Islamabad: Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Monday filed a petition in a special court seeking contempt of court proceedings against the Attock jail superintendent for allegedly denying him permission to speak to his sons over the phone, according to a media report.

Khan, 70, is in judicial custody till September 13 in the cipher case for allegedly disclosing state secrets. He has been incarcerated in the Attock prison since his arrest on August 5 after a trial convicted him in the Toshakhana corruption case.

Last month, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief was granted permission by the special court, formed to hear cases registered under the Official Secrets Act, to speak to his sons – Qasim and Sulaiman.

However, Khan in the petition sought contempt of court proceedings against the Attock jail superintendent for violating the court’s order, Geo News reported.

In the petition, Khan claimed that jail officials denied him permission to have telephonic conversations with his sons on the pretext that he was held under the Secrets Act.

Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain issued notice to Superintendent Attock Jail Arif Shehzad and sought a report on the implementation of the court’s order on September 15.

The purported cipher (secret diplomatic cable) contained an account of a meeting between US State Department officials, including Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu, and Pakistani envoy Asad Majeed Khan last year.

Of late, Khan has come under increased scrutiny following the publication of a purported copy of the secret cable by the US media outlet The Intercept, with many in the previous government led by Shehbaz Sharif pointing fingers at the PTI chief for being the source of the leak.

A division bench comprising Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri on Wednesday suspended Khan’s three-year sentence in Toshakhana corruption and ordered his release from the jail in Punjab province. But he remained in jail after a special court last month extended till September 13 the judicial remand of Imran Khan in the cipher case.

Earlier, Khan, through his lawyers had filed a petition before Judge Zulqarnain seeking permission to talk to his sons Qasim and Sulaiman — living in London with their mother — on the telephone.

The judge had directed the Attock Jail officials to make arrangements for the father to speak to the sons over the phone.

Geo News mentioned how the government of Imran Khan in 2018 did not allow former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to speak to his ailing wife who was then battling cancer in a London hospital. Begum Kulsoom Nawaz passed away in September 2018 in the UK capital.

Automobile retail sales see 9 pc growth in August: FADA

New Delhi: Automobile retail sales in India rose by 9 per cent in August aided by sales growth in all segments, including passenger vehicles and two wheelers, dealers’ body FADA said on Tuesday.

The total retail sales across segments rose to 18,18,647 units last month, up 9 per cent, from 16,74,162 units in August 2022.

Passenger vehicle registrations increased by 7 per cent to 3,15,153 units last month from 2,95,842 units in August 2022.

“In the passenger vehicle segment, improved vehicle supply, bolstered by expanded customer schemes, has maintained positive market dynamics,” the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said in a statement.

Similarly, two-wheeler sales saw a jump of 6 per cent to 12,54,444 units as compared with 11,80,230 units in the same month last year.

“Despite positive growth, consumer sentiment remained ambivalent, impacting conversion rates and intensifying competition among key players,” Singhania noted.

Commercial vehicle registrations increased by 3 per cent to 75,294 units last month from 72,940 units in the same month last year.

Tractor sales jumped 14 per cent to 73,849 units in August as against 65,018 units in the year-ago period.

Three-wheeler retail sales saw a jump of 66 per cent to 99,907 units in August from 60,132 units in August 2022.

“As the Indian automobile industry enters September, the outlook remains cautiously optimistic, shaped by a multitude of factors that vary across vehicle segments,” Singhania said.

The onset of the festive season, beginning with Onam, has uplifted market mood, improved liquidity and eased earlier bottlenecks in the supply chain across all categories, he added.

Lack of sufficient rainfall could precipitate a rise in inflation, adversely affecting consumer purchasing power and diminishing demand, Singhania stated.

This meteorological shortfall would not only jeopardise the yield of the ongoing kharif crops but also cast a shadow on the subsequent sowing season for rabi crops, he added.

“Such developments would be particularly inopportune as they would coincide with the peak of India’s festive season, notably Navratri and Deepawali, traditionally periods of heightened consumer activity,” Singhania said.

FADA said it collated vehicle data for August from 1,352 out of 1,438 RTOs (regional transport offices) across the country.

Kiran George seizes Indonesian Masters Title in consecutive games

Indonesia: The young Indian shuttler, Kiran George won the Indonesia Masters Super 100 men’s singles title on Sunday, defeating Japan’s Koo Takahashi in two straight games, here.

Ranked No. 50, the Indian shuttler defeated Takahashi ranked 82, with a scoreline of 21-19, 22-20. Earlier, Kiran also won the Odisha Open in 2022 for his maiden Super 100 title.

The 23-year-old Indian shuttler has proven to have excellent technique and outstanding fitness throughout the competition. In the semifinals, Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia was upset in a three-setter game by Kiran, who has established himself as a big stage performer on the BWF World Tour.

In the final match of the tournament, both the players showed an exorbitant display of rallies and played at their nerve. In the first game, Kiran, who is quick on the feet, mostly played dribble on the net and a criss-crossing game to take the lead.

In the second game, Takahashi took the initial lead of 2-0, but the Indian was quick to turn the table as he played a crosscourt smash and took the lead of 4-2 before taking the lead to 11-9 at the interval. However, the Japanese held his nerve firmly and managed to level the game at 20-20.

Kiran, yet again with two crosscourt smashes, wrapped up the game early and won the Super 100 Major Title.

Earlier this year, Kiran, who trains at Prakash Padukone Academy in Bengaluru, defeated Chinese star Shi Yuqi and Weng Hong Yang at the Thailand Open.
