Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

Philippine Nobel Winner, Journalist Maria Ressa Acquitted Of Tax Fraud

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the decision.

Manila, Philippines:

Philippines Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and her news site Rappler were acquitted of tax fraud by a trial court on Tuesday, in another legal victory for the embattled journalist.

Ressa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 alongside a Russian journalist, is head of Rappler, which earned a reputation for its intense scrutiny of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his deadly war on drugs.

After the verdict was announced, Ressa told reporters she felt “good” about the court’s decision.

Ressa’s acquittal was expected after she was cleared of similar tax charges nine months ago.

Those charges stem from a 2018 government indictment that accuses Ressa and Rappler of dodging tax payments after failing to declare proceeds of a 2015 sale of depositary receipts to foreign investors.

Ressa, 59, is currently on bail and was convicted in 2020 for cyber libel in one of several cases against the website filed by government agencies. She maintained those cases were politically motivated.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who has been in office for 14 months, has said he would not interfere in the court cases against Rappler.

Rappler is still operating unhindered pending its appeal against a closure order from the securities regulator.

The Philippines is ranked 132 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index, describing its media as “extremely vibrant despite the government’s targeted attacks and constant harassment” against journalists that are “too critical”.

Hyderabad:

Ten MBBS students of state-run Gandhi Medical College here were suspended on Monday for one year, for allegedly ragging their juniors.

The suspension orders were issued after the anti-ragging committee took a decision to this effect following an inquiry which found them to be “indulging in ragging” over the past few days, an official said.

The students who were ragged, complained to the anti-ragging cell in UGC, New Delhi, he said, adding that the matter was conveyed to the Telangana authorities.

“We have suspended (them) for one year and we have evicted them from the hostel,” he added.

G20 Delhi Declaration Sent A "Positive Signal": China In First Comments

G20 Delhi Declaration Sent A 'Positive Signal': China In First Comments

PM Modi exchanges greetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Beijing:

China finally broke its silence on the New Delhi G20 summit saying that the Declaration adopted by the member nations has sent a “positive signal” that the influential grouping is “working together” to tackle global challenges and promote world economic recovery.

India on Saturday pulled off a big diplomatic win after the G20 summit held under its presidency adopted a consensus declaration overcoming major differences on the Russia-Ukraine war, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for ending the “global trust deficit”.

In its first comment on the outcome of the two-day summit, which concluded Sunday, the Chinese foreign ministry spoke highly of its outcome.

“The summit adopted a leaders’ declaration, which reflects China’s proposition and states that the G20 would act in concrete ways through partnerships, sending a positive signal of the G20 working together to tackle global challenges and promote world economic recovery and global development,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.

Asked for her comment on the summit outcome, Mao said, “In the process of preparing for this New Delhi summit, China played a constructive role and always supported the summit in attaching importance to the concerns of developing countries and reaching fruitful outcomes in support of common development.” Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the summit, deputising for President Xi Jinping.

Asked whether China supports the absence of direct criticism of Russia in the G20 statement and whether softer language would help end the conflict in Ukraine, Mao said China’s stance on the Ukraine issue is consistent and clear.

“The G20 leaders’ declaration is the result of consensus reached through consultation and reflects the common understanding of all members. The New Delhi Summit reaffirms that the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation, not a platform to resolve geopolitical and security issues.

“We always believe that the key to the final resolution of the Ukraine crisis lies in discarding the Cold War mentality, attaching importance to and respecting all sides’ legitimate security concerns, and seeking a political solution through dialogue and negotiation,” she said.

The spokesperson said China will remain committed to promoting peace talks and working together with the international community for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.

Mao said China has always attached importance to and actively supported the work of the G20 and believes that it’s important for the grouping to stand in solidarity and cooperate to address various risks and challenges in the world economy and development.

“During his attendance at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, Premier Li Qiang elaborated on China’s views and propositions on G20 cooperation, calling on all parties to stick to the original aspiration of solidarity and cooperation, live up to the responsibility for peace and development as required by our times, and be partners in promoting the world economic recovery, open cooperation and global sustainable development,” she said.

The G20 member countries represent around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

The grouping comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the European Union. On Saturday, the African Union was admitted as G20’s permanent member.

No politics should be done on Maratha reservation issue: Maha Congress leader

After attending the all-party meeting, Thorat said, My party and I believe that there should be no politics on this. We will listen to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and extend support to the positive initiatives that will be taken by the govt

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat on Monday said that no politics should be done on the issue of Maratha reservation adding that his party will welcome and extend support to the positive initiatives taken by the state government on this matter.

After attending the all-party meeting, Thorat said, “My party and I believe that there should be no politics on this. We will listen to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and extend support to the positive initiatives that will be taken by the govt.”

An all-party meeting on the Maratha reservation chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde started at Sahyadari Guest House in Mumbai on Monday. Along with CM Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar also took part in the meeting.

In this regard, the former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati also said that he wrote letters to Uddhav Thackeray when he was the Chief Minister and he also wrote letters to current Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. “I have been writing letters to Uddhav Thackeray when he was CM also wrote to Eknath Shinde too and I have also gone on hunger strike for reservation. For past more than 2 years govt has done nothing but now due to Jarange Patil hunger strike govt has called an all-party meeting,” he said.

“Government must clear its stand on Maratha reservation. I have kept my stand in the meeting. I was not supposed to come for the meeting but it’s for the community so I attended the meeting. Govt must listen to the demand of Jarange Patil as he has stopped drinking water and medical aid too. Govt must take decision now. It’s getting late now,” he added.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Ambadas Danve and Vijay Wadettiwar were also invited to the meeting.

Jayant Patil, Balasaheb Thorat, Anil Parab, Rajesh Tope, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Raju Patil, Vinod Nikolay, Sadbhau Khot, Rajendra Gavai, Sunil Tatkare, Gautam Sonawane are some of the leaders were also present in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Maratha outfits had called for a bandh today in protest against the recent lathi charge by the police in Jalna district against protesters demanding reservation in Maharashtra.

The call for a bandh (shutdown) has received widespread support from various political parties. Suhas Desai, the head of the city unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), has voiced his support for the Bandh. Similarly, Pradeep Shinde, the city president of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has also backed the move.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday night held a meeting with a group of protesters from Jalna in Mumbai, and later said that “there was a positive discussion.” The meeting was convened after a delegation of protesters from Jalna came and met CMÂ Eknath Shinde in Mumbai.

The protesters have been demanding reservation for the Maratha community.

“There has been a positive discussion with the delegation sent by Maratha agitation leader Manoj Jarange Patil. This delegation will discuss with Manoj Jarange, and we hope that this will find a way, CM Shinde said while speaking to reporters after the meeting.

On September 1, a clash broke out between police and those demanding reservations for the Maratha community. Police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, Manoj Jarange Patil who works as a coordinator for the Maratha Morcha and has been on a hunger strike for the past few weeks for Maratha reservations continued his strike.

He has held extensive talks with the Maharashtra government but a breakthrough is yet to be achieved.
Jarange Patil has demanded a change in the ordinance issued by the state government regarding Maratha reservations. Their stand is that the fast to death will continue unless the desired change is made in the ordinance.

Morocco quake toll passes 2,800 as rescuers search for survivors

The death toll from Morocco’s deadliest earthquake in more than six decades has risen to more than 2,800, as rescuers raced against time to find survivors.

Search teams from Spain, Britain and Qatar were joining Moroccan rescue efforts on Monday after a 6.8-magnitude quake struck late on Friday in the High Atlas Mountains, with the epicenter 72 km (45 miles) southwest of Marrakech.

State TV reported the death toll had risen to 2,862 with 2,562 people injured. Rescuers said the traditional mud brick houses ubiquitous in the region reduced the chances of finding survivors because they had crumbled.

Footage from the remote village of Imi N’Tala showed men and dogs clambering over steep slopes covered in rubble.

After an initial response that was described as too slow by some survivors, search and rescue efforts appeared to be speeding up on Monday, with tent camps appearing in some locations where people were preparing for a fourth night outdoors.

A video filmed by Moroccan outlet 2M showed a military helicopter flying over an area close to the epicenter, dropping sacks of essential supplies to isolated families.

With much of the quake zone in hard-to-reach areas, the authorities have not issued any estimates for the number of people missing.

The harm done to Morocco’s cultural heritage has been emerging gradually. Buildings in Marrakech old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were damaged. The quake also did major damage to the historically significant 12th-century Tinmel Mosque.

Residents in Tinmel, a remote village closer to the epicenter where 15 people were killed, said they had been sharing food, water and medicine, but desperately needed tents and blankets to shelter from the cold mountain nights.

In a televised statement on Sunday, government spokesperson Mustapha Baytas defended the government’s response, saying every effort was being made on the ground.

The army said it was reinforcing search and rescue teams, providing drinking water and distributing food, tents and blankets.

King Mohammed VI has not addressed the nation since the disaster. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch told local media the government would compensate victims, but gave few details.

Morocco has accepted offers of aid from Spain and Britain, which both sent search and rescue specialists with sniffer dogs, from the United Arab Emirates, and from Qatar, which said on Sunday a search-and-rescue team was on its way.

State TV said the government had assessed needs and considered the importance of coordinating relief efforts before accepting help, and that it might accept relief offers from other countries later.

Over 10,000 More Jobs To Go At UK Household Goods Company Wilko

Over 10,000 More Jobs To Go At UK Household Goods Company Wilko

Wilko had earlier announced its collapse in August, putting 12,500 jobs at risk.

London:

More than 10,000 staff will lose their jobs at struggling UK household goods retailer Wilko, administrators said Monday, after last-ditch talks on a rescue deal with the owner of the HMV music store chain collapsed.

Canadian businessman Doug Putman had been in talks with administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to buy some 200 shops operated by Wilko, which went bust in August.

But both Putman and PwC said that those discussions to rescue it as a going concern had reached an end — despite having backing from Wilko management, staff and PwC — as it was revealed that as many as 10,196 extra employees face the axe.

PwC had already announced in recent weeks that more than 1,600 staff would be made redundant.

“The joint administrators have explored all potential opportunities to save the business,” PwC said in a statement on Monday.

“However, despite extensive efforts, it has become clear that no significant part of the Wilko operations can be rescued as a going concern.

“As a result, the joint administrators have today informed all staff that they will sadly commence the closure of all Wilko stores, the two distribution centres and the cessation of the majority of activities of the support centre.”

The statement noted that all shops are set to be closed by early October, resulting in 9,100 redundancies of store employees.

Distribution centre operations are expected to shutter on Friday, with “the majority” of its 886 remaining employees made redundant then.

Further lay-offs of 210 remaining support centre staff will also occur before early October as operations wind down, administrators said.

– ‘Disappointment’ –

B&M European Value Retail has agreed a £13-million ($16.3-million) deal to buy 51 Wilko stores, but without saying how jobs in those operations would be affected.

Those stores will also close and reopen under B&M’s branding, according to administrators.

Wilko, which operated some 400 stores across the UK and online, announced its collapse on August 10, putting 12,500 jobs at risk.

It blamed stubbornly high inflation and interest rates affecting businesses and consumers.

Hopes had been resting on a last-gasp deal with Putman, but he confirmed separately Monday that that would not be happening.

“It is with great disappointment that we can no longer continue in the purchase process for Wilko,” the businessman said in a statement.

“We had financing in place and received the full support of PwC, Wilko management and staff representatives.

“A stable foundation could not be secured to ensure long-term success for the business and its people in the way that we would have wanted.”

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to AFP that administrators were also in discussions with low-cost retailers Poundland and Home Bargains over a possible partial rescue deal.

But those talks also failed.

In its latest update, PwC said staff at 124 stores were informed Monday that those outlets will close on or before September 21, while timings for the closure of the remaining 222 stores would be announced “in due course”.

The GMB union’s general secretary Gary Smith said there were “thousands of families across the UK who are going to be impacted by this terrible decision.”

Earlier the union’s national officer Nadine Houghton had claimed that the firm, which was founded in 1930 in central England, had been “run into the ground” and staff were suffering the consequences.

Leader of the Britain’s opposition Labour party, Keir Starmer, also criticised the move on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Devastating for staff and their families and another symptom of Tory Britain,” he said, referring to the Conservative party which has held power in Britain for the last 13 years.
