapid review into the exploitation of Australia’s visa system, the government will strengthen regulations to prevent the widespread rorting of the system, they said in a joint statement on Monday.

“The party is over, the rorts and loopholes that have plagued this system will be shut down,” O’Neil said.

Under the crackdown, private colleges will be banned from paying commissions to education agents for poaching international students from rival institutions to prevent agents from luring students away from high-quality universities to low-fee courses.

The government will also start monitoring international student attendance in a bid to stop migrants from using student visas purely for the purpose of working in Australia.

According to daily newspaper the Australian Financial Review, the number of student visa holders in Australia hit an all-time high of 660,765 at the end of June, an increase of 203,000 from the start of 2023.

Data published by the Department of Education in September revealed international education was worth A$26.6 billion ($17 billion) to Australia’s economy in the calendar year 2022, making it the country’s fourth-biggest export behind coal, iron ore and natural gas.

Nightclub fire kills at least 13 in Spain's Murcia

At least 13 people have been killed in a fire in a nightclub in Murcia in southeast Spain, Murcia’s Mayor Jose Ballesta said in a press conference on Sunday (October 1).

Rescuers were still searching for people unaccounted for after the blaze, according to emergency services.

Earlier, Diego Seral, of Spain’s National Police, told reporters the dead were found in the Fonda Milagros nightclub, one of three adjoining clubs, which had sustained the majority of fire damage, including the collapse of its roof, he added.

Police investigators were unable to access the site due to the high temperatures and danger of collapse.

Mayor Ballesta declared three days of mourning for those who had died. Flags were lowered to half mast outside Murcia’s City Hall.

25 injured in police headquarters fire in NE Egypt

At least 25 people were injured in a preliminary count of casualties, Reuters reported citing the Egyptian Ambulance Authority.

Civil defense sources said parts of the building had collapsed in the fire.

Videos posted on social media showed the city’s security directorate engulfed in flames.

The Malaysia duo enjoyed a 2-0 lead with three 10s including one X in the first set.

But the experienced Indian duo bounced back with two 10s and went on to level as the Malaysians crumbled under pressure.

The top-seeded Indian women’s compound team of Jyothi, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur, who got a bye into the quarters, will open its campaign against ninth-seeded Hong Kong who ousted Bangladesh 225-218.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Delhi’s Rajghat on his birth anniversary.

Mahatma Gandhi’s impact is global, said PM Modi in a post on X, today while also urging to work towards fulfilling Gandhi’s dreams.

“I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on the special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. His timeless teachings continue to illuminate our path. Mahatma Gandhi’s impact is global, motivating the entire humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion. May we always work towards fulfilling his dreams. Hangzhou: Indian canoeist Niraj Verma finished seventh in the final of the men’s canoe 1000 m singles competition at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou on Monday.

Niraj clocked timings of 4:36.314 minutes to finish at the seventh spot. Chinese Taipei’s Kuan-Chieh Lai captured the gold (4:15.942 minutes) while Vladlen Denisov of Uzbekistan (4:15.994 minutes) and Timofey Yemelyanov (4:18.810 minutes) of Kazakhstan got silver and bronze respectively.

In the semifinal of the men’s 1000 m singles canoeing event, Niraj clocked 4:31.626 minutes to qualify for the final.

Coming to the women’s canoe 500 m double competition, india clocked the timings of 2:17.614 minutes to finish in ninth and last position. The gold medal went to China (2:01.409 minutes), Kazakhstan (2:08.125 minutes) and Thailand (2:08.257 minutes). The women’s doubles team had Megha Pradeep and Shivani Verma.

In the semifinal of the women’s canoe 500 m doubles event, Megha and Shivani clocked 1:57.225 minutes to reach the final. In the women’s kayak doubles 500 m finals as well, India finished at the bottom with 2:07.440 minutes timings. The gold medal was won by China (1:49.944 minutes), Kazakhstan (1:51.251 minutes) and Uzbekistan (1:52.832 minutes). The doubles kayak team consisted of Binita Chanu and Geetha Parvathy.

In the women’s 500 m kayak double event semifinal, Binita and Geetha clocked 2:07.036 minutes to finish second and among the top three teams that reached the final.

Earlier, the Indian canoeist Soniya Devi Phairembam secured her berth in the final of women’s Kayak single 500 m at the ongoing Asian Games on Sunday.

With the timing of 2 minutes and 16.435 seconds, she finished in second spot in the semifinals below Madinakhon Ashrafxonova of Uzbekistan (2:11.352) to be among the top three players to reach the final. The final will be held on Wednesday.

Canoeing events will be held at the Asian Games from September 30 to October 7. Sprint events will take place from September 30 to October 3 while slalom races will take place from October 5 to October 7.
