Iran Armed Forces ready for full cooperation with Pakistan in anti-terror fight

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri

Iran’s highest-ranking military commander says the country’s Armed Forces are ready to improve all-out cooperation with Pakistan in the battle against terrorism.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri made the statement in a message to Pakistan’s Chief of the Army General Asim Munir on Saturday.

Baqeri condemned the “savage, anti-religious and anti-human” terrorist bombings at two mosques in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan on Friday, which killed at least 60 people and injured more than 70 others.

He expressed disappointment over the terrorist attack which killed innocent Pakistani people attending a ceremony to celebrate the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The top Iranian general expressed confidence that the perpetrators behind the crime would be identified, arrested and punished soon with the efforts of the Pakistani armed forces and the security and judicial bodies.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, from which the death toll could climb, with many people seriously injured and others having been trapped beneath the wreckage.

In a message to his Pakistani counterpart Arif Alvi on Friday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi condemned the terrorist bombings in Pakistan, saying Tehran is firmly ready to counter extremism in all its forms.

Over the recent years, Tehran and Islamabad have been working towards enhancing relations, not least bilateral economic ties and mutual efforts aimed at combating terrorism in the areas that straddle the border.

Hyderabad: Aman Raj dished out an impressive performance of two-under 68 in the final round to emerge champion with 18-under 262 to clinch the Telangana Golconda Masters at the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA) in Hyderabad on Saturday.

The golfer from Patna Aman (66-65-63-68) was the overnight leader by one shot. He took home a winning cheque for Rs 15 lakh and consolidated his second position on the TATA Steel PGTI Rankings. This is also his second title of the season. Mysuru’s Yashas Chandra (63-67-68-65) returned a 65 in the day to finish runner-up at 17-under 263.

Aman Raj began the day with a birdie on the first but then had a topsy-turvy front-nine as he sank another birdie and at the same time dropped two bogeys, one a result of landing his tee shot out of bounds on the eighth. Aman then managed to get his focus back on the back-nine with birdies on the 10th, 13th and 14th, thus re-emerging as the top contender.

After Aman’s bogey on the 16th things got a little tense for him as Yashas Chandra, just one shot behind, was breathing down the leader’s neck. However, Aman managed to close it out and pip Yashas to the post with solid pars on the last two holes which included a nervy four-feet putt for victory on the 18th.

Aman, who bagged his third career title, said, “I just wanted to play my game today and not think about anything else. I had the ideal start with a birdie on the first. But the momentum just slowed down for me thereafter. I then knew that things were not going as per my plan so I had to just hang in there.”

Yashas Chandra’s 65 featured an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys. The Mysuru-based golfer took home the runner-up prize of Rs 10 lakh that helped him climb from 30th to 10th position in the PGTI’s money list. Akshay Sharma and Sachin Baisoya shot scores of 69 on day four to take joint third place at 16-under 264.

Birhanu Yemataw Balew of Bahrain won the gold medal with a timing of 28:13.62 seconds.

Kartik’s earlier personal best time was 28:55.00s which he had clocked while winning a bronze in the National Games last year. He had won gold in the National Inter-State Championships in June with a time of 29:01.84s.

“I knew that I would win a medal but I had come with the target of breaking the national record by clocking 27:50s. But I could not. I was slow in between, the race was also slow from the beginning,” said Kartik, who hails from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The national record stands at 28:02.89s in the name of Surendra Singh since 2008.

In the 400m race final, Aishwarya Mishra finished fourth with a time of 53.50s in the women’s event while Muhammed Ajmal clocked 45.97s to end at fifth spot in the men’s competition.

In women’s 100m hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji clocked 13.03s to finish second in her heat and qualify for the final.

But it was heartbreak for the other Indian in the fray, Nithya Ramraj who finished fifth in her heat with a timing of 13.30s and failed to qualify for the final.

PM Modi to virtually flag off train service between Krishna to Kacheguda

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the New Railway line between Jaklair – Krishna to the nation and flag-off the inaugural train service from Krishna railway station to Kacheguda via video conference on Sunday, October 1.

The PM will also dedicate to the nation and lay foundation stone for several other developmental projects in important sectors like road, petroleum and natural gas and higher education worth more than Rs.13,500 crore later during the function held at Mahabubnagar district.

The new rail line between Jaklair – Krishna covering a distance of 37.48 Kilometres is a part of the Mahabubnagar – Munirabad New Line Project which is being executed by the South Central Railway (SCR).

SCR officials said commissioning of this section signifies completion of the entire portion of the project in Telangana i.e., Devarakadra – Krishna (65.825 kms). The Jaklair – Krishna new line project has been completed at a cost of nearly Rs.504.89 crore and four new station buildings i.e., Jaklair, Maganoor, Makthal and Kunsi halt are constructed apart from one existing station at Krishna.

The new line connects the hinterland areas of southern Telangana by bringing them into rail map. Further, the freight transportation will also get a big boost with increased transportation of coal, cement, clinker, mines through this route. It reduces the distance from Secunderabad and Hyderabad to Hubbali and Goa by over 100 kilometres.

Also, a new train service (DEMU) is being introduced between Kacheguda – Raichur – Kacheguda via Devarakadra – Krishna. The inaugural train service will be flagged off by the Prime Minister and will be operated from Krishna to Kacheguda.

SCR officials said the regular train will be operated between Kacheguda and Raichur connecting Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet and Raichur districts. This is the shortest route between Kacheguda and Raichur, compared to other available routes.

This train provides cheap and economical mode of transportation for the people in Mahabubnagar and Narayanpet districts towards the capital city region. The train will be immensely beneficial for students, daily commuters and labourers and fillip to handloom industry in Narayanpet.

Iran could replace SWIFT with BRICS Pay after joining bloc

The activation of an electronic banking communication system to replace SWIFT is one of the important measures taken by the BRICS group, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said in Parliment’s open session on Saturday.

Iran would be a member of BRICS from the beginning of January 2024, he said, adding that Iran has a great opportunity to work with big countries.

Saying that 30% of Iran’s transactions are done with China, Russia, India, and South Africa, he stressed the need to take advantage of this opportunity.

The “BRICS Pay” system is the exact replacement of SWIFT, and BRICS member countries and other countries can use this interbank electronic system, he clarified.

BRICS PAY is a digital payments platform that is being jointly developed by the member countries of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) economic bloc. BRICS PAY aims to enable digital payments between different countries in the BRICS PLUS format, allowing businesses and consumers to securely and seamlessly make and receive payments in their local currency.

The platform is designed to reduce the cost and complexity of international payments, while also providing a secure and reliable way to pay for goods and services.

Rishi Sunak Under Pressure Over Taxes Ahead Of 1st Tory Conference As PM

Rishi Sunak Under Pressure Over Taxes Ahead Of 1st Tory Conference As PM

London:

Rishi Sunak will be leading his first Conservative Party conference as British Prime Minister this weekend and goes into the annual event starting on Sunday amid pressure from his backbenches over cutting taxes as the governing party prepares for a general election, expected in 2024.

His predecessor, Liz Truss, who had a historically brief run at 10 Downing Street last year after her attempt at slashing taxes in a controversial mini-budget and former Indian-origin home secretary Priti Patel are among the Tory MPs openly voicing their discontent.

It came after the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank issued a forecast this week that tax levels in the UK are at their highest since records began 70 years ago.

“This unprecedentedly high tax burden is one of the reasons our economy is stagnating and why we need to cut taxes to help make Britain grow again,” tweeted Truss.

“We should always seek to reduce the tax burden, especially when there’s so much pressure on family budgets,” she said.

Patel, who was made a Dame by former prime minister Boris Johnson and collected the honour from Windsor Castle earlier this week, told ‘GB News’ that taxes must start to come down.

“The tax burden is now at a 70-year high. That is unsustainable. And the people that pay the taxes are hard-pressed Brits around the country,” said Patel in an interview on Friday.

“It’s about being Conservative and ensuring that the public keep more of the money that they earn, rather than seeing the size of the state continue to grow,” she said.

The former Cabinet minister, who was replaced by Suella Braverman as home secretary after Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister last year, also disputed the Sunak-led government’s claim that taxes cannot be cut while inflation remains high.

“You have to separate the two… I do recall a rather successful Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who was able to tackle inflation while growing the economy and speaking of economic growth,” she told the news and radio channel.

Patel also went on to condemn the “gamesmanship and shenanigans” that took place within Tory ranks and stressed it was time to be “forward facing” towards Conservative success in the next general election at a “challenging” time for the party.

“I don’t think the public will forget… we’ve seen two democratically elected leaders of the Conservative Party [Johnson and Truss] being hounded out of office. I don’t support that,” she said, dismissing her own leadership ambitions.

The internal divisions and high taxes are likely to dominate the Tory party conference, being held in Manchester from Sunday with the flagship leader’s address by Sunak on its concluding day on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old British Indian leader will be keen to present a strong front as he prepares for an election year in which the Tories are lagging behind the Opposition Labour Party in opinion polls.

Sunak has zeroed in on local issues that he believes will hold sway with the British public, such as a strong stance against Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, or LTNs, in England to ensure they are not introduced without local support.

In an interview with ‘The Sun’ on Saturday, he said he was “slamming the brakes on the war on motorists, it’s as simple as that”.

“What we want to do now is make sure that all these hare-brained schemes that are forced on local communities, whether it’s Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, blanket 20mph speed limits, all of that… need to stop,” he said.

The latest plans follow his revision of his government’s Net Zero policies, which delays the ban on new diesel and petrol cars from 2030 to 2035.

The recent policy shift is believed to have given him a small boost in the opinion polls but the Tory conference will be crucial for Sunak to not only win over the British electorate but also drown out the divisive voices within his own party.

The Flying Scotsman locomotive collided with another train in Scotland. Several people were injured

Several people were injured after the Flying Scotsman, the historic steam locomotive, was involved in a low-speed crash with another heritage train in the Scottish Highlands.

London: Several people were injured after the Flying Scotsman, the historic steam locomotive, was involved in a low-speed crash with another heritage train in the Scottish Highlands on Friday, authorities said.

The National Railway Museum said the “shunting incident” took place at Aviemore Station in the Cairngorms National Park. The station is home to a heritage train line that takes visitors on steam train trips in northern Scotland.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that emergency workers were alerted on Friday night “to reports of a collision” involving two trains at Aviemore. Police Scotland said the crash took place at “low speed”.

Two people were hospitalised as a precaution, and their injuries weren’t believed to be serious. Three others were treated at the scene and didn’t require hospital treatment.

The Belmond and Strathspey Railway said the Flying Scotsman locomotive was being coupled with stationary Royal Scotsman train carriages when the collision took place.

Police said that an investigation was underway.

The Flying Scotsman, which was restored last year as part of its centenary celebrations, was scheduled to be running trips this weekend.

The steam engine, officially given its famous name 100 years ago, was a service connecting passengers from London to Edinburgh. It rose to global fame when it recorded 100 mph (160 kph) on a test run, making it the first locomotive in the UK to reach that speed.

Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira Sent To 14-Day Jail In 2015 Drugs Case

Chandigarh:

A court in Punjab’s Fazilka district sent Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira to 14-day judicial custody on Saturday in connection with a 2015 drugs case.

Amid tight security arrangements, Sukhpal Khaira was produced in the court in Jalalabad after his two-day police remand ended on Saturday, officials said.

Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira was arrested on Thursday from his Chandigarh residence.

He was arrested by the Punjab Police following an investigation conducted by a special investigation team led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Swapan Sharma in the 2015 drugs case.

The case was registered in March 2015 at Jalalabad in Fazilka. Nine people, including Gurdev Singh, who was allegedly a close-aide of Sukhpal Khaira, were booked in the case and later convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police had recovered 2 kg of heroin, 24 gold biscuits, one country-made pistol, a .315-bore pistol and two Pakistani SIM cards from them.

Sukhpal Khaira’s cropped up later during the police probe.

However, in 2017, the Supreme Court stayed the trial court proceedings against Sukhpal Khaira who was summoned as an additional accused in the matter. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in 2021 on the charge of money laundering linked to the 2015 drugs case. He was granted bail in 2022.

In February 2023, the Supreme court quashed the summoning order against Sukhpal Khaira in the drugs case.

The Punjab Congress had called the police action against Sukhpal Khaira as political vendetta, a charge vehemently denied by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
