Man throws liquid on Kejriwal during rally, detained; AAP points finger at BJP

Former Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal reacts after a man allegedly splashed some liquid on the former during his padyatra, in New Delhi, Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024. Kejriwal was greeting people standing behind a cordon when the man approached him and splashed the liquid on him, following which the security personnel swiftly overpowered him.

New Delhi: In a security scare, a man splashed some liquid on Arvind Kejriwal during his ‘padyatra’ in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Saturday, with AAP claiming that it was spirit and the “attacker” wanted to set the party supremo afire.

While police said water was thrown at Kejriwal during the public event that was organised without their permission, the BJP strongly refuted Chief Minister Atishi’s accusation that the accused was a worker of the saffron party.

AAP lashed out at the BJP-led Centre for the incident and said this is the third “attack” on Kejriwal in the last 35 days.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Ashok Jha, a serving bus marshal at Delhi Transport Corporation’s Khanpur Depot, has been detained.

“Further examination of the person is in progress to find out the reasons behind this act,” a statement from the Delhi Police stated.

Sources claimed that Jha (41), during interrogation, said that he was frustrated as he was not getting his salary for the past six months.

Jha claimed that during the formation of AAP, he gave a donation to the party, but was upset with its “fake promises”, the sources said.

The AAP national convener was holding the padayatra in the Savitri Nagar area that falls under the Greater Kailash assembly segment.

Police said that around 5.50 pm Kejriwal was shaking hands with some followers standing behind a cordon when Jha attempted to throw water on him. He was immediately caught as the police staff were nearby, they said.

Kejriwal and the security personnel accompanying him were later seen wiping their faces.

Proper police deployment, both in plain clothes along with rope party for crowd control and in uniform, was made, the statement said.

At a press conference, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the man held for attacking Kejriwal had a matchbox in his hand. He claimed the liquid that fell on Kejriwal and him was spirit as they could smell it and an attempt was made to “burn him (Kejriwal) alive”. “A man threw spirit on him. We could smell it and there was an attempt to burn him (Kejriwal) alive. The man was carrying spirit in one hand and a matchbox in the other hand. He threw spirit that fell on Kejriwal and me… but he could not start the fire. Our alert volunteers and the public caught him,” he claimed.

In a post on X, Bharadwaj also alleged that the attacker was connected with the BJP. After the incident, Kejriwal targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he should try to stop crime in Delhi instead of stalling his march.

“Will crime in Delhi reduce if you stop me? Will shoot-outs in Delhi spot… will women and businessmen become safe…,” he said on X.

Chief Minister Atishi alleged that a BJP worker attacked Kejriwal and claimed the saffron party seems to be frustrated after losing the Delhi elections for a third time.

“Today, in broad daylight, a BJP worker attacked @ArvindKejriwal ji. BJP is seen to be frustrated after losing the Delhi elections for the third time. BJP people, the public in Delhi will take revenge for such cheap acts. Last time, the BJP got eight seats, this time Delhi people will give BJP zero seats,” she said in a post on X.

AAP had earlier alleged that some “BJP goons” tried to attack Kejriwal during his padyatra in Vikaspuri in October.

“Delhi is facing a complete breakdown of law and order under the BJP’s rule,” it said, adding that if the former chief minister is not safe in the national capital, where will the common man go? The Delhi Police comes under the purview of the Union home ministry.

The BJP strongly refuted the AAP’s accusations.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the incident of throwing “water” on Kejriwal was an old tactic of the AAP. “Delhiites are asking why such incidents happen with him only”, he said.

Party spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the BJP condemns any kind of violence. But as Delhi BJP chief earlier pointed out, a “demoralised” Kejriwal could plan something like this to claim an attack on him and that suspicion has now been proved, he said.

AAP leaders hit out at the BJP for the incident.

Its Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha said that Kejriwal raised his voice against the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Delhi on Friday, and he faced the “cowardly” attack the next day.

“This is highly condemnable. There is no place for violence in democratic politics. Arvind Kejriwal has the blessings of crores of people,” he said.

New Delhi chokes under toxic smog as air quality remains at hazardous levels

Residents of India’s capital, New Delhi, found themselves surrounded by a blanket of smog on Friday as the air quality plunged to “hazardous” levels.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) figure, as reported by the Swiss group IQAir at 0100GMT, stood at a “hazardous” 545.

IQAir had previously named New Delhi the world’s most polluted capital just last year.

Local resident Nitin lamented the dire situation, saying masks were necessary when leaving the house and the air quality meant his elderly parents were housebound and his children’s schools were shut.

The toxic smog has left many suffering from burning sensations in their eyes, sore throats, and shortness of breath.

Despite the implementation of anti-pollution measures, the capital struggles to rein in its escalating pollution crisis.

Each winter, the city grapples with smog – a lethal cocktail of smoke and fog – as cold air traps dust, emissions, and smoke from unauthorized agricultural fires.

Gambhir's Coaching Record Receives Big Verdict From Ex-India Star: "Unfair…"

Former India middle-order batter Ajay Jadeja on Saturday defended head coach Gautam Gambhir from the criticism he has received following the 0-3 drubbing against New Zealand, saying it’s “unfair” given the short time he has been in the new role. Gambhir, the hero of the 2011 World Cup title triumph, took over the reins of the India team in July after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended. Following a bright start against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, India lost the ODI series to the home side. The Test team then thrashed Bangladesh 2-0 before a nightmare outing against New Zealand put Gambhir under massive scrutiny.

“I think you are being unfair to him… If you will start judging people on the basis of their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time to for people to be judged,” Jadeja told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of FICCI Turf event on Saturday..

“If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don’t think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him,” added Jadeja, known for his exploits in the 50-over game where he scored over 5000 runs in 196 ODIs.

India’s massive 295-run win against Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Test at Perth following the no-show against the Kiwis has come as a huge morale-booster for the side and Jadeja felt Gambhir should not be judged within six months of his appointment.

“So, there are phases and it will come, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. So, I won’t go into that direction and start judging him (Gambhir) in six months.

“You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what your are seeing now is what everyone expected of him to do.” Jadeja said that regular Test skipper Rohit Sharma’s return for the second Test at Adelaide from December 6 after missing the opening game will boost India’s confidence.

“Him (Rohit Sharma) coming back to the team will surely boost India’s confidence, for sure. He is a leader, when the chips were down, team was going down, he stood up there as the leader and now when the team is going up, he will be again there as the leader.”

Asked whether KL Rahul and Rohit should swap batting slots in the second Test after the former had a formidable outing in the Perth game, Jadeja said, “I have no details of what the team is thinking right now, no views on who should bat at what number. Rohit Sharma has always been an asset to the side wherever he bats.”

Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul scored 77 in the second innings at Perth, helping India to set a massive 534-run target. Some experts have opined that Rahul should open in the Adelaide Test as well, while Rohit should in at one-down.

Model Fatally Shoots Husband Before Taking Her Own Life In Luxury US Home

A 27-year-old model allegedly fatally shot her husband before taking her own life inside their luxury home in Florida, US. According to the New York Post, the incident occurred on Wednesday at 12:30am. Cops responded to a report of multiple shots fired at the Beach Club II Hallendale at 1830 South Ocean Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Pajtim Krasniqi, 34, and his wife, Sabrina Krasniqi, 27, lying on the balcony of their lavish condo. They were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Albana Krasniqi Munrett wrote, “My Thanksgiving Eve wasn’t spent with my husband and children. It wasn’t spent with friends. It was spent with police officers, detectives and news reports talking about the vicious and senseless murder of my youngest brother by his wife.”

“Pajtimi’s wife chose to take my brother’s life away from him when she shot 5 bullets into his chest. The person he trusted the most, the person he chose to spend his life with was the one who took his away from him. She betrayed him, his love and his trust. She shattered my family. My siblings and I will never be the same. I’m terrified my mother will not ever recover,” the post continued.

According to The Post, aerial footage of the police investigation revealed what appeared to be bullet holes in a glass door, with pools of blood nearby. Inside the unit was a teddy bear, a box of roses with a heart on it and the TV still on, per the outlet.

The cops responded to the scene after receiving an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunfire detection program. This program captured at least five shots erupting in quick succession, followed by a brief pause and then a sixth gunshot.

2 More Hindu Priests Arrested In Bangladesh Amid Protests: ISKCON Kolkata

Kolkata:

Two more Hindu priests were arrested in Bangladesh, ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das claimed on Saturday.

Speaking to PTI, Radharamn Das said, “I have received information that two more ISKCON monks have been arrested by police in Bangladesh.” In a post on X on Friday night, Radharamn Das said, “In the meantime, bad news has come: two devotees who went with prasad for Chinmaya Prabhu were arrested on their way back to the temple, and Chinmaya prabhu’s secretary is also missing. Please pray for them.” Earlier on Friday, Radharamn had posted, “Another Brahmachari, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was arrested by Chattogram Police today.” “Does he look like a terrorist? #FreeISKCONMonks Bangladesh. The arrest of innocent #ISKCON brahmacharis are deeply shocking & disturbing,” Radharamn posted on X on Saturday. His comments comes comes in the backdrop of unconfirmed reports of arrest of three more ISKCON monks, days after the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmay Das.

Chinmay Das, who also served as a spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday while en route to Chattogram to attend a rally. He was denied bail and sent to jail on Tuesday by the Chattogram Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Historically, Hindus made up approximately 22 per cent of Bangladesh’s population during the 1971 Liberation War.

The Hindu population, once a substantial demographic in Bangladesh, has experienced a significant decline in recent decades, with the minority community now comprising only around 8 per cent of the country’s total population.

This drop is largely attributed to a combination of socio-political marginalisation, exodus and sporadic violence over the years.

"Maharashtra Chief Minister Will Be From BJP": Ajit Pawar

'Maharashtra Chief Minister Will Be From BJP': Ajit Pawar

The Maharashtra Chief Minister will be from BJP, ally Ajit Pawar said today, adding that the two Deputy Chief Ministers will be from the alliance partners.

Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the BJP are the three partners in the Mahayuti alliance. The BJP emerged the single largest party in the state polls with 132 seats. Mr Pawar’s party won 41 seats while Eknath Shinde’s party secured 57 seats. Together the three parties won 230 seats in the 288-member assembly, well above the majority mark of 145.

“During the meeting (Delhi meeting of Mahayuti leaders) it was decided that Mahayuti will form the government with Chief Minister from the BJP and the remaining two parties will have Deputy Chief Ministers,” said Mr Pawar.

On the question of delay in forming the government – the Maharashtra Assembly term ended on November 26 – Mr Pawar said, “This is not the first time there has been a delay… If you remember, in 1999, one month was taken for government formation.”

Six days into the declaration of the poll results, the BJP has not yet called a meeting of its MLAs-elect nor appointed the party’s legislature party leader. However, the Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced today that the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will take place on December 5 at 5 pm at Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan.

The event, said the BJP Maharashtra Chief, will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had credited “Ek hain toh safe hain (together, we are safe)” call for unity for the Maharashtra verdict.

Earlier this week, Eknath Shinde, the outgoing Chief Minister, said he would not be an “obstacle” and go by the decision of the BJP Central leadership regarding the top post. This effectively narrows down the choice to Devendra Fadnavis, who has been a Chief Minister in the past, unless the party decides to go in for a fresh face.

"Every Attack Makes Us Stronger": Gautam Adani Responds To US Allegations

'Every Attack Makes Us Stronger': Gautam Adani Responds To US Allegations

Gautam Adani addresses the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards

Jaipur:

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani today responded to the legal matter involving the US Department of Justice as a challenge which the Group has faced “not for the first time”.

“As most of you would have read, less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the US about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges. What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” Mr Adani said at the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards in Rajasthan’s Jaipur.

“The fact is that despite a lot of the vested reporting, no one from the Adani side has been charged with any violation of the FCPA or any conspiracy to obstruct justice. Yet, in today’s world, negativity spreads faster than facts – and as we work through the legal process, I want to reconfirm our absolute commitment to world class regulatory compliance,” Mr Adani said.

He told the gathering that despite the successes of the Adani Group, the challenges it has faced were even bigger. “These challenges have not broken us. Instead, they have defined us. They have made us tougher and give us the unshakeable belief that after every fall, we will rise again, stronger, and more resilient than before.”

He recalled the attack by US-based short seller Hindenburg Research in January 2023.

“… Just as we were getting ready to launch our follow-on public offering (FPO), we faced a short-selling attack initiated from abroad. This was not a typical financial strike; it was a double hit – targeting our financial stability and pulling us into a political controversy. All of this was further amplified by certain media with vested interests. But even in the face of such adversity, our commitment to our principles remained strong,” Mr Adani said.

“After successfully raising Rs 20,000 crore from India’s largest-ever FPO, we made the extraordinary decision to return the proceeds. We then further demonstrated our resilience by raising capital from several international sources and proactively reducing our debt to EBITDA ratio to below 2.5 times, an unmatched metric in the global infrastructure space.

“Moreover, our all-time record financial results in the same year showcased our commitment to operational excellence. Not a single Indian or foreign credit rating agency downgraded us. Finally, the Supreme Court of India’s affirmation of our actions validated our approach,” Mr Adani said.

Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and senior executive Vneet Jaain are clear of any bribery charges per the US Department of Justice, the Adani Group has said.

Adani Green, a firm under the Adani Group, had also called media reports on the US legal matter as “incorrect”, in a stock exchange filing.

The indictment by the Department of Justice includes five counts, but the first and fifth counts – conspiracy to violate the FCPA and conspiracy to obstruct justice – do not mention the three directors, Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and Vneet Jaain, the Adani Group said.

The Adani Group statement said that a “flawed understanding” of the US indictment by various media, foreign as well as Indian, has led to “incorrect and reckless reporting” that the three Adani Group directors faced corruption and bribery charges.

The US indictment relies only on claims that bribes were discussed or promised. It did not offer any evidence that Indian government officials received bribes from Adani executives, the group said.

Modi to attend new Maharashtra govt swearing-in on Dec 5, Fadnavis frontrunner for CM

The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 5 pm at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai, state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said.

Modi to attend new Maharashtra govt swearing-in on Dec 5, Fadnavis frontrunner for CM

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the swearing-in of the new Mahayuti government in Maharashtra on December 5 evening as BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis emerged as the frontrunner for the post of chief minister.

The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 5 pm at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai, state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said.

While there was no announcement yet on who would be the chief minister, BJP sources said Devendra Fadnavis, who has been chief minister twice and was deputy CM in the last Eknath Shinde-led government, was the frontrunner for the post.

Shinde, who is holding the charge as caretaker chief minister and who headed to his native village Dare in Satara district a day before amid speculation that he was not happy with the way the new government was shaping up, has taken ill, an aide said. He was running temperature of 105 degree F, the aide said.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 5 pm at the Azad Maidan ground, said Bawankule in a post on X. PM Modi will attend the ceremony, he added.

Speaking to reporters in Pune earlier in the day, NCP chief Ajit Pawar said the chief minister will be from the BJP, while there will be deputy CMs from the two allies — his party and the Shiv Sena. Pawar was a deputy CM in the last government.

Talking about Shinde’s illness, Shiv Sena leader Shambhuraj Desai, who hails from Satara district, told reporters that Shinde and other party leaders returned from Delhi early Friday morning after meeting the top BJP leaders, and Shinde has had cough and cold since then. “Exertion affected him, so we advised him to take rest,” said Desai. Sanjay Shirsat, a Shiv Sena leader close to Shinde, said his party must get the home portfolio. Speaking to PTI, Shirsat also claimed that attempts were made to sideline Shinde.

Meanwhile, a BJP leader said a meeting will be held on December 2 to elect the BJP legislature party leader. Fadnavis was likely to get the CM post this time, he added.

Shinde, who heads the Shiv Sena and who was chief minister since June 2022, attended a meeting of the ruling alliance leaders with senior BJP leader Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday night. Before that, he had made it clear that any decision on the chief minister’s post by the top BJP leadership would be acceptable to him. Shinde is under pressure from a group of Shiv Sena leaders who think he should not become a deputy CM, having been the chief minister for more than two years. Another group of party leaders insists that he must be part of the new government.

The Mahayuti alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) retained power with a landslide victory in the assembly elections, the results of which were announced on November 23.

While the simple majority figure in the 288-member House is 145, the BJP alone bagged 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and NCP with 41 seats.
But the government formation was delayed as the alliance failed to evolve consensus on who would be the chief minister.

Though Shinde appeared to have ceded claim to the top post, indications that there were still some points of disagreements emerged when a meeting of the allies here on Friday was put off, and he instead left for his village Dare.

The NCP has already stated that Fadnavis was acceptable to it as chief minister.

Elsewhere, Sanjay Raut of the rival Shiv Sena (UBT) told reporters that the “unnatural verdict” delayed the selection of the chief minister, and the differences in the ruling alliance forced Shinde to go to his village.

The Opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a rout in the November 20 elections, with the Congress winning 16 seats, Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) 10 seats and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) picking up 20 seats. MVA leaders including Sharad Pawar on Saturday expressed solidarity with social activist Baba Adhav who launched a protest in Pune three days ago against the alleged misuse of Electronic Voting Machines in the recent elections.

Power and money were misused to control the election machinery, alleged the senior Pawar.

Iran seeks justice for victims over Germany's role in Iraqi chemical attacks

Iran has vowed to uphold “truth and justice” for victims of chemical attacks during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88) and hold German companies accountable for supplying chemical weapons to the former Iraqi regime.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei remarked in a post on his X account on Saturday marking the International Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare.

“Iran persists in its demand for ‘truth & justice’ regarding those #German companies and others that actively and knowingly contributed to Iraq’s #ChemicalWeapons program,” he wrote.

He emphasized that there is no statute of limitations for war crimes.

The spokesperson paid tribute to Iranian soldiers and civilians who were martyred or injured by deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks during the regime’s imposed war on Iran.

During the 1980-88 war, the Iraqi army continuously employed chemical weapons against Iranian soldiers and civilians, leaving tens of thousands dead on the spot and many more suffering for years to come.

The former Iraqi regime used chemical weapons more than 500 times against Iranian forces and civilians in five border provinces.

In these inhumane attacks, a wide range of toxic chemical products, including mustard and nerve and choking agents, was used against Iranians, some of them used for the first time.

At least 10,000 Iranians were killed and more than 107,000 civilians, including women and children, sustained injuries in these attacks.

In one of the most notorious attacks, the Saddam regime dropped mustard gas bombs on Sardasht, a small city in Iran’s West Azarbaijan Province on June 28, 1987. The attack killed at least 119 Iranian civilians and injured another 8,000, leaving some of them permanently disabled.

Western countries — including Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, France and the United States — contributed to the Iraqi regime’s chemical weapons program at the time.

Victims continue to suffer to this day because of illegal Western sanctions targeting medical supplies and equipment to Iran.

Virat's Critics Receive Brutal Warning From Ex-India Star: "Rest In Peace…"

Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has heaped praise on Virat Kohli following his stunning century in Perth, which played a crucial role in India’s 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jadeja’s comments came in the wake of Kohli’s remarkable performance that silenced critics and reaffirmed his status as one of cricket’s modern-day greats. “Doubters can rest in peace… The name itself says it all. If there were doubters, they can rest in peace. Geniuses aren’t born overnight,” Jadeja told ANI, emphasizing Kohli’s exceptional talent and ability to rise to the occasion. Kohli’s century in Perth was not just a display of his technical prowess but also a testament to his resilience and determination. After facing criticism and skepticism from some quarters, Kohli’s return to form with a heroic ton was a fitting response to his detractors.

India’s comprehensive victory in the first Test has set the tone for the series, with Kohli’s innings being a significant contributor to the team’s success. His ability to perform under pressure and lead from the front has once again been underscored by this remarkable feat.

The win in Perth not only gave India a crucial lead in the series but also boosted the team’s morale.

In the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India won the toss and elected to bat but managed only 150 runs. Nitish Kumar Reddy (41 off 59 balls, six fours, one six) and Rishabh Pant (37 off 78 balls, three fours, one six) added a crucial 48-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Josh Hazlewood (4/29) was Australia’s standout bowler, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Mitchell Starc claimed two wickets each.

Australia’s response was dismal, collapsing to 79/9 before a late partnership between Mitchell Starc (26) and Alex Carey (21) took them to 104, conceding a 46-run lead. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling with 5/30, while debutant Harshit Rana impressed with 3/48.

India dominated in the second innings. KL Rahul (77 off 176 balls, five fours) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (161 off 297 balls, 15 fours, three sixes) put on a 201-run opening stand. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 (143 balls, eight fours, two sixes), supported by Washington Sundar (29 off 94 balls, one six) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (38* off 27 balls, three fours, two sixes), took India to 487/6 declared, setting Australia a target of 534.

Nathan Lyon (2/96) was Australia’s most effective bowler, while Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood took a wicket each.

At stumps on Day 3, Australia were reeling at 12/3, with Bumrah taking two wickets and Mohammed Siraj one. On Day 4, valiant efforts from Travis Head (89 off 101 balls, eight fours) and Mitchell Marsh (47 off 67 balls, three fours, two sixes) couldn’t save Australia, as they were bowled out for 238, handing India a commanding 295-run victory.

Bumrah (3/42) and Siraj (3/51) starred in the second innings, with Washington Sundar taking two wickets and Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana chipping in with one each.

Stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his eight wickets in the game.
