U19 World Cup 2024: India scripts history with three consecutive 200+ run wins

Hyderabad: In a remarkable display of dominance, the Indian Under-19 cricket team has etched its name in the annals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024, becoming the first team ever to secure three consecutive victories by a margin of over 200 runs.

The young Indian talents showcased their prowess by overpowering Ireland, USA, and New Zealand with commanding victories of 201, 201, and 214 runs respectively.

This unprecedented feat has pushed India to the forefront of the tournament. Remaining unbeaten in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, the Indian squad is set to face Nepal in their next encounter scheduled for February 2 at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein.

The team’s stellar performance has not only established them as formidable contenders but also created a buzz of anticipation for their upcoming matches.

In their World Cup opener, India set the tone by defeating Bangladesh with an 84-run victory, laying the foundation for their subsequent record-breaking spree.

Players from both teams have already arrived in Visakhapatnam and started their preparations.

On the sidelines, Indian wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat received felicitation from the Andhra Cricket Association as he is set to represent India on his home ground in the upcoming match against England on February 2.

The Andhra Cricket Association honoured him by offering a flower bouquet, shawl, and memento.

Born in Visakhapatnam on October 3, 1993, the stumper made his debut in Test matches in 2019 against Bangladesh.

Looking at how England went about in 1st game; practising some sweep shots: KS Bharat

Visakhapatnam: With India 1-0 behind in the five-game Test series against England, wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat said the hosts’ have taken a cue from the visitors’ batting approach in the series opener at Hyderabad and have been making an effort to focus on sweep shots ahead of the second match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium starting on Friday.

England secured a thrilling 28-run win over India in the series opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad last week, on the back of vice-captain Ollie Pope’s magnificent 196 and debutant spinner Tom Hartley’s 7-62 helping them emerge victorious from a situation of conceding a 190-run lead.

In that game, England relied heavily on sweep and reverse-sweep as run-making options, something which the Indian batters have been practising at in their nets session in Visakhapatnam.

“In our team meetings we spoke about the things we could have done better and yes, we certainly have few plans (for this Test match). (We are) definitely looking at the way how they went about the first game, playing some reverse (sweeps). That’s something we have definitely worked on.

“Playing in India, we play a lot of cricket on these tracks. It’s not that we don’t know how to sweep, reverse sweep or paddle-sweep, but on that particular day depending on the situation of the team, we as batters take our calls. It is very clear to us to bat with freedom.

“We have also practiced the reverse sweeps before the first game as well. But while playing out in the centre, it is the batters’ individual plan. If the team demands us to play in a certain way then we are up to it. But individually we have separate set plans and looking to do well as a batting unit in this game,” said Bharat in the pre-match press conference.

Asked about any doubts in the dressing room post the loss to England, Bharat denied any such claims. “After the game, the atmosphere (in the team) is absolutely relaxed. They asked us not to panic. The instruction is very clear that it’s a long Test series and we have played such series in the past.

“We as individuals have to focus on good things. Things that we want to try, which we want to implement. We just want to play good cricket. That’s the message from the captain and the coach,” he said.

India will be playing the second Test minus injured duo of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Virat Kohli still on leave for personal reasons, meaning either of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan could be handed a debut. Bharat admitted the trio’s absence leaves India short on experience, but pointed towards the team eager to learn from the mistakes in Hyderabad.

“Their experience definitely counts, but if you look at youngsters like us, we have played a lot of domestic cricket and we have played a lot of cricket. It’s unfortunate for them to miss, but then our bench strength is always ready for a challenge on these kinds of tracks. The guys walking in, I am sure they will definitely do well and take it forward.

“They (England) played really good shots (at Hyderabad). Credit goes to them, as they are allowed to play good shots. We did everything, like planning happening out in the centre. Rohit bhai was speaking to us, Jadeja was discussing on the lengths, lines, speeds. But then at the end of the day, if someone batted well, you have to give credit to them.

“He (Ollie Pope) really batted us out in the second innings, but it happens. In cricket and in any sport you have to learn, accept and move forward with the learnings, which were there a lot for us and we are definitely taking it forward,” said the wicketkeeper.

Friday’s match will also be Bharat’s first international match at his home ground in Visakhapatnam. Bharat was a ball-boy at the venue when MS Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 148 against Pakistan in an ODI game here in 2005 and began training with the Andhra Pradesh Ranji Trophy team as an 11-year-old.

Bharat was also felicitated by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) on Thursday, with him being the third India Test-playing cricketer from the state after former chief selector MSK Prasad and veteran batter Hanuma Vihari.

“Playing in front of your home crowd is definitely special. But I am keeping the emotions aside, as I am looking to this as any other Test game which you are playing for your country. There will be a lot of noise when you are playing for your country. There will be good noises, bad noises, but the thing is you will have to be in the present moment.

“For me, it is a moment of pride about playing in front of your home crowd, but if you look at the bigger picture, there is a Test game which is supposed to be played and my whole focus and our whole focus is definitely on that. Yes, it’s an overwhelming feeling, but you have to let it sink and focus on the Test game,” he concluded.

Valencia defender Gabriel to make free transfer move to Atletico Madrid

Madrid: Atletico Madrid have signed Valencia’s Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista, 33, on a free transfer.

The former Arsenal and Villarreal stopper has agreed an initial contract until the end of the season and will cover for Caglar Soyuncu, who has joined Fenerbahce on loan, while Jose Gimenez is injured.

The Brazilian will bring a lot of experience to an Atletico defense which has looked slightly vulnerable this season, and could make his debut against Real Madrid this weekend.

Curiously, Gabriel’s last appearance for Valencia was in their 2-0 defeat away to Atletico on Sunday night. He will be able to play for his new club in the UEFA Champions League, but is ineligible for their Copa del Rey semifinal against Athletic Bilbao as he has already represented Valencia in the same competition.

Other signings in Spain in the run up to the closure of the transfer window saw Rayo Vallecano seal a loan deal with Portuguese midfielder Miguel Crespo from Fenerbahce.

The loan is until the end of the current season, but includes an option to make the move permanent for around four million euros.

Celta Vigo are close to sealing a move for Argentinian left-back Tadeo Allende from Godoy Cruz.

In other cases, midfielder Arnau Puigmal has left bottom side Almeria to join second division Elche, while Brazilian winger Luiz Henrique is on the verge of leaving Real Betis to return to his homeland with Botafogo in what could be a record signing for the Brazilian league.

Hyderabad: Indian batters are not known for their sweeping skills but they made a conscious effort to practise that shot in their opening net session ahead of the second Test against England beginning in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

Barring skipper Rohit Sharma, not many Indian batters resorted to the sweep shot in the opening Test which the hosts lost to England by 28 runs, only their fourth defeat at home since 2013.

Sweeps and reverse sweeps on the other hand have emerged as a strong weapon for England batters against the champion Indian spinners who were at the receiving end in the second innings of Hyderabad Test.

Gill, Patidar go big on sweeps

All Indian squad members turned up for the opening session that took place in the afternoon. Struggling for runs, Shubman Gill was seen practising both the conventional and reverse sweep.

For someone who has all the shots, he was criticised for his defensive play in the series opener. In line to make his debut on Friday, Rajat Patidar too went for the sweep and reverse sweep.

All the batters were not sweeping every ball but it was a lot more than what they practised in the Hyderabad nets. Sarfaraz Khan, another player who could make his debut, also had a hit in the nets.

Both him and Patidar also got catching practice in the slips. The sweep doesn’t come naturally to the home team batters and coach Vikram Rathour said that they should play to their strengths.

“It is not something you can try. You need to practice it. If you have more shots it is beneficial. We play in a traditional way. Our strength is going straight and using our feet. We need to do that well and and if we can play some shots, that is always a good addition,” he said.

Joe Root bats left handed

England’s batting mainstay Joe Root set up as a left-hander before turning for the reverse sweep in the team’s session in the morning. Jack Leach, who is nursing an injury on his left keen, did not train on Wednesday and looks a doubtful starter, bringing uncapped Shoaib Bashir into the equation.

Hyderabad: In a battle between two contrasting teams, bottom-placed Hyderabad FC kick-off their second leg of the Indian Super League season 10 against FC Goa in GMC Balayogi Stadium, Hyderabad on Thursday.

The Nizam, champions of the 2021-22 seasons, are in deep trouble not just on the pitch but also off the it with financial woes, resulting in many first team Indian and foreign players terminating their contracts or moved to other ISL clubs and in desperate need of financial injection to sustain in the league.

Winless so far in the season, the club has a thin and a young squad for the rest of the season. “During the first half of the season, the senior players who have departed from the club did not play at their highest level. Now that those players are gone, the road ahead for the club is to nourish the young players to bring out the best,” says HFC head coach Thangboi Singto. “It is a big moment for the club starting with the second leg against FC Goa as the team expects to do better than the first leg,” he added. The visitors are under the guidance of coach Manolo Marquez, who needs no introduction given the Spaniard guided the Nizams to the ISL title. Moreover, former HFC forward Mohammad Yasir will be back in Gachibowli, who recently made a loan move to FC Goa.

Both clubs are locked with three wins each in the head to head stats, with previous three meetings favoured in HFC’s triumphs. However, this time lies a different challenge as the Gaurs in stupendous form, who are in second place, while Hyderabad are enduring a disaster season.

The clash between the two sides appears to favour the Goan side. However, HFC head coach asserts his team is ready for the upcoming challenge even though the odds are against his side. “The players are motivated to improve the situation of the club at least on the pitch. We are very realistic about the club’s situation and eyeing to move from the bottom of the table and finish mid-table by the end of the season,” he concluded.
