Melbourne: Stella Assange thanked the spectrum of lawmakers who campaigned for her husband, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, to be freed during her visit Thursday to Australia’s Parliament House, where political leaders differed over how welcome the convicted felon was in his homeland.

“Julian is overjoyed and so grateful to the Australian people, to the members of Parliament and to the government and also the opposition who came together to voice the need for his release,” Stella said.

Assange has made no public comment since he arrived in Australia on Wednesday after pleading guilty to obtaining and publishing US military secrets in a deal with US Justice Department prosecutors that ended his 14-year legal battle for freedom.

The Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group began with a few federal lawmakers in 2019 and expanded to 47 — one of five of the total in Canberra — as a consensus grew that the prosecution over WikiLeaks’ release of almost half a million documents relating to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010 had taken too long.

His lawyers now want to swing that public and political support behind a campaign to have Assange’s conviction pardoned.

“President (Joe) Biden or any subsequent president absolutely can and, in my mind, should issue a pardon to Julian Assange,” lawyer Barry Pollack said.

But while Australian lawmakers largely agreed that the time had come for Assange to be brought home, they disagreed on whether he deserved the same level of support as Australians recently released from arbitrary detention in China, Iran and Myanmar thanks to government intervention.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been credited with the diplomatic coup that enabled Assange to be released from a London prison to travel to Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Western Pacific where he pleaded guilty to a single charge under the Espionage Act.

With credit given for the five years Assange had spent in Belmarsh Prison fighting extradition, he was allowed to return to Australia without serving any more jail time.

Opposition lawmakers argue Albanese risked damaging relations with the United States, Australia’s most important security partner, by telephoning Assange moments after the former computer hacker had landed in Canberra.

“It’s not necessary nor appropriate for Anthony Albanese to welcome home Julian Assange on the same day he’s admitted to espionage acts,” opposition spokesperson on foreign affairs Simon Birmingham said. But Stella argued her husband should never have been charged.

“He was pleading guilty to committing journalism. This case criminalises journalism, journalistic activity, standard journalist activity of news gathering and publishing,” she said.

Questioned at a news conference after Assange’s return, Albanese declined to say whether he considered him a journalist who had been wrongly pursued by US authorities.

“I think that there will continue to be different views about Julian Assange and his activity,” Albanese said. “My role as Prime Minister has been to firmly say that whatever the views that people have, there was no purpose to be served by this ongoing incarceration,” he added.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong distanced the government from the Assange campaign for the crime to be pardoned. “That is a matter for Mr. Assange and his legal team and the decision on that is a matter for the United States,” Wong said. “What we are pleased about is that he is home. We did think his incarceration had dragged on,” she added.

Stella, a South Africa-born lawyer who married her husband in prison in 2022, has given few clues to his future career.

“He plans to swim in the ocean every day. He plans to sleep in a real bed. He plans to taste real food and he plans to enjoy his freedom,” she said. “Julian is the most principled man I know and he will always defend human rights and speak out against injustice and he can choose how he does that, because he is a free man,” she added.

Nasrallah: Iran ‘strong fortress of resistance’ against oppressors

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has described Iran as the “strong fortress of resistance” against oppressors, saying the Islamic establishment serves as a role model.

Nasrallah addressed via video link from Beirut a ceremony in Tehran Thursday to mark the 40th day since the passing of President Ebrahim Raeisi in a helicopter crash, hailing the country for taking the upheaval in its stride with fortitude and composure.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran emerged proudly and admirably from this tragic incident and presented an advanced and lofty model that is strong in facing all challenges,” he said.

Nasrallah said the incident, in which President Raeisi lost his life along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others in mountainous terrain in northwest Iran, was “very painful and historic” which left Iran faced with a threat.

“However, the rule is that we must turn threats into opportunities, as always emphasized by Eminent Leader of the Revolution” Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, he said.

“We have faced similar big and dangerous incidents in recent years. As an example, we can point to the assassination of two dear commanders, Hajj Qassem Soleimani and Hajj Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, that was a huge damage and at the same time a threat,” he added.

Lieutenant General Soleimani, head of Iran’s Quds Force, and Abu Mahdi, an Iraqi commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces, were assassinated in a US airstrike ordered by then-president Donald Trump at Baghdad airport in January 2020.

“But this threat turned into an opportunity. These bloodsheds marked the breakout of the uprising and a new life for the resistance and the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran and all the resistance movements in the region,” Nasrallah said.

Iran responded to the assassination by launching a barrage of missiles at US bases in Iraq, causing  brain concussion injuries among at least 110 American soldiers stationed there. Iranian officials have repeatedly vowed to take further steps and imposed sanctions on individuals taking part in the crime.

In April this year, Iran responded with its first-ever direct operation against Israel, launching over 300 missiles and attack drones from its territory at targets in the occupied territories, after an airstrike destroyed the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus, killing 12 people.

The operation left Israel, still reeling from coordinated armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza envelope of southern territories under Israeli occupation, further shell-shocked.

“All this was thanks to wise leadership [of Ayatollah Khamenei] and management and responsibility [of Iranian officials] in Iran and the region,” Nasrallah said.

The tragic loss of President Raeisi and his companions is “also an example, the outcome of which depends on our behavior”, the Hezbollah chief said.

“Thank God, the people of Iran became a model for the whole world through their direct presence and the way they dealt with the incident with general peace and stability,” he added.

Nasrallah said, “Enemies who were lying in wait and talking about riots happening here and there saw with their own eyes that despite all the difficult conditions it faced due to this incident, Iran was calm, stable, unified and united.”

He touched on millions of mourners who took to the streets in Iranian cities to pay their respects to the president and his companions and take part in their funeral processions, saying their huge presence carried a strong message for both friends and foes.

“The friends who were worried when they saw the presence of millions gained confidence and trust, and the enemies who were happy realized that they were facing a nation that was aware and present, that had great insight and loyalty. The funeral was an expression of this great and enormous loyalty.”

Putin: Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel best way to punish aggressor

Russian President Vladimir Putin says Iran’s “tactful and wise” response to Israeli aggression on its consulate in Syria was the best way to punish the aggressor.

Putin made the remarks in a phone conversation with President Ebrahim Raeisi on Tuesday.

“What the Islamic Republic of Iran did in response to what happened criminally and in the light of the inaction of the [UN] Security Council, was the best way to punish the aggressor and represented the tactfulness and rationality of Iran’s politicians,” Putin said.

The Russian president said the Israeli regime’s “terrorist act” against the Iranian consulate in Damascus was against all international standards and rules.

He also strongly criticized the United States and certain Western countries for creating tension in the region. “We believe that the Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the main pillars of stability and security in the region.”

“We firmly declare that we will respond to any action against Iran’s interests with greater force and broader and more painful than the previous [response],” President Raeisi said in the phone call.

The Iranian president also said Tehran’s response to the Israeli regime was within the framework of international law, saying Israel’s terrorist act was a clear violation of international law and a serious threat to global peace.

“The destructive role of the US and some western countries and the inaction and inefficiency of international institutions, including the United Nations and the Security Council, in dealing with the aggressive action of the Zionist regime in attacking the Iranian consulate in Syria caused the Islamic Republic of Iran to exercise its right to self-defense.”

Raeisi further thanked Moscow for its “principled and constructive” stance against the Israeli aggression in Damascus.

He appreciated the diplomatic efforts of the Russian government to thwart the conspiracies of the United States and certain Western countries in the UN Security Council.

“To those countries that have adopted double standards in the face of the crimes of the Zionist regime and express concerns about escalating tensions in the region, we advise them to rather stop supporting the Zionists genocide and crimes against the oppressed Palestinian people to preserve peace and stability in the region,” Raeisi said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched extensive missile and drone strikes against the occupied territories late on April 13 in response to Israel’s missile attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Operation True Promise has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the occupied territories. The extent of damage is yet to be specified.

Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the IRGC Quds Force, his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers were assassinated in the Israeli attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission.

Netanyahu not Iran should be blamed for regional tensions

Speaking to reporters following a cabinet meeting in the capital Ankara, Erdoğan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his administration are responsible for Iran’s aerial attacks on April 13, but Western powers refuse to acknowledge this fact, Daily Sabah reported.

“The main actor responsible for the tension that gripped our hearts on the evening of April 13 is Netanyahu and his bloody administration,” he said.

Noting that the weekend attacks have shown the double standards of the West and the potential of war in the region, the Turkish president said it is crucial to identify the main reason behind the April 13 attack.

“Since Oct. 7, the Israeli government has been taking provocative steps to fuel the fire in the region,” Erdoğan said, adding that Israel’s attack on Iran’s consular building in Damascus, in violation of the Vienna Convention, was the last straw.

He continued by saying that not that many countries reacted against Israel’s attack, which completely disregarded international law.

“Those who have not voiced any opposition to Israeli aggression for months, are now racing to condemn Iran’s response,” Erdoğan said, adding that they should actually condemn and criticize Netanyahu, who is responsible for killing 34,000 civilians, including women, children and babies, journalists.

“Fueling the fire, continuously spoiling Netanyahu administration benefits no one,” he said, adding that such an unjust stance will lead to new tensions until the oppression and genocide in Gaza ends.

Erdoğan also said Turkey did not allow the sale of any materials that could be used for military purposes by Israel, long before the massacres in Gaza.

Zionists will come to know Iran’s real response if they make a mistake: Raeisi

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi says the Zionists controlling the regime of Israel will only come to know the true scale and intensity of Iran’s military response if they decide for a new attack on Iran.

Raeisi made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting in Tehran with Vice-President of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council of Lebanon Sheikh Ali al-Khatib.

The remarks came amid reports suggesting that the Israeli regime may decide to retaliate a wave of Iranian drone and missile attacks that were carried out over the weekend in response to an Israeli airstrike on April 1 on the Iranian consulate in Syria’s capital.

Iranian authorities said after the Sunday operation targeting Israel that they were only a limited punishment for what the Tel Aviv regime did in Damascus.

They have warned that any escalation of the situation will be met with a much stronger and heavier response from Iran.

“In case of any mistake, the Zionists and their sponsors will come to know the meaning of Iran’s real and extensive response,” Raeisi said.

During the meeting, the Iranian president also appreciated the stances adopted by the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council of Lebanon in support of the resistance campaign in the region.

Khatib, for his part, said he was conveying a message of gratitude from the Lebanese people to Iran for its strong military action against the Israeli regime.

The Lebanese cleric said Iran had made Muslim nations proud by its steadfastness against pressures, sanctions and animosities over the years while he insisted that no other country in the region has ever managed to stand so firmly against a regime which he said is enjoying support from all powers of the world.

Iran says Israel prime source of tension in region

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (L) and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi of Indonesia

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the Israeli regime is the main source of tension in the region.

He says Iran’s retaliatory operation of April 13 against Israel was within the framework of the legitimate right to self-defense and international law.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a phone conversation with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi on Tuesday.

The duo discussed the latest developments in the region as well as relations between Tehran and Jakarta.

The top Iranian diplomat said Tehran has never been for escalation in the region, and the Islamic Republic will always remain the pillar of regional stability.

Amir-Abdollahian thanked Jakarta’s position in condemning the Israeli regime’s April 1 attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria, and invited his Indonesian counterpart to visit Tehran.

Marsudi, for her part, said Indonesia was ready to cooperate further with Iran regarding the Palestinian issue.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched extensive missile and drone strikes against the occupied territories late on Saturday in response to Israel’s missile attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Operation True Promise has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the occupied territories. The extent of damage is yet to be specified.

Following the reprisal, Iran warned Israel against taking any retaliatory action and also urged the United States to stay away from invovlement in the conflict and signaled that it viewed the matter as “concluded.”

Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the IRGC Quds Force, his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers were assassinated in the Israeli attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission.

Regional confrontation is in no one's interests

The EU’s only strength is its diplomatic power of conviction. It’s obvious that some member countries have more influence over Israel than others, notably Germany, which has excellent relations with the Israelis. The Americans could, if they wished, use other resources, notably through their arms deliveries to Israel. In the past, they have already taken binding decisions. But today, I don’t think they want to use the levers at their disposal, Josep Borrell has been the European Union’s (EU) high representative for foreign affairs told Lemonde.

Borrell made the remarks in reaction to a question about the role of the EU in contributing to appeasement in the Middle East following Iran-Israel development.

The EU’s political aim is to avoid escalation. It’s like a game of chess, with each side advancing its pawns. Israel attacked an Iranian diplomatic representation in Syria, Iran retaliated. Now it’s Israel’s turn to react.

But we are warning Israel that it is in everyone’s interest that there should be no regional confrontation. This is also what we said to the Iranians the day after the attack on the Damascus consulate: it’s in nobody’s interest, and especially not in the interest of the Gazans, that there should be a regional conflict because that would mean that the war would not end.

The Hamas attack was unprecedented, and so was the Israeli response. The seeds of hatred are being sown for three generations. More than ever, the only possible solution is separation [between

Pakistan says Iran entitled to retaliate as Israel breaches sovereignty

Pakistan’s defense minister says the Israeli assault on the Iranian consulate in Damascus was a breach of its sovereignty, and that Tehran’s reaction to the violation was defensive and in proportion to the attack.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Monday condemned the Israeli attack on Iran’s diplomatic premises in Damascus that led to the assassination of seven senior military advisors, including a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

During a talk show, he emphatically stated that Iran is entitled to retaliate since Israel flagrantly violated the international law by attacking the Iranian consulate.

Asif said the illegal entity targeted the Iranian mission in Damascus because of Tehran’s unwavering pro-Palestinian stance.

The defense minister also reaffirmed his country’s support for Gazans, saying Islamabad is firmly standing by the Palestinians.

He expressed concern that escalating tensions in West Asia could have repercussions on other nations, such as Pakistan. He further warned that countries supporting Israel could also find themselves caught in the flames of war.

“We do not want tensions to increase, however, genocide of Palestinians must be stopped,” Asif, 74, said while speaking on Geo News’ Capital Talk program.

He emphasized that the Palestinians’ sacrifices will not be in vain, expressing optimism that they will achieve independence in the near future.

Furthermore, he clarified that Pakistan is not under any form of pressure to recognize Israel.

Pakistanis flocked the streets on Sunday as they celebrated Iran’s retaliation strikes over Israel.

Scores of people gathered in front of the Karachi Press Club to welcome Iran’s attack on Israel in retaliation for the Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on 1 April.

Speakers addressed the protesters and praised Iran for being “the only Islamic country” to carry out countermeasures against Israel over the past 50 years.

“We pay tribute to the government and leadership of Iran for their courageous action and congratulate them on their successful countermeasures against the murderous usurper Zionist” regime, they said.

Attacks on ZNPP raise risks for nuclear safety: IAEA chief

“Over the past 10 days the first of these principles has been violated repeatedly in what marks a step change, increase in risk to nuclear safety and security at the plant,” he said at a UN Security Council meeting.

Grossi reminded the Security Council that last year he outlined the principles of ensuring safety at the ZNPP to avert the danger of a nuclear incident and called on Russia and Ukraine to observe them.

In May 2023 Grossi proposed that the UNSC support five principles of ensuring safety at the ZNPP: there should be no attack of any kind from or against the plant; the ZNPP should not be used for the storage of, or as a base for heavy weapons or military personnel that could be used for an attack from the plant; offsite power to the plant should not be put at risk; all structures and systems essential to the safe operation of the ZNPP should be protected from attacks or acts of sabotage; no action should be taken that undermines these principles.

A nuclear accident could still happen at the ZNPP, even with all its reactors now being in a cold shutdown, added Grossi.

“Even though the plant’s six reactors are now in cold shutdown, with the final unit shifting into that status two days ago following the IAEA’s recommendation, the potential dangers of a major nuclear accident remain very real,” he said.

“We are getting dangerously close to a nuclear accident. We must not allow complacency to let a roll of the dice to decide what happens tomorrow. We must do everything in our power today to minimize the risk of an accident,” the IAEA chief warned.

Grossi also noticed that the IAEA wouldn’t say who is responsible for the recent attacks on the nuclear power plant until the agency has indisputable evidence.

“We don’t stray into speculation,” he said.

The agency’s director general mentioned that the IAEA would conduct another rotation of its staff at the ZNPP power plant on April 16.
