Monkeypox kills 610 in Congo, Says Health Minister Roger Kamba

Kinshasa: At least 610 people were killed due to monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said Health Minister Roger Kamba.

The minister urged the population to adhere to protective measures, especially with the upcoming school year in early September, and to get vaccinated as soon as vaccines become available, Xinhua news agency reported.

The country has reported 17,801 suspected cases so far.

Suspected cases are being reported in conflict-affected provinces that host the majority of the country’s 7.3 million internally displaced people, which risks “worsening an already untenable situation for a population devastated by decades of conflict,” said a statement released Tuesday by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a Global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan for monkeypox also known as mpox to end human-to-human transmission of smallpox through coordinated efforts at global, regional, and national levels.

“The mpox outbreaks in the DRC and neighbouring countries can be controlled, and can be stopped,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

In the city of Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture, four people suffered minor injuries in gusty winds on Wednesday. Weather officials estimated the touchdown of a tornado based on the extent of damage and eyewitnesses.

City officials said the four were in their teens to 80s, and they included a girl whose leg was cut by broken window glass and a man in his 70s whose arm was hit by a flying roof tile.

The city was hit by more violent winds late at night on the same day, NHK reported.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov released on bail, now under investigation

Paris: Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the encrypted messaging service Telegram, was released after paying a five-million-euro (about $5.6 million) bail, but he is required to report to the police twice a week, Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said.

Durov is officially placed under investigation on six charges and he was prohibited from leaving France during the investigation, Beccuau added on Wednesday night as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Durov was arrested by French Police at an airport outside Paris on Saturday night.

Beccuau said on Monday that the Telegram founder is accused of 12 criminal offences, including failing to act against Telegram users involved in cyberbullying, sharing pedophilic content and glorifying terrorism.

He added the arrest “comes in the context of a judicial investigation opened on July 8, 2024”.

It also concerns “refusal to communicate, at the request of competent authorities, information or documents necessary for carrying out and operating interceptions allowed by law,” the Paris prosecutor said.

In response to the arrest, the Telegram group said on its X account that the company “abides by European Union (EU) laws, including the Digital Services Act”.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform,” it added.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that the arrest of Durov is “in no way a political decision”.

Durov’s arrest in France “took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation,” Macron said on social media platform X.

After the arrest, Russia’s embassy in Paris has referred a note to the French Foreign Ministry demanding consular access to Durov, the TASS news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, owner of the US social media platform X, and Edward Snowden, former US National Security Agency contractor, condemned Durov’s arrest on Sunday.

Los Angeles: The US has reported more than 50 illnesses and eight deaths in Listeria outbreak, according to the latest data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Listeria is a hardy germ that can remain on surfaces, like meat slicers, and foods, even at refrigerated temperatures, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

It can also take up to 10 weeks for some people to have symptoms of listeriosis, according to CDC.

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data show that meats sliced at delis, including Boar’s Head brand liverwurst, are contaminated with Listeria and are making people sick, according to CDC.

Listeria spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food.

A total of 57 people have been hospitalised due to Listeria infections in the country, and eight deaths have now been reported, according to CDC.

This is the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak linked to cantaloupe.

The CDC requested the public not to eat recalled deli products.

People who are at higher risk of getting sick with Listeria, such as those who are pregnant, are aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system, are suggested to avoid eating meats sliced at deli counters, unless heated until steaming hot just before serving.

The new deaths include two in South Carolina and one each in Florida, Tennessee and New Mexico. Illinois, New Jersey and Virginia have also reported deaths in the outbreak, which genetic testing has linked to liverwurst products manufactured by Boar’s Head.

Boar’s Head has recalled more than 7 million pounds of 71 different meat and poultry products as of July 30, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Iran slams Israeli scheme to build synagogue within Al-Aqsa Mosque

Iran has condemned in the strongest terms remarks by an Israeli minister regarding a plan to construct a synagogue inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East al-Quds.

In a statement on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kana’ani slammed Israel’s Itamar Ben-Gvir, who announced the plan a day earlier.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islam’s third holiest site and a symbol of Palestinian identity.

“The cabinet of the criminal Zionist regime is determined to carry out its sinister agenda regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the extent that it shamelessly declares its malevolent intention to build a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Kana’ani stated in a post on X.

It was the first time for the Israeli minister to openly speak about building a synagogue inside the complex, strengthening the narrative that the Muslim holy site and Palestinian national symbol is under threat from the occupying regime.

“If I could do anything I wanted, I would put an Israeli flag on the site,” Ben-Gvir said in an interview with Israel’s Army Radio. When asked by the interviewer whether he would build a synagogue within the site if it were up to him, he replied: “Yes.”

Ben-Gvir has repeatedly visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, despite a longstanding ban on Jews praying at the site.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, while strongly condemning such statements and schemes, warns against any infringement on the sacred boundaries of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and new provocations by the Zionists crossing the red lines of the Islamic Ummah,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman underscored.

Various countries and international organizations also reacted to the remarks by the Israeli minister.

The United Nations cautioned that his statement risks escalating the already tense situation.

Jordan vowed to pursue international legal measures to protect the holy site, while Qatar urged the international community to take immediate action

“In light of the awakening of pure human conscience and global hatred against crimes committed by Zionists, today Muslims and freedom-loving people around the world are united in their call to support Palestine and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to prosecute the criminal Zionists,” Kana’ani stated.

17,000 martyrs outcome of west-baked shameless MKO terrorism

In a post on his X account, Nasser Kan’ani wrote, “8th of Shahrivar (August 29) coincides with the martyrdom anniversary of martyrs Rajaee and Bahonar the then president and prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran who were assassinated by MKO terrorist group as backed by the West and this day is named after the “Day of Fighting Terrorism”, which is reminder of bitter and unforgettable reality in the memory of the noble nation of Iran.”

The movement of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq Organization (MKO), which came to being from the enemy’s plot first resorted to the malacious assassinations of the people, organized assassinations of the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the ringleaders of the terrorist group fled to France and with the material and spiritual support of some Western governments, as false advocates of the human rights, they continued their criminal acts against the Islamic Republic, government officials and people of the country, he emphasized.

In the continuation of their disgraceful life, they, MKO terrorist group, took refuge and resorted to ex-Iraqi deposed dictator Saddam Hussein and entered into a cowardly war against Iranian people along with Baath regime of Iraq.

Commemorating the Government Week, Kan’ani noted, “We salute the name and memory of martyrs Shahid Rajaei and Shahid Bahonar and also martyrs of the Islamic Revolution who dedicated their lives for safeguarding the values of the Islamic Revolution.”

Dhaka: Former Bangladesh speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and ex-Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi have been arrested over the killing of a goldsmith during the recent quota reform protests that led to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, media reports said on Thursday.

Munshi, 74, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday night in the murder case filed in Rangpur, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.

The case was filed against 17 people, including Munshi and former speaker of Parliament Chaudhury, for the killing of Muslim Uddin Milon, a 38-year-old goldsmith. Besides, many unnamed people were accused in the case.

Chaudhury, 46, served as the first female speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad from April 2013 until August 2024. Milon was shot dead on July 19 in Rangpur during the student-led movement against a controversial quota system in government jobs, which later turned into a mass uprising that ousted 76-year-old Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, according to The Daily Star newspaper.

According to the case statement, when a clash broke out between students and Awami League activists during a protest in the City Bazaar area, police opened fire indiscriminately under the orders of the accused persons. Milon was hit by a bullet at that time and taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead, the report said.

Over 230 people were killed in the incidents of violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina-led government, taking the death toll to more than 600 since the massive protest by students first started in mid-July. Many senior Awami League leaders, lawmakers and former Ministers went into hiding following the fall of Hasina-led government. Munshi had also been hiding since August 5, according to the leading Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo.

He became the commerce minister during the third consecutive term of Awami League government led by Hasina, according to the report. Hasina, who fled to India on August 5, is facing at least 75 cases, including murder charges, against her.
