128-Year-Old Pennsylvania Mummy 'Stoneman Willie' To Be Laid To Rest

Local residents gave “Willie” a memorable send-off

Around 128 years ago, a petty thief, known to locals as ‘Stoneman Willie’ died of kidney failure in a Pennsylvania jail on November 19, 1895. He was accidentally mummified by a mortician experimenting with a new embalming technique, according to BBC.

Dressed in a suit with a bow tie, the man had been on display at Auman’s Funeral Home in the small city of Reading. His hair and teeth remain intact, and his skin has taken on a leathery appearance.

Before he died he gave authorities a fictitious name upon his arrest, his true identity remains hidden.

According to Reuters, the funeral home had petitioned the state for permission to keep the body instead of burying it to monitor the experimental embalming process.

The funeral home said that they were able to identify the man’s name and will reveal it later this week when they lay the body to rest. There is not much information about him beyond his Irish roots.

“We don’t refer to him as a mummy. We refer to him as our friend Willie,” Kyle Blankenbiller, the funeral director told Reuters. “He has just become such an icon, such a storied part of not only Reading’s past but certainly its present.”

Local residents gave “Willie” a memorable send-off with a colourful parade that included a motorcycle hearse carrying his casket.

Willie will make his final journey on Saturday, October 7 through the streets of Reading. He will be buried at a local cemetery, and at his graveside, the funeral home will reveal his real name.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran welcomes a new chapter in its relations with Muslim countries, highlighting attempts to restore full diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

“We welcome the new page in relations with Islamic countries, but we believe that deals … should proceed based on protecting Palestine’s interests and considering the Zionist regime as illegitimate,” he said during a meeting with participants at the 37th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran on Monday.

Referring to the resumption of ties with Saudi Arabia, Amir-Abdollahian said Iran is pursuing “deep and extensive relations” with an eye to maintaining the interests of the Islamic world while disappointing the enemy and hindering Israel’s normalization efforts.

Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to resume relations following a seven-year hiatus under a China-brokered agreement in March.

The two countries have reopened their respective diplomatic missions and exchanged ambassadors.

The top Iranian diplomat also touched on the recent rapprochement with Egypt and expressed hope for a “good development” that benefits both nations.

He further emphasized that the region and the entire world have entered a new stage, with an increasing understanding of the fact that if we do not think about our security, others will not help.

In the current changing world order, he noted, the US is not able to exercise its hegemonic power after decades of unilateralism.

Another Hospital Tragedy In Maharashtra: 8 Deaths In 24 Hours

Another Hospital Tragedy In Maharashtra: 8 Deaths In 24 Hours

The relatives of the patients have blamed the poor facility for the incident.

Eight people, including two newborns, have died in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district in the last 24 hours. This is the second hospital tragedy to strike Maharashtra as 31 deaths in the last 48 hours at a government facility in Nanded district has been making headlines.

Twelve patients died at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in the last 24 hours, officials said. Out of the 18 deaths, four were brought dead, he added. Two pre-term babies are also amog those dead. “They weighed only 1,300 grams each,” the official said.

Dean of the hospital Sanjay Rathod, however, downplayed the incident, saying “there is no major disparity between the number of deaths and the total number of admissions”.

“Around 200 patients, including serious cases, are admitted to the hospital every day. Given their critical condition, there is no major disparity,” he said.

The relatives of the patients have blamed the poor facility, including shortage of medicines, at the hospital for the incident.

The dean rubbished the claims and said the facility was not running short on life-saving drugs.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Minister of Medical Education Hasan Mushrif today said a thorough investigation will be conducted into Nanded hospital where 31 patients, including 12 newborns, lost their lives.

“We will carry out a thorough investigation. I have briefed Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis regarding the same. I will visit the hospital and a committee of doctors will be formed,” Mr Mushrif said.

Maharashtra has more than 20 government medical colleges and several blame recent transfers of staff for the dilapidated infrastructure at these facilities.

Nearly 350 doctors were transferred between the months of July and August. This when the facilities already have a shortage of about 1,200 doctors.

Recently, resident doctors held a protest as they were not able to get training due to the shortage of senior doctors and professors.

Several health experts have also said that many government hospitals are facing sudden shortage of medicines. The procurement of medicines through Haffkine Biopharmaceutical has been affected for some time.

No alliance with BJP which worships Godse, says KTR

Jagtial: IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao made it clear that the BRS does not have to enter a poll alliance with the BJP, which worships and prays for the first terrorist of the country, Nathuram Godse, who killed the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Terming the BJP a Hindu fundamentalist party, Rama Rao dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tell the public in the Nizamabad meeting whether he would pray to Gandhi or Godse.

BJP was a wicked political party, which prays to Godse, and except flaring up communal tensions and provoking youth to get votes, BJP would not think about the welfare of the public and development. So, there was no need for the BRS to enter an alliance with such a party, he said.

No political party leader in the country has shown the courage to criticize and point out the faults of Modi more than Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the Minister said while addressing a public meeting in Jagtial on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the Congress party, which had appointed a RSS leader, A Revanth Reddy as the TPCC president, was trying to create confusion among the public by spreading wrong propaganda stating that the BRS has an understanding with the BJP.

Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarender Singh had wrote to Sonia Gandhi asking how an RSS leader was appointed as TPCC chief. Can Revanth Reddy say he was not against Muslims, Rama Rao asked.
