MS Dhoni on defamation suit filed by his ex-business partners

New Delhi: Former Indian Cricket Team Captain MS Dhoni through his counsel submitted before the Delhi High Court that the defamation suit filed by two ex-business partners against him is not maintainable.

During the hearing on Monday, counsel representing Dhoni submitted that the suit is not maintainable against me. Recently Dhoni’s former Business partners Mihir Diwakar and his wife Saumya Das have filed a suit for the issuance of directions to restrain him from publishing any defamatory and malicious statements against them alleging that the duo illegally gained Rs.15 crores from the cricketer.

The suit has been also filed against various social media platforms, Google, YouTube and several media houses, web portals etc.

Appearing for a Media Organisation, Advocate Sidhant Kunar also submitted before the bench that the defamation suit filed was not maintainable before the Delhi High Court since all the events about the complaint happened at Ranchi. And media has just reported about the filing of suit by MS Dhoni against his ex-business partners in Ranchi only.

Noting the submissions, the Bench of Justice Prathiba M Singh, listed the matter for April 3, 2024 and asked the Plaintiffs’ counsel to set out specific allegations against media houses who allegedly defamed the Plaintiffs.

The suit stated that plaintiffs are reputable business people with an untarnished reputation and are well respected by contemporaries and industry peers. The Plaintiffs hold the unblemished, untarnished and impeccable reputation of being honest and upright citizens. In addition, Plaintiff Mihir Diwakar holds a reputation as a sportsperson having represented the country internationally as he played 39 first-class between 1999 and 2009. He was also part of India’s squad for the 2000 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

The suit stated that Defendant MS Dhoni was a close friend and business partner of the Plaintiffs, however, recently their friendship underwent misunderstanding as a result of certain disputes regarding the Memorandum of Understanding and Letter of Authorization dated May 17, 2017.

In addition, as a result of the said dispute, MS Dhoni issued a legal notice dated 04.02.2023 to the Plaintiffs wherein it was alleged that the Plaintiffs had committed a breach of the agreement between the parties.

It is a matter of record to note that no allegation of cheating of Rs.15 crores was made by the Defendant against the Plaintiffs in the said Legal Notice, stated the suit.

The said Legal Notice dated 04.02.2023 was also aptly replied to by the Plaintiffs vide their Reply notice dated March 02, 2023. Now, the Defendant MS Dhoni through a Power of Attorney holder Seemant Lohani has filed a complaint dated October 27, 2023, before the court of Judicial Magistrate, Ranchi at Jharkhand anaying the Plaintiffs as accused and claiming that the Plaintiffs cheated the Defendant to the tune of Rs. 15 Crores.

The said allegations are made without any basis and evidence, with the sole intention to tarnish and malign the reputation of the Plaintiffs. The allegations made against the Plaintiffs are wild, false, baseless, vindictive, malicious and unfounded. This is the first time that the Defendant has claimed such an amount against the Plaintiffs. The allegations made by Defendant against the Plaintiffs are per se defamatory, ex facie false and without any basis whatsoever, as stated in the suit.

India drops below Bangladesh in latest WTC points table

Hyderabad: India slipped down the World Test Championship (WTC) points table below Bangladesh in the latest rankings and are currently ranked at the No. 5 after they suffered a drastic defeat to England in the opening Test match of the five match series by 28 runs.

The stage was set for a gripping battle as India and England clashed in the opening Test match. India, led by Rohit Sharma, dominated the initial days, but Ollie Pope’s resilience turned the game on its head. His masterful innings of 196 runs shifted the momentum, leaving India with a challenging target of 231 runs.

In a nail-biting finale, the Indian batting lineup faced the spin prowess of debutant Tom Hartley. The young spinner spun a web, claiming 7 crucial wickets in the final innings. Despite the valiant efforts, India fell short by 28 runs, handing England a memorable victory.

As the dust settles, India finds itself slipping down the World Test Championship rankings to the fifth spot. The disappointment is palpable, especially considering their mixed performance in the ongoing tournament. With two wins, two losses, and a draw, the Indian team faces a critical juncture in the championship.

Attention now turns to the upcoming Test match in Vizag, where redemption beckons for the home team. Shubman Gill, in the spotlight for his struggles at the No. 3 position, carries the weight of expectations. Having played five Tests without a half-century in that role, Gill faces a pivotal moment to prove his mettle and contribute to India’s resurgence.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Wolves advance to FA Cup last-16

London: Manchester United, Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers put their names in the hat for the last-16 of the FA Cup on Sunday, while Watford and Southampton will need a replay.

Manchester United made hard work of their 4-2 win away to League Two (fourth tier) Newport County, who fought back from 2-0 down to 2-2 after Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put United 2-0 up in just 13 minutes, reported Xinhua.

Bryn Morris and Will Evans pulled Newport level. Antony put United back ahead with 21 minutes to play, but the result was in the air until the 94th minute when Rasmus Hojlund netted a fourth goal.

The news that coach Jurgen Klopp will leave at the end of the season didn’t affect Liverpool who won 5-2 at home to Norwich City, with goals from Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch.

Wolverhampton Wanderers won the first Black Country derby in over 10 years away to West Bromwich Albion at 2-0, thanks to goals from Pedro Neto after 38 minutes, and Matheus Cunha with 12 minutes left.

The game was suspended for 35 minutes after Cunha’s goal triggered ugly incidents between rival fans.

On Saturday, Luton Town, Brighton, Newcastle United, Leicester City and Maidstone United qualified for the last 16, with Maidstone from the National League South – the sixth tier of the English game, winning away to Ipswich Town (second in the Championship) to make the biggest Cup upset of all time.

Kohli, the fittest cricketer, rarely seen at NC: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma Acknowledges Kohli as Among the Fittest in World Cricket during First Test against England.

Kohli, the fittest cricketer, rarely seen at NC: Rohit Sharma

Hyderabad: India captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday praised the work ethics of his predecessor Virat Kohli, saying the former India captain is so conscious of his fitness that he has never been to the National Cricket Association (NCA) to use the services of experts there.

Kohli is one of the fittest players currently in World cricket and Rohit Sharma acknowledged that fact during the first Test against England at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here. With Kohli pulling out of the first two Tests citing personal reasons, India succumbed to a 28-run defeat to England, despite taking a 190 runs first innings lead.

In a conversation with veteran cricketer Dinesh Karthik during India’s Test series against England, the Indian skipper said he wants youngsters to take inspiration from Kohli.

“Virat Kohli has never been to NCA in his entire career. I would say that all the younger players should look up to the passion that he has. Leave alone how he plays the cover drive, flick, cut but first things first you have to understand what is the quality of the players that makes him where he is today,” Rohit told Karthik on JioCinema.

Kohli had joined the Indian team in Hyderabad ahead of the first Test but did not participate in an optional training session on Monday before pulling out of the first two Tests after discussing the issue with Rohit and the team management.

“I have watched Kohli enough. He can easily be satisfied with what he has achieved. He can say that I will take it easy in these 2-3 series, I will come later, but he is always there for the team. That mindset of being hungry and not complacent cannot be taught. You have to learn that by looking at the others. It has to come from within. I cannot teach you that,” Rohit added.

Definitely our greatest triumph since I’ve been captain, gushes Stokes

Hyderabad: Ben Stokes rated the 28-run victory over India in the first Test here on Sunday as the finest moment yet in his time as the England captain.

Fuelled by Ollie Pope‘s epic 196 and debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley’s seven-wicket haul, England roared back into the match even after conceding a massive 190-run first innings lead.

“Since I’ve taken the captaincy on, we’ve had a lot of fantastic moments as a team. We’ve had a lot of great victories.

“We’ve been involved in some amazing games. But I think where we are and who we’re playing against, this victory is definitely our greatest triumph since I’ve been captain,” said Stokes in the post-match press meet.

Stokes kept faith in Hartley despite a below-par outing in the first innings.

The Durham man explained the rationale.

“I was willing to give him the longer spell regardless of what had happened (in the first innings) because I knew I was going to have to turn back to him at some point throughout this Test match.

“Whether or not that was the reason to say he got seven wickets and won us the game this innings, who knows? But that was the thought process behind it and giving the people we select complete backing and not going back on the words that we speak,” added Stokes.

“I’m a great observer of the game. I learned a lot from our first innings in the field. I watched a lot of how the Indian spinners operate in the field and the fields that Rohit (Sharma) set.

“So, I tried to take a lot of that into our innings here when we obviously had to bowl them out. I’m thrilled for everyone involved,” said Stokes.

The premier all-rounder also offered a word of praise for Pope.

“I think the situation we found ourselves in, coming in at No. 3, some of the shots that we’ve seen, just that whole innings, 190 on such a difficult wicket.

“He was able to manipulate the field with his sweep shots and the way he was able to rotate the strike… I think that’s the greatest innings that’s ever been played in the subcontinent by an English batsman,” he added.

With four days left for 2nd Test, Ravindra Jadeja could be doubtful starter with hamstring niggle

He didn’t look comfortable and head coach Rahul Dravid, wasn’t forthcoming about the extent of the damage.

With four days left for 2nd Test, Ravindra Jadeja could be doubtful starter with hamstring niggle

Hyderabad: England skipper Ben Stokes‘ direct hit to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t just the turning point of the first Test but could also be one that decides the course of the series as India’s No 1 all-rounder across formats was seen struggling with a hamstring niggle.

Jadeja, who was the top scorer in India’s first innings with 87 and also took five wickets across two innings, might have snapped a hamstring muscle as he immediately felt the area trying to go for a quick single.

He didn’t look comfortable and head coach Rahul Dravid, wasn’t forthcoming about the extent of the damage.

“We’ll see. I honestly haven’t had a chance to speak to the physio as yet. Once I get back, I’ll speak to him and see what it is about,” Dravid said at the post-match media conference.

The extent of the hamstring injury decides the duration of lay-off but even if it is not a tear and just merely strain, it still might be advisable to give him rest for a week if not more.

The turnaround between first and second Test is a very short one — just four days — as it starts on February 2 at Visakhapatnam.

It is still not clear whether Jadeja will travel with the team to Vizag or head to National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Jadeja had also missed out on a Test match last month in South Africa when he developed back spasms on the morning of the first Test in Centurion.

ICC lifts ban imposed on Sri Lanka Cricket

The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.

ICC lifts ban imposed on Sri Lanka Cricket

New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday lifted the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect. ICC released a statement to announce the uplifting of SLC’s ban which read, “The International Cricket Council lifted the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today with immediate effect.

The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.

In November 2023, SLC was suspended by ICC following a political slugfest in SL after the introduction of an interim committee led by Arjun Ranatunga by the Sri Lanka Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who also suspended the entire SLC board following a heavy loss to India in the Cricket World Cup and a disappointing tournament overall, which saw them win only two matches out of nine and also miss out on ICC Champions Trophy 2025 slot.

The ICC Board met on November 21 and decided that Sri Lanka could continue to compete internationally both in bilateral cricket and ICC events.

But, the ongoing U19 men’s Cricket World Cup was moved to South Africa, which was initially set to be played in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka were allowed to play in international cricket following a “fervent appeal” from President Shammi Silva to the members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) board members to “carve out an exception” that allowed the nation to play international cricket despite getting suspended.

“However, pursuant to SLC President Shammi Silvas’s fervent appen to the Members, the ICC Board has carved out an exception permitting Sri Lankans to compete internationally in bilateral and ICC events, despite the suspension,” SLC release stated.

Since the suspension, Sri Lanka have hosted Zimbabwe for a white-ball series, earlier this year.

Hyderabad: India skipper Rohit Sharma stated that it was hard to pinpoint the moment when the momentum shifted towards England in the first Test.

After dominating England for the majority of four days, India found themselves on the losing side with a 28-run defeat.

After a fruitful outing with the ball, the hosts managed to take a lead of 190 runs, Ollie Pope pulled out reverse sweeps, overwhelmed India’s spinners with his 196 in the second innings and handed the hosts their first defeat after taking a lead of more than 100 runs.

“Hard to pinpoint where it went wrong. With a lead of 190 we were in control but exceptional batting – probably one of the best I’ve seen in Indian conditions, well played Ollie Pope. I thought 230 was gettable but it wasn’t to be,” Rohit said after the game.

“[Second innings] Thought we bowled in the right areas, we analysed what went well and what didn’t. But you’ve got to take your hat off and say well played to Pope. Hard to look at one or two things. We didn’t bat well enough to get to that score,” Rohit added.

While India’s established batters failed to pass Tom Hartley’s spin Test, the lower order turned up against all odds and sent a ray of hope of an unprecedented victory.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj added 25 runs for the final wicket to take India a step closer towards victory.

“[Last pair] 20-30 runs, anything is possible. The lower order fought well and showed the top order [what to do]. We didn’t take some chances but that can happen, it’s the first game of the series,” Rohit stated.

Coming to the day’s action, Pope’s blitz helped England set a tricky target of 231. In reply, India batters strived hard after losing a handful of wickets in patches. The lower order showed patience with Ravichandran Ashwin and KS Bharat taking the fight against the spinners.

However, Hartley’s spin proved to be a challenge that they could not overcome and ended up suffering a 28-run defeat.

I haven’t seen it being done consistently, we need to counter: Rahul Dravid on ‘Bazball’

Hyderabad: Ollie Pope embodied England‘s ‘Bazball’ making a 196 filled with sweeps, reverse sweeps and reverse scoops during the first Test, and India head coach Rahul Dravid admitted they will have to counter the unorthodox approach to make a comeback into the series.

Pope’s second innings 196 was central to the Three Lions’ unforgettable 28-run win over India in the Hyderabad match after conceding a big 190-run lead.

India had only lost once after taking an advantage of this size, and it came against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015 where they went ahead by 192 runs.

“We’ll have to counter that (Bazball). I certainly haven’t seen it being done that (playing sweeps, reverse sweeps) consistently against that quality of bowlers. You’ve seen people try that before, and play some exceptional innings. “But to be able to play it that consistently and that successfully without making that many mistakes, and maybe one or two odd mistakes, I probably haven’t seen it,” said Dravid during his post-match press meet on Sunday.

Dravid lauded Pope for pulling off reverse sweeps regularly to upset the bowlers’ rhythm.

“Yeah, especially, the reverse sweep…I think the sweep is something that we’ve seen people employ in the past. But to be able to play a reverse sweep that consistently and that successfully for that long, you know, hats off to Pope.”

The 26-year-old Englishman’s effort was marked by his dominance over experienced Indian spinners – R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who struggled for impact in the third innings on a pitch that offered considerable turn.

However, Dravid didn’t abandon his trusted soldiers and hoped that the pair would bounce back sooner than later.

Dravid, though, did not lose sight of the need to get better at execution. “We have to get more disciplined with where we pitch the ball. We will work on it and we will get better at it as we got some world-class spinners. It’s not the first time that they’ve been challenged. “One of the good things about our spinners is that they’ve always come back. But Pope truly played an exceptional innings. And if somebody does something exceptional, we’ll shake his hand and congratulate him.”

But that sportsman spirit apart, India will have to seriously plan how to unsettle this cavalier England group, in particular a high on confidence Pope.

Dravid, primarily, wanted his bowlers to regain their lines.

“It’s important that we respond. We need to come up with some plans and strategies and see how we can make him (Pope) play those shots from even more difficult lines. “We need to be even more disciplined and meticulous with our execution because I thought our execution was a little bit off. Hopefully, in the next Test match if we get our execution right, then I hope he makes a mistake,” said Dravid.

India also had an injury scare as Ravindra Jadeja walked back clutching his hamstring after being run out while attempting a risky single. Jadeja was caught well short of the crease by Ben Stokes’ direct hit. Dravid said they will keep a check on the all-rounder as the second Test at Visakhapatnam is starting on February 2. “We’ll see. I honestly haven’t had a chance to speak to the physio as yet. Once I get back, I’ll speak to him and see what it is about,” he said.
