Manipur Suspect Arrested For 'Conspiring' With Terrorists From 2 Nations

Ethnic violence between Kuki tribes and Meiteis began on May 3; normalcy hasn’t returned yet

New Delhi:

A terror suspect in Manipur’s hill district Churachandpur has been arrested by the country’s top anti-terror agency in a transnational conspiracy case involving terrorist leaders in Bangladesh and Myanmar. The suspect is being brought to Delhi for questioning and further investigation.

The accused and his network in Myanmar and Bangladesh sought to exploit the Manipur crisis, the anti-terror agency said in a statement.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said the terror accused, Seiminlun Gangte, is instrumental in a “conspiracy with Myanmar- and Bangladesh-based leadership of terror outfits to wage war against India by exploiting the ethnic unrest in Manipur.”

Gangte is also the main accused in the car bomb blast on June 22 in Manipur’s Kwakta that killed a person, police sources told NDTV. A Scorpio SUV parked near a small bridge had exploded on June 22 in what was seen as a serious escalation of violence. The attack had the typical characteristics of trained terrorist hands, sources had said then.

The NIA has not said which terror group Gangte belongs to.

Some 25 Kuki insurgent groups, mostly based in Churachandpur, have signed a trilateral suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the centre, the state and the military, under which the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in monitored storages. There are allegations, however, that some insurgents of groups that have signed the SoO agreement have been taking part in the Manipur violence.

The NIA had filed this case on its own in July.

“Investigation… revealed that Myanmar and Bangladesh-based militant groups have entered into a conspiracy with a section of militant leaders in India to indulge in incidents of violence with an intention to drive a wedge between different ethnic groups and to wage war against the government of India,” the NIA said in the statement today.

“And for this purpose, the leadership have been providing funds to buy arms, ammunition and other types of terrorist hardware which are being sourced both, from across the border, as well as from other terrorist outfits active in northeastern states to stoke the current ethnic strife in Manipur,” the NIA said.

Gangte is the second terror suspect to be arrested in Manipur in the past nine days. On September 22, the NIA arrested Moirangthem Anand Singh in connection with a terror case.

China unveils its Moon plans

Dubbed Chang’e-6, the mission would mark Beijing’s second attempt to obtain physical samples from the Earth’s natural satellite, Russia Today reported.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) took to social media on Friday to preview mission, saying the project was going “as planned” and that the launch would take place in 2024.

“The pre-selected landing area for the Chang’e-6 mission is located in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the Moon, with a view to discovering and collecting lunar samples from different regions and ages to enhance human understanding of the moon,” the agency said.

The CNSA added that the spacecraft – named after the Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e – would carry “payloads and satellite projects from four countries,” including advanced sensors developed by France, Italy, Pakistan and the European Union’s space agency, ESA.

To facilitate contact between the Chang’e and its operators back on Earth, China’s newly developed Queqiao-2 relay communication satellite will also contribute to the mission. That project is set to be completed by the first half of 2024, the space agency said.

The Chinese spacecraft will aim to gather up to 2 kilograms of material from the lunar surface, which researchers will analyze for evidence of water ice and other compounds. China’s 2020 Chang’e-5 mission marked its first successful attempt to bring home samples from the Moon, putting Beijing among a small group of nations to do so, alongside the US and the former Soviet Union.

The latest CNSA announcement follows a string of Moon missions launched or completed by several countries in recent months, with India’s space agency making its first voyage to the surface in August. Moscow’s Luna-25 mission attempted a landing of its own around the same time, but ran into technical issues that resulted in failure. Nonetheless, Roscosmos said the landing attempt yielded valuable data for researchers, voicing hopes for “the future missions of Luna-26, 27, and 28.”

Japan, meanwhile, launched its ‘Moon sniper’ mission earlier this month, hoping to deploy a probe on the celestial body by next year and achieve a “pinpoint landing” within just 100 meters of its target site

Following Chang’e-6, China says it plans two other Chang’e missions, which will seek to send a robotic lander to the Moon’s south pole, and ultimately construct a research station in the area.

Mirabai disappointed as thigh muscle injury ends her Asian Games campaign without medal

Hangzhou: Ace Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is disappointed that she could not realise her dream of an Asian Games medal as she suffered thigh muscle injury during the women’s 49kg event here on Saturday.

The Olympic silver medallist said she felt pain while warming up before the event started and despite her coach asking her to pull out, she continued as she wanted to win a medal for the country.

“When I was warming up before the snatch section, I felt pain on my thigh, I think deep sheathing hit me. They have put ice and some spray, and will see in India what kind of treatment we will do. I am having pain now also,” Chanu said after the event, where she finished fourth.

“It is pain in the glutes and the bones on the right side of the thigh,” she added.

An Asian Games medal is the only silverware missing from the Manipuri’s decorated cabinet. Chanu had finished ninth in the 2014 edition and was forced to miss the 2018 Games due to a back injury.

“I had trained hard but I could not bring the results because of this pain. I tried my best to win a medal for the country but could not. I am feeling bad.

“I could not take part in the 2018 Asian Games. It was my dream to win a medal in the Asian Games but it is not happening. Now, my target is to do well in the Paris Olympics.” “Pain had started during snatch warm up. Sir (Vijay Sharma) asked me if I wanted to pull out because it may lead to serious injury. But I continued because I wanted to win a medal,” she added.

Chanu lifted 108kg in her first clean and jerk but increased the weight to 117kg with an eye on a medal.

“I was feeling pain but I pushed up the second attempt in clean and jerk to 117kg. If I had lifted 117kg I would have won a bronze medal.

“I passed just one lift (both in snatch, and clean and jerk). Had I done 86kg in snatch, I could have gone easier also.” She said no treatment was given in between competitions.

“It is not allowed to give treatment during competition, so we put some tapes on the thigh and did the clean and jerk.”
