"Doors Not Closed, But Need Something To Look At": India On Canada's Charges

India had earlier rejected Justin Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

Washington:
India and the US have discussed the killing of a Khalistani terrorist that is at the core of the Indo-Canada diplomatic crisis. Foreign minister S Jaishankar told his US counterpart Antony Blinken that Canada harbours extremist elements.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Mr Jaishankar said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegation – that “Indian government agents” were involved in Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing – was not consistent with India’s policy. India had earlier rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

  2. Canada has a “permissive attitude towards terrorists, extremists, and people who openly advocate violence”, said the foreign minister, responding to a question during a discussion at Hudson Institute in Washington. “They have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics,” he said.

  3. Trudeau has offered no evidence to support his allegation against India, but reports said this was a shared information among an intelligence alliance also including US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Rejecting the charge, India has accused Canada of providing safe haven to terrorists.

  4. Blinken said the US is concerned over the Canadian PM’s allegations and they have been in close contact with the country. “We have engaged with the Indian Government and urged them to work with Canada on investigation,” he said, adding that those responsible need to be held accountable.

  5. For India, Canada has been a country where “organised crime from India mixed with trafficking in people, secessionism, violence, terrorism,” said Mr Jaishankar in his latest criticism. “It’s a very toxic combination of issues and people who have found operating space there.” He also underlined that Indian diplomats are unsafe in that country.

  6. Mr Jaishakar reiterated that India is open to taking a look if Canada has something specific. He said the doors for looking at something are not shut, but there must be something to be looked at. “If there is a requirement for us to look at something, we are open to looking at it. But, I then expect somewhere, some pointer, something for me to look at,” he said.

  7. This is not the first time Mr Jaishankar has criticised Canada for providing shelter to extremist forces, Indian diplomats facing threats and Indian consulates being attacked. India has been sending information across about organised crime leadership operating in Canada and there were a large number of extradition requests, he had said.

  8. On Thursday, Trudeau pitched for building closer ties with India stating that the country is a growing economic power and an important geopolitical player. “As we presented with our Indo-Pacific strategy, just last year, we’re very serious about building closer ties with India,” he said.

  9. Tensions had been brewing between the two countries since Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded Trudeau over rising secessionist activities in Canada, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of G20 summit in Delhi. In 2018, India had reportedly handed him a list of nine Khalistani operatives.

  10. The tension deepened after Trudeau alleged an Indian role in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India who had moved to Canada and taken up their citizenship. India reacted sharply and the two countries expelled one diplomat of the country each to trigger a bigger crisis.

Israel's N-facilities should be subject to IAEA safeguards

The demand was put forward by the Chairman of Qatar’s National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons, Abdulaziz Salmeen al-Jabri at the annual general conference of the IAEA, which is currently underway in Vienna, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported on Friday.

Jabri further called for Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The Qatari official explained that these were legitimate demands that had been confirmed by “international legitimacy resolutions [that were passed] half a century ago,” the QNA report noted.

He named some of those resolutions as “resolutions of the UN General Assembly [that have been passed] since 1974, [United Nations] Security Council Resolutions 487 of 1981 and 687 of 1991, numerous IAEA resolutions, and the resolution of the Review Conference of the Middle East Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1995.”

The official reminded that Israel’s subjecting all of its nuclear facilities to the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards regime and its accession to the NPT “is a prerequisite for establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.”

He “stressed that confronting nuclear proliferation in the Middle East is at the core of the tasks assigned to the IAEA…”

The Israeli regime, which pursues a policy of deliberate ambiguity about its nuclear weapons, is estimated to harbor 200 to 400 nuclear warheads in its arsenal, making it the sole possessor of non-conventional arms in West Asia.

The regime has, nevertheless, refused to either allow inspections of its military nuclear facilities or sign the NPT.

Hyderabad FC starts ISL 2023-24 against East Bengal at Salt Lake stadium

Kolkata: Hyderabad FC will kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 campaign by locking horns with East Bengal FC in the latter’s backyard at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.

In their first encounter, the Red and Gold Brigade, under their new head coach Carles Cuadrat, played out an engaging but eventually goalless draw against Jamshedpur FC at this very venue on Monday.

*What’s at stake?

East Bengal FC

Carles Cuadrat has certainly imprinted his philosophy pretty impressively in the East Bengal FC setup, which was evident from the swift and sustained phases of attacks that they brought about in the last game. The key now is in capitalising on those opportunities as dropping points early on can be costly for their prospects later on in the campaign.

Hyderabad FC

Hyderabad FC finished second on the points tally last year with 13 wins and just four losses from its 20 league games. So, the team will be carrying the expectation of opening their campaign with a win this time around as well. Amidst all the expectations and consistency over the past two seasons, they go into the season with a new head coach – Thangboi Singto.

Key Players

Cleiton Silva (East Bengal FC): After failing to open their account against Jamshedpur FC, East Bengal will be aiming for goals galore against Hyderabad FC. In that regard, their Brazilian forward Cleiton Silva will play a crucial role in this match. The 37-year-old brings in a wealth of club football experience and is a proven goalscorer in the league.
Makan Winkle Chote (Hyderabad FC): Keep an eye on young winger Makan Winkle Chote. Hyderabad FC prized out the 23-year-old from their ISL rivals FC Goa on a free transfer this season. Chote was impressive for the Gaurs and will be looking for more game time at his new club.

Head-to-Head

Matches Played: 8 East Bengal FC: 0 Hyderabad FC: 4 Draws: 4

Trivia: East Bengal are yet to win a match against Hyderabad. Last season, East Bengal were leading 3-1 at half-time in a Super Cup match against Hyderabad. But they conceded two second-half goals and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.

Team Talk

“Every ISL game is a challenge. All the teams have equal opportunity to win games. As Hyderabad FC, as players and staff, we are ready. We are excited to face East Bengal FC. One of the strengths of Hyderabad FC is the togetherness and camaraderie in the group. The new players that have come in have bonded really well with the previous players. There are some senior very experienced players who have bonded well with the young players. So I think as a point whether we are fighting for points on the field or working hard off it. We will always go for top honours. We are working hard for the playoffs. From there we think of what’s next,” said Hyderabad head coach Thangboi Singto ahead of the match as quoted by an ISL press release.

“We are doing the work to win the game. The last 15 minutes of the first half against Jamshedpur FC was terrific. It is always good to see the other team in a friendly but of course, it is a friendly situation. We have to be ready for a close game. 0-0, 1-0 ,0-1, they are good in that so we have to be mentally ready for that. I am not agreeing that the conversion rate of our team is poor. The important thing is to create chances and the team is creating chances. It is a new season, new players, and new transfers but it always helps to have some bit of information about other team players. The style of football we are playing has to work,” said East Bengal FC head coach Carles Cuadrat.

Amritsar: Farmers in Amritsar, under the aegis of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, continued to sit on railway tracks as they staged a ‘Rail Roko Andolan’ (Rail Roko Agitation) on Sunday over their demands, including a Committee for MSP (Minimum Support Price), withdrawal of cases regarding agitation in Delhi, and compensation and jobs for families of farmers who died during the agitation.
The farmers sat on railway tracks, disrupting rail traffic in Punjab.

DRM Moradabad rail division Raj Kumar Singh said that several trains have been cancelled or delayed due to the protest.

The farmers protested half-nude to remind the Central government of the promises it had made to them.

The farmers said that the government had promised to implement the MSP Act, compensation for drug-related issues, and many more issues, but it had gone back on its promises.

“Today we have protested while being half nude. The reason for the clothless protest was that the Modi government had promised to implement the MSP Act, compensation issue and many more, which has not been implemented yet. Government seems to forget their promises” said a farmer.

The three-day protest called by farmers in Punjab’s Amritsar led by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee began on Thursday and will continue on Saturday.

Sarwan Singh Pandher of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, who was present at the protest said, “If anyone tries to be unfair with the farmers of Punjab, then farmers from Haryana will also join Punjab farmers. Farmers are united throughout the country.”

“The agitation has been called by 18 unions in North India. Home Minister Amit Shah came to Amritsar and he promised to bring MSP guarantee law but the committee has not been formed yet. The cases that had been registered during the Delhi agitation have not been withdrawn,” Pandher said.

Police official Balvir S Ghuman said that massive security has been deployed to deal with the situation.

Client-side encryption in Gmail now available on Android, iOS smartphones

Tech giant Google has expanded its client-side encryption in Gmail to Android and iOS mobile devices globally

Client-side encryption in Gmail now available on Android, iOS smartphones

New Delhi: Tech giant Google has expanded its client-side encryption in Gmail to Android and iOS mobile devices globally.

After rolling out client-side encryption for Gmail on the web earlier this year, now Android and iOS business users can read and write encrypted messages directly from their devices.

“This allows your users to work with your most sensitive data from anywhere on their mobile devices while adhering to compliance and regulatory requirements,” the company said in an update late on Friday.

The Gmail mobile apps support encrypted mail natively, so users don’t need to download multiple apps, or navigate to an external portal, to access their encrypted messages.

“While Workspace encrypts data at rest and in transit by using secure-by-design cryptographic libraries, client-side encryption ensures that you have sole control over encryption keys and access to your data,” the tech giant explained.

Client-side encryption ensures “sensitive data in the email body and attachments are indecipherable to Google servers” and you retain control over encryption keys and the identity service to access those keys. To add client-side encryption to any message, click the lock icon and select additional encryption, and compose your message and add attachments as normal.

This feature is available to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Education Standard customers.
