Saudi-Israel normalization ‘impossible’ if Palestinian state is prerequisite: Pompeo

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ruled out the possibility of a normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and the Israeli regime if such an agreement required the creation of an independent Palestinian state with the occupied al-Quds as its capital.

Pompeo made the comment in an interview with Israel’s Jerusalem Post newspaper on Wednesday after Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Palestine Nayef bin Bandar al-Sudairi made an official visit to the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

During the visit, Sudairi underlined that creating a Palestinian state with the occupied al-Quds as its capital would be the “central point” of any prospective agreement with the illegal entity.

“It is impossible to imagine a two-state solution with the current Palestinian leadership,” Pompeo said, accusing the Palestinian Authority (PA) of “underwriting terrorism, taking money from Iran, paying citizens to kill Israelis,” without providing evidence for his claims.

The former US diplomat added, “It is very difficult to imagine how one would strike a deal with the very leaders that have rejected every reasonable offer with which they have been presented.”

Stressing that every US president, whether Democratic or Republican, would support a normalization agreement, Pompeo said it is in the US’s interest to have security relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia and between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Sudairi, who is also the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, was appointed last month as the kingdom’s non-resident ambassador to Palestine and consul general in al-Quds.

The Israeli regime claims occupied al-Quds as its own capital, a status recognized by the United States under then-president Donald Trump in 2017 but not by other world countries. Israeli authorities bar Palestinian diplomatic activity in the city.

The Saudi ambassador’s appointment came amid reports that the Persian Gulf kingdom is considering the prospect of establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel under US pressure.

In late July, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced that a deal for Israel and Saudi Arabia to normalize relations may be on the horizon following National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s talks with Saudi officials in Jeddah.

In order to sign a deal with Israel, Riyadh publicly asked Tel Aviv to implement the 2002 so-called Arab Peace Initiative, which conditions normalizing ties with Israel on the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

However, members of the far-right Israeli regime, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, say they will not make any concession to the Palestinians as part of a potential deal for normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia.

Washington’s efforts to add Saudi Arabia to the list of Arab countries that have signed the Abraham Accords come at a critical time when Biden is seeking re-election and Washington has failed to pull the kingdom farther from China’s orbit and hamper Beijing’s efforts to expand its influence in West Asia.

The UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco signed US-brokered normalization agreements with Israel in 2020 under former hawkish President Donald Trump, drawing condemnations from Palestinians who censured the deals as “a stab in the back of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people.”

Delhi HC restrains unauthorised streaming of ICC World Cup

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has restrained online platforms from unauthorisedly broadcasting and streaming the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The court’s order came on a lawsuit by Star India Pvt Ltd and Novi Digital Entertainment Pvt Ltd which operates Disney+ Hotstar platform.

The plaintiffs said they have the exclusive global media rights, including the television and digital rights for various ICC events like the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from October 5 to November 19.

They said being one of the most popular sporting events in the world, a large number of websites were likely to indulge in unauthorised dissemination of the World Cup content.

Justice Prathiba M Singh observed that undoubtedly the World Cup cricket matches were “extremely popular, especially in the Indian subcontinent” and rogue websites, which in the past have also indulged in piracy, were very likely to continue the authorised streaming.

“Thus, there is a need to restrain any rogue websites from disseminating and communicating to the public any part of the cricket match events without authorisation or license from the plaintiffs,” the court said in a recent order.

“Accordingly, defendant Nos.1 to 9 (various rogue websites which are stated to be primarily hosting illegal and pirated content) are restrained by an ad-interim order from communicating, screening, making available or disseminating any part of the ICC World Cup Cricket matches on any electronic or digital platform in any manner whatsoever,” ordered the court.

If an injunction is not granted at this stage, irreparable harm would be caused to the plaintiffs, the court stated.

It further directed the authorities concerned to block and suspend the websites and clarified that if any further offending websites are discovered, the plaintiff can communicate their details to both Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Electronics and internet service provider for issuance of blocking orders.

US cop removed from patrol duty over insensitive comments on Jaahnavi Kandula’s death”

New York: A US cop who joked and laughed in a bodycam video about Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula‘s death by a police SUV this year, has been taken off patrol duty, police said.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) on Thursday confirmed that Officer Daniel Auderer “has been administratively reassigned to a non-operational position”, The Seattle Times reported.

Auderer, a member of the SPD’s traffic squad and vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, came under investigation over a clip from his body camera in which he is heard saying that Kandula’s life had “limited value” and the city should “just write a check”.

The video clip prompted international condemnation with leaders, lawmakers and advocacy groups calling for Audrer’s dismissal from the police service.

Defending himself in a letter to Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) earlier this month, Auderer wrote that the comments were not made with “malice” and hard heart.

Stating that he “lamented” Kandula’s death, he wrote that it was unfortunate that her death would “turn into lawyers arguing ‘the value of human life”.

Following his letter, the SPOG issued a statement saying the conversation has been taken out of context and that Auderer, in a call with Guild President Mike Solan, was mocking attorneys who will try to put a price tag on the young woman’s life.

Last week, the Seattle’s Community Police Commission recommended that the officer under investigation for joking about Kandula’s death be placed on leave and his pay be withheld.

The Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability launched a probe on August 2 after an SPD employee, going through the body camera video for the investigation, was upset by the conversation and reported it to an SPD lawyer.

Kandula, a student of Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union, was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle driven by officer Kevin Dave at a pedestrian crossing on the night of January 23.

Auderer was assigned to see whether Dave was under any influence.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, considering whether to pursue charges against Dave.

Toronto: With Canada-India relations worsening after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey in June, various Canadian government agencies have reported cyberattacks from India.

Calling these attacks nuisance, Canada’s signals-intelligence agency said various government institutions have been hit even though systems serving federal departments and agencies continued to operate normally, according to CTV network.

The Canadian Armed Forces website was among those impacted by the cyberattacks for hours on Wednesday. We have no indication of broader impacts to our systems, said military spokeswoman Andree-Anne Poulin. Calling it a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack when bots stop websites by multiple visits, Canadian defence minister Bill Blair said: That’s a very common thing that happens, unfortunately, often. But our cyber officials and security officials acted very, very quickly. It was a minor inconvenience, and there is further work going on that we will eventually make a determination on.

The House of Commons website was also impacted on Thursday due to a DDoS attack. House of Commons systems responded as planned to protect our network and IT infrastructure. However, some websites may be unresponsive for a short period, House of Commons spokeswoman Amelie Crosson said on Thursday.

The House of Commons IT support team, in collaboration with our partners, have implemented mitigating measures and restored services to appropriate service levels. The IT team is still continuously monitoring for such activities, she added.
