Hangzhou: Star Indian shuttlers HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu progressed to the men’s and women’s singles pre-quarterfinals with straight-game wins over their respective opponents in the badminton competition at the Asian Games here on Tuesday.

World no. 7 Prannoy, who had missed the men’s team championships final against China due to a back injury, was back on the court, dishing out a clinical performance to expectedly outwit Mongolia’s Batdavaa Munkhbat 21-9 21-12 in 25 minutes.

He will face either Jordan’s Bahaedeen Ahmad Alshannik or Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Panarin.

Former world champion Sindhu also looked good as she prevailed 21-10 21-15 over world no. 21 We Chi Hsu of Chinese Taipei. The last and only time Sindhu played Hsu was at the Asia Badminton Championships in Dubai earlier this month.

Sindhu will play either Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani or Hong Kong’s Liang Ka Wing next.
Sindhu was leading 7-5 in the opening game. She kept her errors low and engaged in rallies, using her tosses and clears. Soon she was 11-6 and 15-6 up.

The Indian moved to 10 game points when her opponent found the net. Sindhu wasted one before sealing it when her rival went long. The second game was a tight affair. Sindhu got her length right early and tried to pin her opponent at the back court, managing to lead 4-2 but the Taipei girl managed to keep close and produced an angled smash to make it 8-7.

An on-the-line return helped Hsu to claw back at 9-9 but Sindhu ensured she has a one-point lead at the interval. The Indian extended the lead to 18-14 before a backhand return took her to five game points and she sealed the contest comfortably.

Journalists Raided, Anti-Terror Case Against NewsClick Amid China Funding Row

The searches were conducted by officers from Special Cell of Delhi Police

New Delhi:

The homes of several journalists associated with NewsClick were searched today in connection with a case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case. According to sources, Delhi Police had registered the case under the anti-terror law on August 17, days after a New York Times investigation alleged that the news portal had received funding from a network pushing Chinese propaganda.

The searches today were conducted by officers from the Special Cell of Delhi Police at around two dozen locations in Delhi-NCR. No arrests have been made so far, but sources said some journalists have been taken to police stations for questioning.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had registered a case against the news portal and investigated its funding. The central agency had also attached some assets linked to the news portal.

The case, sources said, relates to alleged violations in foreign funding and its use. The fresh FIR is based on information shared by the Enforcement Directorate.

The ED has earlier alleged that the news portal received a sum of nearly Rs 38 crore from entities linked to China, and how this amount was used is under the scanner.

People who have received salaries or remunerations from NewsClick are under the scanner. Laptops and phones of journalists whose homes were searched today have been seized for further probe.

Police sources said more information about the searches will be shared later.

In August, a New York Times investigation had alleged that NewsClick is among organisations that were funded by a network linked to US millionaire Neville Roy Singham that pushes Chinese propaganda.

The news portal and its sources of funding came under the scanner back in 2021, when the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police filed a case against it. The Enforcement Directorate case was based on this case. The Delhi High Court gave NewsClick promoters protection from arrest, and the matter is now in court.

The news portal’s offices were also searched by Income Tax officers in 2021 in an alleged tax evasion case.

NewsClick’s editor Prabir Purakayastha had then hit out at the crackdown against the news portal. “These investigations by various agencies, and these selective allegations, are attempts to stifle the independent journalism of media organisations – including NewsClick. The Constitution of India under Article 19(1)(a) guarantees the right to freedom of speech and expression, a right central to our work,” he had said.

Following the New York Times report in August, Mr Purkayastha had told The Indian Express. “These are not new allegations. They have been made in the past. We will respond to them in the appropriate forum, i.e. the court, as the matter is sub judice.”

The Press Club of India has expressed concerns over the raids. “The Press Club Of India is deeply concerned about the multiple raids conducted on the houses of journalists and writers associated with Newsclick. We are monitoring the developments and will be releasing a detailed statement.

“The PCI stand in solidarity with the journalists and demands the government to come out with details. #DefendMediaFreedom,” it added.

Ram Lalla to be taken around Ayodhya in chariot before consecration

Ayodhya: Ram Lalla will embark on a special chariot and take a round of Ayodhya in a massive procession before the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in January 2024.

This is a part of the elaborate plans that the Temple Trust has drawn up for the week-long events. The event will be conducted under the supervision of scholars from Kashi.

Trust member Kameshwar Choupal said: “Before the consecration event, the Saryu will be worshiped, and the new idol of Lord Rama will be anointed with its water. Then the idol will be taken on a city tour in a chariot and after this, the idol of Ram Lalla will be kept with water, fruits and food grains for one day each.”

Choupal said that the consecration ceremony will be celebrated in 4 lakh temples across the country.

“In these temples, special prayers will be held and foods will be distributed. On the main day, when the idol will be installed, amid recitation of the Ramayana and other religious activities, the event will be telecast live for crores of devotees to see this historic moment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the first ‘Ram Stambh’ pillar reached Ayodhya from Rameswaram in a special vehicle decorated with flowers on Monday.

It will be installed at the Mani Parvat temple here, followed by 290 Ram pillars to be installed at major places between the two temple towns that cover the exile path of Lord Ram.

The installation of all ‘Ram Stambh’ pillars will be done by VHP’s Ashok Singhal Foundation.

London: Chelsea’s long wait for another Premier League win came to an end with a 2-0 victory at Fulham.

Two goals in the space of a minute in the first half from Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja on Monday secured the points for Mauricio Pochettino’s struggling team at Craven Cottage and moved it up to 11th in the standings.

It was Chelsea’s first win in the league since August 25 and only its second in the top flight all season.

“It was a decent performance, maybe not as good as we would like, but the most important thing was three points and we desperately needed that,” said Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher.

Mudryk, a USD 108 million signing last season, fired Chelsea in front in the 18th minute after controlling Levi Colwill’s ball and finishing past Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Broja then doubled the lead a minute later, with summer signing from Manchester City, Cole Palmer, seizing on a mistake and providing the assist.

“It’s important for us to build our confidence and trust in ourselves,” Pochettino said.

“I’m so happy for the players and in the end we got what we deserved.” The victory should give Pochettino something to build on after such a troubled start to the season and comes after his side beat Brighton in the English League Cup last week.

It has not been easy for the Argentine who was hired at the end of last season and charged with the responsibility of returning Chelsea to its glory days.

His appointment might have lifted the mood around the club after its worst-ever Premier League season last term, but there has been no instant uplift in form, with Chelsea going into Monday’s game in 15th place.

Its one win in the league had come against newly promoted Luton and its only other victories had been in the League Cup.

That is despite owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital spending big in the transfer market again in the off-season.

But Chelsea looked certain to ensure its first away win of the season after scoring two goals in quick succession in the first half.

After the break, substitute Ian Maatsen was close to adding a third when his side-footed effort came back off the post. Enzo Fernandez tried to convert the rebound, but his shot was blocked by Leno.

Fulham substitute Sasa Lukic had the chance to pull a goal back in the 77th with a shot from around six yards (meters). But he fired straight at Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez.

“It is clear at this level and against these types of teams we cannot make the mistakes we made,” said Fulham manager Marco Silva.

“We were punished for the mistakes we made.”
