Iran backs Oman's initiative on JCPOA revival: spox.

Iran has repeatedly announced that it adheres to the negotiation process for the return of all parties to the deal and considers the negotiation process to be the right approach, the senior Iranian diplomat said in his weekly press conference on Monday morning.

“The initiatives proposed by some friendly countries, including the plan of the Sultan of Oman, are not a new agreement and plan, but initiatives to bring the views closer together for the return of all parties to JCPOA and implement their obligations within in the same framework, he added.

Multilateral diplomatic efforts to revive the JCPOA have been stalled since August 2022, with Iran blaming the United States for refusing to remove the sanctions that the nuclear deal had lifted and also failing to guarantee that it will not leave the deal again.

On Iran’s stance on Karabakh developments

Elsewhere in his remarks, Kan’ani referred to the visit of the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan to Iran.

Grigoryan held a meeting with his Iranian top security official and presented a report on the latest developments in the relations between Baku and Yerevan, he said, adding that the Armenian official is also scheduled to hold a meeting with the Iranian foreign minister on Monday.

Saying that the developments in the Caucasus region are important for Iran, the senior Iranian diplomat added, “Iran’s position regarding the borders of the region is quite clear. We have expressed our views many times. We believe in the necessity of responsible efforts of all parties to resolve disputes within the framework of negotiations and political and peaceful methods.”

Iran welcomes the resolution of disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan through political solutions, he continued, stressing that the country opposes any geopolitical change in the region and is also against extra-regional interventions.

Bihar Caste Survey: 27% Backward Classes, 36% Extremely Backward Classes

Bihar Caste Survey: 27% Backward Classes, 36% Extremely Backward Classes

New Delhi:

The Bihar government on Monday released of data from a state-wide caste-based survey, which indicated that 36 per cent of the state’s population are from Extremely Backward Classes, 27.1 per cent are from Backward Classes, 19.7 per cent are from Scheduled Castes and 1.7 per cent are from Scheduled Tribes. The general population accounts for the remaining 15.5 per cent.

The release of this data comes as the Supreme Court continues to hear petitions challenging a Patna High Court’s judgment that paved the way for this controversial “caste-based headcount”.

Earlier today Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he plans to call all nine parties that are part of the ruling coalition, including Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, to discuss next steps, which could include dealing with calls to increase OBC quotas now at 27 per cent.

In August, after the exercise was completed, Mr Kumar said the survey would be “beneficial for all” and “will enable the development of various sections of society, including the deprived.” The Chief Minister also said the survey – a topic that has divided the country’s political landscape – would identify areas that need development and said, “I am sure other states will also follow it.”

Also in August, when pressed on some political parties opposing the caste-based headcount, the Chief Minister said the exercise had been ordered with the support of all state parties.

This cross-party support, he indicated, included ally-turned-rival BJP.

The contentious nature of this exercise can be gauged from the fact the BJP’s state leaders endorsed the move despite the party opposing calls for a nation-wide caste-based census.

Behind Delhi Cop's Arrest For Woman's Murder, A Sister's Fight For Justice

Cop Misled Murdered Woman's Family For 2 Years. Her Sister Never Gave Up

Mona Yadav went missing in 2021. Surendra Rana was arrested for her murder yesterday

New Delhi:

A Delhi Police head constable was arrested yesterday for the murder of his former colleague, two years after he allegedly choked her to death and threw her body in a canal. Behind the arrest of Surendra Rana (42) was a long wait and relentless pursuit of justice by the victim Mona Yadav’s family.

Recounting the harrowing journey to find the truth about her missing sister and the struggle to get her justice, Mona’s elder sister broke down several times in the office of a senior police officer. As she spoke of a family’s dreams for its daughter and how they turned to ashes, those present in the office, including some journalists, were left speechless. She fainted several times as she spoke.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said they were from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. “We were three sisters. Mona was the youngest. Our father worked as a sub-inspector with UP police. In 2011, he died of a bullet injury,” she said.

Mona, she said, was an ace student. “Our father wanted Mona to become an IAS officer. After his death, she resolved to make his dream come true,” her sister said.

Mona, she said, got a job with Delhi Police in 2014. It was during her posting at the control room that she met Rana. The head constable, who was married, allegedly murdered 27-year-old Mona in 2021 after she turned down his proposal. Two of his brothers-in-law have been arrested for allegedly helping him in a cover-up.

“Rana would often come home, we never suspected any wrong intention. Mona then got a job in Uttar Pradesh police. In 2020, she started living in Mukherjee Nagar and preparing for UPSC, the civil services entrance exam,” she said. “Surendra used to call her ‘beta’ and took care of her. We never suspected anything. Then Mona went missing in 2021. We asked Surendra, but he said he had no clue about her whereabouts.”

In October 2021, Mona’s sister registered a missing complaint at Mukherjee Nagar police station. Surendra accompanied her.

The head constable put in motion an intricate plan to cover up his crime by convincing Mona’s family that she was alive, but did not want her family to contact her. He got his brother-in-law Rabin to call up Mona’s family members. Rabin introduced himself as “Arvind” and said he and Mona had married, but were hiding because his family was opposed to their marriage.

“We were suspicious. Why wasn’t Mona speaking to us? She was an educated woman and we had never stopped her from doing anything,” her sister said.

Surendra, she said, would send Mona’s family audio recordings in which he was heard asking her to return home. The cop had some audio clips in Mona’s voice. He would edit them to add his voice and simulate a conversation.

“I travelled across five states to look for my sister. Every time her ATM card was used, I would go to that state. When I saw CCTV footage from the ATM kiosks, I would see a man wearing a helmet. Surendra would share information about hotels or dhabas and I would rush to them, hoping to find Mona,” said her sister, who works as a school teacher.

“I could not get leave daily to look for my sister. There were days when I would finish work, go to police stations for information about Mona. Some days, it would get so late that I could not even go home. I returned to school in the same clothes as the fay before. On one occasion, I got information that Mona was in Karnataka. I took leave and travelled there. Now I know the call was made by Surendra’s wife Rabin,” she said.

To draw Mona’s family deeper into his web of lies, Surendra got a woman vaccinated and got a Covid jab certificate in Mona’s name. “We had started suspecting Surendra, but we had no proof. When we spoke to the cops at Mukherjee Nagar police station, they said, ‘your sister has eloped’. Our family was shattered, but I did not lose hope,” she said, fighting back tears.

Eight months after she registered the missing complaint, a case was filed, but there was no breakthrough whatsoever. Two months back, Mona’s sister met Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and shared her heart-rending account. The case was transferred to the crime branch, which cracked it within two months.

Her sister is now waiting for strict punishment for the accused. She has requested senior police officers to recover Mona’s remains so that the family can perform her last rites.

Hyderabad witnesses significant drop in gold rates

Hyderabad: The price of gold in Hyderabad took a significant dip on Monday, settling at a six-month low. The 24-carat gold per 10 grams found its footing at a modest Rs 58,040, while its 22-carat counterpart settled at an even lower Rs 53,200. This dramatic plunge marks a stark contrast to the exorbitant rates witnessed just a few months ago.

The last time Hyderabad saw such affordable gold prices was back in April. On May 5, gold reached its zenith for the past half-year, with 24-carat gold soaring to Rs 62,400 per 10 grams. However, it appears that the market has decided to take a breather from these sky-high numbers, at least for the time being.

Gopi Krishna Manepally, the Managing Director of Manepally Jewellers, shared his insights on this sudden downturn.

He stated, “This drop in prices was expected, especially when we look at the international level, where the gold rate has come down from $2,000 to $1,840. But, this should only be temporary. For sure, this is going to bounce back to higher figures. My suggestion would be that this is a good time for people to buy gold.”

Diamond prices dip globally with consumers choosing services over jewellery

New York: Prices for rough diamonds — the raw, unpolished, and uncut stones — have dipped in 2023 as many post-pandemic consumers are shying away from luxury goods, the media reported.

According to the Zimnisky Global Rough Diamond Index, prices are the lowest they’ve been in a year. Industry analysts attribute the slump to declining sales at the jewellery counter, CNN reported.

As consumers spent less money on dining and travel during the pandemic, people had excess money to spend on discretionary purchases, noted Paul Zimnisky, a global diamond analyst.

Diamond prices have adjusted to consumers choosing services over jewellery. People are eating out, traveling and spending money on experiences rather than luxury goods, according to analysts.

“Diamonds are a completely consumer-driven market,” CNN quoted Edahn Golan, an independent diamond analyst, as saying.

Shopper demand for diamond jewellery influences rough diamond prices and, to an extent, retail prices.

Retailers stoke consumer demand by pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into advertising.

The plummeting prices follow two record-breaking years in rough diamond sales.

In 2021 and 2022, demand for natural diamond jewellery was at an all-time high, CNN reported.

“There was a parabolic move up, and now there’s a correction on the other side,” Zimnisky noted.

Industry analysts expect to see a jump in retail sales during the winter holidays and into early 2024.

The winter months are peak engagement season, and Christmas and Valentine’s Day are typically lucrative holidays for jewellery companies.

While this might lead to a small spike in rough diamond prices, “overall, we’re going to see a year-over-year decline of sales in the holiday season”, predicts David Johnson, a spokesperson for De Beers, one of the largest diamond companies in the world.

Saudi Arabia expects budget deficit up to 2026

Saudi Arabia is expecting to post a budget deficit up to 2026 despite earlier predictions of a surplus as the world’s biggest crude exporter is undergoing reforms to diversify its economy beyond oil revenues.

In a preliminary budget statement released on Saturday, the Saudi Finance Ministry projected budget deficits of 1.9, 1.6, and 2.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the coming three years.

It said the “limited budget deficits” would continue in the medium term because of expansionary spending policies and conservative revenue estimates.

The ministry also said total revenues this fiscal year, which runs from January to December, were expected to be 1.18 trillion riyals ($314 billion), with expenditure estimated at 1.26 trillion riyals. This is while an earlier projection had put the numbers at 1.130 and 1.114 trillion riyals, respectively.

It further pared its growth forecast for this year from 3.1 to 0.03 percent.

Inflation and supply chain problems have hampered growth, but “the government is working to expand government spending that has a transformative effect, while maintaining fiscal sustainability in the medium and long term,” the statement read.

Last December, Saudi Arabia announced it had recorded its first annual budget surplus in nearly a decade on the back of oil price hikes.

This year, however, the country’s oil revenue has fallen by 17 percent as prices have dipped and Riyadh has cut production “to stabilize the oil market.”

Meanwhile, the kingdom is pursuing its ambitious and very expensive Vision 2030 project meant to shift the economy away from fossil fuels.

In an assessment report last month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected Saudi Arabia to swing to a fiscal deficit of 1.2 percent of GDP in 2023, from a surplus of 2.5 percent in the previous year.
