Prigozhin's son reportedly takes over command of Wagner

Pavel Prigozhin, 25, is negotiating with Rosgvardia, the Russian National Guard, over Wagner rejoining combat in Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said.

The Wagner Group’s main combat elements are split across several countries, including Belarus, the Central African Republic, Libya, and Mali, and there has been no clear unified leader since the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, The Telegraph reported.

Prigozhin’s death came two months after he staged a brief mutiny, marching his Wagner Private Military Company forces toward Moscow with the stated goal of replacing top military commanders.

The Russian president branded the man a traitor at the time but agreed to a deal in the interest of avoiding major bloodshed. This allowed Prigozhin and his loyalists to leave Russia. He has repeatedly stressed that most Wagner members were patriots, whose service on the battlefield made them heroes.

Some Western media have claimed that Moscow may have been behind Prigozhin’s plane crash. The Kremlin has dismissed this “speculation” as “a total lie.” Putin has promised a thorough investigation of the incident.

BJP plans to exploit Women’s Reservation bill to hide shortage of candidates in Telangana

BJP plans to exploit Women’s Reservation bill to hide shortage of candidates in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party, facing a severe shortage of candidates with winning potential in Telangana, is reportedly planning to exploit the recently passed Women’s Reservation Bill and project it as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gift to women voters. This would hide the truth about the party’s weakness in the State and at the same time, help it gain some votes from women. As part of this strategy, the party is considering giving a large number of seats to women candidates, according to party sources.

Though the party received about 6,003 applications for party tickets to contest from the 119 assembly constituencies, a majority of them turned out to be non-serious candidates. So far, the party has reportedly managed to identify candidates for about 40 constituencies and does not know what to do to field candidates in the rest of the seats. Sources said the party leadership is now planning to allot tickets to women and Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates in constituencies where it is finding it difficult to get winnable candidates.

The BJP leadership is of the opinion that allotting tickets to women and OBC candidates will help the party in getting the support of these categories. Already the State leaders have been directed to make the Women’s Reservation Bill, National Turmeric Board and Central Tribal University announced by Modi part of the party’s election campaign.

“Allocating tickets to a large number of women and OBC will definitely help the party in winning a few seats in the upcoming assembly polls,” a BJP leader said. Citing the example of Nizamabad MP Dharampuri Arvind and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay, who belong to the Munnuru Kapu communities, a backward caste community, the party leaders claim that the victory of these two leaders is an indication that BCs are with the BJP and giving more tickets to them could yield good results.

Ukraine vs Elon Musk In Meme Battle Over Aid, Failed SpaceX Launch

Ukraine vs Elon Musk In Meme Battle Over Aid, Failed SpaceX Launch

Ukraine’s parliament speaker hit out at Elon Musk’s jibe with his own post on X (File)

Kyiv:

Ukraine’s parliament and its speaker taunted billionaire Elon Musk on Monday after he posted a meme on his social media platform mocking President Volodymyr Zelensky’s pleas for wartime assistance from the West.

Elon Musk owns SpaceX, which provides Starlink satellite communication services that are vital for Ukraine’s defence effort, but his statements have sometimes angered Kyiv since the full-scale invasion launched by Russia in February last year.

Early on Monday, Elon Musk posted a meme on his platform X, formerly known as Twitter, showing Zelensky and the caption: “When it’s been 5 minutes and you haven’t asked for a billion dollars in aid.”

The Ukrainian leader and his top lieutenants have appealed to their allies throughout the war to secure billions of dollars of military aid to weather and push back Russia’s invasion.

The speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, hit out at Elon Musk’s jibe with his own post on X.

“The case when …(Elon Musk) tried to conquer space, but something went wrong and in 5 minutes he was up to his eyeballs in shit,” an apparent reference to SpaceX’s failed rocket launch in April.

Ukraine’s parliament, on its official page on X, accused Elon Musk of spreading Russian propaganda, posting its own version of the meme with a picture of Musk and the caption: “When it’s been 5 minutes and you haven’t spread Russian propaganda”.

A Ukrainian presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, who has criticised some of Elon Musk’s statements in the past, said in a post on X that being silent or ironic about Ukraine played into the hands of Russian propaganda.

“Unfortunately, not everyone and not always, while being significant media figures, but being thousands of kilometres away from the war’s epicenter, is able to realize what the daily bombardments and cries of children losing their parents are.”

Ukrainian officials criticised Elon Musk earlier in the war for suggesting that they should consider giving up land for peace, a position that Kyiv has staunchly rejected.

Zelensky visited the United States in September and met top officials in a bid to secure further aid. Over the weekend, aid for Ukraine was omitted from a stopgap funding measure passed by US Congress to avert a US government shutdown.

The US has been the largest single donor to Ukraine since Russia’s full invasion last year, giving tens of billions of dollars in military and financial aid.

Nalgonda: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday said Muslims were treated as second class citizens in BJP-ruled States.

Speaking at a Pragathi Nivedhana Sabha at the NG College grounds here, Rama Rao said no religious clashes or discrimination were reported in Telangana ruled by the BRS.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done nothing but create religious rift in the country. Muslims leaders were facing abusing language in the legislative houses of BJP-ruled States. But in Telangana, the State government was working for the welfare of poor people of all religions, he added.

Stating that 1.5 lakh people were victims of the fluoride menace in the erstwhile Nalgonda district due to failure of the earlier governments, he said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was the real hero for solving the decades-old fluoride menace.

Even though Modi would not acknowledge the achievements of the BRS government, the Centre itself had announced in the Parliament that no new fluoride cases were being reported in Telangana in the last seven years.

The State government had sanctioned development works worth Rs.1,300 crore to Nalgonda assembly constituency in addition to the money spent for welfare schemes. He also assured to sanction another Rs 26 crore for development of roads in the constituency as per the request of Nalgonda MLA Kancherla Bhupal Reddy.

Earlier, he also inaugurated a central lighting system, integrated vegetable and meat market and laid the foundation stone for a Kalabharati auditorium, an R&B guest house and the NG college building.

Turkey to intensify op. in northern Iraq after Ankara bombing

Turkey said it unleashed air strikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq and detained suspects in Istanbul overnight, hours after the group said they orchestrated the first bomb attack in the capital Ankara in years on Sunday, Reuters reported.

Addressing the Parliament hours after the bombing attack, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan implied new “counterterrorism” operations beyond Turkey’s borders were imminent, according to Daily Sabah.

“We can come suddenly one night,” Erdogan said.

On Sunday morning, two attackers detonated a bomb near government buildings in Ankara, killing them both and wounding two police officers.

After Turkey’s airstrikes, Iraqi President Abdul-Latif Rashid said in comments aired on Monday that Iraq rejected repeated Turkish air strikes or the presence of Turkish bases in its Kurdistan region and hoped to come to an agreement with Ankara to solve the problem.

Ankara has received widespread criticism from the Iraqi politicians and political groups for violating Iraqi sovereignty.

Turkey is said to have dozens of military bases in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud at a programme organised on Gandhi Jayanti in London

New Delhi:

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud today said Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas have persisted over time as a tool of social change, non-violent ways of life and humanism. The Chief Justice of India was speaking at a programme organised on Gandhi Jayanti in London.

“In India, he is lovingly referred to as ‘Bapu’ which means ‘father’. In a spiritual sense, he is a guiding light for all of us. His ideas have persisted over time as a tool of social change, non-violent ways of life and humanism,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

“Bapu’s legacy extends far beyond the boundaries of India. His ideas have inspired countless individuals and people’s movements around the world, transcending cultural and geographical barriers. His philosophy continues to influence and guide those who strive for a more equitable and just society,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

The Chief Justice of India said Bapu’s commitment to social justice and equality continues to “inspire us to fight against injustices”.

“His unwavering belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every individual serves as a reminder that we must strive for a society where everyone is treated with fairness and respect. Bapu’s vision of a more equitable and just society encourages us to challenge systems of oppression, advocate for the rights of marginalised communities, and work towards creating a society where everyone has equal opportunities and access to necessities,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

He said Bapu’s lessons on sustainability are a guiding light for today’s world. “As we face the pressing issue of climate change and environmental challenges, his emphasis on living in harmony with nature and practising sustainable lifestyles provides us with valuable guidance,” the Chief Justice of India said.

“Bapu believed in the philosophy of ‘plain living and high thinking’, thus advocating for a lifestyle that is mindful of our impact on the environment. His ideas on sustainability remind us of the importance of contentment and responsible consumption, conservation of resources, and the need to protect the natural world for future generations,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

“As we remember and pay our tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, let us re-dedicate ourselves to upholding his principles and working towards a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world,” he said.

UK nurses tied Sikh patient’s beard with plastic gloves, left him in urine, gave him food he couldn’t eat: Media report

The council has launched an investigation into the newspaper’s revelations.

London: In a shocking incident of “institutional racism” in the UK, nurses reportedly tied a Sikh patient’s beard with plastic gloves, leaving him in his own urine and offering him food he could not eat for religious reasons, according to a media report.

Despite the man complaining about the discrimination in a note on his deathbed, the nurses were allowed to carry on working, The Independent newspaper reported last week, quoting from a dossier leaked to it from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the UK’s nursing regulator, which outlines multiple counts of alleged racism against nursing staff and patients.

The council has launched an investigation into the newspaper’s revelations.

A senior NMC whistleblower claims that the regulator has failed to address “institutional racism” in its ranks for 15 years, warning this has allowed NMC staff “to go unchecked” when “applying guidance inconsistently based on their own discriminatory views”, the report said.

“Nurses accused of tying a Sikh patient’s beard with plastic gloves, leaving him in his own urine and offering him food he couldn’t eat for religious reasons were allowed to carry on working despite the man complaining about discrimination in a note on his deathbed,” it said.

No other details of the man or the hospital were given in the report.

The whistleblower has urged NMC to address an alleged racial bias in how it treats conduct cases against Black and ethnic minority nurses and patients amid claims of “alarming” racism within the organisation, which was first raised in 2008, the report said.
