Death toll from floods in Greece climbs to 15

Bodies of four more people were found today in the Karditsa area by the search and rescue teams, while another two people, reportedly a couple from Austria, are still missing, Anadolu Agency reported citing the public broadcaster ERT.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Pinios River remains well above the alarm level and hence threatens the city of Larissa, one of the biggest in the region, and adjacent settlements, it added.

It underlined that the floods caused severe destruction in the region and destroyed agricultural production, as well as a large number of houses, businesses, and infrastructure.

The situation is worrying especially in the city of Volos with a 200,000 population where the water supply network was badly damaged, and its residents remain without access to running water.

Australia back at top of ICC ODI rankings following win over South Africa

Dubai: The Australian men’s ODI team, after being briefly dislodged by Pakistan, is back at the top of the ICC rankings following its second successive win over South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Fine centuries by David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne set up a 123-run victory for Australia in the second ODI on Saturday, helping them take a 2-0 lead in five-match series.

Australia smashed 392 for 8, their third highest ODI total, and bowled out South Africa for 269 with 8.1 overs to spare. The visitors had beaten South Africa by three wickets on Thursday and can clinch the series if they win the third ODI at the same venue on Tuesday.

Australia, with 121 rating points following the win, overtook Pakistan by one point. India, with 114 rating points, are third on the ICC rankings.

Australian, after a few hiccups late last year, have been the dominant ODI side. They lost a closely-fought series against Sri Lanka away from home in 2022, which was followed by a humbling defeat to Zimbabwe in a dead rubber after having won the series.

However, Australia followed that with a 3-0 defeat of traditional rivals New Zealand at home and then whitewashed England 3-0 at home in November last year.

They then achieved major success, defeating India in India in March 2023, followed by successive wins against South Africa in the ongoing series.
The equations might change again with Pakistan currently playing in the Asia Cup at home and in Sri Lanka.

Amazon to make initial investment of USD 3 mn in nature-based projects in India

New Delhi: E-commerce major Amazon on Monday said it will make an initial investment of USD 3 million in nature-based projects in India. The allocation is part of the company’s USD 15 million fund it has allocated for nature-based projects in Asia Pacific (APAC).

“The first USD 3 million from the fund’s APAC allocation will support nature-based projects in India.

“For its first project, Amazon will be working with the Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) to support communities and conservation efforts in the Western Ghats, which is home to more than 30 per cent of all of India’s wildlife species, including the world’s largest population of wild Asiatic elephants and tigers,” the company said in a statement.

Amazon will provide USD 1 million to help CWS establish the “Wild Carbon” program, which will support 10,000 farmers in planting and maintaining one million fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal trees, according to the statement.

“The Asia-Pacific region is home to vast forests and rich coastal environments, but it is also highly vulnerable to climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.

“To protect the region from the impacts of climate change and preserve biodiversity, we will need both large-scale and local action – and we are committed to investing in both,” Amazon’s Global VP for Sustainability, Kara Hurst said.

The USD 15 million allocation draws from Amazon’s USD 100 million Right Now Climate Fund, which was created in 2019, to support nature conservation and restoration projects that enhance climate resilience and biodiversity, while driving social and environmental benefits in communities where they operate.

“Amazon’s support enables us to plan and build a program that is self-sustaining in the long-term. The farmers will receive upfront support to select tree types that serve both their livelihoods and the wildlife, whilst also receiving technical assistance, agroforestry training, and support for replanting failed saplings,” CWS Executive Director Krithi Karanth said.

In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge, committing to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.
The Pledge now has more than 400 signatories across 55 industries and 38 countries including nine Indian companies — BluPine Energy, CSM Technologies India, Godi, Greenko, HCL, Infosys, Mahindra Logistics, Tech Mahindra, and UPL.

In 2022, Amazon launched six utility-scale projects in India, and the company claims to be on track to power its global operations with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025 — five years ahead of the initial 2030 target.

The projects include three wind-solar hybrid projects located in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, as well as three solar farms in Rajasthan, representing a total renewable energy capacity of 920 megawatts.

Amazon India has also committed to deploying 10,000 electric vehicles in its delivery fleet by 2025.

Report: US set to approve supply of missiles packed with cluster bombs to Ukraine

The United States is reportedly set to approve arming Ukraine with longer-range missiles that are packed with cluster bombs, despite widespread concerns that they can cause indiscriminate casualties among civilians.

According to a Monday report, citing three unnamed US officials, Washington is “considering shipping either or both Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) that can fly up to 190 miles (306 kilometers), or Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles with a 45-mile (72-kilometer) range packed with cluster bombs.”

Ukraine is currently equipped with 155-mm artillery with a maximum range of 18 miles carrying up to 48 bomblets. The ATACMS can fire around 300 or more bomblets, while the GMLRS rocket system is capable of dispersing up to 404 cluster munitions.

“If approved, either option would be available for rapid shipment to Kiev,” the report said.

The munitions are expected to be used against Russian forces present in those Ukrainian territories, which have voted to join Russia since the onset of the war.

Washington has allocated more than $40 billion worth of military aid to Kiev since last February when the war started.

In September 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree for the formal accession of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia to the Russian Federation, which came following respective referendums in each of those regions.

Kiev, however, views those referendums as “illegal,” and has been pressing its Western allies to outfit it with long-range weaponry, so it can strike deep within those territories.

Cluster munitions generally eject bomblets that can cover five times as much area as conventional bombs.

They are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) because unexploded bomblets can pose a risk to civilians for years after the fighting is over.

The CCM, which took effect in 2010, bans all use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster bombs. More than 100 countries have signed the treaty, but the US, Russia, and Ukraine are yet to join.

Last month, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov lashed out at the US over its support for Ukraine’s use of the globally-banned munitions, noting that the bombs have already killed a Russian journalist.

Antonov slammed Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder for the latter’s earlier remarks claiming that the US has “all indications” that Ukraine is “properly” employing cluster munitions.

“Attempts by US officials to portray Ukraine’s use of controversial cluster munitions as appropriate and legitimate are shameless and outrageous,” Antonov said, adding, “I would like to know whether ‘the proper use’ of cluster bombs is also true for the assassination of Russian journalist Rostislav Zhuravlev.”

Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has demanded the recusal of the federal judge in his 2020 presidential election subversion case.

Trump’s attorneys on Monday argued that US District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s comments, which were made while sentencing two previous January 6 defendants that appeared to reference Trump, indicated she believed that the former US President “should be prosecuted and imprisoned”, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Judge Chutkan has, in connection with other cases, suggested that President Trump should be prosecuted and imprisoned,” the former President’s attorneys said in a court filing. “Such statements, made before this case began and without due process, are inherently disqualifying,” they added.

Trump has been charged by US Special Counsel Jack Smith with four felony counts for allegedly attempting to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges. He has been indicted in four cases – two by Smith, and two by state prosecutors in New York and Georgia, separately.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. On Monday, Trump also sought to dismiss seven of the counts he faces in the Georgia case, arguing that he is immune from prosecution for actions he took in his official capacity as president.

Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Spain’s Davis Cup squad for rest after US Open exit

New Delhi: Following his defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final of the US Open, 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz of Spain has decided to withdraw from the Davis Cup in Valencia next week.

He will be replaced in the team by Albert Ramos Vinolas as Spain aim for a place in this year’s Final-Eight.

“I have to listen to my body after a very long tour. I need to stop and rest, physically and mentally. The calendar is very demanding, there is still a lot of season left, and now I have to recharge my batteries. Good luck to the Spanish team! I will be supporting you strongly! Come on!” Alcaraz said in a post on social media platform X.

Carlos failed to defend his US Open title and will stand over 3000 ATP points behind Novak Djokovic on the ATP ranking list if the Serb lifts the trophy on Sunday.

Over the past year, Alcaraz has faced various physical challenges, including cramps that affected his performance in the Roland-Garros final. He was unable to participate in the Australian Open because of a right leg injury, had to withdraw from Acapulco due to a tear in his right leg, and also pulled out of Monte-Carlo due to issues with his left hand and discomfort in his back.

He finished his season last year early due to an abdominal tear.

New regulation can raise commercial vehicle prices by 10-12 per cent: ICRA-Telangana Today

New regulation can raise commercial vehicle prices by 10-12 per cent: ICRA

Implementation of multiple proposed regulatory specifications can push up commercial vehicle prices by 10-12 per cent, ratings agency ICRA said on Monday

New Delhi: Implementation of multiple proposed regulatory specifications can push up commercial vehicle prices by 10-12 per cent, ratings agency ICRA said on Monday.

In its report on the Indian commercial vehicle industry, ICRA said the domestic automotive industry is undergoing rapid transformations, with increased focus by the government on implementing emission norms, safety systems and other standards that will bring the country at par with other major automotive markets.

“Within the Indian automotive industry, the commercial vehicle (CV) sector has been the focus, given that CVs account for the major part of vehicular emissions in the country,” it said, adding mandatory standards towards driver comfort and safety can help improve the driving conditions and road safety to a large extent.

Accordingly, ICRA said there have been multiple regulatory interventions in the recent past, with the industry adopting stringent emission standards in a relatively short span of time, as well as driver safety and comfort standards such as advanced braking systems (ABS), speed limiting devices (SLD) and blowers in cabins, with a view to reducing vehicular emissions and improving road safety and driver comfort.

“While these proposed changes can result in a potential cumulative increase of 10-12 per cent in vehicle prices as they get implemented, the benefits in terms of vehicle safety, driver comfort, export potential to developed markets, among others, are expected to outweigh the same,” ICRA said.

The ratings agency pointed out that there are multiple proposed regulatory changes on the anvil such as the mandatory fitment of air-conditioners (ACs) in driver cabins which has already been announced with effect from January 1, 2025.

“In addition, other standards like blind spot information systems, advanced emergency braking systems, roll over protection systems, driver alert systems etc. are proposed to improve road safety and minimise the occurrence as well as impact of road accidents,” it added.

Other regulations like mandatory fitment of fire detection, alarm and suppression systems have also been introduced for select segments like school buses and inter-city buses with effect from October 1, 2023, ICRA said.

Pakistan Cricketer Left Bleeding After Injury. Rahul's Gesture Goes Viral

Pakistan cricket team batter Agha Salman sustained an injury that left his face bloodied during the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against India on Monday. The right-handed batter tried to sweep a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja but the ball bounced and took the top edge of his bat before hitting him straight on the face. He was visibly in pain after the incident and the wound started bleeding as the Pakistan physio rushed onto the field. KL Rahul was one of the first ones on the field to quickly check on him after the incident and his gesture has quickly gone viral on social media following the incident.

Virat Kohli‘s supreme fitness was evident in his 47th ODI century while comeback man KL Rahul produced an equally engaging ton on his comeback as India thrashed a listless Pakistan by a record 228-run margin in a rain-marred Super Four game of the Asia Cup.

This is India’s biggest win in terms of runs against the cross-border neighbours.

India posted an imposing 356 for 2, as Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls) and Rahul (111 not out off 106 balls), which was his sixth ODI hundred, pummeled a hapless Pakistan, whose chase ended at 128 for 8 as Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) scythed through them.

On the century count in ODIs, Kohli now stands just two behind Sachin Tendulkar‘s record 49.

Once India restarted the day from 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, they needed Kohli and Rahul, the two overnight batters, to go big, and they did that in some style.

Along with Rahul, Kohli amassed 233 runs for the unbeaten third wicket stand – the highest ODI partnership for India against Pakistan.

US welcomes India’s move of reducing tariffs on agricultural product

The United States has welcomed the recent Indian move to reduce tariffs on several American agricultural products

US welcomes India’s move of reducing tariffs on agricultural product

Washington: The United States has welcomed the recent Indian move to reduce tariffs on several American agricultural products.

Last week, India agreed to reduce tariffs on certain US products, including frozen turkey, frozen duck, fresh blueberries and cranberries, frozen blueberries and cranberries, dried blueberries and cranberries, as well as processed blueberries and cranberries.

These tariff cuts will expand economic opportunities for US agricultural producers in the critical market and help bring more products from the United States to customers in India, US officials said.

Welcoming the announcement, US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the move will create new market opportunities for US producers and exporters.

“Under the Biden-Harris Administration, USDA (US Department of Agriculture) and USTR (United States Trade Representative) have focused on rebuilding trust and strengthening relationships with our global trading partners, including India, and working through the World Trade Organization and other venues to ensure that those partners live up to their obligations so that US agriculture has full and fair access to key export markets,” Vilsack said.

The recent move follows the lifting of India’s retaliatory tariffs on US apples, chickpeas, lentils, almonds and walnuts, a development that was announced earlier this summer and took effect this week.

“While important progress has been made, significant tariff and non-tariff barriers to American agricultural products accessing the Indian market remain,” Vilsack said.

Senator Amy Klobuchar in a statement welcomed the agreement to lower tariffs on US turkey exports to India. The agreement will lower tariffs on frozen turkey products exports to India from 30 per cent to 5 per cent, she said.

“For too long, high tariffs have prevented American turkey farmers from exporting their products to India,” Klobuchar said.

“That’s why I pushed for a resolution to create an even playing field and reduce trade barriers for American turkey farmers and producers, and I’m glad to see this agreement has been reached,” Klobuchar said.

In a separate statement, Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine said this move will help strengthen the strong partnership between India and the US while generating increased demand for Virginia poultry and supporting economic activity in the Valley.

In 2021, Virginia was the sixth largest turkey source in America after producing 14.5 million birds.

Turkey production plays a key role in Virginia’s poultry industry, which provides a direct economic impact of USD 5.8 billion and contributes USD 13.6 billion in economic activity in the State.

“The National Turkey Federation applauds the efforts by the US and Indian governments to significantly reduce the tariffs. This move creates an important new market for US turkey producers and will give Indians more affordable access to a nutritious, delicious protein,” said Joel Brandenberger, president and CEO of the National Turkey Federation.

“NTF congratulates the Office of the US Trade Representative and the leadership of USDA on this accomplishment, and we thank Senators Mark R. Warner and Thom Tillis for spearheading congressional efforts to ensure US turkey growers are able to effectively compete in this fast-growing marketplace,” he said.
