All You Need To Know About The Heroic Battle Of Saragarhi

Battle of Saragarhi: The battle inspired the 2019 Bollywood film Kesari.

Today marks the 126th anniversary of the Battle of Saragarhi, a heroic battle fought by 21 brave Sikh soldiers against over 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai tribals in 1897. The event has inspired films, books, and countless people.

Here are five facts about the Battle of Saragarhi:

  • The Battle of Saragarhi took place on September 12, 1897, when 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36 Sikh Regiment of the British Indian army laid their lives defending the Saragarhi outpost in Waziristan. Saragarhi served as a communication relay post between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan.

  • On the morning of September 12, the Saragarhi outpost was besieged by over 10,000 Pathans who took positions and opened fires. At that time, there were just 21 Sikhs inside the Saragarhi fort.

  • One of the Sikh soldiers, Sepoy Gurmukh Singh, sent a message to his commander, Colonel Naughten, who told them to return fire. Despite being outnumbered, the valiant soldiers did not abandon the post and vowed to defend it.

  • The Battle of Saragarhi witnessed a heavy exchange of fire between the Pathans and the soldiers and lasted for about seven hours. As the soldiers ran out of ammunition, they requested their commander for more supplies. However, the ammunition did not arrive and the Sikh soldiers continued fighting till their last breath.

  • The battle inspired the 2019 Bollywood film Kesari starring Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra.

''Sorry. Not Sorry'': Ashneer Grover Reacts To Case Over His Indore Cleanliness Remark

''Sorry. Not Sorry'': Ashneer Grover Reacts To Case Over His Indore Cleanliness Remark

On Indore’s top rank in cleanliness survey, Ashneer Grover said the tag has been ‘bought’.

Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover has posted a strong-worded tweet in response to a defamation case filed against him for his comments on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey. He reacted to the row by saying ”Sorry to Indore” but adding that he was ”not sorry to any politician”.

Notably, a non-cognisable offence information report was registered against him on Monday after a video showed him commenting on Indore’s top rank in the Centre’s cleanliness survey and purportedly claiming it had been “bought”. The city has remained on top in the Centre’s Swachh Sarvekshan for six consecutive years.

”Sorry. Not Sorry. Sorry to Indore. You’ve got great people and a city. But politicians everywhere have got no chill. Unnecessary politics being made out of a statement made in jest in a playful conversation on Bhopal vs. Indore. Where the audience had fun – no offence was meant. None taken by anyone. No one getting offended now was even present in the room,” Mr Grover wrote on X.

See the tweet here:

He further said that he doesn’t care about an FIR, commenting that he wasn’t ”a pushover” and ”won’t be bullied”.

He added, ”Not Sorry to any politician. Ever. No one. Any party. Fire an FIR. File a case. It doesn’t matter – I am not a pushover – won’t be bullied. Don’t make an issue where there is none. It might be an election year – but people are smart. Indori people – super smart. I’ll come to Indore when I wish, as many times I wish…’.

He concluded by saying that Bhopal is his favourite, and also called it ”India’s best city.”

In an event in Indore, Mr Grover was heard in the video saying, “See, there is a concept – playing to the gallery, that is, wherever you go, praise it saying I have never seen such a nice city. Now the problem with me is that for three-four years I have heard that Indore is the cleanest city…you have bought the survey. It’s a simple thing.”

Mr Grover, however, immediately clarified he was not saying there was filth in Indore, and that he meant several construction works are going on in the city. Indore’s Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava called his statement ”an insult to the hard work of the city’s people and sanitation workers for cleanliness.”

Cow Vigilante Monu Manesar, Wanted For Double Murder And Riots, Detained

Manesar is a key accused in the murder of two Muslim men from Rajasthan.

New Delhi:

Cow vigilante Monu Manesar, who was wanted in connection with the murder of two men from Rajasthan and for inciting the violence in Nuh in July, has been detained by the Haryana Police.

The Bajrang Dal activist is a key accused in the murder of two Muslim men from Rajasthan, whose bodies were found in a car in Haryana in February.

Nasir, 25, and Junaid, 35, who were residents of a village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15. The next day, their bodies were found inside a car that had been set ablaze in Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani.

Sources in the Haryana Police said Manesar was detained on Tuesday under bailable sections of the Information Technology Act. They said he is likely to get bail by evening and the Rajasthan Police will take him into custody in the double-murder case.

“Our colleagues in the Haryana Police have informed us that Monu Manesar has been detained. After their legal procedures are complete, we will begin our procedure,” said Mridul Kachawa, superintendent of police of Bharatpur in Rajasthan

Manesar is also accused of inciting the violence that broke out in Haryana’s Nuh in July, in which at least six people were killed.  The violence had begun on July 31, during the ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra’ organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, and then spread to adjoining areas, including Gurugram.

Rumours of Manesar attending the Yatra had allegedly triggered the communal clashes. The cow vigilante, who was on the run in the murder case, had posted a video a few days before the procession, claiming that he would attend it. He had also exhorted his supporters to come out in large numbers.

This had allegedly enraged some people from the Muslim community, who viewed it as a threat, and triggered a heated exchange on social media.

Manesar’s aide, Bittu Bajrangi, had also been arrested in connection with the violence last month, and was later granted bail.

Asia Cup: Shreyas Iyer to miss Sri Lanka match after being advised rest due to back spasm

Colombo: Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will miss India’s second consecutive game in the Asia Cup after being advised rest for the Super 4 contest against Sri Lanka due to a back spasm.

India will take on Sri Lanka in a vital contest hours after completing an emphatic win over arch-rivals Pakistan on Monday night.

Iyer, who has returned to top flight cricket after six months following a back surgery, had also missed the contest against Pakistan.

Missing back to games has raised fresh questions over his fitness ahead of the World Cup in India next month.

Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm.” “He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka,” the BCCI said in a statement.

India went to the top of the points table in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup with the 228-run win over Pakistan.
KL Rahul was the last-minute replacement of Iyer in the playing eleven. Iyer had batted against Pakistan in India’s tournament opener in Pallekele on September 2.

North Korean leader arrives in Russia for talks with Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has arrived in Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that will involve discussing “sensitive” subjects, according to the Kremlin spokesman.

Russian state news agency Ria Novosti reported on Tuesday that a train carrying Kim entered Primorsky region in Russia’s Far East.

According to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, Kim, accompanied by officials from the military, the government, and his ruling Workers’ Party of Korea had left for Russia from Pyongyang by his private train on Sunday afternoon.

Kim does not travel abroad frequently, and the visit is his first trip abroad in four years.

“It will be a full-fledged visit,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media. “There will be negotiations between two delegations, and after that, if necessary, the leaders will continue their communication in a one-on-one format.”

Putin is currently in Vladivostok for the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, which runs through Wednesday.

Peskov said that the meeting between Putin and Kim would take place after the forum, and would discuss “sensitive” subjects.

“Obviously, as neighbors, our countries also cooperate in sensitive areas that should not be the subject of public disclosure and announcements. This is perfectly normal for neighboring states,” he said.

The US has claimed that Kim and Putin are likely to discuss providing Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine.

On Monday, Washington warned Pyongyang not to sell weapons to Russia that will be used in the war in Ukraine.

Peskov downplayed US “warnings” over the talks, saying “In building our relations with our neighbors, including North Korea, the important thing for us is the interests of our two countries, not Washington’s warnings.”

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “I will remind both countries that any transfer of arms from North Korea to Russia would be in violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

“We, of course, have aggressively enforced our sanctions against entities that fund Russia’s war effort, and we will continue to enforce those sanctions and will not hesitate to impose new sanctions if appropriate.”

Moscow and Pyongyang have further enhanced ties since the start of the war in Ukraine last year.

Kim has described the war in Ukraine as a US “proxy war” to destroy Russia. He has condemned Western military aid to Kiev and blamed the “hegemonic policy” and “high-handedness” of the United States and the West for the conflict.

Russia began what it calls a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moscow said the operation was aimed at defending Ukraine’s pro-Russia population in Donetsk and Luhansk, eastern Ukrainian regions, against persecution by Kiev.

Moscow has frequently warned that a continued supply of Western arms and military equipment for the Ukrainian military would only prolong the war.

Straighter Run-Up, Aggressive Rhythm Key To My ODI Success: Kuldeep Yadav

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes tweaks in his technique, including a straighter run-up and an aggressive rhythm, has helped him to improve his bowling and achieve success in ODI cricket. The 28-year-old has taken 27 wickets from 14 matches this year, the highest by an Indian bowler in ODIs. “After the (knee) surgery (last year), my run-up has become much straighter, and rhythm has become aggressive. My hand used to fall over but that has been controlled and now it (hand) is facing the batsman,” said Kuldeep in the post-match press conference.

Kuldeep said he had worked on spin and drift post his surgery to improve his efficiency.

“I exerted care not to lose my spin and drift without losing my pace. If a leg-spinner lands the ball on a good length, he can pick up wickets more regularly and loose balls can be reduced. You can be consistent,” he added.

Kuldeep said he worked with NCA physio Ashish Koushik post his surgery to reduce the burden on his knee while landing in the crease.

“I did not want to lose my zip, nip or drift. After surgery I went for a three-month recuperation at NCA and physio Ashish Koushik said I had to reduce the load on my knee. So, I worked to make my rhythm faster,” he said.

However, Kuldeep said it took him some time to make the remodelled action work at the top level cricket.

“I tried the new action in a practice game in Kanpur. The batsmen were struggling to face me. But even in the IPL and during the tour of the West Indies I was struggling with it (action).

“It took some 6-7 matches for me to make work at this level,” said Kuldeep.

‘Performing against a top opposition like Pakistan motivates me’

His (5/25) five-wicket haul helped India outclass Pakistan by a massive 228-run margin and Kuldeep said he will always remember this effort as it came against a top opposition.

“I will always remember that I picked up five wickets against Pakistan when I retire. It is a big thing for me because Pakistan players can play spin well. If you perform against a side that plays spin well in the subcontinent, it motivates you,” said he said.

Rupee Falls 9 Paise To Settle At Lifetime Low Of 83.22 Against US Dollar

Rupee depreciated for the 4th straight day by 9 paise, reaching a lifetime low of 83.22 to the dollar

New Delhi:

The Rupee depreciated for the fourth straight day and settled 9 paise lower at its lifetime low of 83.22 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday amid a firm American currency and elevated crude oil prices.

Positive trend in the domestic equity markets, however, provided a cushion to the rupee, according to forex traders.

Crude oil breached the USD 90 per barrel-mark after oil producing countries agreed to extend supply cut till December this year while dollar stayed firm on safe-haven demand.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.15 against the dollar and traded in the range of 83.12 to 83.22 against the greenback. It ended at the lowest level of 83.22 (provisional) against the dollar, registering a fall of 9 paise from its previous close.

On Wednesday, the rupee settled 9 paise lower at 83.13 against the dollar. Earlier, the Indian currency had closed at the same level of 83.13 on August 21.

The domestic unit has declined 60 paise since Monday when it had closed 9 paise lower at 82.71 against the greenback. On Tuesday, the unit had plunged 33 paise, the sharpest fall this week.

“We expect rupee to trade with a negative bias on strong dollar and elevated crude oil prices. Disappointing European data may further support dollar. Rising US treasury yields and concerns over global economic growth may also weigh on rupee,” Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose by 0.09 per cent to 104.95.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.39 per cent lower at USD 90.25 per barrel.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex closed 385.04 points or 0.58 per cent higher at 66,265.56 points while the broader Nifty jumped 116 points or 0.59 per cent to end at 19,727.05 points.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Wednesday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,245.86 crore, according to exchange data.

Indian-Origin UK Cop Fired For Use Of "Unreasonable Force" During Arrest

Indian-Origin UK Cop Fired For Use Of 'Unreasonable Force' During Arrest

It was alleged that Police Constable Dharni failed to use the appropriate force.

London:

An Indian-origin police officer has been dismissed from Scotland Yard after a misconduct hearing found she had used “unreasonable force” on duty while arresting a man in north London two years ago.

Police Constable (PC) Mandeep Dharni, attached to the Metropolitan Police’s North West Basic Command Unit (BCU) in the UK capital, appeared at a misconduct hearing last week related to the incident which occurred in September 2021 in a car park in Barnet.

It was alleged that PC Dharni failed to use the appropriate force and failed to act with authority, respect and courtesy when restraining a man, who was later charged with criminal damage and public order offences.

The hearing concluded Dharni had “breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour at the level of gross misconduct in relation to Authority, Respect and Courtesy, Use of Force and Discreditable Conduct after she used unreasonable force on duty during the arrest of a man”.

“All our officers know they will be held to account for any use of force while on duty,” said Chief Superintendent Dan Knowles, in charge of the Met’s policing in north-west London.

“On this occasion, PC Dharni went beyond what was acceptable or reasonable in the situation, especially as there were a number of other officers in attendance helping to detain the suspect,” he said.

A video of the incident was shared on social media and the officer was placed on restricted duties. The matter was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and they referred it back to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS). After hearing all the evidence, the misconduct panel found the allegations proven and she was dismissed without notice.

"How Low Will You Go?": BJP Attacks Sonia Gandhi On "Sanatan Dharma" Row

'How Low Will You Go?': BJP Attacks Sonia Gandhi On 'Sanatan Dharma' Row

Ravi Shankar Prasad also sought to explain Sanatan Dharma by quoting the Rig Veda.

New Delhi:

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad today questioned why was Congress leader Sonia Gandhi “silent” on the controversy surrounding remarks on ‘Sanatan Dharma’. Calling her alleged silence “an indication of approval” to what is being said by some Opposition leaders, the BJP leader asserted that his party was proud of the Sanatan tradition, which he said gives an opportunity for all to be equal, regardless of caste or community. The Congress has said it does not agree with the remarks, but Mrs Gandhi hasn’t yet made any individual comment.

“You are your party’s biggest leader, you have all the authority, and your silence on this makes the nation anxious,” Mr Prasad said.

The “silence on all else” but “open, shameless, unending criticism” of Sanatan is very painful. he added, referring to a recent remark by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, who blamed Sanatan Dharma for promoting division and discrimination among people and said it should be eradicated. “Sanatana (Dharma) ought to be eradicated like malaria, dengue and mosquito and not opposed,” he said.

DMK leader A Raja had also reportedly said ‘Sanatan Dharma’ should be compared to diseases such as AIDS and leprosy that have a social stigma attached to them.

“How low will you go, and for how long, just to get votes?” Mr Prasad said while addressing the media in Delhi and questioned if Sonia Gandhi ever felt like visiting the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Not even one big Congress leader has visited Ram Janmabhoomi yet, he alleged.

Ravi Shankar Prasad also sought to explain Sanatan Dharma by quoting the Rig Veda.

“Truth is one, wise men interpret it differently,” he said, quoting a couple from the holy scripture.

“That is your path of truth, you are free to walk on it; This is my path of truth and I will walk on it. Respect my path and I will respect yours because both our paths reach one truth which is the ultimate truth — eternal, perennial, individual. This is Sanatan.” he added.

“Why are you insulting Sanatan Dharma just for the sake of votes? Why this shameful denigration of Sanatan?” Mr Prasad repeated.

The Congress last week said it does not agree with the remarks of DMK leaders Udhayanidhi Stalin and A Raja on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ and asserted the party believed in “sarvadharma sambhav” (equal respect to all religions).

The opposition party also asserted that every single member of the INDIA alliance has immense respect for all faiths, communities and beliefs.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin had said his son had only spoken about “inhuman principles preached by Sanatan… that discriminate against Scheduled Castes, tribes and women” and “had no intention to offend any religion or religious beliefs”.
