“ODIs should be World Cups only”: MCC President Mark Nicholas

London: The new president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Mark Nicholas wants the ODI format to be played exclusively in the World Cup in a bid to protect the format that is losing its importance and the rise of T20I format over the period of time.

Nicholas succeeded Stephen Fry as the president of cricket’s oldest and most prestigious members’ club talked about reducing the ODI bilateral series and told ESPNcricinfo, “We believe strongly that ODIs should be World Cups only. We think it’s difficult bilaterally now to justify them. They’re not filling grounds in a lot of countries. And there is a power at the moment to T20 cricket that is almost supernatural.”

“It’s more than just ticket sales. It’s the amount of people that want to own franchises, the amount of countries that want to run tournaments, it’s the amount of players that want to be in a market all around the world. In a free market, the most money wins. And that’s just the end-game. The players can see that bubbling away and they want to be a part of it. So, it is an extraordinary power that T20 has, and I think scheduling 50-over cricket alongside it just continues the story of the death knell of the ODI game,” Nicholas added.

He further went on to add the amount of relevance MCC holds in this case and admitted that it is unlikely that they wil sway the International Cricket Council (ICC) decision.

“How much more relevant can MCC be? Is there a danger we’re losing our relevance in global cricket thinking? Can we use our World Cricket Committee better? Can we use our massive list of Honorary Life members, [which has] the outstanding players of the modern era and the era before on it,” Nicholas said.

“The problem at the moment is that the ICC see us a bit of a threat,” he said. “When we put our head above the parapet, they’re like ‘whoa, settle down, we run the game’. So we need to integrate better with ICC, we need to understand each other better. We need to develop thinking that comes together,” Nicholas added.

Meanwhile, the ODI World Cup is set to begin on October 5, with a repeat of the 2019 final clash between England and New Zealand.

Catalans march in Barcelona on 6th anniversary of independence referendum

Thousands of Catalans marched through the streets of Barcelona in a rally to mark the sixth anniversary of the Catalan independence referendum.

Carrying pro-independence flags and banners, the demonstrators chanted anti-Spain slogans as they marched from the former model prison through Plaza Catalunya to the Guardia Civil headquarters in the Gracia neighborhood.

Among the participants was Roger Espanyol, an activist who lost his right eye to a rubber bullet shot by the Spanish police during the repression of the pro-referendum demonstrations.

Although the demonstration started off peacefully, with protesters seen with Catalan flags, some attendees started burning barricades and using bins to block roads.

The independence referendum was originally held on October 1 2017. The movement was deemed illegal by the Spanish government in Madrid, which ordered the arrest and exile of the main organizers of the province’s independence attempt.

Indian Railways comes up with 14-minute Miracle cleaning challenge for Vande Bharat Express

Hyderabad: Inspired by Japan’s “7-minute miracle” of cleaning its globally renowned bullet trains, the Indian Railways has come up with a “14-minute miracle” challenge on all the Vande Bharat Express trains.

As part of it, the Secunderabad division of South Central Railway (SCR) undertook the ‘14 minutes miracle’ challenge on Train No. 20834 Visakhapatnam – Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express at the Secunderabad railway station on Monday.

SCR General Manager Arun Kumar Jain monitored the challenge and the mechanical and cleaning staff successfully accomplished the task of cleaning the entire Vande Bharat rake i.e., 16 coaches, in just a span of 14 minutes.

Arun Kumar Jain informed the 14 minutes miracle scheme has been launched by the Indian Railway to provide top class, clean and comfortable train experience to the esteemed rail passengers. “The 14 minutes cleaning challenge reduces the waiting time at station and provides more time for the passengers to board the train,” he said adding that the exercise is not a one-time exercise and will be carried out regularly from here on in all Vande Bharat trains.

Bullet trains in Japan have a quick turnaround time and the railway staff pull off the cleaning process of a bullet train in a mere 7-minute with a method called Shinkansen.

India’s Parul Chaudhary and Priti secured silver and bronze medals respectively in the women’s 3000m steeplechase but they were left chasing the shadow of Bahrain’s Yavi Winfred Mutile, who set an Asian Games record on way to defending her title on Monday. Parul clocked 9:27.63 seconds, which was more than nine seconds behind the Bahrain runner who took the top podium finish in 9:18.28, a new Games record. The previous Games record stood in the name of country-mate Jebet Ruth (9:31.36 sec) set during the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Though Parul also breached the Asian Games record, it was nowhere close to her national record and personal best of 9:15.31 clocked at the World Championships in Budapest, which helped her qualify for the Paris Olympics, in August.

Compatriot Priti finished a good 16 seconds behind Parul, clocking a personal best 9:43.32 seconds to win the bronze in a close finish with another Bahrain runner Mekonen Tigest Getent, who timed 9:43.71 seconds to finish fourth.

Yavi began to pull away in the sixth lap of the gruelling race, making Parul look like an underpowered engine.

The Kenyan-born Bahrain runner, who won the 2023 World Athletics Championships gold in the event beating country-mate Beatrice Chepkoech, finished at least 50 metres ahead of the 28-year-old Parul.

In men’s 200m, India’s Amlan Borgohain finished a distant sixth in 20.98 seconds.

The gold was won by Japan’s Koki Ueyama in 20.60 seconds, which was way below the Asian Games record of 20.14 seconds set in Incheon by Qatar’s Femi Ogunode.

Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Abdullah Abkar clinched the silver medal with a time of 20.63, while the bronze went to Chinese Taipei’s Yang Chun-Han who clocked 20.74 seconds.

BRS govt wants every homeless poor to live with self-respect: Puvvada

Khammam: The Telangana government wants every homeless poor to live with self-respect and constructing double bedroom houses across the State, said Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar.

The minister said he was very happy to distribute double bedroom houses to the poor and join them in a house warming ceremony. Unlike the previous governments, which handed over some money and materials for house construction; the BRS government is building double bedroom houses and the beneficiaries need not spend a single rupee, he noted.

Ajay Kumar inaugurated a complex of 168 double bedroom houses built at a cost of Rs.9.89 crore at Allipuram, a 33/11 KV electricity substation constructed with Rs 1.50 crore and a Vaikunta Dhamam constructed with Rs.2 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for road works.

Addressing a gathering the minister said the selection of double bedroom beneficiaries was done in a transparent manner. The government has fulfilled poor people’s dream of building a house through the Gruha Lakshmi scheme and 4,000 families benefitted in Khammam constituency with the scheme.

Speaking at an Athmeeya Sammelanam earlier, Ajay Kumar appealed to the public to compare the difference between 2014 and 2023 in terms of development in Khammam. There were 25,534 drinking water taps earlier and now there are 75,318 tap connections. The city had only 217 km of pipeline in the past and a 615 km long pipeline was laid to supply water.

The number of overhead tanks has increased to 27 now while there were only seven in the past. Similarly, Khammam city once had only 14 sanitation vehicles for garbage collection whereas there were 143 vehicles available for the purpose, Ajay Kumar explained.

Previously there were only three public toilets in the city, but now 41 public toilets have been constructed at all major intersections. There was one graveyard in the past and there were four well equipped Vaikunta Dhanams in the city, he said.

For the ongoing development to continue the public have to think wisely and elect the BRS government again. Asserting that he was the son of the soil, born and brought up in Khammam Ajay Kumar urged the voters to support him in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Nobel Prize in medicine went to Covid 19 vaccine researchers

The Nobel Prize committee announced the prestigious honor, seen as the pinnacle of scientific achievement, in Sweden on Monday.

It praised the scientists’ “groundbreaking findings,” which the committee said “fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system.”

Karikó and Weissman published their results in a 2005 paper that received little attention at the time, it said, but later laid the foundation for critically important developments that served humanity during the Covid pandemic, the CNN reported.

Rickard Sandberg, a member of the Nobel Prize in medicine committee, said “mRNA vaccines together with other Covid-19 vaccines have been administered over 13 billion times. Together they have saved millions of lives, prevented severe Covid-19, reduced the overall disease burden and enabled societies to open up again.”

arikó, a Hungarian-American biochemist, and Weissman, an American physician, are both professors at the University of Pennsylvania. Their work became the foundation for Pfizer and its German-based partner BioNTech, as well as Moderna, to use a new approach to produce vaccines that use messenger RNA or mRNA.

Messenger RNA is a single strand of the genetic code that cells can “read” and use to make a protein. In the case of this vaccine, the mRNA instructs cells in the body to make the particular piece of the virus’s spike protein. Then the immune system sees it, recognizes it as foreign and is prepared to attack when actual infection occurs.

he Nobel Prize announcements began in Sweden Monday and will continue throughout this week and into next, with awards in physics, chemistry, literature and economics set to be announced in the coming days. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in Norway on Friday.

Bengaluru:

On-demand delivery platform Dunzo said today one of its four co-founders, Dalvir Suri, would leave and the cash-strapped, Reliance Industries-backed startup. It also announced an organisation-wide restructuring from this quarter.

Dunzo has been struggling to strike a funding deal in the past few months and has announced at least three rounds of layoffs, deferred or reduced salaries for some employees as well as reduced 50 per cent of its dark stores.

Dunzo is in advanced talks to close a $25 million to $30 million funding round that will raise Reliance Retail’s 25.8 per cent stake in the firm, Moneycontrol reported last week.
