This Company's CEO Agrees To Work On Zero Salary. Here's Why

Ryan Cohen, President and Chief Executive Office of GameStop.

American video game and gaming merchandise retailer GameStop recently announced Ryan Cohen as President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. The company said in a release that he would not receive any compensation.

In his first email as the CEO titled “Survival”, Mr Cohen told the employees that he would ensure the struggling video game retailer survives.”Our job is to make sure GameStop is here for decades to come,” he wrote in the email obtained by CNBC. “Extreme frugality is required. Every expense at the company must be scrutinized under a microscope and all waste eliminated. The company has no use for delegators and money wasters. I expect everyone to treat company money like their own and lead by example,” he added.

“Prospering in retail means survival. If we survive, we stay in the game. Survival is avoiding the deadly sins that often lead retailers to self-destruct. This is usually a result of the following – buying bad inventory, using leverage, and running expenses too high. By avoiding these self-inflicted mistakes and focusing on the basics, GameStop can be here for a long time. I expect everyone to roll up their sleeves and work hard. I’m not getting paid, so I’m either going down with the ship or turning the company around. I much prefer the latter,” he concluded.

According to the outlet, the new CEO of the company was previously the executive chair of GameStop. His company, RC Ventures was the company’s largest shareholder with a 12.09 per cent stake as of late June.

Mr Cohen replaces former Amazon executive Matt Furlong as GameStop’s third CEO in the past two years. Since the middle of the 2010s, when internet gaming and sales of video games began to outpace brick-and-mortar video game stores, GameStop has been experiencing difficulties and investors have put their hopes for a turnaround on Mr Cohen’s plan, according to Forbes

He expressed condolences to the government and people of Pakistan, especially the survivors of the terrorist attack and wished the injured good health and speedy recovery.

The spokesman considered the terrorist act carried out against the gathering to celebrate the holy prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary as clearly showing the terrorists’ distance from the merciful teachings of the Prophet of Islam.

"AAP Committed To INDIA": Arvind Kejriwal Amid Row With Congress In Punjab

'AAP Committed To INDIA': Arvind Kejriwal Amid Row With Congress In Punjab

New Delhi:
The AAP is “fully committed to the INDIA” opposition bloc, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Friday, even as leaders from his party and the Congress are locked in a bitter row in Punjab over the arrest of MLA Sukhpal Khaira on drugs charges.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Arvind Kejriwal – who this month played down talk of infighting in INDIA – sought once again to calm troubled waters. “AAP is committed to INDIA… AAP will not separate from INDIA alliance,” he told reporters.

  2. However, he also said his party remains committed to the war on drugs. “I have come to know Punjab Police arrested some Congress leader yesterday. I do not have details… you can get from the police. We have waged a war against drugs… I will not comment on any individual case but we are committed to ending addiction.”

  3. Mr Khaira’s arrest over a 2015 drugs case has spawned a rapidly escalating AAP vs Congress fight. Both are part of the INDIA bloc that hopes to work together to defeat the BJP in this year’s state and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. For the latter they were to hold talks to divide Punjab’s 13 seats, as well as seven in Delhi and 26 in Gujarat.

  4. Earlier today, sources said Punjab Congress leaders told their high command the AAP is “targeting” senior figures, and cited the arrests of ex-ministers Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, and ex-Deputy Chief Minister OP Soni. All three were arrested before Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who is now in police custody.

  5. Amarinder Raja Warring, the Congress’ Punjab chief, claimed he was stopped from meeting Mr Khaira. He attacked both Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the police, and said Governor Banwari Lal Purohit had been briefed about the “false case” against Mr Khaira. “We can’t be silent. We will fight till the end…” he declared.

  6. In his first comments on the row, Congress national boss Mallikarjun Kharge said “if anyone does injustice to us, then we are not the ones who will tolerate it”. “I will take its details… but whatever may be the case, if someone does injustice, they don’t survive for long,” he said.

  7. The AAP has dismissed claims of a “political vendetta” and has insisted that Sukhpal Khaira’s arrest is part of its “zero tolerance policy” against drugs. An AAP Punjab spokesperson said “sufficient admissible evidence” had been found. He blamed the earlier Shiromani Akali Dal government for not arresting Mr Khaira at the time.

  8. As part of INDIA’s plans, the AAP and Congress were to divide seats in three states – Punjab and Delhi (where the AAP is in power) and BJP-ruled Gujarat, which total to 46 seats. However, regional rivalries, at least in the former, spurred by tension over Mr Khaira’s arrest, have left any deal on the brink.

  9. Mr Khaira’s arrest was significant as he has been particularly vociferous in protests against any deal with the AAP in the state. He is also Chairman (at national level) of the Congress’ Kisan Cell and is therefore both a party office-bearer and lawmaker.

  10. And it isn’t just the Congress’ state leaders refusing to play ball; Minister Anmol Gagan Mann has claimed “directions” from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to insist the AAP will contest all 13 seats. The AAP defeated the Congress in last year’s Punjab Assembly election – 92 seats to 18, a surprising and dominant win.

Mumbai: The rupee appreciated 14 paise to settle at 83.05 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, boosted by a firm trend in equity markets and a sharp correction in the greenback against major rivals overseas.

However, selling pressure from foreign equity investors and rising crude oil prices in international markets weighed on the domestic unit, forex traders said.

The rupee opened strong at 83.13 against the US dollar and moved in the range of 83.03 to 83.13 against the greenback. It finally settled at 83.05 (provisional), registering a gain of 14 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee settled 3 paise higher at 83.19.

Analysts said the rupee also strengthened due to a significant decline in India‘s current account deficit (CAD). However, rising interest rates and US bond yields prompted foreign investors to stay in selling mode.

CAD almost halved to USD 9.2 billion, or 1.1 per cent, of GDP in the first quarter of the current fiscal from USD 17.9 billion (2.1 per cent of GDP) a year ago, the Reserve Bank of India said on Thursday.

Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said: “Indian rupee strengthened on Friday on weak US dollar index and a decline in crude oil prices. Positive tone in domestic markets also strengthened the rupee. However, FII outflows capped sharp gains”.

The dollar declined on concerns over looming US government shutdown fears. Disappointing economic data from the US also weighed on the greenback, he added.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a slight positive bias on as US government shutdown worries may keep the dollar pressure. Recovery in global markets may also support the local currency.

“However, expectations of recovery in crude oil prices and selling pressure from foreign investors may weigh on the rupee,” Choudhary said, adding “Traders may also take cues from India’s fiscal deficit data. USD/INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 82.70 to Rs 83.40”.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, declined by 0.52 per cent to 105.68.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.36 per cent higher at USD 95.72 per barrel.

On the domestic equity front, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 320.09 points or 0.49 per cent to settle at 65,828.41. The broader Nifty climbed 114.75 points or 0.59 per cent to end at 19,638.30.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,364.22 crore, according to exchange data.

Photos Of Emergency Alert On iPhones Go Viral. Here's What It Is

Photos Of Emergency Alert On iPhones Go Viral. Here's What It Is

Some iPhone users have said they haven’t received any such alert message.

Days after Android users received an emergency test alert from the government, those who use Apple’s iPhones also claimed that they have started receiving the same message. It appears as a flash on your lockscreen and contains a generic test to inform the users that this is a test message. Some of them have posted screenshots of their lockscreen on X (formerly Twitter) and the photos have started gaining traction on the internet. However, other iPhone users have said they haven’t received any such alert message.

The message contains the following text:  “Emergency Alert This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent using Cell Broadcast by Deptt of Telecom, Govt of India to TEST Emergency Alert System of NDMA. No action is required at your end. 29/09/2023 12:59 PM.” According to the screenshots, the message was sent by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at 12:59 pm today. The government is working on these alerts in order to be better prepared for disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and flash floods.

Some users posted about the same on X. “A very great initiative by @ndmaindia and @DoT_India @TRAI for utilising mobile features during emergency. Today received test alert via cell broadcast on my iPhone and Apple Watch. Good job  #emergencyalert,” said a user.

Another person added, “Emergency alert: extreme in India At same time , My all Family members got one alert message on mobile phone What is this ? …..”

This was much awaited on iOS, especially after Android users shared photos of the alert on their phones twice – in August and earlier this month. The process to set up the alert is fairly easy ont he iPhone. According to Apple’s official website, users need to go to Notifications under Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the screen. Under Government Alerts, turn the type of alert on or off.

However, this option is not available on the models being used in India, even after latest software update. On September 15, Apple Support replied to NDTV’s query on the same saying, “If you do not see the option as outlined in the article above, it is likely not available for your country or region at this time.” But latest development indicates the feature is soon going to arrive on all the iPhones.

Interestingly, several Android phones have received such an alert a couple of times in the past. Users stated that they heard a very loud beep on their phones with an ’emergency alert: severe’ flash.

Sources at the National Disaster Management Authority told NDTV in August this year that they plan to roll out the alert system soon. “The government is planning to roll out the alert system in the next six to eight months. The second phase of the Common Alerting Protocol was tested today. In the coming months, the government plans to carry out test runs for broadcasting urgent disaster alert messages on TV, Radio and at Railway Stations,” sources in NDMA told NDTV.

The NDMA plans to expand the warning system to television, radio and other mediums to ensure citizens are promptly informed and better prepared for severe weather.

New Delhi: The Law Commission has recommended rolling out registration of e-FIRs in a phased manner beginning with offences bearing up to three years jail term.

In a report submitted to the government earlier this week and made public on Friday, the law panel proposed setting up a centralised national portal to facilitate registration of e-FIRs.

It said e-FIRs will tackle long persisting issue of delay in the registration of FIRs and allow citizens to report crimes in real time.

In his letter to Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Law Commission Chairman Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said, “Due to the march of technology, means of communication have progressed in leaps and bounds. In such a landscape, clinging on to an archaic system of registering FIRs does not augur well for criminal reforms.”

Climbing five flights of stairs lowers heart disease risk by 20%, according to research

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) along with coronary artery disease and stroke are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Climbing five flights of stairs lowers heart disease risk by 20%, according to research

Washington DC: Forget about walking 10,000 steps per day. According to a new Tulane University study, taking at least 50 steps and climbing stairs each day could greatly reduce your risk of heart disease.

The study, published in Atherosclerosis, found that climbing more than five flights of stairs daily could reduce risk of cardiovascular disease by 20%.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) along with coronary artery disease and stroke are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

“Short bursts of high-intensity stair climbing are a time-efficient way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and lipid profile, especially among those unable to achieve the current physical activity recommendations,” said co-corresponding author Dr. Lu Qi, HCA Regents Distinguished Chair and professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. “These findings highlight the potential advantages of stair climbing as a primary preventive measure for ASCVD in the general population.”

Using UK Biobank data collected from 450,000 adults, the study calculated participants’ susceptibility to cardiovascular disease based on family history, established risk factors and genetic risk factors and surveyed participants about their lifestyle habits and frequency of stair climbing. Median follow-up time was 12.5 years.

The study found that climbing more stairs daily especially reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in those who were less susceptible. However, Qi said the increased risk of heart disease in more susceptible people could be “effectively offset” by daily stair climbing.

Qi touted the public availability of stairs as a low-cost, accessible way to incorporate exercise into daily routines.

“This study provides novel evidence for the protective effects of stair climbing on the risk of ASCVD, particularly for individuals with multiple ASCVD risk factors,” Qi said.
