Spanish teachers rally in Madrid in demand for better public education

Hundreds of teachers marched through the streets of the Spanish capital on Saturday, protesting against the privatization of public education and better working conditions.

“We are here defending public education, it is a very important public service. It is true warranty of equality of conditions between different social sectors. Public education is a true social elevator, the only one that allows the most disadvantaged people to progress socially. And we find a political movement that goes in the opposite direction here in Madrid, that supports concerted and private education to the detriment of public education, which will be left for people with fewer resources”, said one of the protesters.

“We are starting the courses in Madrid and as always, with a shortage of teachers, with classrooms full of students. There is a lack of media, there is a lack of institutes, there is a lack of cabbages. There are many construction booths, many barracks where the kids are thought, and we cannot allow it one more year.”, stated another protester.

The march, which started at the Neptune fountain, went around the center of Madrid and ended in front of the Cibeles palace.

Protesters carried placards and banners displayed by the demonstrators reading ‘Public education, neither bought, nor sold, It is to be defended’, ‘More teachers and more doctors!’, and ‘More investment to the public school’, among others and chanted slogans denouncing privatization.

The Spanish government’s public spending in the educational sector has been repeatedly criticized during similar events throughout the year.

Chennai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was conducting raids at ten places linked to the arrested Tamil Nadu Minister, Senthil Balaji.

The raids were being conducted at the residences and office premises of people who are close to the arrested minister in Coimbatore, Karur and Tiruchi. Senthil Balaji is lodged in Puzhal central prison after he was arrested by the ED on June 14 after raids at his official residence and office in secretariat.

The minister was interrogated and arrested by the ED following money laundering in a job-for-cash scam while he was minister in the previous AIADMK government.

Balaji had immediately after his arrest complained of chest pain and was taken to Omandurar government hospital from where it was diagnosed that he had three blocks in his Coronary artery and doctors preferred a surgery to remove the blocks.

The minister had, however, insisted on conducting the surgery in a private hospital and moved the Madras High Court for the same and got a favourable order. He was operated upon at Kaveri hospital and after his recovery he has been lodged at the medical ward in Puzhal central prison.

The ED has also conducted raids in the premises of Tamil Nadu higher education minister and senior DMK leader, K. Ponmudi.

Washington may ship army tactical missile systems to Ukraine

According to a Monday report, citing three unnamed US officials, Washington is “considering shipping either or both Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) that can fly up to 190 miles (306 kilometers), or Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles with a 45-mile (72-kilometer) range packed with cluster bombs.”

Ukraine is currently equipped with 155-mm artillery with a maximum range of 18 miles carrying up to 48 bomblets. The ATACMS can fire around 300 or more bomblets, while the GMLRS rocket system is capable of dispersing up to 404 cluster munitions.

“If approved, either option would be available for rapid shipment to Kyiv,” the report said.

The munitions are expected to be used against Russian forces present in those Ukrainian territories, which have voted to join Russia since the onset of the war.

Washington has allocated more than $40 billion worth of military aid to Kyiv since last February when the war started.

In September 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree for the formal accession of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia to the Russian Federation, which came following respective referendums in each of those regions.

Kyiv, however, views those referendums as “illegal,” and has been pressing its Western allies to outfit it with long-range weaponry, so it can strike deep within those territories.

Cluster munitions generally eject bomblets that can cover five times as much area as conventional bombs.

They are banned under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) because unexploded bomblets can pose a risk to civilians for years after the fighting is over.

The CCM, which took effect in 2010, bans all use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster bombs. More than 100 countries have signed the treaty, but the US, Russia, and Ukraine are yet to join.

Last month, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov lashed out at the US over its support for Ukraine’s use of the globally-banned munitions, noting that the bombs have already killed a Russian journalist.

Antonov slammed Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder for the latter’s earlier remarks claiming that the US has “all indications” that Ukraine is “properly” employing cluster munitions.

“Attempts by US officials to portray Ukraine’s use of controversial cluster munitions as appropriate and legitimate are shameless and outrageous,” Antonov said, adding, “I would like to know whether ‘the proper use’ of cluster bombs is also true for the assassination of Russian journalist Rostislav Zhuravlev.”

“It was beyond people’s imagination”: BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla on India’s win over Pakistan

Mohali: After India clinched their biggest victory over Pakistan in ODIs in a match of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla praised team India and said that the win was “beyond people’s imagination”.

Fiery centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul followed by Kuldeep Yadav’s five-wicket haul powered India to 228 runs win over their traditional rival Pakistan at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Monday.

“Today Virat Kohli and KL Rahul did wonders, 356 runs on 2 wickets… India made a huge score… It was beyond people’s imagination, the way they demonstrated,” Rajeev Shukla told ANI on Monday.

He also spoke about Virat’s achievement of breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar by completing the fastest 13,000 runs in international cricket.

“Virat Kohli also completed his 13,000 runs in international cricket, he broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar, and this is a huge achievement. This is a big victory for us, so many congratulations to the Indian team,” Rajeev Shukla added.

While Sachin Tendulkar needed 321 innings to reach the milestone, Kohli did so in 267 innings. The only other three batters to reach the mark, Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene, and Sanath Jayasuriya, also required more than 300 innings.

In the match, Virat scored a brilliant 122 off 94 while KL Rahul, who was making his comeback after a long break, smashed a dashing 111 off 106. Kuldeep bagged his second ODI five-for as India clinched a huge 228-run win – Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf didn’t come out to bat in Pakistan’s chase. With this mammoth victory, India clinched the top spot in of Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s table.

Earlier, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s century powered India to 356/2 against arch-rivals Pakistan in their Asia Cup Super Four clash.

Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s half-centuries laid the foundation for India, while the unbeaten 233-run partnership between Kohli and Rahul added the icing on the cake as the former skipper finished the innings in style with a maximum.

Kohli finished his innings with an unbeaten 122, which came from 94 deliveries, while Rahul smashed 111 of 106 balls.

Sebi to curb finfluencers to help investors get accurate, unbiased info-Telangana Today

The proposed move by Sebi not only ensures that investors receive accurate and unbiased information but also helps in preserving authenticity and reducing fraud

Sebi to curb finfluencers to help investors get accurate, unbiased info

New Delhi: The rise of financial influencers or finfluencers, who charge as high as Rs 7.5 lakh for a post on social media, introduced a new way for people to access and interpret financial information, and now they will soon come under the regulatory purview as Sebi proposed measures to curb their mushrooming numbers.

The proposed move by Sebi not only ensures that investors receive accurate and unbiased information but also helps in preserving authenticity and reducing fraud, Anand Rathi Wealth Deputy CEO Feroz Azeez told PTI.

Under the proposal, finfluencers need to be registered with Sebi and adhere to specific guidelines. Also, it has been proposed to ban unregistered finfluencers from partnering with mutual funds and stockbrokers for promotional activities.

While many finfluencers provide valuable insights, there has been a growing concern over the potential risks associated with unregulated finfluencers who might offer biased or misleading advice. They usually work on a commission-based model.

“Finfluencers charge as little as Rs 10,000 to as much as Rs 7.5 lakh for an individual post, excluding tax. Influencer marketing agencies quote as much as Rs 20 lakh for a campaign, plus taxes, to entice their followers,” Azeez said.

In addition, many of them make money from referral fees or profit sharing for promoting the product, channel, platform, or services or get compensation directly from social media and other platforms.

To address the risk associated with finfluencers, Sebi floated a consultation paper late last month proposing to restrict the association of registered intermediaries or regulated entities with unregistered influencers.

In an era where financial advice is increasingly disseminated through social media, the line between credible advice and misleading information can become blurred.

By requiring finfluencers to register with Sebi and adhere to specific guidelines, the regulator is setting a standard for accountability and expertise in the sector, Sonam Srivastava, Founder and Fund Manager at Wright Research, PMS, said.

“The regulatory move to address the role of financial influencers, or finfluencers in the financial sector is undoubtedly significant in enhancing investor protection and promoting transparency in the industry,” Anand Rathi Wealth’s Azeez said.

Also, the capital markets regulator has proposed measures on disrupting the revenue model for unregistered finfluencers and ensuring that they adhere to proper disclosure and disclaimer practices. This will help create a more accountable and reliable environment for investors seeking financial guidance, he said.

Finfluencers have significantly impacted their followers’ financial decisions in the last few years and thus Sebi’s proposed regulatory framework can make them accountable and responsible for the advice they provide, Tejas Khoday, Co-founder and CEO of FYERS, said.

Further, finfluencers registered with Sebi or stock exchanges or AMFI are expected to display their appropriate registration number, contact details, and investor grievance redressal helpline, and make appropriate disclosure and disclaimer on any posts.

Khoday said that the new regulations could help prevent conflict of interest and recommendation bias, which usually overlooks their followers’ risk profiles. However, it is also essential to balance regulation and innovation.

“The proposed rules should harness the power of digital media to increase the overall financial awareness of the population fairly and transparently without compromising the far-reaching social media penetration so far,” he added.

Also, the regulator has proposed to create a closed ecosystem for fee collection by Sebi-registered Investment Advisers (IAs) and Research Analysts (RAs) from their clients.

This ecosystem will help investors ensure that their payments are reaching only registered IAs and RAs. This would also help investors identify, isolate, and avoid unregistered entities, who would be unable to access this closed ecosystem.

Juventus Midfielder Paul Pogba Provisionally Suspended For Doping

Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba has been provisionally suspended after a doping control detected elevated levels of testosterone, Italian anti-doping authorities (Nado) told AFP on Monday. After a nightmare season between injuries and a blackmail affair, the 30-year-old’s dreams of bouncing back were shattered by the alleged doping offence after Juventus’s 3-0 win at Udinese on August 20, during which he was an unused substitute.

On Monday, the 2018 world champion had told Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera of his “desire to play” after a “difficult year” which could have “destroyed” him.

Instead he received a new blow.

Nado said Pogba had violated anti-doping rules when they found the prohibited substance “non-endogenous testosterone metabolites”.

Juventus said in a statement that Pogba had “received a precautionary suspension”.

“The club reserves the right to consider the next procedural steps,” the statement added.

The test concerns the ‘A’ sample, and if the ‘B’ sample also tests positive for testosterone Pogba could face a four-year ban.

In a message sent to AFP, Pogba’s agent Rafaela Pimenta said she was “awaiting the second sample and cannot have an opinion before the results”.

“What is certain is that Paul Pogba never wanted to break a rule,” she added.

‘Difficult year’

Pogba rejoined Juventus in July 2022 from Manchester United.

From 2012 to 2016 he had helped Juve win four Serie A titles and two Italian Cups, and reach the Champions League final in 2015.

Pogba had been a star player in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph but his 2022-2023 season was blighted by injury and a multi-million euro blackmail plot involving childhood friends and one of his brothers.

He played just ten games for Juventus that season and missed the 2022 World Cup with France.

Last season he played six Serie A games but had been slated for a return to action against Lazio at the weekend and said in the interview with Al Jazeera he was raring to go.

“I’ve had a difficult year so I’ve this anger and this wish to play football,” Pogba told Al Jazeera.

“The only people that can hurt you are the people close to you. Enemies you know where they are, but friends, family, that you think they’re happy for you, they can destroy you,” he said.

“You have to be careful, money change people, can break up a family,” he said of the multimillion euros extortion efforts by former friends and his own brother Mattias.

Pogba said that at times he had been deeply demotivated by the matter.

“I was just by myself thinking I don’t want to have money anymore, I don’t want to play anymore, I just want to be with normal people, so they will love me for me, not for the fame, not for the money,” he said.

After this latest setback Pogba now faces an anxious wait for the result of his ‘B’ test.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said a society without forests, environment and greenary, was unimaginable. Considering the importance of environmental balance, he said the Telangana government formulated an action plan soon after the State formation, which ensured significant progress in the last decade.

In a message delivered on the occasion of the Forest Martyrs’ Day on Monday, the Chief Minister said the State government’s flagship programme “Telangana ku Haritaharam“, yielded remarkable results in reforestation and increasing the green cover in the State. Further, the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH/IAHP) presented the prestigious “World Green City Award – 2022” to Hyderabad, for improving green cover in the city which otherwise was turning into an urban concrete jungle.

Despite the advancements in development and technology, Chandrashekhar Rao reiterated that environmental conservation remains a primary mission for Telangana. He acknowledged the global challenges posed by climate change due to insufficient environmental protection measures and stressed the shared responsibility of preserving the planet for current and future generations.

The Chief Minister called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in achieving Telangana’s green target of 33 per cent, emphasising the critical role of environmental protection. He lauded the commendable efforts of the Forest department in this regard.

On the occasion, Chandrashekhar Rao paid tribute to 22 officers and staff of the Forest department who lost their lives while serving the mission of forest protection. “Their dedication and sacrifice serve as an inspiration to the entire State. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the preservation of forests,” he said.

To honour their memory, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the slogan “Jungal Bachao – Jungle Badao” (Save the Forests, Expand the Forests), and called upon all the people to pledge their support for the noble cause.

US moves to advance prisoner swap deal with Iran, release USD 6 billion in frozen Iranian funds

In addition, as part of the deal, the administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States

US moves to advance prisoner swap deal with Iran, release USD 6 billion in frozen Iranian funds

Washington: The Biden administration has cleared the way for the release of five American citizens detained in Iran by issuing a blanket waiver for international banks to transfer USD 6 billion in frozen Iranian money from South Korea to Qatar without fear of US sanctions.

In addition, as part of the deal, the administration has agreed to release five Iranian citizens held in the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the sanctions waivers late last week, a month after US and Iranian officials said an agreement in principle was in place. Congress was not informed of the waiver decision until Monday, according to the notification, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The outlines of the deal had been previously announced and the waiver was expected. But the notification marked the first time the administration said it was releasing five Iranian prisoners as part of the deal. The prisoners have not been named.
The waiver drew criticism of President Joe Biden from Republicans and others who say the deal will boost the Iranian economy at a time when Iran poses a growing threat to US troops and Mideast allies.

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said “it’s ridiculous for US to be blackmailed into paying USD 6 billion for hostages which will help indirectly finance the number 1 foreign policy of Iran: terrorism.” Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas accused Biden of “paying ransom to the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism”.

Another Iran hawk, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said the waivers were a sign the administration was secretly pursuing a broader deal with Iran to include more than the release of the detainees.

“Today’s news confirms there has already been a side deal including a USD 6 billion ransom and the release of Iranian operatives,” Cruz said in a statement.

The White House pushed back on all criticism of the waiver decision, saying it was only a “procedural step” aimed at fulfilling the tentative agreement reached with Iran in August.

“What is being pursued here is an arrangement wherein we secure the release of 5 wrongfully held Americans,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. “This remains a sensitive and ongoing process. While this is a step in the process, no individuals have been or will be released into US custody this week.” The waiver means that European, Middle Eastern and Asian banks will not run afoul of US sanctions in converting the money frozen in South Korea and transferring it to Qatar’s central bank, where it will be held for Iran to use for the purchase of humanitarian goods.

The transfer of the USD 6 billion was the critical element in the prisoner release deal, which saw four of the five American detainees transferred from Iranian jails into house arrest last month. The fifth detainee had already been under house arrest.

Due to numerous US sanctions on foreign banks that engage in transactions aimed at benefitting Iran, several European countries had balked at participating in the transfer. Blinken’s waiver is aimed at easing their concerns about any risk of US sanctions.

People familiar with negotiations said they expect the detainees will be released as early as next week.

The American prisoners include Siamak Namazi, who was detained in 2015 and was later sentenced to 10 years in prison on internationally criticized spying charges; Emad Sharghi, a venture capitalist sentenced to 10 years; and Morad Tahbaz, a British-American conservationist of Iranian descent who was arrested in 2018 and also received a 10-year sentence. The fourth and fifth prisoners were not identified.

“To facilitate their release, the United States has committed to release five Iranian nationals currently held in the United States and to permit the transfer of approximately USD 6 billion in restricted Iranian funds held in (South Korea) to restricted accounts in Qatar, where the funds will be available only for humanitarian trade,” Blinken wrote.

The sanctions waiver applies to banks and other financial institutions in South Korea, Germany, Ireland, Qatar and Switzerland.

“I determine that it is in the national security interest of the United States to waive the imposition of sanctions … with respect to foreign financial institutions under the primary jurisdiction of Germany, Ireland, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, and Switzerland that are notified directly in writing by the US government, to the extent necessary for such institutions to engage in transactions occurring on or after August 9, 2023,” Blinken wrote.

Sanctions waivers apply to transactions involving previously penalized entities such as the National Iranian Oil Company and Central Bank of Iran “to transfer funds from accounts in the Republic of Korea to accounts in Switzerland and Germany and from accounts in Switzerland and Germany to accounts in Qatar, and to use the transferred funds for further humanitarian transactions in accordance with written guidance from the US Government”, he wrote.

Iranian hackers penetrate networks of over 30 Israeli firms

Israel’s Ynetnews website reported on Monday that the information security company ESET found that what it called Iranian hackers took advantage of a known weakness in the corporate email servers of 32 Israeli companies to introduce a backdoor, allowing them to enter their networks.

The cyber security company, which declined to disclose the names of the hacked companies, said the purported Iranian hackers also broke into a company in Brazil and another in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to the report, the hacked companies operate in diverse fields, including insurance, medicine, industry, communications, IT, technology, retail, automobile, law, financial services, architecture and civil engineering.

Ynetnews said the hacking group identified itself as Ballistic Bobcat, which is also known by other names, including Charming Kitten, TA543 or PHOSPHORUS as well as APT35/42. It said at least 16 other companies were affected by secondary attackers.

The Israeli regime has targeted Iran on many occasions either directly or by instigating and providing support for the actual perpetrators.

Back in 2012, The Washington Post reported that the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA), its spy service CIA, and Israel’s military had worked together to launch malware, named Stuxnet, against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

In retaliation, Iranian hacking groups purportedly operate against targets in Israel.

Back in late 2020, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz claimed a group of elite hackers it introduced as Iranians had advanced as far as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and the regime’s major aerospace company.
