An Iranian court has handed out death sentences to two men over their involvement in a deadly terrorist attack last October on the Shah Cheragh shrine in the southern city of Shiraz.
Judiciary Chief of Fars Province Kazem Moussavi said on Saturday that the two main culprits of the terrorist attack were convicted of assisting in corruption on earth, armed rebellion and acting against national security.
He said the pair were directly involved in the arming, procurement, logistics and guidance of the main perpetrator of the terrorist attack on the Shah Cheragh.
The Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
On October 26, 2022, an armed terrorist barged inside the revered holy shrine in Shiraz, killing 15 pilgrims, including women and children, and injuring dozens before he was arrested by security forces.
The terrorist was later pronounced dead at a hospital, succumbing to injuries sustained during the attack that sent shockwaves across the country.
A few suspects were immediately nabbed and some two weeks later the Intelligence Ministry announced the arrest of 26 Takfiri terrorists for involvement in the attack. The statement said the men were nationals of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and none of them are Iranians.
Moussavi further said that the two men sentenced to death have confessed that that they had been in contact with Daesh ringleaders and helped organize the attack.
The judicial official added that three other defendants in the case were also given prison sentences for five, 15 and 25 years for being members of the Daesh terrorist group and supporting it.
He noted that the verdicts against the five could be appealed before the Supreme Court.
During the latest session of a court in Shiraz on March 15, the third suspect identified as Naeim Hashem Qetali, an Afghan national, confessed to making preparations for supporting the prime attacker in Tehran and pleaded guilty to directly helping the attacker and financially supporting members of the group.
The court has accused him of aiding and abetting “corruption on earth” through financial participation and support for Daesh elements in Iran.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in a message on October 27, pledged that the perpetrators of the “outrageous” crime will definitely face punishment.
“The grief of these dears and desecration of the shrine of Ahl al Bayt will, however, not be compensated unless through tracking these disastrous acts back to where they originate from and through adopting decisive and wise measures against it,” the Leader said.
These products have been sent for testing in a lab. Once they get it positive, the women of Gonguluru village would start exporting these products to Japan.

Sangareddy: As a first step towards selling the products made by the Self Help Group (SHG) women of Gonguluru village in Pulkal Mandal, a five-member team of Suzuki Innovation Centre (SIC) of Japan had collected the products like handmade soaps and cold-pressed oils from Gongulur cottage industry.
These products have been sent for testing in a lab. Once they get it positive, the women of Gonguluru village would start exporting these products to Japan.
The SIC was set up by Japan government at the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) as part of Japan India collaboration. The SIC would work for stronger relations between India and Japan. Since Sarvodaya Grama Seva Foundation (SGSF), which had supported the Gonguluru women setting up a cottage industry called Sarvodhaya Women Entrepreneurs a year ago, had also collaborated with IIT-H, the SIC came to know about the work of Gonguluru women.
They have contacted the women expressing their interest in making a direct visit to the industry. Following it, a team of five SIC members led by the Shunsuke Aoki had visited the Gonguluru unit on Saturday.
After hours of examination of the functioning, premises, raw materials, and interaction with the SHG women, the team had collected a few products and sent them for testing. The SHG had achieved a Rs 60 lakh turnover in the first year by selling its products which were sold under Manjeera brand name. Speaking to Telangana Today, the SGSF founder Dr Sudhakar Nayak said the SHG women will certainly get good profits if the SIC approved the products for export to Japan. (eom)

New Delhi: A dramatic video of a girl being kidnapped by two – three occupants of a car from Outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri has surfaced on social media.
In the video two persons could be seen dragging a girl and pushing her into their car. The car had a Haryana number plate and was a private cab, said the police.
A passerby recorded it which later surfaced on social media.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Outer District, Harender Kumar Singh said that the video came in their notice on Saturday night and they have taken it very seriously.
He said, “Vehicle and driver have been traced. Vehicle was booked through Uber from Rohini to Vikaspuri by two boys and a girl.
“On the way they had an altercation and scuffle. The video shows the boy forcibly pushing the girl inside the car. It is after the girl wanted to move out after an altercation.
Further investigation is in progress.”
The police had formed many teams to look into the case. The cab owner was identified as a resident of Gurugram and a team was sent there.
“Strict action will be taken against all the accused,” the official said.

Sydney: An emergency operations centre has been activated in Menindee, a small town in the far west of Australia’s New South Wales (NSW), to facilitate multi-agency operations, after millions of native fish were found floating down the Darling river.
The NSW Police Force said on Sunday that the massive fish deaths are believed to be attributed to hypoxic blackwater, a naturally occurring phenomenon that causes extremely low dissolved oxygen levels, Xinhua news agency reported.
“The scale of this event has been exacerbated by recent hot weather and significantly increased number of fish in the system as floodwaters recede,” the police noted.
According to the police statement, authorities are continuing to release higher-quality water to boost dissolved oxygen levels in this area, while the emergency operations center (EOC) was established to ensure fresh and clean water supply as well as to coordinate the removal and disposal of fish.
NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree, who oversees the centre, pointed out that numerous agencies are already on the ground in the area with more on the way to conduct and support operational activities.
“Significant planning, including risk assessments, is already underway for clean-up efforts, which will include the removal of as many of the dead fish as possible, prioritising the immediate areas around Menindee, as well as other areas deemed high-risk in terms of water supply,” Greentree said.
“While this will require specialised skills and equipment, experts in the EOC have already identified suitable contractors, and it is expected work will commence this week,” he added.
On Friday, the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) confirmed on social media that the agency is aware of a developing large-scale fish death event on the Lower Darling-Baaka below Menindee Main Weir through to Weir 32, adjacent to the Menindee township.
“It is estimated that millions of fish, predominantly Bony Herring (Bony Bream) have been affected, as well as smaller number of other large-bodied species such as Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Carp,” said the department.
Cameron Lay, Director of freshwater environments at NSW DPI, told local media that the situation is “very distressing”.
The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has traveled to Baghdad to hold talks with Iraqi officials and sign a joint security cooperation document, following his landmark trips to China and the United Arab Emirates.
Heading a delegation, Ali Shamkhani was welcomed by his Iraqi counterpart, Qassim al-Araji, at Baghdad airport on Sunday.
He also paid a visit to the site where Iran’s legendary anti-terror commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), were assassinated by the US three years ago.
Shamkhani is expected to meet with top Iraqi political and economic officials and sign a joint security cooperation document that has been discussed for several months.
The signing of the document, which reinforces mutual responsibility and commitment with the aim of protecting good neighborliness and securing common borders, plays a key role in ending the illegal presence of armed counter-revolutionary elements and those affiliated with the Israeli regime in Iran’s northwestern borders.
Shamkhani recently represented Iran in the China-hosted talks that led to the restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after seven years of estrangement.
He also visited the UAE upon an invitation by Emirati National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, an infamous incident hogged liemight all over the world. “We have always been friends. That was just a misunderstanding and the media made a big noise out of it. I will just say that Bhajji pa has supported me from the beginning in every way, including recently with commentary tips. He has supported me and helped me a lot and I am very thankful to him. The duo appeared on ‘Pitch-Ed Battles with Vikram Sathaye’ on Glance Live Fest where Harbhajan spoke about the embarrassment both him and Sreesanth had to go through after the incident.
“Whatever happened in that IPL match, it was wrong. From my side it was wrong. I made a mistake by doing that. Because of it my colleague, my own teammate had to face embarrassment. I had to face the embarrassment that I had done a thing like this,” said the former India spinner.

Hyderabad: The four-day Hyderabad City Police sports meet at Shiv Kumar Lal Police Stadium concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony on Saturday.
K.Ramakrishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary Finance, who presided over the ceremony, received the guard of honour from all the sports contingents. The highlight of the day was the tug of war between the chief guest team and the police commissioner team, which saw the chief guest team emerge as the winners.
Fencing was a special attraction of the event, while the 100-meter sprints and relays by men and women left the audience spellbound. The scintillating dance performances and patriotic songs added to the excitement of the day.
The closing ceremony also included the distribution of trophies and medals to the winners of various events. CAR headquarters was the overall winner in the competition and the CSW-Taskforce team stood second. Constable Revanth of CAR and WPC Sahiti of South east zone stood as the fastest man and woman of HCP.
Lauding the competitive spirit, Hyderabad Police Commissioner, CV Anand congratulated the winners.

Towards the end, Axar Patel struck a few lusty blows as he was running out of partners but the departure of Mohammed Siraj brought an end to India’s troubles with the bat.
Australian bowlers have vindicated their skipper’s decision to bowl first and how. A dominant bowling display led by Mitchell Starc has helped them bowl India out for a paltry total of 117. Like the first ODI, it was Mitchell Starc who set the tone early, accounting for Shubman Gill. After that early scalp, he did lose his radar on a few occasions but bounced back striking twice in two deliveries. He then went on to remove the in-form KL Rahul to put India in more trouble. After being brought on as the first change, Sean Abbott came to the party as well to reduce India to 49-5. Having picked in the side for this game, Nathan Ellis dismissed Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to break the back of the Indian batting lineup. Sean Abbott then went bang, bang before Mitchell Starc claimed the final wicket to finish with figures of 5 for 53.

Visakhapatnam: Rain is likely to play a role in the second ODI between India and Australia at Visakhapatnam.
The second ODI between India and Australia will be played at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. But weather could play a spoilsport and ruin the party of millions of cricket fans who will catch this match live from the stadium or through electronic mediums. Earlier, a weather forecast had suggested the likelihood of rain on Saturday and Sunday in Visakhapatnam, where rain was reported multiple times on Saturday evening.
Andhra Cricket Association secretary SR Gopinath Reddy said on Saturday that there is a good arrangement of super soppers and an underground drainage system at the stadium.
“There is a good arrangement of super soppers and underground drainage system in the stadium. We are also covering the whole outfield, not only the pitch. The drainage system in this ground is good. If it rains only for a few hours, then the game can be started after drying the ground. But if it rains for a long time, it will affect the match. After the rain stops, we can prepare the ground within an hour,” said Reddy to ANI.
India is currently leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0.
In the first match, spells from Mohammed Shami (3/17), Mohammed Siraj (3/29) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/46) helped India bundled out Australia for 188 in just 35.4 overs. Only Mitchell Marsh (81 off 65) was able to make a big contribution with the bat.
In the chase of 189, Mitchell Starc’s (3/49) opening spell reduced India to 39/4 and Marcus Stoinis also took two scalps, but a 108-run stand between KL Rahul (75*) and Ravindra Jadeja (45*) helped India seal a five-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare.
Jadeja was adjudged as ‘Man of the Match’ for his all-round performance.
The third ODI will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22.
Earlier, India had won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia after sealing a 2-1 win in the red-ball leg of the series. With this win, they have qualified for the ICC World Test Championship and will face Australia at The Oval, London from June 7 onwards.
