New Delhi: Gross leasing of office space rose 2 per cent across six major cities to 13.2 million square feet during the July-September period driven by sharp increase in demand in Hyderabad, according to Colliers India.

The gross absorption of office space stood at 12.9 million square feet in the year-ago period. Gross absorption does not include lease renewals, pre-commitments and deals where only a letter of intent has been signed.

Real estate consultant Colliers India on Friday released the data of key office markets for the third quarter of 2023 calendar year, showing that the demand increased in four cities — Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai — but decreased in Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR.

As per the data, the gross office space leasing in Bengaluru declined to 3.4 million square feet during July-September from 4.4 million square feet in the year-ago period.

Delhi-NCR market too saw a fall in leasing to 3.2 million square feet from 4.3 million square feet.

On the positive side, the leasing of office space in Hyderabad jumped 2.5-fold to 2.5 million square feet from 1 million square feet.

In Mumbai, the absorption of office rose marginally to 1.7 million square feet from 1.6 million square feet.

The gross leasing of office space in Chennai grew to 1.4 million square feet from 1 million square feet.

In Pune, the absorption of office space increased to 1 million square feet from 0.6 million square feet.

“Contrary to earlier belief, India office demand for the first three quarters of 2023, has followed an overall trajectory almost similar to 2022. With strong domestic macro-economic indicators backing the demand for office space, the momentum is likely to continue in the last quarter of the year,” Peush Jain, Managing Director, Office Services, India at Colliers, said.

It would be interesting to see if 2023 could breach the historic high leasing activity of 2022, he added.

Arpit Mehrotra, Managing Director, Office Services, South & Head of Flex at Colliers India, said, “Although Bengaluru will continue to dominate India leasing activity in 2023, Chennai and Hyderabad are likely to see greater demand acceleration in the last quarter of the year.”

Iran FM spox strongly condemns Pakistan explosion

In a statement on Friday, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Nasser Kan’ani reacted to an explosion in a gathering to celebrate an Eid-i-Miladun Nabi in one of the cities of Baluchistan province of Pakistan and strongly condemned the terrorist act.

He expressed condolences to the government and people of Pakistan, especially the survivors of the terrorist attack and wished the injured good health and speedy recovery.

The spokesman considered the terrorist act carried out against the gathering to celebrate the holy prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary as clearly showing the terrorists’ distance from the merciful teachings of the Prophet of Islam.

At least 52 people were killed — including a police officer — and around 50 were injured in what officials believe was a suicide blast near a Rabiul Awwal procession in Balochistan’s Mastung district on Friday.

From Sachin to Rohit, here are India’s top performers in ‘ICC World Cup’ history

New Delhi: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India is just a few days away from starting officially. With the tournament taking place in familiar subcontinent conditions, the Indian team will be under a lot of scrutiny.

Legacies of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, playing their third or fourth WC in their mid/late 30s will be determined in this tournament, as fans will hope that they perform well in home conditions to help India lift the trophy.

On the other hand, exciting talents like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Siraj will be playing in the tournament for the first time.

During the span of these one and a half months, a lot of legends will solidify their names in history while many exciting stars will launch themselves into superstardom. The difference between writing history and dissapointment would be just one knock, one bowling spell or an outstanding piece of fielding, as it has been for years at this marquee event. As the tournament draws closer, let us look at some Indian stars who have etched their name in history books with their performances:

1).Sachin Tendulkar

The Indian batting maestro is the leading run-scorer in WC history. In 45 matches and 44 innings, he scored 2,278 runs at an average of 56.95 and a strike rate of 88.98. He scored six centuries and 15 half-centuries in his WC career, with the best score of 152. He also has the most centuries in World Cup history. He had the most runs in the 1996 and 2003 editions of the tournament with 523 runs and 673 runs respectively. Tendulkar’s 673 runs in 2003 is the highest number of runs scored by a batter in a single edition of the tournament.

2).Virat Kohli

The man who took the baton from Sachin Tendulkar and carried forward his legacy with a very similar consistency, delightful strokeplay and emotive connection with millions of fans has a lot to do in this tournament. Be it breaking Sachin’s record of 49 ODI centuries, being the chase master he is or breaking the knockouts curse by scoring a match-winning knock, a lot is being expected from Virat playing in front of his home crowd. In 26 matches, he has scored 1,030 runs at an average of 46.81 and a strike rate of 86.70. He has two centuries and six fifties in 26 innings, with the best score of 107. He is India’s second-highest run-scorer in tournament history.

3).Sourav Ganguly

Popularly known as ‘Dada’, this legendary left-hander bossed his opponents in the World Cups with his captaincy and his classy, effortless off-side strokes. In 21 matches, he scored 1,006 runs at an average of 55.58, with four centuries and three fifties in 21 innings, with the best score of 183. He is India’s third-highest run-scorer in WC history.

4).Rohit Sharma

The ‘Hitman’ of Team India orders hits out his opponents out of the park like no other. The man known for his classy pull shot has made a lot of impact in the two World Cups he played. In the first, he had a crucial role with Shikhar Dhawan to take India to the semis. In 2019, he ended up as the leading run-scorer and also the only player to hit five centuries in a single edition of WC. In 17 WC matches, he has scored 978 runs at an average of 65.20 and a strike rate of 95.97. He has scored six centuries and three fifties in 17 innings, with the best score of 140. His tally of 648 runs with five centuries and a fifty in nine games in 2019 is considered as one of the best performances in a global cricket tournament ever.

5).Zaheer Khan

The services of this India left-arm pacer are missed dearly as he provided heavy variation to the side with his bowling. In 23 WC matches, he has taken 44 wickets at an average of 20.22 and best bowling figures of 4/42. He won the World Cup with India in 2011 and finished as joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps. He is India’s highest wicket-taker in WC history and sixth overall.

6).Javagal Srinath

India’s partner in pace with the likes of Venkatesh Prasad, Zaheer Khan etc, Srinath also delivered well in World Cups. He took 44 wickets in 34 matches at an average of 27.81. His best bowling figures are 4/30 in World Cups. He was a part of India’s runners-up finishing 2003 WC team, taking 16 scalps in 11 matches. He is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in WCs and joint-sixth overall.

7).Mohammed Shami

Having made his World Cup debut in 2015, he has been one of India’s top performers at the tournament. He is eyeing the WC records of two legends mentioned above him as in just 11 matches, he has 31 wickets at an average of 15.70 and the best bowling figures of 5/69. He is only the second Indian to have a World Cup hat-trick to his name. His seam position, pace and intensity make him a difficult bowler to play.

8).Anil Kumble

This tall spinner is among the most successful spinners in World Cup history. In 18 matches, he has taken 31 wickets at an average of 22.83, with the best figures of 4/32.

Scores killed in two separate blasts targeting mosques in Pakistan

At least 52 people have been killed and more than 80 people injured in an explosion in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, according to local officials.

The blast took place near a mosque in Mastung city on Friday as people were gathering to celebrate the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), local assistant commissioner Attahul Munim told local media.

Mastung’s deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Nawaz Gashkori, who was present in the rally, was also killed.

Other officials said the explosion was a “suicide blast” and that the bomber exploded himself next to DSP’s car. They said the wounded were being shifted to hospitals and medical facilities.

The death toll is expected to rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.

Hours after the blast in Balochistan province, another blast ripped through a mosque in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province which also borders Afghanistan, killing at least two people.

The mosque’s roof collapsed in the blast, leaving about 30 to 40 people trapped under the rubble, local broadcaster Geo News reported.

Pakistani officials condemned the attacks, blaming the move on enemies wanting to sow discord in the region.

“The enemy wants to destroy religious tolerance and peace in Balochistan with foreign blessings,” Balochistan interim information minister Jan Achakzai said. “The explosion is unbearable.”

Achakzai said caretaker chief minister Ali Mardan Domki has ordered security forces to arrest those responsible for the blast. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan’s caretaker interior minister, Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, also condemned the blast, stating that “terrorists have no faith or religion”. He said all the resources were mobilized for the rescue operation.

Iran condemned the acts of terrorism, as it offered condolences to the government and people of Pakistan, especially the survivors of the victims, and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kana’ani said the attacks are “a clear example of terrorists’ aloofness from the merciful teachings of the Prophet of Islam”.

Over the past few months, Mastung has been the scene of frequent acts of violence linked to nationalists and separatists.

Earlier this month, at least 11 people, including religious leader Hafiz Hamdullah, were injured in a blast in the same district. Before that, a tax official was gunned down at a bus stand by unidentified men who also wounded two bystanders.

In May, a polio vaccination team was targeted in the Killi Sour Karez area on the outskirts of Mastung, killing its policeman escort.

Moreover, three people were killed and six others injured last year in a bomb attack targeting two vehicles in the mountainous area of Qabu in Mastung.

Back in 2018, at least 128 people, including politician Nawabzada Siraj Raisani, were killed and more than 200 were injured in a bombing attack in the same district.

2nd explosion in Pakistan on Friday leaves many casualties

Local Pakistani media including the Dawn newspaper has reported on a second explosion on Friday in the country.

Hangu District Police Officer Nisar Ahmed confirmed the casualties and injuries to Dawn.com.

He said the explosion took place during the Friday sermon. “The roof of the mosque caved in due to the impact of the explosion,” the official stated, adding that nearly 30 to 40 people were reported to be stuck under the rubble.

The official further said that heavy machinery had been called to retrieve the bodies and wounded persons.

Dawn.com’s correspondent present at the site said Rescue 1122 teams and locals in the area are leading the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, the KP government has imposed an emergency in hospitals across Hangu and Kohat, DPO Ahmed confirmed.

This was the second blast reported from Pakistan on Friday.

At least 52 people were killed — including a police officer — and around 50 were injured in what officials believe was a suicide blast near a Rabiul Awwal procession in Balochistan’s Mastung district on Friday, Dawn reported.

Indian Shooters Sizzle, Record Best-Ever Medals Haul At Asian Games

The young Indian shooting brigade sizzled at the Asian Games, steam-rolling the rivals to win two gold and three silver on Friday and record their best-ever medal haul in the continental showpiece. The grand success of the shooters over the last six days has seen them amass 18 medals so far, including six gold and seven silver, surpassing the 14 they had won during the 2006 Doha Asian Games in an era dominated by the likes of the legendary Jaspal Rana.

Palak Gulia and Esha Singh made it a one-two in individual 10m air pistol, while the trio of Esha, Palak and Divya won India a team silver in the event, before the triumvirate of Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran added another team gold in 50m rifle 3 positions.

The baby-faced 22-year-old Aishwary added another individual silver in rifle 3 positions, fighting an early elimination before finishing second best to a Chinese marksman, who set an Asian Games record.

Two teenaged dreamy-eyed shooters, Palak Gulia and Esha Singh, set ablaze the shooting range by powering to a gold-silver finish in 10m air pistol event.

In one of the most trailblazing efforts seen by the Indians, the young duo challenged each other for the top podium finish until 17-year-old Palak clinched the gold medal and Esha the silver.

Pakistan’s Talat Kishmala settled for a bronze after giving a tough fight to Esha.

This is the first major senior individual medal for Palak in an international competition after she gave notice of her precocious talent just last year. She shot 242.1 in the finals for a Games record.

Esha, who had won the individual silver in 25m pistol on Wednesday and was part of the trio that won the 10m air pistol team silver along with Palak and Divya TS earlier on Friday, settled for silver, scoring 239.7. It marked the first time that two Indian shooters have finished one-two on the podium at the Asian Games.

SUCCESS IN 50M RIFLE ARENA

The unprecedented success of Indian marksmen continued in the 50m rifle arena as well with the men’s 3-positions team, comprising the young trio of Aishwary (591), Swapnil (591) and Sheoran (587), overcoming the Chinese challenge with a world record score of 1769 to grab the top podium finish.

Hosts China were a clear six points adrift with 1763 points, while South Korea were a distant third with 1748 points.

The men’s trio smashed the world record by a whopping eight points.

Aishwary and Swapnil shot superbly to make the individual finals as well. They were placed first and second after the qualification round, something never seen before in a sport dominated by the Chinese at the Asian level.

The third Indian in the competition, Akhil, despite finishing fifth with 587 in qualification, missed out on the eight-team finals as only two shooters per country are allowed in the individual medal round.

Swapnil, a strong medal prospects at next year’s Paris Olympic Games, was firing on all cylinders, shooting down the qualification Asian and Asian Games record on way to a superb 591.

Not to be left behind, Aishwary too shot an identical score to be tied with Swapnil but entered the finals, and was placed second because of fewer shots closer to the bulls eye (inner-10s). Swapnil had 33 inner 10s, while Aishwary had 27.

The two Chinese who made it to the finals — Du Linshu and Tian Jiaming — were placed third and fourth respectively behind the two young Indians.

Both Swapnil and Aishwary shot an average of 9.850 out of a maximum score of 10 on each of the shots in the qualification round in all three positions — kneeling, prone and standing, an incredible achievement, considering the pressure from the relentless Chinese.

In fact, Swapnil had a 199/200 in prone, while Aishwary had an identical score in kneeling position.

AISHWARY MISSES INDIVIDUAL GOLD

The finals though was a bit of an anti-climax, with both Swapnil and Aishwary missing the gold medal.

Aishwary signed off with a silver after China’s Du Linshu created an Asian Games record score of 460.6 to deny the 22-year-old Indian the top podium spot.

Aishwary had a final score of 459.7, while home team marksman Tain Jiaming took the third place behind the Indian with a score of 448.3.

The biggest setback, though, was for veteran Indian marksman Swapnil, who was gunning for a sure-shot gold after leading for a major part of the finals, but a rank poor shot of 7.6 saw the 28-year-old take a mighty tumble from No.1 position to fifth in the standing position.

That virtually eliminated him from medal contention. Though he shot 10.5 and 10.1 in his last two shots, Swapnil could only manage a fourth-place finish.

Aishwary will return to India as the most successful shooter having won the 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions team gold medals, besides individual bronze in 10m air rifle and a silver in 50m rifle on Friday.

ESHA LEADS FROM THE FRONT

Teenager Esha led from the front as she guided the Indian women’s 10m air pistol team to a silver medal.

The trio of 18-year-old Esha (579), Palak (577) and Divya TS (575) aggregated 1731 points for their silver medal, while China took the gold with a total of 1736, which is an Asian Games record.

Chinese Taipei finished with a bronze, totalling 1723.

The scores in the qualification round decide the team medallists, while eight top-scoring shooters move into the finals to win individual glory.

Esha had also claimed a silver medal in the women’s individual 25m pistol event on Wednesday, while the trio of Manu Bhaker, Esha and Rhythm Sangwan had fired in tandem to shoot the gold medal in the women’s 25m pistol team event on the same day.

London:

A teenager will appear in a London court on Friday charged with the murder of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in a case that has once again shone the spotlight on UK knife crime.

Elianne Andam was stabbed to death in Croydon, south London, as she went to school on Wednesday.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested shortly afterwards.

He is due to appear at youth court, sitting at Croydon Magistrates’ Court, later Friday charged with murder and possession of a knife, police said in a statement.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to the scene at around 8:30 am (0730 GMT) following reports of a stabbing.

Paramedics battled to save the girl but she was pronounced dead at the scene 50 minutes later.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “heartbroken” by the fatal incident and pledged to “continue working day and night to end the scourge of knife crime in our city”.

According to official figures, 99 people under the age of 25 were killed in England and Wales with a knife or sharp object in the year to March 2023. Of those 13 were under the age of 16.

The deaths were among 50,000 stabbing incidents in the year to March 2023, a five percent increase on the previous year and a 75 percent increase on a decade ago, the figures from the Office for National Statistics showed.

Andam was a pupil at Old Palace of John Whitgift School, a private girls’ school in Croydon.

“We are deeply shocked by the senseless and tragic death of our much-loved and valued friend and pupil,” the school said in a statement.

“It will take some time for the Old Palace community to come to terms with this terrible news.”

Chandigarh:

Punjab Congress leaders Partap Singh Bajwa and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday claimed they were not allowed to meet arrested party MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in Fazilka.

Mr Khaira was arrested here on Thursday by the Punjab Police in connection with a 2015 drug trafficking case. After his arrest, the MLA from Bholath was produced in a court in Fazilka’s Jalalabad and remanded in police custody for two days.  On Friday, Mr Bajwa, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the state, Mr Warring, and other senior leaders went to meet Mr Khaira, who is under the custody of Punjab Police in Fazilka.

“We wanted to meet our colleague and assure him that his party and we all stand behind him. But the police did not permit us to meet him,” Mr Bajwa told reporters in Fazilka.

“I am Leader of Opposition, my elected MLA has been arrested. We wanted to meet him in police presence. It was a courtesy call, but permission was denied,” he said.

Partap Singh Bajwa also lashed out at the Bhagwant Mann dispensation, accusing it of indulging in vendetta politics.

A Punjab Congress delegation had on Thursday met Governor Banwarilal Purohit, complaining about the alleged fake case.

Mr Khaira’s arrest came amid talks of seat sharing between the members of the opposition INDIA bloc.

The Punjab Congress has already opposed any alliance with the ruling AAP in the state for the general elections.
