Rohan Bopanna meets PM Modi following historic Australian Open men’s doubles triumph

New Delhi: The world number one-ranked men’s doubles tennis star Rohan Bopanna on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his historic Australian Open title win. Rohan took to X (formerly Twitter) to share some pictures of his meeting with the Prime Minister.

Bopana gifted the racquet which helped him become the world’s top ranked men’s doubles player as well as secured him the Australian Open grand slam title. He is the oldest first-time world number-one in tennis. Bopanna wrote: “I had the privilege to meet our honourable Prime Minister Modi ji today. This acknowledgement is very humbling & it was my honour to present the very racket that led me to become World No. 1 and the AO grand slam champion. Your grace has left me inspired & encouraged.”

The Prime Minister also took to X and retweeted Bopanna’s tweet with a caption: “Glad to have met you. Your accomplishment makes India proud and your dedication motivates several people. My best wishes for your endeavours ahead.”

In the summit clash on Saturday, Bopanna and Matthew Ebden dominated on serve throughout the one-hour, 40-minute match, winning 80 per cent (40/50) of games with their first delivery and not facing a break point to top off a fantastic week.

The duo defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter. Bopanna, who made his 17th Australian Open appearance in this edition, comfortably wrapped up his maiden Grand Slam men’s doubles title victory.

Aged 43 years 329 days, he also became the oldest Grand Slam champion. The Indian tennis player is also the third Indian man in the Open Era to win a major men’s doubles title, following Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi.

This was Bopanna’s second Grand Slam triumph, his first in men’s doubles. His previous Grand Slam victory came in mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada at the 2017 French Open.

India thrash Nepal by 132 runs to storm into U19 World Cup semifinal

Dhas (116, 101 balls) and Saharan (100, 107 balls), who added 215 off 202 balls, lifted India from a tricky 62/3 to a formidable 297/5 after they opted to bat first.

India thrash Nepal by 132 runs to storm into U19 World Cup semifinal

Bloemfontein: Contrasting hundreds by Sachin Dhas and skipper Uday Saharan were the twin pillars on which India built their commanding 132-run win over Nepal in their final Super Six Group 1 match, which also carried them to the semifinals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup semifinals here on Friday.

Dhas (116, 101 balls) and Saharan (100, 107 balls), who added 215 off 202 balls, lifted India from a tricky 62/3 to a formidable 297/5 after they opted to bat first.

The tournament favourites, who now have eight points, then limited the Himalayan nation to 165 for nine and in the semis, India are all set to face South Africa at Benoni on Tuesday.

However, Nepal made a rather strong start to their chase reaching 65 for 1 in the 14th over before they fell headlong, losing six wickets for a mere 12 runs to be placed at 77 for 7 in the 28th over.

Left-arm spinner Saumy Pandey, who now has 16 wickets to be placed at the second spot in the tournament’s highest wicket-taker list, sparked the collapse with figures of 10-1-29-4.

The only silver lining for Nepal was the unbroken last wicket partnership of Aakash Chand (18 not out) and Durgesh Gupta (29 not out) who put together 45 runs to cover the stipulated 50 overs.

Before Pandey entered the stage, new ball bowler Raj Limbani initiated the downfall by dismissing Deepak Bohara, who managed 22 runs off 42 balls.

Bohara attempted a big shot but fell victim to the pace, offering a simple return catch to the bowler. Pandey soon joined the party.

First, he removed Uttam Magar (8), who struggled to find gaps and fell while attempting an aggressive shot, finding the fielder at mid-on.

Pandey then delivered the ball of the match, clean-bowling Arjun Kumal (26). The delivery that had some bounce straightened to hit the inside of the off-stump.

The Nepalese batting order continued to crumble under relentless pressure.

From being 77/7 in 27.5 overs, skipper Dev Khanal delayed the inevitable with a valiant 33 from 53 balls.

But India also struggled to wrap up the issue at this stage that could have given them a fourth successive 200+ margin victory in this event.

The Indians also had an injury scare as regular wicketkeeper batter Aravalli Avanish had to go out with a right-hand injury as Innesh Mahajan kept the wickets.

Earlier, India got off to a brisk start with Adarsh Singh scoring 21 off 18 balls before falling prey to Gulsan Jha’s short ball tactic.

Singh edged one down the leg side to be caught by wicketkeeper Magar, as Nepal made early inroads in the first powerplay.

The Indians were rattled further with the dismissals of Arshin Kulkarni (18) and Priyanshu Moliya (19) in the space of three balls.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically with a game-changing partnership between skipper Saharan and Dhas. Saharan anchored the innings, playing second fiddle to the aggressive Dhas.

Promoted to No. 5 due to the loss of early wickets, Dhas bossed the day with his controlled yet aggressive batting. In previous matches, Dhas batted lower down the order, either at No 6 or 7, that limited his opportunities to express himself.

However, today Dhas asserted himself from the start. The Maharashtra lad showed a keen eye for picking loose deliveries to target specific bowlers and vacant areas on the field to score his runs.

Playing positively, he took control of the situation, scoring around the wicket and keeping the opposition bowlers at bay. He paced his innings beautifully, completing his maiden fifty of the tournament in just 50 balls.

Off-spinner Khanal attempted to contain Dhas by dragging his length back but the batter unleashed a powerful pull shot over wide long-on for a six, demonstrating his clean hitting skills. Dhas played a delightful inside-out shot against off-spinner Bhandari, and the boundary took him to 99.

In the very next delivery, he elegantly nudged the ball to long-on to reach a well-deserved century, which came off 93 balls.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Jaiswal’s unbeaten 179 propels India to 336/6 on Day 1

Visakhapatnam: It was surely a day to remember for young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who toiled hard for 93 overs to score his highest Test score of 179 off 257 deliveries but a couple of late strikes by their spinners helped England fight back into the match at the end of Day 1 of the second Test at Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium here on Friday.

At the end of the day, India have put up a score of 336 for 6 in 93 overs, thanks to Jaiswal’s pure Test batting effort as he batted through the 93 overs, showing a precocious variety of Test-match gears to finish unbeaten on 179 showing good balance between defence and attack.

This is Jaiswal’s second Test hundred and his second big hundred too: his previous best was a lovely, unhurried 171 on debut in Dominica against West Indies. When play was called off for the day, Jaiswal was batting on 179 with Ravichandran Ashwin keeping him company on 5. India trail England 0-1 in the five-match series after losing the first match in Hyderabad.

As the day unfolded, it was the young England spinner, Shoaib Bashir, who marked his Test debut with a poised display of his skills, claiming two wickets and adding a layer of composure to England’s arsenal. Amidst the challenge of a tough day in the field, England stood defiant, refusing to succumb to the pressure that has often plagued visiting teams in such conditions.

The star of the day, however, was Jaiswal, whose sublime innings of 179 not out off 257 balls became the cornerstone of India’s resurgence. From the very first stroke, a fearless slap for four off Joe Root’s initial delivery, to the towering six that marked his second Test century and first on home soil, Jaiswal showcased a class that set him apart. As the day wore on, even cramps couldn’t deter him, and he surpassed his previous Test best with a sweetly struck sixth six off Rehan Ahmed’s leg spin.

In contrast, the rest of India’s batting line-up presented a mixed bag, with six dismissals between scores of 14 and 34. The danger of repeating the shortcomings seen in Hyderabad loomed, where multiple batters reached double figures but failed to deliver the knockout blow. Jaiswal, however, stood as the exception, refusing to pull any punches. The lop-sided nature of England’s attack, featuring three spinners and the seasoned campaigner James Anderson, unfolded as a gutsy display. The 41-year-old veteran, back in action after Ashes struggles, showcased an ageless exhibition of cut and guile.

Dismissing Shubman Gill for his 691st wicket, Anderson’s influence reverberated across 17 overs, leaving an indelible mark on a day that balanced on the precipice of promise and challenge. India will be particularly disappointed with how they lost wickets No. 5 and 6, Axar Patel fell to Bashir and K.S Bharat caught at backward point to Ahmed while failing to keep a square cut down.

Brief scores: India 336/6 in 93 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 179 not out, Shubman Gill 34; Rehan Ahmed 2-61, Shoaib Bashir 2-100) against England.

2nd Test: Jaiswal’s fifty puts India in comfortable position at lunch

2nd Test: Jaiswal’s fifty puts India in comfortable position at lunch

Indias Yashasvi Jaiswal plays a shot during the first day of the second Test cricket match between India and England at the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy cricket stadium in Visakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam: After captain Rohit Sharma’s wicket, Yashasvi Jaiswal-Shubman Gill’s partnership provided the hosts with a strong start as the pair took India past 100-run mark, making England toil hard in Visakhapatnam for wickets in the first session of the opening day of second Test at YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Friday.

At Lunch, India’s score read 103/2 in 31 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) and Shreyas Iyer (4) standing unbeaten at the crease. After opting to bat first, India started their innings on a comfortable note as openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched a steady partnership. The duo were decisive in their approach made the visitors toil hard making merry of the excellent batting conditions on offer.

The Indian batters rotated the strike brilliantly, not allowing the England bowlers to settle down while whacking the loose balls on offer. Jaiswal was the aggressor of the batting pair, smashing boundaries regularly. The first session was completely dominated by the hosts’ batters as runs came thick for India. Jaiswal was fearless with his approach and showcased his variety of shots.

Debutant Shoaib Bashir provided his team with a big breakthrough as he removed Rohit for 14 runs, breaking an opening partnership of 40 runs. Even the veteran bowlers were at the receiving end of young Indian batters.

In the 29th over, veteran pacer James Anderson provided England with a massive breakthrough as he dismissed under-fire Gill for 34. Gill got completely confused by the swing in Anderson’s delivery and the ball touched the edge of the bat and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes made no mistake and took a terrific catch behind the stumps.

Jaiswal smoked the first six of the match in the 30th over and with a boundary on the next ball, he brought up his half-century in 89 deliveries. The pair of Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer displayed great resilience and determination as they took India’s total beyond the 100-run mark at the stroke of Lunch with a powerful boundary.

Brief score: India 103/2 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 51*, Shubman Gill 34; James Anderson 1-19) vs England.

INDvENG 2nd Test: India chooses to bat after winning toss; Patidar debut, Siraj rested

Visakhapatnam: India have won the toss and elected to bat first against England in the second Test match here at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Friday.

India skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed a debut for Rajit Patidar, while Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar also came in for injured KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja.

Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj has been rested for second Test. “The decision was taken keeping in mind the duration of the series and the amount of cricket he has played in recent times,” the BCCI said.

“Siraj will be available for selection for the third Test in Rajkot. Avesh Khan has re-joined the team for the 2nd Test,” it added.

After winning the toss, Rohit said: “We’ll bat first. Looks a good pitch, the pitch will do its thing, we need to play good cricket. What happened in Hyderabad is history, we need to move on. We have spoken on things we need to do, now we need to execute on our plans. I thought we batted well in the first innings, but didn’t have the same intent.

“Similarly, in the second innings with the bowl there was a brilliant knock by Ollie Pope. Injuries are part and parcel of the game, but that’s why we have the guys sitting on the bench.”

On the other hand, England captain Ben Stokes said: “Would have batted as well. It was a great last week, but we know India will come back hard. To come from behind like we did was very pleasing. We’ll take the confidence from that, but new week now. It is an amazing atmosphere to play in for the boys. To get such an opportunity at the start of their career will do wonders for their confidence.

England had announced their playing XI on Thursday with two changes – Shoaib Bashir and James Anderson come in for Jack Leach and Mark Wood.
