Early detection, effective treatment helped in bringing down Nipah mortality rate to 33 per cent: Kerala Health Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George has said that the effective and timely intervention of the state health system brought down the Nipah fatality rate to 33 per cent in its fourth outbreak.

She made the statement in the wake of all four Nipah-infected persons recovering from the zoonotic illness.

The government on Friday announced that a nine-year-old boy, who was among those under treatment for Nipah in Kozhikode, had recovered.

The virus strain seen in Kerala was the Bangladesh variant, which generally has a high mortality rate, George said in a Facebook post on Friday night.

This variant can cause death among 70-90 per cent of the infected people. “However, we have lost the lives of two out of the total six affected persons in Kozhikode, which means we have a relatively low death rate of 33.3 per cent,” the minister said.

The relatively early identification of patients and treatment using antiviral drugs may be the reasons for the low mortality rate, she said.

Another significance of the virus outbreak this time was that there was no transmission of the disease from anyone other than the first patient, George explained.

The effective interventions of the health department helped in preventing even a single patient from becoming infected after September 11, she further said.

Research activities would be further strengthened to completely avoid loss of human life due to Nipah infection in future, the minister added.

George said she spoke to all the four persons, who had recovered from the infection, via video call.

All of them were returning home after fighting a deadly infection successfully and completely recovering from the disease, she said.

Among them, a nine-year-old boy was on a ventilator for several days and it was a great relief that such a patient has come back to life, she added.

The minister, in the FB post, also appreciated doctors, health workers and all others who worked round the clock in Nipah prevention and treatment.

A total of six people were infected with the virus in Kozhikode, and of them two died.

The first person who died on August 30 was found to be the index case, or patient zero, from whom others caught the infection.

On Friday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also lauded the efforts of the health workers, the ministerial team including George and other local associations for working together to fight the outbreak.

The Kerala government recently withdrew containment in all zones and allied restrictions were imposed in the northern district, as no new cases of Nipah virus have been reported here since September 16.

However, the district authorities advised people to continue vigil against the viral infection, maintain social distancing and ensure the use of masks and sanitizer.

Iran urges more cooperation by neighbors to help Afghanistan, calls for preventing US re-entry

A senior Iranian official has emphasized the need to enhance cooperation in the region and to prevent the United States from re-entering Afghanistan, while criticizing Washington’s “destructive role” in the war-torn country in the past two decades.

Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, made the remarks at the Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan which was held in the Russian city of Kazan on Friday.

He went on to say that the participants agreed significantly on preventing the US from re-entering Afghanistan and holding it accountable for the damages it inflicted upon the country during 20 years of occupation.

Kazemi-Qomi further urged the neighboring countries of Afghanistan to enhance cooperation in order to help the country resolve its issues without relying on outside powers.

He also noted that the 20-year-long occupation of Afghanistan by the US and its allies and the creation of “a foreigners’ front” are not in line with Afghanistan’s national interests, stressing the need for regional initiatives and the formation of Afghanistan’s “neighbors front”.

The Iranian diplomat further praised the current caretaker government in Afghanistan in dealing with the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group and trying to improve the economic situation of the country.

He also expressed hope that the country’s caretaker government pursue the plan for implementing the neighborly policy through consultations with the neighboring nations and based on protecting Afghanistan’s interests, stating that the economic and industrial development of Afghanistan requires the “empathy and cooperation” of the country’s neighbors in a safe environment with guarantees.

Friday’s meeting was the fifth of its kind held by Russia to assess the situation in Afghanistan, with Taliban’s Caretaker Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, President Rustam Minnikhanov, as well as representatives from the Russian Federation, China, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and India in attendance.

Participants discussed a range of issues including reconciliation among Afghanistan’s various parties, the country’s reconstruction after the US-led war, fighting terrorism and guarantees for regional security, among other topics.

The United States and its allies deployed troops to Afghanistan in 2001, saying at the time the objective was to fight al-Qaeda as part of Washington’s so-called “war on terror.” The pretext had taken shape in the 9/11 attacks.

In August 2021, the Taliban recaptured several provincial capitals and seized Kabul with little-to-no resistance. The unexpected fall of the capital forced the US to carry out a hasty evacuation of diplomats, nationals, and Afghan helpers.

Washington received severe criticism for its poor handling of the evacuation. After its withdrawal, Washington imposed sanctions on Afghanistan and blocked its assets.

Foreign aid has declined dramatically since then and the country’s key central bank assets have been seized by the United States, compounding one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

"Disgraceful": India After Diplomats Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara

'Disgraceful': India After Diplomats Stopped From Entering UK Gurdwara

The statement said one of the three men tried to force open the door of the High Commissioner’s car.

New Delhi:

In a strong statement on the Indian High Commissioner and Consul General being blocked from entering a gurdwara in Scotland, India has termed the incident “disgraceful” and said that the matter has been reported to the UK government as well as the police.

A purported video going viral on social media shows a man preventing the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, from entering the gurdwara in Glasgow on Friday. Two men are also seen attempting to open the door of the High Commissioner’s car in the parking area, but are unsuccessful as the vehicle is locked. The car is then seen leaving the premises of Glasgow Gurudwara Saheb.

The incident comes amid the snowballing diplomatic row between India and Canada, which was triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accusing “Indian government agents” of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the High Commission of India in London said “extremist elements” disrupted a planned interaction organised by the Gurdwara Committee and that one of them tried to “violently force open” the door of Mr Doraiswami’s car.

“On September 29, 2023, three persons – all from areas outside Scotland – deliberately disrupted a planned interaction organized by the Gurudwara Committee for the community, the High Commissioner and the Consul General of India. This interaction was to discuss community and consular issues,” the statement said.

“The organisers included senior community leaders, ladies and Committee members, and a member of Scottish Parliament. They were threatened and abused by these elements. In an effort to prevent any potential altercation, the High Commissioner and Consul General decided to leave the premises shortly upon their arrival,” it added.

‘Bigger Incident Avoided’

The High Commission said the attempt of one of the “non-local extremist elements” to violently force open the door of the Commissioner’s car needs to be looked into by the police and pointed out that only the quick reaction of one of the organisers, who physically intervened, prevented what could have been a bigger incident.

“The High Commission of India has reported this disgraceful incident to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Metropolitan Police,” said the statement. The FCDO is akin to the ministry of external affairs.

The statement said the organisers and multiple community organisations have regretted the incident and have urged the authorities to act against the culprits.

Minister KT Rama Rao participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for Godrej’s palm oil factory at Gubbagurthy in Khammam district on Saturday.

Khammam: Telangana is all set to become a new home for Godrej group, said IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao.

He took part in the groundbreaking ceremony of an integrated palm oil factory, the first one to be set up by Godrej Agrovet in Khammam at Gubbagurthy village of Konijerla mandal in Wyra Assembly constituency on Saturday.

The State Government is giving top priority to the green revolution, white revolution (milk production), blue revolution (fisheries), pink revolution (meat) and yellow revolution (edible oil) to make the State self-reliant. Khammam will host a world class edible oil processing complex as Godrej’s plant with an investment of Rs 300 crore will support 50,000 farmers and create employment for 2,000 persons. It will be another milestone in unfolding the yellow revolution in Telangana, Rama Rao said.

Godrej has partnered with reputed global companies to establish India’s first private oil palm seed garden on the premises of the factory to develop seed varieties suitable for local climate and will establish a nursery with a capacity of five lakh saplings bringing top end plant genetics to India, he noted.

Khammam is a core area of interest for Godrej group and will be working with the government to create one-stop farmer care centres where all requirements such as fertilisers, harvest tools, plant protection solutions and extension services will be provided to farmers.

Telangana has embarked on an ambitious oil palm mission with a target to bring 20 lakh acres under cultivation. Robust infrastructure of Rythu Vedikas and agriculture extension machinery will enable Telangana to become the largest oil palm producing State in India overtaking AP in the next two years.

Telangana government is extending a subsidy of Rs 50,000 per acre to farmers for cultivating oil palm. The oil palm mission is expected to improve income for about five lakh farmers and generate employment opportunities for 2.3 lakh persons.

Godrej as a strong and reliable partner to Telangana is fostering a deep relationship by planning investments in dairy, pharma, personal care products, furniture, real estate, retail, poultry, animal feed and aquaculture. Soon after concluding discussions on the same announcements will be made shortly, added Rama Rao.

About 150 tribal leaders from BJP and Congress parties joined the BRS in the presence of Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy at his camp office here.

Speaking on the occasion, Jagadish Reddy said that the state government had converted over 4,000 thandas as grama panchayats, which was decades old dream of the tribal. It has also led to development of thandas in addition to increasing the political representation of the tribal in the local authorities. Road connectivity and basic amenities were developed in all the thandas in the state, he added. The Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was taken up special programmes for welfare of tribal and development of thandas in the state, he added.

He pointed out that tribal residential schools and colleges have been set up by the state to provide quality education to the students of the community. The state government also distributed pattas for podu lands to the eligible tribal.

Stating that the tribal stood with BRS, he pointed out that posts of sarpanches of majority of grama panchayats, which had been upgraded from the status of hamlets (thandas) were won by the BRS in the local body elections. He asked the tribal to back the BRS in the next elections for continuation of welfare schemes meant for them.

He alleged that the earlier governments of erstwhile Nalgonda district have severely neglected the welfare of tribal and considered them as vote-bank.
