‘Wiring Iran’s unfrozen funds to Qatar to finish next week’

Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani (L) and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian held phone talks on Thursday.

Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, has said that the process of wiring Iran’s unfrozen funds in South Korea to bank accounts in Qatar under a prisoner exchange deal with the US will compete next week.

Al-Thani made the remarks in a phone conversation on Thursday with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, according to Iran’s official news agency the IRNA.

Qatar has been a mediator in talks that led to a prisoner exchange deal between Iran and the United States that was made public on August 10.

The deal involves the release of five prisoners from each side as well as the unfreezing of some $6 billion worth of Iranian funds that had remained inaccessible since 2018 in two banks in South Korea because of US sanctions.

The process for transferring the funds took more than a month mainly because there was a daily cap on the amount of exchange possible for Iranian funds that were in South Korean won.

Under the deal, the Swiss National Bank carried out exchange transactions and Qatar paid for banking fees, according to unconfirmed details of the deal published in media reports earlier this week.

During his phone calls with Al-Thani on Thursday, Amirabdollahian hailed Qatar for efforts that led to the release of Iranian prisoners in the US and the unfreezing of funds in South Korea.

It was reiterated in the phone call that both side of the prisoner exchange deal are ready to swap prisoners on the day agreed in the deal mediated by Qatar.

Iran has already released five US prisoners subject to the deal to house arrest while the country’s mission in the United Nations has also revealed the names of five Iranians planned to be released from US jails.

From PoK to Asia Cup, Zaman Makes ODI Debut With Malinga-like Action

The endless chain of fast bowlers that Pakistan has produced over the years has been the envy point of other cricketing nations. Zaman Khan is the latest to join that illustrious line. But there is a slight difference to Zaman. Perhaps, he is the first slinger fast bowler a la Lasith Malinga to play for Pakistan in international cricket. Zaman was drafted into Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad on Wednesday after Naseem Shah was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

Now, the cricketing world might be engaged in a frantic Google search to know more about Zaman, but the 21-year-old had to waddle through layers of difficulties to even start playing cricket.

The ever-endearing rags to riches story, if you may.

As it happens with many other Pakistan pacers, Zaman too cut his teeth in tape ball cricket in Mirpur, a small village in PoK.

Coming from a family of daily wage workers, Zaman was drawn to cricket from a very young age and found backing from his household to pursue his dream.

“My father and brothers are labourers. I started playing cricket after watching other boys in my street playing that sport. I used to skip classes at Madrasa to play cricket. One of my relatives told me to take part in an under-16 trial in my village after seeing how fast I was bowling. Fortunately, I got selected and my journey started,” Zaman said in a video posted by PCB.

Zaman took the next step when he was picked in the Pakistan under-19 team to tour Australia, an experience he termed as an eye-opener.

The pacer’s first big stage experience came when he was picked by Lahore Qalandars for Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022.

It was cathartic for him to rub shoulders with top stars of his country such as Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.

Zaman made a mighty impression in his first PSL season, taking 18 wickets from 13 matches to finish third on the wicket-takers’ chart behind Afridi (20) and leg-spinner Shadab Khan (19).

His effort had played a big role in Lahore winning their maiden PSL title that year.

“When we saw him in the Kashmir T20 league, we wanted to draft him into the side. He was quick and had wonderful yorker, and we thought that he could be a good fit into our team,” said Waqas Ahmed, the bowling coach of Qalandars.

His observation was not far from truth as Zaman made his presence felt in PSL 2023 as well, grabbing 15 wickets from 13 matches.

It helped the Qalandars to retain their title, the first team in the PSL to do so.

“He was a bit raw when he came to us. He has that roundarm action. He was quick alright but he tended to stray the ball down the leg side or way outside the off-stump.

“We worked on the accuracy factor at nets and he is a hardworking boy and a quick learner,” said Ahmed.

“Since he has this ability to bowl fast full-length deliveries, we always wanted to use him at the death,” Ahmed added.

Zaman’s skill was visible when he defended 12 runs in the last over of the PSL 2023 final against Multan Sultans on March 18.

Six days later Zaman made his Pakistan debut in a T20I against Afghanistan at Sharjah.

When Pakistan needed a replacement for Naseem, team director Mickey Arthur, a man who has a keen eye for talent, immediately wanted Zaman in the squad.

Zaman was handed his ODI debut too against Sri Lanka here.

But more than that, it will be a golden opportunity for him to learn the nuances of his craft from an accomplished performer like Morne Morkel, Pakistan’s bowling coach.

“I am super excited to work with a talent like Zaman. I followed him a little bit on TV during the PSL, but it is important for him to find his feet in a big game (against Sri Lanka), a must win for us.

“He is a fine talent. I want to connect with himl, build that relationship, and develop him because he is a match winner,” said Morkel.

Iraq Sentences Terrorist To Death Over 2014 Pilgrim Bombing

Baghdad, Iraq:

An Iraqi court on Thursday sentenced an Islamic State group member to death after convicting him of involvement in a 2014 suicide bombing that killed 17 pilgrims, the judiciary said.

The attack in Taji district north of Baghdad targeted a “mawkeb”, one of the many stalls providing free food and drinks to pilgrims during Shiite Muslim festivals.

The pilgrims had been heading on foot to Samarra, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad, to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Hassan al-Askari, one of 12 imams revered by Iraq’s Shiite majority.

A criminal court in Baghdad on Thursday sentenced “a terrorist to death for the explosion of a mawkeb in 2014” during the pilgrimage in Samarra, the judiciary said on its website.

The statement did not name the convict but said he had “filmed the tragedy because he was a member of the terrorist groups of Daesh,” using the Arabic acronym for IS.

The convict has the right to appeal the verdict.

After rapidly taking over large swathes of territory in Iraq and neighbouring Syria, IS saw its self-proclaimed “caliphate” collapse under successive offensives in both countries.

Iraqi authorities declared “victory” over the Sunni Muslim extremist group at the end of 2017, but jihadist cells continue to sporadically launch attacks, particularly on military and police personnel in remote areas of central and northern Iraq.

In late August, three people were hanged in Iraq after being convicted over an IS attack that killed 323 people in Baghdad in July 2016.

Amnesty International said Iraq was the world’s sixth biggest executioner last year, with at least 11 carried out.

More than 41 death sentences were issued in 2022, and more than 45 people were executed in 2020, according to the London-based human rights group.

Bengal Man Charged Over "Terrorists, Genocide" Posts On Manipur

Bengal Man Charged Over 'Terrorists, Genocide' Posts On Manipur

Manipur Police filed an FIR against Bengal resident Arijit Biswas over posts on X

Imphal:

A man from West Bengal’s Dakshin Dinajpur has been charged by the Manipur Police for alleged defamatory posts on social media against the state government, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The accused, Arijit Biswas, allegedly posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Mr Shah and Mr Singh belong to a “terrorist organisation”, according to the first information report (FIR) filed by an Imphal resident.

The complainant alleged Mr Biswas, a resident of Balurghat, posted on X that the Manipur government has been “sponsoring” ethnic violence and carrying out “genocide”.

A copy of the FIR has been sent to the Commissioner (Home) for further action, people with direct knowledge of the matter told NDTV on Thursday. The charges have been filed under several sections linked to promoting enmity between communities on religious and race lines, including a non-bailable one, of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police will send summons to Mr Biswas to join investigation, people familiar with the matter said, adding a team could be sent to arrest him if he refuses to cooperate in the investigation.

“The accused by using social media platforms as tools propagated misleading statements to destabilise a democratically elected government, disturb communal harmony by creating enmity among communities, and defame the state government and one particular community,” the complainant said in the FIR, a copy of which NDTV has seen.

“The accused intentionally made this false propaganda/misleading statements to continue and escalate the violence in Manipur. His unlawful activities are a threat not only to the security of the state but also to the nation,” the complainant said.

This is the latest police case filed in the state capital Imphal over alleged defamatory content. The Editors’ Guild of India also faces two FIRs over its report on the ethnic clashes, published by a three-member, crowdfunded team after staying in Manipur for four days, which the state government said was “false, fabricated and sponsored”.

The police in northeast states have, in some sensitive cases, sent their personnel to arrest people outside the state and bring them in. Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested from the state’s Banaskantha district by a team of the Assam Police in April last year over his tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was brought to Assam to face trial. He was later released on bail.

EC calls rival factions of NCP for hearing on October 6: Sources

New Delhi: The Election Commission has called rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for a personal hearing on October 6, sources said on Thursday.

A faction led by Ajit Pawar had rebelled against NCP leader Sharad Pawar and moved the poll panel staking claim over the party name and symbol.

After due consideration of the totality of information available on record, the commission has arrived at the conclusion that there are two rival groups in the Nationalist Congress Party — one led by Sharad Pawar and the other by Ajit Pawar — the sources pointed out.

They said that since each group is claiming to be the party, the matter required a substantive determination by the commission under Para 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order 1968.

Accordingly, the poll panel has directed both the groups to remain present in person or through their authorised representative for a personal hearing in the matter on October 6.

The commission will now commence the substantive hearing under Para 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order, they said, citing rules.

Two days before rebelling against uncle Sharad Pawar to join the Maharashtra government in early July, NCP leader Ajit Pawar had approached the Election Commission on June 30 staking claim to the party name as well as symbol and subsequently also declared himself as the party president with support of 40 lawmakers.

Recently, the Sharad Pawar-led faction had told the Election Commission that there was no dispute in the party, except that a few mischievous individuals have defected from the organisation for their personal ambitions, a reference to the rebel group headed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Russia expels two US diplomats, summons American ambassador

Russia has summoned the US ambassador to Moscow and expelled two American embassy diplomats accused of working with a Russian spy.

In a statement on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Ambassador Lynne Tracy, telling her that first secretary Jeffrey Sillin and second secretary David Bernstein must leave Russia within a week.

Declaring the two diplomats “persona non grata,” the ministry said the pair had allegedly worked with a Russian national accused of collaborating for a foreign state.

“The named people conducted illegal activity, maintaining contact with Russian citizen R. Shonov, accused of ‘confidential cooperation’ with a foreign state,” the ministry said.

Robert Shonov, according to Reuters, was employed by the US Consulate General in the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok for more than 25 years up 2021, when Moscow prevented the local staff from working for the US mission.

“The US ambassador was told that Sillin and Bernstein must leave the territory of Russia within seven days under the status of persona non grata,” the ministry added.

Back in May, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested Shonov, accusing him of passing information about the war in Ukraine to the two American diplomats. Washington slammed Moscow for the move, accusing Russia of using “increasingly repressive laws against its own citizens.”

Last month, the US also rejected the allegation against its embassy staff, accusing Moscow of attempting to intimidate and harass US employees.

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday, however, said Shonov had been paid to complete tasks aimed at harming Russia’s national security, vowing that any US embassy interference in Russia’s domestic affairs would be suppressed.

Tensions between Russia and the US have been worsening for years and both sides have expelled diplomatic staff in retaliatory moves.

In February, the US expelled 12 diplomats from Russia’s New York-based mission to the UN, accusing the staff of engaging in espionage activities. Moscow condemned the move as hostile and a gross violation of the commitments by the US.

Watch: After Kohli, Rohit, SL Rookie Gets Babar Too, Leaves Star Shocked

Dunith Wellalage had a great outing against Indian in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match on Tuesday. He accounted for the wickets of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya. On Thursday, the spinner got another big wicket in Babar Azam. In the 16th over, Babar got stumped by Dunith Wellalage. It was a stunning delivery from the spinner as he tossed it up around off stump. Babar moved forward, only to find the ball pitching and turning away. Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis made not mistake and broke the stumps. Replays showed that Babar’s back foot was in the air when the bails lit up. The Pakistan captain was shocked.

The crucial Asia Cup Super 4 match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan was further reduced to a 42 overs-a-side affair following another rain interruption at the R Premadasa Stadium on Thursday. Pakistan were stuttering at 130 for five in 27.4 overs against hosts Sri Lanka when rain stopped play.

Mohammad Nawaz (12) was dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana on the last ball before the break. Mohammad Rizwan (22) was at the middle. Earlier, a delayed start had curtailed the contest to a 45-overs-per-side affair.

The match is a virtual semifinal as the winner of the game will play against India in the final on Sunday. Both teams are on two points each. However, if the match is washed out, Sri Lanka will qualify for the summit clash owing to a better Net Run Rate.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam recently claimed the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for the third time, bagging the award for August 2023. Babar who currently sits comfortably at the summit of the ODI rankings continued to impress with bat in the month of August.

His richness of form was reflected in his performances as he struck two fifties and a century. In Pakistan’s ODI series against Afghanistan, Babar struck two fifties in the final two matches.

He brought up a 118-run stand with Imam-ul-Haq in the second ODI that laid the foundation for a thrilling last-over finale. Babar contributed 53 runs with the bat and was backed by Imam (91 runs) and the lower order.

Babar didn’t stop there, he replicated his performance in the 3rd ODI with his exquisite knock of 60. His sublime batting skills were on display in the Asia Cup opener against Nepal. Babar’s knock of 151 made him the first captain in the Asia Cup to score 150 or more than that.

“I am delighted to be named ICC Player of the Month for August 2023. The past month has been extraordinary for my team and I have put some terrific performances. With the Asia Cup coming to Pakistan after such a long time, it was great to play in front of the passionate and cricket-loving crowds of Multan and Lahore. That I scored my second ODI score of 150-plus in front of my own people in Multan doubled the joy,” Babar said as quoted from ICC.

“I am looking forward to making the most of the form as we head into an exciting phase of cricket with the backend of the Asia Cup nearing and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup around the corner. My team and I are eager to bring joy and happiness to the millions of Pakistan fans,” Babar added.

US Blacklists 5 Turkish Firms In Attempt To Cripple Russia's Economy

3 Turkish firms were placed under sanctions for supplying Russian defense-related manufacturers (File)

Washington, United States:

The United States blacklisted five Turkish companies as part of sweeping new sanctions aiming to hamstring the Russian economy over its war on Ukraine.

Three Turkish firms were placed under sanctions for supplying Russian defense-related manufacturers, including UAV producers, with parts and technology equipment.

Another two Turkish firms, and the owner of one of them, were hit for providing ship repair services to vessels controlled by or involved with the Russian defense sector.

They were among more than 150 individuals, companies and institutions added to the US Treasury and State Department blacklists for their alleged roles in supporting Russia’s nearly 19 month old war against Ukraine.

Most of those named were Russian manufacturers, trading companies and institutes supporting the production of arms and other supplies for the Russian armed forces, and individuals who own or manage those entities.

In addition two individuals involved with Russia’s Wagner private military group were placed on the sanctions blacklist, one for facilitating arms trade with North Korea, and the other over Wagner’s role in the Central African Republic.

“The US government is targeting individuals and entities engaged in sanctions evasion and circumvention, those complicit in furthering Russia’s ability to wage its war against Ukraine, and those responsible for bolstering Russia’s future energy production,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement.
