La Liga: Real Madrid dominate Girona 4-0, extend lead to five points

Madrid: A Vincius Jr. stunner, Jude Bellingham brace and a Rodrygo strike guide Real Madrid to a crushing 4-0 win over La Liga challengers Girona, opening up a five-point lead on top of the table.

Real Madrid flew out of the blocks, making it 1-0 just six minutes in as Vini Jr. picked up the ball way out, feinted to pass and then caught Gazzaniga out with a spectacular effort that left the goalkeeper with no chance at all.

Madrid seemed comfortable at the back, despite Girona taking control of the ball and creating the odd threatening moment. Bellingham tried his luck with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box with just over half-an-hour gone, and it was to prove a warning shot by the English ace.

In the very next move with 36 minutes on the clock, Real Madrid doubled their advantage with Vini Jr. delivering a delightful pass with the outside of his right boot, sending Bellingham through one-on-one with Gazzaniga, who rounded the keeper with his first touch and turned the ball into the net with his second.

Girona came out for the second half eager to reduce the deficit but their hopes were swiftly dented by another goal for Ancelotti’s side on 54th minute. Vini Jr. was in the thick of it again on the left-hand side, beating Yan Couto with a sublime piece of skill and getting his shot off him. Gazzaniga’s parry fell at the feet Bellingham, who completed his brace before retiring a minute and replaced by Brahim.

Real Madrid were in full flow and they found a fourth goal with 61 minutes played. Vini Jr. stole the ball from Yan Couto and Rodrygo did the rest. He picked it up, drove straight towards goal and unleashed a precise curling effort the minute he set foot inside the visitors’ box.

Premier League: Liverpool reclaims top spot with 3-1 victory against Burnley

Liverpool: Liverpool restored their two-point lead at the top of the table with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Burnley thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

After Manchester City’s 2-0 win against Everton earlier in the day, Liverpool knew that only a victory would take them back to the summit, and despite being unconvincing in large spells, they did enough to secure another three points and remain top for another week.

Jota’s 31st-minute opener put Liverpool ahead on Saturday night before Dara O’Shea equalised for Burnley just before the interval. Diaz quickly restored the lead in the early stages of the second half, however, and Nunez sealed victory late on.

After a slow start, Liverpool began to assert pressure on Burnley’s goal by forcing a series of corners. And in the 31st minute, they made a set-piece count as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s out swinging ball was met by Jota, who had the simple task of heading the ball into an empty net after Burnley ‘keeper James Trafford failed to claim the ball, Premier League reports.

Trafford made amends moments later as he denied Diaz at the near post before Burnley shocked Anfield by levelling the score in the 45th minute through Dara O’Shea.

Liverpool made a half-time substitution as Harvey Elliott came on for Alexander-Arnold and the former had a quick impact after producing a cross that found the head of Diaz, who restored the Reds’ lead in the 52nd minute.

Burnley had three great chances to level the score in quick succession. First Fofana shot straight at Kelleher after racing through on goal before Wilson Odobert shot the rebound wide. Moments later Fofana was through on goal again but this time steered his shot wide.

The match opened up and Jota forced a good save from Trafford before Quansah’s strike narrowly missed the frame of the goal. Liverpool then put the contest out of Burnley’s reach when Nunez planted his header into the bottom corner from Elliott’s cross in the 79th minute.

A third straight league win at Anfield puts Liverpool on 54 points, two more than second-placed Man City while Burnley remain 19th with 13 points, seven adrift of Luton Town in 17th.

Jason Cummings celebrates after scoring a goal against Hyderabad FC on Saturday.

Kolkata: Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured their first win after four games in the Indian Super League as they beat Hyderabad FC 2-0 here on Saturday.

First-half strikes by Anirudh Thapa and Jason Cummings ensured three points for the Mariners from this clash. In the 12th minute, Thapa displayed impressive positional awareness to get to the end of a corner kick, squabbling against the Hyderabad FC defenders to net the ball in and get an early lead for the home side.

Cummings’ goal in the added time of the first half must have brought many a smile to the Mohun Bagan Super Giant faithful, with the Australian forward tapping in a squared up pass by the tireless Manvir Singh.

Manvir used his burst of pace to beat the opposition’s backline and then laid a fairly straightforward low ball for Cummings, who didn’t blink twice before depositing it past Gurmeet Singh to double his team’s lead. Hyderabad FC and their inexperienced unit didn’t have much to do in the second session of the game.

Joseph Sunny and Amon Lepcha tested their luck in different phases of the half from outside the 18-yard box. However, none of those shots were troublesome for Vishal Kaith, with only four of their efforts throughout the game landing on target. Mohun Bagan Super Giant will play their next game against FC Goa on February 14, while Hyderabad FC will lock horns with East Bengal FC in their forthcoming fixture on February 17.

Ranji Trophy: Tanay puts Hyderabad on course for big victory

The spinner scalps seven wicket against Nagaland

Hyderabad: Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan spun a web around Nagaland by scalping seven wickets to put Hyderabad on course for another crushing victory on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group semifinal match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.

The off-spinner, who is leading the charts in the bowlers list for Hyderabad, continued his rampaging form with a 7/63 figures to skittle out Nagaland to 206 runs in their first innings to give hosts a commanding first innings lead of 256 runs. Hyderabad declared their innings at 462/8 in 107 overs. The hosts enforced follow-on on Nagaland who ended the day at 20/1, trailing by massive 236 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 383/5, Hyderabad added another 79 runs losing three wickets in the day before declaring their innings. Overnight batter Pragnay Reddy scored a 62-ball 47 to take his side past 450-run mark before being dismissed. Tanay also chipped in with a useful 22-run knock. For the visitors, Karan Tewatia and Rongsen Jonathan scalped two wickets each.

In reply, Nagaland didn’t have the best of starts as they lost two wickets for eight runs. Ravi Teja first dismissed opener Yugandhar Singh and then Sedezhalie Rupero cheaply in the innings third and fifth over to give a perfect start. From there on, it was all Tanay who dictated the terms. Barring Joshua Ozukum (50), RS Jaganath Srinivas (44), Rongsen Jonathan (41) and Sumit Kumar (38), others failed to make any contributions with the bat. Tanay struck twin blows in the 52nd over dismissing Ozukum and Sumit Kumar to put paid to their hopes.

Did selectors drop Shreyas Iyer despite his recovery from injury?

Hyderabad: The omission of Shreyas Iyer’s name from the squad announced for the remaining Test matches against England has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts and analysts.

Initial reports suggested that Iyer was left out due to back issues, as communicated to the selectors. However, emerging details indicate that his recent underwhelming performances might have led to his exclusion from the Indian squad.

In his last two Test appearances, Iyer managed scores of 34, 13, 27, and 29, raising concerns about his form. Despite these speculations, there remains a lack of clarity regarding the exact reason behind his absence.

Examining Shreyas Iyer’s Test career, he made a memorable debut against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021, where he scored a century, instantly making a mark.

However, in his subsequent outings, he failed to sustain that momentum. He amassed only 187 runs across seven Test matches in 2023.

Here’s the squad for final three Tests against England: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (WK), KS Bharat (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.
