Air India acquires first Airbus A350-900 through finance lease

New Delhi: Air India on Friday said that it has acquired India’s first Airbus A350-900 aircraft through a finance lease transaction with HSBC.

According to airline officials, the transaction makes Air India the first scheduled carrier to have acquired an aircraft from an entity registered in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). The A350-900 is also the first widebody aircraft to have been leased through India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

“The transaction was facilitated by AI Fleet Services Limited (AIFS), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Air India, and a GIFT IFSC-registered finance company,” said the officials.

“This landmark transaction marks the beginning of our aircraft leasing business from GIFT IFSC, as AIFS will be the primary Air India Group entity for widebody aircraft financing, playing a pivotal role in the future aircraft financing strategy for us and our subsidiaries,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial & Transformation Officer, Air India.

“It is also a shot in the arm for the development of a robust aviation ecosystem in India. As a flag-bearer of the country, Air India is happy to support the Government of India’s efforts to develop an aircraft leasing hub in GIFT IFSC,” said Aggarwal.

“IFSCA has been working with the stakeholders to develop regulatory enablers for aircraft leasing and financing. The steps taken by Air India by establishing a finance company for the purpose of aircraft leasing and financing at IFSC will go long way in developing IFSC as a preferred destination for aircraft leasing and financing in India as well as globally,” mentioned Dipesh Shah, Executive Director, IFSCA.

The first of Air India’s six Airbus A350-900 is expected to arrive in the country by the end of this year, with the remaining one scheduled for deliveries through March 2024.

In addition to the six Airbus A350-900 aircraft, Air India’s orders for 470 new aircraft include 34 A350-1000, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft, as well as 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft.

Air India had signed purchase agreements to acquire these aircraft with Airbus and Boeing on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show held in June this year.

Karnataka Bandh: 44 Flights cancelled, 5 activists arrested at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: Five activists were arrested while trying to stage a protest inside the Bengaluru airport on Friday, and the authorities cancelled the departure and arrival of 44 flights in view of the Karnataka bandh called by pro-Kannada organisations over the Cauvrey water issue

The flights scheduled to fly to metro cities New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and other destinations have been cancelled, sources confirmed.

According to sources, the activists had purchased a ticket for the Indigo 7731 flight and entered the premises of the Bengaluru airport at 9.50 a.m. They were planning to stage a protest near the flight. The authorities took them into custody as they were preparing to stage the protest. The protesters were taken into custody and handed over to the police. The official statement in this regard is yet to be made by the police department.

Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy urged the state government to immediately release the Kannada activists taken into custody or arrested while staging protests over the Cauvery issue.

“The whole state has responded well to the Karnataka bandh call. All should be united when it comes to the interests of the state. The integrity and unity of the state should be a warning bell to the neighbouring states,” he stated without taking the name of Tamil Nadu. “The feelings of Kannada people should not be trampled upon,” he said.

“We extend total support to the bandh from JD(S). The agitation for Cauvery has become inevitable under the present circumstances. The government in Karnataka is practicing appeasement politics. The politics should not be carried over the Cauvery issue. Tamil Nadu is receiving good rainfall and predictions of rain are also positive. Still, the quarrel is made for water. The state government in Karnataka is not taking a stand for the people,” Kumaraswamy stated.

The agitators ridiculed and torched the effigies of 28 MPs from Karnataka for not speaking for the state over the Cauvery issue. Among the 28 MLAs, 25 are from BJP, one each from JD(S) and Congress. Another is an independent candidate presently supporting the BJP.

Israel SC hears challenges to law aimed at protecting PM from removal

Jerusalem: Israel’s Supreme Court has heard arguments challenging a controversial law that makes it harder to remove an incumbent prime minister.

An 11-judge panel of the court’s 15 judges convened for the discussion on Thursday, which was chaired by Chief Justice Esther Hayut, reports Xinhua news agency.

They discussed appeals against a law known as the “incapacitation law” that was passed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition in March. The new law limits the conditions for declaring an Israeli prime minister unfit for office, which reduces the possibility of removing Netanyahu for conflict of interest over his ongoing corruption trial. During the court discussion, several judges said that the law seems to be intended for the personal benefit of Netanyahu amid a graft trial.

Hayut suggested that to avoid the appearance of a law personally tailored for Netanyahu, the applicability of the law should be postponed until after the next elections. The hearing was the latest in several legal challenges against the contentious judicial reform which has been promoted by the most right-wing government in Israel’s history and has sparked months of mass protests across the country.

IOC releases new consensus statement for athlete health protection

Geneva: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has published a new Consensus Statement aimed at protecting athletes’ health.

The consensus was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and centered on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), a syndrome affecting health and performance caused by a mismatch between calories eaten and burned during exercise, the IOC said.

The IOC said it had led the way in research into REDs, which affects multiple body systems and functions as well as athlete performance, and was first recognized as a distinct entity by the IOC in 2014, reports Xinhua.

The statement found that “the syndrome often goes unrecognized by athletes themselves and their coaches and team clinicians, and may be unintentionally exacerbated by ‘sports culture’ due to the perceived short-term performance gains from limiting calorie intake.”

“REDs is common in both male and female athletes in many sports, and although we understand a lot more about its causes, awareness of the syndrome, and its consequences for health and performance, is still low among athletes, their medical and performance support teams, and the general public,” said professor Margo Mountjoy, IOC Medical and Scientific Commission Games Group member and the statement’s lead author.

Japanese protesters rally against military expansion amid high inflation

Many Japanese took to the street in Tokyo, protesting the government’s constant pursuit of military expansion in disregard of the current severe inflation and increasing pressure on people’s livelihoods.

The participants, holding banners, gathered at a bustling business district in Tokyo, demanding that the government should abide by the Constitution’s Article 9 and adhere to peace diplomacy, stop following the US strategy of military expansion, and allocate more financial fund to areas that foster economic development.

“The prices are soaring in Japan, and an increasing number of people are falling into poverty, so there are many areas where the funds should be allocated. I think it is totally wrong to spend the money on increasing defense expenditure,” said a protester.

“I hope the government can seriously consider the livelihood issue and what will happen in the future. The prices will rise continually, and even meeting some basic needs like food will become a problem. All these issues are interconnected, and I hope everyone can understand that,” said another protester.

Other protesters emphasized that Japan should halt its pursuit of military expansion and instead draw lessons from its history of invasion, which inflicted immense harm upon the peoples of Asia.

“Given the historical fact that many innocent people were killed by the Japanese army, it is imperative to prevent any recurrence of war,” said a protester.

In recent years, Japan has persistently violated its pacifist constitution by significantly bolstering its defense forces and repeatedly increasing its defense expenditure to record high levels. This alarming trend has posed a grave threat to the regional peace and stability.

Violent clashes continue in Khartoum, 13 civilians dead

Khartoum: Violent clashes have continued between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in capital Khartoum, killing 13 civilians, according to witnesses and local media.

“Today, violent clashes took place in the vicinity of the army’s Engineers Corps in Omdurman, while large areas of the Umbada neighbourhood of the city came under violent artillery shelling,” a witness from Omdurman, west of the Sudanese capital, told Xinhua news agency late Thursday.

He said the artillery and air bombardment focused on western parts of the Umbada neighborhood and the army-controlled Karari military base in northern Omdurman. The Resistance Committee of Umbada neighborhood said in a statement on Thursday that “the neighbourhood experienced violent artillery bombardment, which left 13 civilians dead and 35 others wounded”.

Also on Thursday, the independent Sudan Tribune news portal cited witnesses as saying that “they heard strong explosions caused by artillery shells fired by the RSF towards the army’s positions in central Khartoum”. The RSF artillery strikes mainly targeted the army headquarters in central Khartoum, causing heavy smoke columns, the news portal said.

A witness from eastern Khartoum told Xinhua that the SAF warplanes bombarded the RSF posts in Imtidad Nasir neighbourhood east of the capital. Meanwhile, the Sudanese Emergency Lawyers, an activist group initiative concerned with monitoring violations, said in a report on Wednesday that between April 16 and Sept. 19, 954 civilians have been killed and 2,434 others injured in both sides’ bombardment in the Khartoum State, El-Obeid, the capital city of North Kordofan and Nyala, the capital city of South Darfur State.

“130 children and 94 women were among the dead, with Khartoum recording 647 deaths, El-Obeid 79 deaths, and Nyala 228 deaths,” the report said. Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the SAF and the RSF in Khartoum and other areas since April 15, resulting in at least 3,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries, according to figures released by the Sudanese Health Ministry.

According to the latest report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), some 5.3 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan. Over one million people have crossed into neighboring countries, including the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan, OCHA said.
