India seamer Jaydev Unadkat and spinner Jayant Yadav made impressive debuts in the English County circuit, taking five-wicket hauls for Sussex and Middlesex respectively. Unadkat, who could be back in contention for selection in the Indian Test side later this year for the tour of South Africa, took an overall nine wickets for Sussex against Leicestershire to help them win by just 15 runs in a Division Two match.

The left-arm seamer took 3 for 23 in the first innings and returned with figures of 32.4-6-94-6 in the second essay to help Sussex not only record a narrow win but also revive their hopes of promotion into Division One.

India batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who is also Sussex’s captain, scored 26 and 23 in the game and also took a spectacular catch to dismiss Leicestershire opener Rishi Patel.

Yadav, playing in a Division One game for Middlesex against Lancashire, toiled for his five-wicket haul as he returned with figures of 33-4-131-5 in a drawn game at Manchester.

Meanwhile, also making his County debut this season, leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took an overall five wickets — 3/63 and 2/43 — for Kent against Nottinghamshire in a Division One game at Canterbury.

Luxury Ship Charging $33,000 A Person Awaits Rescue In Greenland's Arctic

A Covid Challenge For Luxury Ship Stranded In Arctic With 206 Onboard

A couple of people on board the ship have tested positive for Covid-19

A luxury cruise ship carrying more than 200 people is set to be stranded for days in a remote area of Greenland’s Arctic after getting wedged in the muddy seabed.

Three attempts in as many days to free the Ocean Explorer have failed, Denmark’s military’s Joint Arctic Command said, after a fishing boat had to give up pulling the large vessel out at high tide on Wednesday. The passengers are not in danger, according to the authority.

The ship, with passengers primarily from Australia, became stuck at about noon on Monday in the Alpefjord, roughly 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) northeast of Greenland’s capital, Nuuk. The closest navy vessel available to help with rescue efforts has had to reduce its speed due to bad weather and is expected to reach the scene Friday evening, later than originally expected.

Troops from Denmark’s Arctic Special Forces elite unit Sirius, which patrols the vast area by dog sleds, have visited the ship by boat and confirmed that all passengers are safe. In neighboring Iceland, the coast guard is on standby with a vessel if needed, local authorities said.

The vessel’s plight underscores the hazards of tourism in Arctic areas, where distances are vast and help often days away. Still, the majestic scenery of icebergs and the chance to spot rare creatures, such as polar bears, attract growing numbers of tourists.

The ship had at least twice tried to use high tide to float clear on its own, but the mud – a mix of sediment, sand and silt left by a nearby glacier – is creating a strong suction that’s holding it in place.

The Joint Arctic Command has also told another cruise ship in the vicinity of the Ocean Explorer to stay in the area in case the situation escalates. A Danish naval ship already at sea off the coast of southwest Greenland was diverted and was initially expected to reach the area by Friday morning, but that has now been delayed by several hours.

“The crew and passengers are in a difficult situation, but given the circumstances, the atmosphere on the ship is good and everyone on board is doing well,” the Joint Arctic Command said in its statement, citing reports from the Sirius troops. The patrol will stay on land in the area so they can reach the ship within 90 minutes.

A couple of people on board the ship have tested positive for Covid-19 and have isolated, the Sydney Morning Herald reported, citing passengers at the ship. No one is in a serious condition, the people told the newspaper. The Joint Arctic Command didn’t comment on the report.

The passengers and crew on board number 206, according to the command, and local media in Greenland have reported that about 170 are paying passengers, with rest making up the crew.

The ship is stuck offshore Greenland’s national park, the world’s largest, covering 972,000 square kilometers (375,000 square miles). It’s a protected area with animals including polar bears, musk oxen and walrus. There are no human inhabitants except for workers at weather stations and the small unit of Denmark’s Arctic Special Forces.

Greenland has extensive home rule but is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

“All passengers, the expedition team and crew onboard are safe and well,” Aurora Expeditions, the ship’s Sydney-based operator, said in a statement. “Importantly, there is no immediate danger to themselves, the vessel, or the surrounding environment.”

Aurora Expeditions specializes in polar trips, including a 30-day cruise costing more than $33,000 (A$51,000) per person for viewing wildlife, such as polar bears, beluga whales and walruses, according to the its website.

Greenland, like many Arctic countries, is becoming increasingly concerned about the logistics of mounting expensive rescue operations in remote areas.

The number of cruise ships around the world’s largest island has jumped 50% in the past year to 600, Brian Jensen of the Joint Arctic Command said by phone. Last year, the Joint Arctic Command did one medical evacuation and so far this year it has done five, he said.

23 Companies Show Interest In This ISRO Tech, Only One Will Get it

23 Companies Show Interest In This ISRO Tech, Only One Will Get it

The interest comes after the success of ISRO’s missions, including Chandrayaan-3.

Bengaluru:

Seeing the success of ISRO’s numerous missions, as many as 23 companies have evinced interest in acquiring the Indian space agency’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle technology, a top official said on Thursday.

The Chairman of Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) Pawan K Goenka said that they are keen to see how the private sector uses the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology.

“There has been a tremendous response, 23 companies have (so far) shown interest in applying for this technology. Of course, only one of them will get it,” he said.

IN-SPACe, an autonomous nodal agency under the Department of Space (DOS), formed in 2020 to promote, enable, authorise and supervise non-government entities (NGEs) to undertake space activities, had in July floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) for transfer of technology (ToT) of SSLV with the last date to respond to it being September 25.

“Technology transfer is something we are working on very aggressively, because we really want to see how ISRO’s technology is leveraged by private sector. A lot is happening in that area and the biggest one is of course SSLV technology transfer, where we are transferring the launch vehicle lock, stock, and barrel completely to the private sector,” Mr Goenka said.

Addressing the inaugural function of the International Conference on Space here, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he said, this is perhaps the first example where an agency anywhere in the world has transferred the full design of a launch vehicle to the private sector.

Noting that there are 42 applications or space technologies to be transferred to the private sector, Mr Goenka said ISRO is working very closely with IN-SPACe and vice versa to get the process going, and 19 technologies are ready for transfer.

IN-SPACe is working on the manufacturing aspect with state governments, he said, adding that the idea is to try and get all-inclusive infrastructure, with a plug-and-play kind of setup for the industries focusing on manufacturing, where infrastructure will be provided by the state government.

“We are in the process of signing an MoU with one state and we are working with another state to make that happen,” Mr Goenka added.

He also said currently India’s Space economy is at $ 8 billion and the vision is to take it to USD 44 billion by 2033. “Lot of work is being done towards this and everyone will have to play an important role for this,” he said.

A ‘Catalogue of Indian Standards for Space Industry’, developed by INSPACe and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and containing 15 standards that will be recommended to private players to follow, was also released on the occasion.

Australian High Commission Deputy High Commissioner Sarah Storey, during her address,  reiterated her country’s commitment to collaborate and partner with India in the space sector, while Australian Space Agency Chief Enrico Palermo, through a video message at the conference, highlighted common areas of interest for both countries to collaborate.

Both of them lauded India’s achievements in the space sector, particularly the Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya L1 missions.

Jawan Dialogue Writer Says SRK's "Bete Ko Haath…" Line Wasn't In Script

Jawan Dialogue Writer Reveals Shah Rukh Khan's 'Bete Ko Haath Lagane Se Pehle...' Line Was Not In The Script

Mumbai:

Shah Rukh Khan’s now famous dialogue “Bete ko hath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar” (Before touching the son, deal with the father) in Jawan wasn’t part of the script initially, says the film’s dialogue writer Sumit Arora.

The dialogue had instantly caught the attention of Shah Rukh’s fans when it was first shown in action-entertainer’s trailer that was launched a week before its release on September 7. Many fans on social media have linked the dialogue, which was spoken by the superstar’s character Vikram Rathore in the climax, as a response to the arrest of his son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case in October 2021. Aryan was granted bail after spending 25 days in jail and later given a clean chit.

Detailing how the dialogue became a part of the movie, Arora said it was incorporated in the film on the day of the shoot.

“It’s a story that will make you believe in the magic of movie making. That line was never there in our draft originally. The ‘moment’ where SRK sir’s character says the line was always there and we all knew that it is a powerful moment even without a dialogue. But while shooting, it was felt that there should be a line, that this guy should say something,” the writer said in a statement.

“I was there on the set, so I was called in, and the first words that came out of my mouth given the situation were: ‘bete ko hath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar‘. It felt like the most obvious and most apt thing he should say at that moment. It just fits (in). Director Atlee and SRK sir both felt it’s correct and the shot was taken,” he added.

Directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee, the movie features Shah Rukh in the role of Vikram Rathore and his son Azad. The movie highlights various social and political issues through the story.  Arora said the team didn’t expect that the dialogue would resonate with people in such a way.

“The way SRK sir delivered it gave us goosebumps. But we never thought that that line would become such a huge hit and would resonate with people in this way. As a writer, you can only write a line but its destiny goes on to write itself,” he said.

Arora’s upcoming projects include Kabir Khan’s Chandu Champion featuring Kartik Aaryan, and Raj Nidimoru & Krishna-directed Indian version of “Citadel”.

Jawan, a pan-India film, also stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi as well as Deepika Padukone in a special appearance. It was released worldwide on September 7 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

It has amassed over Rs 600 crore gross at the worldwide box office.

A Red Chillies Entertainment presentation, Jawan is produced by Gauri Khan and co-produced by Gaurav Verma.

Jagan seeks Jaishankar’s intervention to probe Jahnavi’s death

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has sought the intervention of External Affairs minister S. Jaishankar to probe the death of Kandula Jahnavi who died in a road accident on January 23 this year.

Jahnavi who belongs to Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, was pursuing Master’s degree in Information Systems from the Seattle campus of Northeaster University.

In a letter addressed to Jaishankar on Thursday, Jagan while seeking an independent and thorough investigation into the circumstances into the unfortunate accident, said it was of utmost importance that the truth be uncovered and justice be served. The state government had, upon knowing the information, immediately contacted her family in India and also the Telugu association which was facilitating the arrangements and coordinated the efforts towards mortal remains transporation from the USA to India, he recalled, and added that it had arranged an ambulance service from the Hyderabad airport to the native place of the deceased in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan also referred to a video of the police officer who is investigating the death of Jahnavi which was released by the Seattle police department `wherein it showed that an officer was ridiculing the death along with passing comments of limiting the value of the life of an innocent student’. “This type of inhumane behaviour of such officers against non-Americans should be condemned and strict action should be recommended against erring police officer to instil a sense of confidence and assurance among the Indians in America,” he stated.

While requesting Jaishankar to instruct the concerned to take up the issue with the Ambassador of the USA to India, the Chief Minister hoped that he would treat the matter with the urgency and gravity it deserved, and that justice would be swiftly and fairly administered to the family of Jahnavi.

Putin accepts formal invitation by Kim Jong-un to visit North Korea

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted a formal invitation by Kim Jung-un to visit North Korea for more talks on their “far-reaching plan” to promote a deeper partnership, as the North Korean leader continues his tour of eastern Russia following his summit with Putin.

Kim, who came to Russia by his armored train on Tuesday, attended a face-to-face summit with Putin at the Vostochny Cosmodrome space center in Russia’s far-eastern Amur region on Wednesday to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest.

At the end of their four-hour summit, the first in four years, Kim invited Putin to visit North Korea at “a convenient time.” However, no timeline for their next meeting has been set.

“Putin accepted the invitation with pleasure and reaffirmed his will to invariably carry forward the history and tradition of the Russia-DPRK friendship,” North Korean state news agency KCNA said on Thursday, using the acronym for the country’s official name.

According to KCNA, Kim said that bilateral ties between North Korea and Russia have reached a new level with their meeting, expressing his willingness to foster stable, future-oriented relations for the next 100 years.

“We are confident that the Russian army and people will inevitably attain victory in the sacred struggle to punish the evil crowd, which claims the right to hegemony based on the illusion of expansionism, a struggle to create the stability needed for development,” Kim said, without naming Ukraine.

The rare summit has raised concern in the United States and particularly Ukraine that Kim might reach a deal with Putin to sell weapons to Russia and in return acquire needed military technology for the North.

North Korea has made space technology a priority. Kim in the past had stressed the role of military satellites as a means to protect national safety and territorial stability.

Washington claims that it had intelligence data that the talks between Putin and Kim on a weapons deal were “actively advancing,” while the Kremlin says Kim’s visit will cover “bilateral relations, the situation in the region and in the global arena.”

The US State Department has already warned that the US “will not hesitate” to impose additional sanctions on Moscow and Pyongyang in case of such a deal.

“We have taken a number of actions already to sanction entities that brokered arms sales between North Korea and Russia and we won’t hesitate to impose additional actions if appropriate,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

“When you see what looks to be increased cooperation and probably military transfers, that is quite troubling and would potentially be in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions,” he added.

Both Russia and North Korea are already under harsh sanctions by the US, the former for its war on Ukraine and the latter for its years-long ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

The North Korean leader’s previous trip abroad was to Russia to meet Putin after the collapse of bilateral denuclearization talks with the then-US president, Donald Trump.

In Club vs Country Conundrum, Chhetri Gives Priority To National Duty

In the club versus country conundrum over the Hangzhou Asian Games, Indian football turned out to be the loser but Sunil Chhetri, arguably the country’s greatest footballer ever, rose above all these and gave precedence to national duty. The 39-year-old talisman, who has created seemingly unsurmountable national records in his 18-year-long international career, raised his hand and decided to lead a rag-tag national team after many Indian Super League clubs refused to release their players.

Thirteen players, including key defender Sandesh Jhingan and number one goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, from the original 22-member squad announced last month were not released by their respective ISL clubs.

A hapless All India Football Federation (AIFF), after hectic parleys, was able to stitch a second-rung 18-member team made up mostly of inexperienced players with Chhetri being the lone notable face.

“He (Chhetri) is such a reputed player and it’s not a full strength team. But he stuck his neck out and said he wanted to go for the sake of the country and he’s ready for the Asian Games. Hats off to him,” an AIFF official told PTI.

“We knew that he would rise above all these and would give the call of the nation priority and he did just that.” Chhetri’s club Bengaluru FC had six players in the initial 22, including Gurpreet, and it released two players, the other one being Rohit Danu.

“Of course, his (Chhetri’s) club said yes and released him. So, credit to Bengaluru FC also. The club made the sacrifice of releasing its best player when it is not a FIFA window,” the official said.

The clubs are, however, are not bound to release the players as the Asian Games did not fall in the FIFA international match window.

Football competition in Asian Games is basically under-23 affair with three over-aged players permitted per team.

This will be Chhetri’s third Asian Games, the first being the 2006 edition as a 22-year-old under English coach Bob Houghton. The team was led by Bhaichung Bhutia, who was included as on the over-aged players. India drew with Hong Kong (1-1), beat Maldives (2-1) and lost to Iran (0-2) to crash out in the group stage.

In the 2014 edition in Incheon, Korea, Chhetri captained India after being included as one of the above-23 players permitted. India again ended their campaign in the group stage after losing to UAE (0-5) and Jordan (0-2).

Chhetri has played for India 142 times and has scored 92 goals, the most by an Indian. He is also currently the third most prolific scorer in international football among active players, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Meesi.

He recently became a father but despite that he has chosen to travel to China for the Asian Games.

“Chhetri also chose to make the sacrifice of leaving his newborn baby and wife to attend to the call of national duty, it does not happen to too many players,” the AIFF official said.

Chhetri was not in the Indian team that took part in the Kings Cup in Thailand as he needed to be with his wife and newborn baby.

The Indian team, which is expected to leave for China on Saturday, begins its Asian Games campaign with a match against China on September 19, followed by games against Bangladesh (September 21) and Myanmar (September 24).

The top two teams from the six groups will make it to the pre-quarterfinals, with four best-ranked third-placed sides also qualifying.
