Mexico City:

An alleged thief opened fire Tuesday outside Mexico City’s main international airport during a police chase that left two officers injured and briefly caused panic among travelers, authorities said.

One officer was shot in the leg and shoulder and another was run over while pursuing a man suspected of stealing goods in the airport’s customs area, the city’s security secretariat said.

The 27-year-old driver accelerated towards a passenger terminal of Mexico City International Airport, colliding with several vehicles before he was detained by police, it said.

Images shared on social media showed frightened employees and travelers sheltering behind airport counters.

The airport operator said that “no passenger or visitor was put at risk” during the incident.

While drug-related violence is widespread in Mexico, shootings in important public spaces are relatively rare in the capital, which has an official homicide rate well below the national average.

iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus With Dynamic Island Debut in India at This Price

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were launched globally on Tuesday at Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ launch event. Both handsets feature a few notable hardware upgrades over last year’s iPhone models. These include the company’s A16 Bionic chipset, Dynamic Island and a 48-megapixel primary camera — features that were available on last year’s Pro models. This year, all of Apple’s iPhone models are equipped with a USB Type-C port, making them the first handsets to arrive without Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging port.

iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus pricing and availability

iPhone 15 pricing in India starts at Rs. 79,900 while the iPhone 15 Plus is priced at Rs. 89,900 for the base 128GB variant. Both phones will be available in Black, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow colour options, according to the company. While pre-orders for the phones begin on September 15, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will go on sale on September 22. The handsets will be available with up to 512GB storage.

iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus specifications and features

The iPhone 15 is a dual SIM (Nano) smartphone that sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with Ceramic Shield material for additional protection. This year, Apple has also equipped the iPhone 15 with the Dynamic Island that was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. The display offers up to 2000 nits of peak brightness and the handset has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The iPhone 15 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display.

Unlike last year’s model, the primary camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models is a 48-megapixel wide angle camera with a 2um quad pixel sensor and an f/1.6 aperture. The smartphone is also equipped with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture and sensor shift stabilisation. The handset is equipped with a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera on the front, located in the new camera island for selfies and video chats.

Apple’s new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are equipped with the company’s A16 Bionic chip that powered last year’s iPhone 14 Pro models. The handsets are the first phones from Apple to feature a USB Type-C port (instead of Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector). There’s no word from the iPhone maker on the amount of RAM or battery capacities on both handsets, but we can expect to find out additional details through third-party sources over the coming weeks.

US sets record for natural catastrophes in 2023, data shows

The United States has set a record for costly natural disasters in 2023 that is yet to finish, with experts warning they are being turbo-charged by climate change.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported on Monday that the US experienced 23 separate weather and climate disasters, including storms to wildfires, which have each caused at least $1 billion in damage between January and August 2023.

“With approximately four months still left in the year, 2023 has already surpassed the previous record of 22 events seen in all of 2020,” NOAA said.

The NOAA report said this year’s disasters killed more than 250 people and caused over $57.6 billion in damages.

The report didn’t include Hurricane Hilary which impacted parts of California and the Southwest in August as the damage caused by the storm is still being reviewed.

“These record-breaking numbers, during a year that is on track to be one of the hottest ever, are sobering and the latest confirmation of a worsening trend in costly disasters, many of which bear the undeniable fingerprints of climate change,” Rachel Cletus of the Union of Concerned Scientists said in a statement.

According to NOAA, this meteorological summer (June 1 through August 31) was the US’ 15th-hottest on record as the average temperature for the contiguous US was 73.0 degrees, 1.6 degrees above average.

NOAA has begun tracking billion-dollar disasters since 1980. Over the past five years, the US has averaged 18 billion-dollar disasters a year.

Being the largest emitter worldwide, the US is historically responsible for climate change.

A Carbon Brief analysis shows that since 1850 the US has released more than 509Gt of CO2 and is responsible for the largest share of historical emissions, with some 20% of the global total, which is not only threatening the country but the entire Earth.

Kim Jong Un Says His Visit Shows "Strategic Importance" Of Russia Ties

Kim Jong Un Says His Visit Shows 'Strategic Importance' Of Russia Ties

Kim Jong Un arrived at the border town of Khasan in Russia early Tuesday morning and met Vladimir Putin.

Seoul:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said his first visit to Russia in nearly four years was a clear show of the “strategic importance” of the two countries’ relations, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday.

“Kim Jong Un said that his visit to the Russian Federation … is a clear manifestation of the stand of the WPK and the government of the DPRK prioritizing the strategic importance of DPRK-Russia relations,” the report said.

The DPRK stands for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, while the WPK is the Workers’ Party of Korea, the sole ruling party in the reclusive country.

Kim’s visit to Russia marks his first foreign visit after the worldwide public health crisis, KCNA said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kim arrived at the border town of Khasan in Russia early Tuesday morning, state media confirmed, and was greeted by senior officials from Moscow and local areas at the train station.

His visit seeks to put DPRK-Russia relations of friendship and cooperation on a “fresh higher level,” the report said.

Mental Illness No Bar For Medical Degree, Medical Council Tells Court

Mental Illness No Bar For Medical Degree, Medical Council Tells Court

New Delhi:

The National Medical Council told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that diagnosis of mental illness can no longer be a bar for pursuing MBBS course and such aspirants may be considered for quota benefits in future after “better methods of disability assessment” are devised.

On May 18,  the NMC, which regulates medical education in the country, was asked by the top court to set up a panel of domain experts to examine a plea for evolving modes of disability assessment of students having mental illnesses, special learning disorder and autism spectrum disorder for quota in admission to MBBS course.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra took note of the submissions of lawyer Gaurav Kumar Bansal, appearing for a MBBS aspirant, that several countries are not only permitting persons having mental illnesses to pursue medical education but also granting reservation in admissions.

The court permitted Mr Bansal to amend the petition to challenge the fresh guidelines of the NMC on the issue of admissions of persons with mental illness in MBBS course and non-grant of quota to them for the time being under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.

The bench, however, acknowledged that the NMC set up the committee of domain experts and came out with some guidelines after examining the issue.

An eight-member expert panel discussed the issue of admission in MBBS course under the disabilities law in case of special learning disability, autistic specified disorder and mental illness, the counsel for the NMC said.

“On thorough consideration of the recommendations received from the expert members in… meetings, the Under Graduate Medical Education Board reaches to a conclusion that in respect of mental illness, ‘the diagnosis of Mental Illness can no longer be a bar for eligibility to pursue medical education (MBBS) provided the candidate falls in the merit list in competitive entrance examination ie. NEET-UG’,” the NMC said in its report.

“Since the benefits of reservation/quota are not determinable under the present available methods of assessment, hence the quoted italic statement in the earlier disability notification dated May 13, 2019 — ‘However the benefit of reservation quota may be considered in future after developing better methods of disability assessment’ — shall remain valid,” the council said.

The NMC said such candidates claiming to have been suffering from mental illness are being considered under “Non-PwD” (outside the disabilities law) category for the purpose of taking admission in MBBS course.

Taking the report on record, the bench said it will consider the issue after four weeks.

The top court was hearing the petition by Vishal Gupta, who was denied reservation in admission to MBBS course under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act on the ground that his mental disability was 55 per cent rendering him ineligible for securing admission in a medical college.

Under the Act, if the certifying authority certifies that the disability of a person is not less than 40 per cent then he or she is said to have the “benchmark disability”, and in that condition, the candidate cannot get the benefit of reservation in admission.

The bench had said a person suffering from special learning and autism spectrum disorders cannot be treated so shabbily and denied quota benefits under the statute.

“We are of the considered view that the aspects which have been raised in these proceedings required to be considered by an expert body having domain knowledge.

“We, therefore, direct the National Medical Commission to treat the grievance of the petitioner in these proceedings as a representation and to consider the grievance at an appropriate level while dealing with the regulations on graduate medical education,” the apex court ordered on May 18.

Mr Gupta, in his petition, said his mental illness disability, according to the certificate issued by Lady Hardinge Medical College and Associated Hospitals, was 55 per cent and he was being discriminated against.

The authorities were denying Mr Gupta the opportunity to pursue the medical science course because his mental illness is more than 40 per cent and they were also not providing him the benefit of quota, available to persons with disabilities under the law, to MBBS aspirants like him, the plea said.

Drug Lord El Chapo's Wife To Be Freed From US Jail, Say Authorities

Drug Lord El Chapo's Wife To Be Freed From US Jail, Say Authorities

The U.S.-born 34-year-old Emma Coronel was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021.

Washington:

Emma Coronel, the wife of imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, will be freed in Los Angeles on Wednesday following her arrest in 2021 on drug trafficking charges, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

The U.S.-born 34-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to three counts of helping the Sinaloa drug cartel, including conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings.

She also admitted to acting as a courier between Guzman, who led the cartel, and other organization members while he was being held in Mexico’s Altiplano prison after his 2014 arrest.

Her sentencing judge said Coronel had quickly accepted responsibility and agreed to forfeit nearly $1.5 million of proceeds from her criminal activity to the U.S. government, and her three-year sentence was later reduced.

The Bureau of Prisons said on its website it would release Coronel on Wednesday from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles, without giving further details.

Meanwhile, Guzman is serving a life sentence in U.S. after being extradited there in 2017 following two escapes from Mexican maximum-security prisons, once by digging a mile-long tunnel from his cell.

Coronel’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It is not clear whether she faces charges for drug trafficking or other crimes inside Mexico.

Coronel was also given a further two years of supervised release.

Coronel has two daughters with Guzman, whom she met when she was a young beauty queen and married in 2007 at age 18.

Apple Bows To EU And Unveils iPhone With USB-C Charger

Apple Bows To EU And Unveils iPhone With USB-C Charger

Apple on Tuesday unveiled a new iPhone 15 with a 48-megapixel camera

Brussels:

Apple unveiled its new iPhone lineup on Tuesday, with its Lightning charger ports replaced on the newest models by a universal charger after a tussle with the European Union.

The European bloc is insisting that all phones and other small devices must be compatible with the USB-C charging cables from the end of next year, a move it says will reduce waste and save money for consumers.

The firm had long argued that its cable was more secure than USB-C chargers, which are already deployed by Apple on other devices and widely used by rivals including the world’s biggest smartphone maker Samsung.

“USB-C has become a universally accepted standard. So we’re bringing USB-C to iPhone 15,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of iPhone marketing at a launch event.

The release comes as Apple faces declining sales of iPhones, with higher prices pushing customers to delay switching to newer models.

The firm is also caught up in diplomatic turbulence between the United States and China, with reports saying the communist government is banning civil servants from using its phones.

Easier repair

Like any other company, Apple would prefer to boast about shiny new features rather than new charging ports. However, analysts agree that the switch to USB-C was going to be the main headline.

EU policymakers said the rule would simplify the lives of Europeans and do away with a mountain of obsolete chargers.

“The cable change may give consumers pause, but within a generation, they will get over it: They won’t have a choice,” said Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart.

Along with rolling improvements to iPhone cameras and chips, Apple also said that the iPhone 15, which includes four varieties, would have internal components that simplify repair and a new frame that allows the back glass to be easily replaced.

The openness to repair is an unexpected turnaround.

Apple last month said it was endorsing the passage of a California law requiring major gadget makers to enable people to fix their devices without taking them back to companies.

Apple also unveiled new models of the Apple Watch that would respond to a tap of the index finger and thumb to start and stop calls or other key functions.

Sales of iPhones in the recently ended quarter lagged analyst estimates.

Apple suffered a 2.4 percent drop in iPhone sales, which account for nearly half of the total revenues.

Apple shares were battered last week following reports of significant Chinese restrictions on iPhones at government offices and state-backed entities.

“China is a very important market for Apple, so any negative sentiment by the Chinese government toward Apple is concerning,” analyst Greengart told AFP.

Apple reported $15.8 billion in revenues from China in the most recent quarter, nearly 20 percent of total revenues. Executives pointed to the uptick in China sales in a period when overall sales fell.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives estimated that a Chinese government ban would affect less than 500,000 iPhones of roughly 45 million projected to be sold in the country in the next year.

“We believe despite the loud noise Apple has seen massive share gains in the Chinese smartphone market,” Ives said.
