Cauvery row: CWMA directs Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs water every day to TN till Oct 15

The meeting of Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) upheld the decision of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), and directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day, until October 15.

Bengaluru: The meeting of Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on Thursday upheld the decision of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), and directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day, until October 15.

The 25th meeting of CWMA was held on Thursday at its headquarters in the national capital to review its Tuesday order, which directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day to the neighbouring state from 28 September to 15 October.

Taking note of it, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that he will hold a meeting with retired Supreme Court Judges today on the matter.

“There was a meeting of the Cauvery Management Authority today. We have submitted all our facts. I will hold a meeting with retired Supreme Court Judges today. I will talk with our legal team if we can question this in the Supreme Court. We will decide what to do after talking to them. Let us see what happens next,” Siddaramaiah said in a press briefing here.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Tejaswi Surya on Wednesday blamed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government for failure in handling the Cauvery water dispute and said that the state should stop releasing water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Surya, who represents the Bangalore South constituency, made the remarks during a protest at Vidhana Soudha, alongside other BJP leaders, over the ongoing Cauvery River water conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

“Karnataka government has completely failed in putting forth proper details to the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) committee. Showing fingers towards the central govt is not going to work. Central official work has been done. Now it is in the hands of authorities and the Supreme Court,” the BJP leader said.

Farmers across Karnataka have been protesting since the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) ordered the state to release 5000 cusecs of water to its neighbouring state Tamil Nadu, for 15 days, effective from September 13.

The Supreme Court bench refused to interfere with the order of Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to Karnataka on releasing 5,000 cusecs of water every day for now to Tamil Nadu.

Trump Co-Defendant In Georgia Election Conspiracy Trial Pleads Guilty

Trump Co-Defendant In Georgia Election Conspiracy Trial Pleads Guilty

Former President Trump also faces federal charges for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Washington:

A co-defendant of Donald Trump pleaded guilty Friday in a case alleging a  criminal conspiracy to overturn the former US president’s 2020 election loss in the state of Georgia.

Scott Hall, 59, was indicted in August along with Trump and 17 others by a Fulton County grand jury.

Hall, a bail bondsman, is the first defendant charged in the sprawling racketeering case to plead guilty.

He originally faced seven felony charges including racketeering, conspiracy to commit computer fraud and conspiracy to defraud the state.

He pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to interfere with the performance of election duties at a live-streamed hearing on Friday before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.

Hall was sentenced to five years of probation, a $5,000 fine and 200 hours of community service.

He also agreed to write a letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia and to testify at the upcoming trials of other co-defendants in the case.

Hall and several other co-defendants were charged with tampering with voting machines in Coffee County, Georgia, following the 2020 election won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the other co-defendants in the case have pleaded not guilty to charges of involvement in a criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, where Biden won by some 12,000 votes.

The twice-impeached former president also faces federal charges for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and is to go on trial in that case in Washington in March 2024.

Sehwag Picks India's No.4 Batter Between Suryakumar And Iyer For World Cup

Team India had a fruitful dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup 2023 as they not only faced Australia in a three-match ODI series but also emerged as the winners. The Rohit Sharma-led side, who will be opening its World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8, registered a 2-1 win over them in the ODI series. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and especially Suryakumar Yadav played fiery knocks and contributed in the team’s victory. Apart from them, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin also delivered terrific spells.

However, the series win has also put the team management into a dilemma as they now have plenty of options for the number four spot. Iyer smashed a century in the second ODI but things got complicated as Suryakumar also played a crucial knock of 72 off 37 balls in the same match.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag backed Iyer and stated that the 28-year-old batter has proved himself and deserves the number four spot in the team. He further said that Surya needs to play some more innings to win the trust of the management.

“To adjust someone at no 6, why do you want to change the no 4 which is the most important position? Shreyas Iyer has just scored a century and he’s someone who can stabilise an innings if you lose wickets against the new ball and score big. So don’t disturb that,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t played an innings like that in ODIs because all his runs have usually come in the last 15 overs. It’s like T20, no doubt it’s important but KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan can do the same job. So, in my view, Shreyas Iyer is quite fit for the no 4 slot. Suryakumar Yadav will have to wait. He will have to prove to selectors and management that he’s capable of scoring hundred,” he added.

The ODI World Cup 2023 will kick-start from October 5 with England taking on New Zealand in the opening match in Ahmedabad. Team India will play their first match against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

Not for releasing water to Tamil Nadu, decision to be taken after meeting with experts: Siddaramaiah

Not for releasing water to Tamil Nadu, decision to be taken after meeting with experts: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday told a delegation of farmers, Dalits, labourers, and Kannada activists that the government feels that Cauvery water should not be released to Tamil Nadu and a decision would be taken after the meeting with the expert team.

He met the delegation of activists led by State Sugarcane Growers President Kuruburu Shanthakumar and Karnataka AAP President Mukhyamantri Chandru regarding the Cauvery dispute at his home office ‘Krishna’.

Two committees will review the situation and issue orders regarding Cauvery water distribution, he said, Noting that the order was to release water from the Biligundlu reservoir, he said that under normal circumstances, there is a mandate to release 177.25 tmc of water in a year.

“Our state needs 284.85 tmc of water. No distress formula has been formulated in the Supreme Court,” the CM said, adding that the tribunal itself has decided to have 2 committees.

“We have been protesting every time a meeting was called. This year there was a problem due to no rain in August. Even this month, there is hardly any rain. Tamil Nadu will receive rain in the month of September. So far 43 tmc of water has gone. It has been ordered that 123 tmc of water should be released. But we have not released the water.”

“We have been protesting every time the Cauvery Authority called a meeting. We said that there is no water. We had filed an application before the Supreme Court. We need 70 tmc water for irrigation to sustain the crop, 30 tmc is required for drinking water, and industries require 3 tmc of water.

The state has a total requirement of 106 tmc. But we have only 50 tmc of water. Our first priority is drinking water,” he said. A meeting with retired Supreme Court judges, irrigation experts and former Advocates General has been called to discuss the next steps. “We think that water should not be released.”

However, he said that if the water is not released, the reservoirs can be seized by the central government, contempt of court will be committed and the government can be dismissed. Shanthakumar said that the people of Karnataka are being worried by orders. He insisted that the government should take a decision in favour of the farmers. It was also requested to withdraw cases against those of the organisations who fight for the people.

He demanded that the Mekedatu project should be given quick consideration. Chandru said that the public voluntarily took part in the strike and termed the authority’s judgment “unscientific”.

“It should be clear as to where is the failure. Our claim should be done as vigorously as Tamil Nadu. It is wrong to suggest to release water even if there is no solution to the problem,” he said, adding that drinking water should be given priority and Tamil Nadu is asking for water for crops. He also appealed to call the Legislature immediately and take appropriate decision in this regard. The Chief Minister said that the decision will be taken after discussing all the demands in the meeting with the team of experts.

Putin Says Convicts Killed In Ukraine War Fully Redeemed Themselves

Putin Says Convicts Killed In Ukraine War Fully Redeemed Themselves

Moscow:

President Vladimir Putin on Friday said that Russian prisoners who died in Ukraine had redeemed themselves in the eyes of society.

To boost regular troops fighting in Ukraine, the army and mercenary group Wagner have extensively recruited from Russian penal colonies.

“They are dead,” President Putin said during a televised meeting, referring to prisoners who died in Ukraine.

“Everyone can make some mistakes, they once did. But they gave their lives for the Motherland, and fully redeemed themselves,” Vladimir Putin said at the meeting with servicemen who fought near Ukraine’s Urozhaine on the southern front.

After a short discussion with the soldiers, President Putin observed a minute of silence to honour the prisoners who died in combat.

The Russian leader said that soldiers who fought near Urozhaine — where the defence ministry said a Ukrainian attack was repelled — were “an emblematic example of courage and heroism”.

Convicts have reportedly been used as cannon fodder including in the eastern Ukrainian hotspot city of Bakhmut.

International experts have said that in some cases prisoners were recruited to fight in Ukraine through threats or intimidation.

Many experts and Kremlin critics say that rehabilitating and reintegrating traumatised ex-soldiers is a major challenge for Russia.

Some of the former prisoners returning from the front commit new crimes.

Russian authorities have traditionally praised patriotism and a culture of self-sacrifice, including by commemorating the Soviet victory in the Second World War.

Sanjay Raut's Aide Played Key Role In Covid Centre Scam: Probe Agency

Sanjay Raut's Aide Played Key Role In Mumbai Covid Centre Scam: Probe Agency

Mr Patkar managed to gather prior information about the tender proces, probe agency ED said.

Mumbai:

Businessman Sujit Patkar, reportedly a close aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut, played a “key role” in the allotment of a civic contract to his partnership firm for running jumbo COVID-19 centres in Mumbai, the Enforcement Directorate said in its chargesheet.

As per the ED, Mr Patkar managed to gather prior information about the tender process for these centres due to his “proximity with politically exposed person” and of the total proceeds of crime of Rs 32.44 crore, an amount of Rs 2.81 crore was diverted into his personal bank account.

Besides Mr Patkar, the other accused named in the chargesheet include the firm Lifeline Hospital Management Services, its three partners and Dahisar jumbo Covid Centre dean Dr Kishore Bisure.

Mr Patkar and Mr Bisure were arrested under Prevention of Money Laundering Act provisions by the ED and are currently in judicial custody.

As per the ED chargesheet, Mr Patkar, one of the major partners of Lifeline Hospital Management Services with 30 per cent share, invested only Rs 12,500 at the time of incorporation of the firm.

Mr Patkar indulged himself in criminal activities and hatched a conspiracy in connivance with other accused partners and officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and managed to obtain a tender/contract, the chargesheet said.

He managed to gather prior information about the tender process due to his proximity with “politically exposed person” and then he as well as his partners set up the firm to obtain the tender issued by civic authorities, the chargesheet stated.

“Patkar used to liaison with BMC officials and played a key role in the process of allotment of contract of manpower supply to Jumbo Covid facility at Dahisar and Worli to Lifeline Management Services,” it stated.

The ED’s chargesheet further said the accused partners, for undue personal financial gains, made a plan to under deploy medical staff in Dahisar and Worli Jumbo Covid facilities.

In pursuance of their plan, they gave instructions to their staff members deployed at the aforesaid Jumbo Covid Centres to create forged attendance records in line with the EOI (expression of interest) issued by the civic body.

As per the plan, there was huge under-deployment of medical staff, which had put the lives of the COVID-19 patients at risk, the chargesheet said.

It claimed the accused had submitted fake and fabricated attendance sheets and related records for Dahisar Jumbo Covid facility, whereas, with regard to the Worli centre, invoices were submitted to the civic body without any attendance data and staff records.

Mr Patkar, in connivance with other partners, intentionally did not reveal the cancellation of contract by Pune Municipal Region Development Authority, which had specified the firm’s lacunas and had also issued advisory not to give any further works to Lifeline Hospital Management Services in view of larger public interest, the ED chargesheet pointed out.

Obtaining payments to the tune of Rs 32.44 crore from the civic body as part of this contract created proceeds of crime, it said.

Of this PoC, an amount of Rs 2.81 crore was diverted in the personal bank account of Patkar between November 2020 and October 2022, the chargesheet further said.

This amount was mostly utilized in repayment of his personal (property and vehicle) loans and other expenses by projecting them as untainted funds, the chargesheet added.

Minister Slams Ashok Gehlot For Objecting To Vice President's Rajasthan Visit

Minister Slams Ashok Gehlot For Objecting To Vice President's Rajasthan Visit

Kota:

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Friday said Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s objection to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s “frequent” visits to Rajasthan reflects he is not interested in the state’s development.

Noting that Vice President Dhankhar is the “son of Rajasthan” and a farmer, Mr Muraleedharan said the visits by the President and Vice President will benefit any state and there is no politics in it.

“I am surprised why the chief minister here is objecting to such issue. It reflects that the chief minister is not interested in development and progress of the state,” Mr Muraleedharan told the media on the sidelines of inauguration of Rajasthan’s second and country’s 37th regional passport office in Kota.

Mr Gehlot should welcome the vice president warmly, instead of objecting to his frequent visits, he added.

The senior Congress leader had said in a rally on Thursday, “Yesterday, the Vice President came and visited five districts. What is the logic? Elections are to be held soon… if you come during this, it will have different meanings and messages, which will not be good for democracy”.

On the allegation of avoiding the Manipur violence issue, Mr Muraleedharan said no one in the party and in government avoided the issue and added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in detail about the government’s policy and its efforts on the subject in the parliament and outside.

Home Minister Amit Shah himself visited Imphal and spoke to the people there, he further said.

Mr Muraleedharan also condemned leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc for their alleged silence on “disgraceful remarks” on Sanatan Dharma.

The opening of the new regional passport office would benefit people from around 15 districts including Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Baran, Swai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, Udaipur, Pratapgarh, Dungerpur, Banswara, Rajsamand and newly formed district Shahapura, Ganjapur and Salumbar.

The Union minister said there were only 77 passport centres in the county in 2014, but now the number has gone up to 500 in nine years. The Narendra Modi-led government is committed to enabling every countryman to avail passport services easily, he added.

Kota MP and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla joined the inauguration ceremony virtually, while MP from Tonk-Sawai Madhopur Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria, MLA Sandeep Sharma, Madan Dilawar, Kalpna Devi, Chandrakanta Meghwal and Ashok Dogra were present on the occasion with MoS Muraleedharan.
