4th Test: Jurel’s terrific 90 power India to 307 as England take slender 46-run lead

India’s Dhruv Jurel celebrates his fifty runs on the third day of the fourth cricket test match between England and India in Ranchi.

Ranchi: Dhruv Jurel smashed a terrific 90 under pressure, also his first fifty in the format, as India made 307 in their first innings, with England taking a slender 46-run lead at lunch on day three of the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium on Sunday.

India began day three with 134 runs behind, but Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav (28 off 131 balls) shared a crucial 76-run stand for the eighth wicket to help the hosts fight back in the match. Though Kuldeep later became James Anderson’s 698th Test scalp, Jurel, playing just his second Test, survived a caught-out chance on 59 to be the top-scorer in India’s innings.

He impressed with his compact batting and judicious shot-selection at the crease, while exhibiting calm temperament, application and maturity of taking the team out of trouble in challenging conditions. Though he missed out on a maiden Test century by ten runs, Jurel’s knock, laced with six fours and four sixes, helped India cross 300 and narrow the deficit to 46.

The session began with Jurel and Kuldeep being watchful with England taking the second new ball. Jurel got going with a lovely straight drive off Ollie Robinson, followed by Kuldeep driving Bashir square off the wicket for another boundary. But in a bid to defend off Anderson, Kuldeep inside-edged to his front foot and the ball rolled over to hit the stumps.

Jurel marched forward to get his maiden Test fifty with a single through mid-on off Tom Hartley, and from there he began his attacking show. He swept Hartley with ease for four, and survived being out on 59 when Bashir spilled a catch at mid-wicket off Anderson.

Bashir came under attack by Jurel, who lofted and muscled him for two sixes and a four. He was also taken for a six over mid-wicket by Akash Deep, but Bashir had the last laugh by trapping the batter lbw after surviving a stumping appeal.

It gave Bashir his first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Jurel then pulled and smacked Hartley for six and four respectively, but was clean bowled by the left-arm spinner, who got one to angle in and spin past the outside edge to hit the stumps.

Brief Scores: England 353 in 104.5 overs lead India 307 in 103.2 overs (Dhruv Jurel 90, Yashasvi Jaiswal 73; Shoaib Bashir 5-119, Tom Hartley 3-68) by 46 runs

Premier League: Arsenal crushes Newcastle, keeps pace with title rivals

London: Arsenal claimed sixth straight win with impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle United to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Their margin of victory also means they have the best goal difference in the league and have only scored one fewer goal than Liverpool.

Arsenal produced a blistering start, scoring twice inside the opening 24 minutes. On 18 minutes Gabriel’s header from a corner was saved well by Karius, but Livramento kicked the loose ball against Sven Botman and it crossed the line before Karius was able to palm it away.

Six minutes later Kai Havertz scored for a second successive league match when he swept in Gabriel Martinelli’s low cross.

Arsenal were outstanding in the first half, suffocating Newcastle, who had only one touch in the Arsenal box and failed to register a shot in the opening 45 minutes for the first time since March 2014 against Southampton.

Havertz had a glorious opportunity to grab his second inside the opening 90 seconds of the second half when a flowing move put him through on goal but he somehow screwed his shot wide.

Newcastle were showing more threat and Isak had their best chance so far when put in on goal at an angle but David Raya did well to slow him down and Arsenal cleared. Anthony Gordon registered their first shot in the 49th minute, but it was straight at Raya.

But shortly after Eddie Howe had made two substitutions in an effort to find a goal back, Newcastle conceded a third. Bukayo Saka received the ball on the right edge of the area, cut in and then stepped back before curling the ball into the far corner.

Four minutes later it was 4-0 as Declan Rice’s inswinging corner was flicked in by Jakub Kiwior with a deflection off Lewis Miley.

Newcastle claimed a consolation goal as substitute Dan Burn marauded down the left and crossed for fellow sub Joe Willock to score a superb header against his former club.

After the loss Newcastle remain eighth with 37 points but have won only 11 points from their last 12 matches.

90% of young Indian women have Iron deficiency: Doctors

Low iron levels often go unnoticed by many women, who may mistake symptoms such as fatigue and weakness for other issues.

90% of young Indian women have Iron deficiency: Doctors

New Delhi: Iron deficiency is a widespread issue among young women, affecting around 90 per cent in India, said doctors on Sunday, calling the need for timely detection of the condition.

Many women experience low iron levels without realising it, often attributing symptoms like fatigue and weakness to other causes.

Iron deficiency is a common nutritional shortfall that occurs when the body doesn’t have enough iron to support its functions.

This essential mineral plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout the body, maintaining healthy red blood cells, and supporting overall energy levels.

Without adequate iron, individuals may experience fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and impaired cognitive function.

“Iron deficiency among young women is a growing concern that is often overlooked. Despite efforts to promote healthy eating and supplementation, 90 per cent of young women still struggle with insufficient iron levels,” Dr Rajesh Bendre, National Technical Head and Chief Pathologist Apollo Diagnostics, told IANS.

He said factors such menstrual blood loss, restrictive diets, and heavy reliance on processed foods are behind the rise in iron deficiency among women.

Further the doctor noted that the lack of education about iron-rich food sources and dietary requirements exacerbates the problem.

“It is crucial to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining adequate iron levels and provide accessible resources for proper nutrition education,” he said.

Many pregnant women also suffer from iron deficiency, leading to low hemoglobin, anaemia, and its associated symptoms such as weakness, shortness of breath, and pale skin, the expert said.

“Iron deficiency in many pregnant women is a pressing concern that can have far-reaching consequences. Beyond the immediate health risks to the mother, such as anemia and fatigue, iron deficiency during pregnancy can also hinder foetal development. Inadequate iron levels in expecting mothers may increase the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, which can impact a child’s long-term health and cognitive development, ” Dr Bendre said.

Addressing iron deficiency in pregnant women goes beyond simply supplementing with iron pills. Experts should educate women about the importance of regular prenatal check-ups to monitor their iron levels throughout pregnancy, enabling timely intervention if deficiencies arise.

“Anaemia is one of the most widespread public health problems and has important health and welfare, social, and economic consequences. These include reduced hours at work, poor concentration and low self-esteem causing impaired development and in severe cases increased risk of death in pregnant patients, especially around the time of delivery. About 50 to 60 percent of pregnant women are found to be deficient in iron,” Dr Abhya Bhave, Haematologist, Lilavati Hospital told IANS.

The incidence of anaemia in our population is high, especially in the student and marriageable age group.

Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anaemia due to poor nutrition or poor food intake, worm infestation of the intestine, intestinal blood loss, and blood loss during periods.

“Iron deficiency anaemia can have sinister reasons in the intestines including rare malignancies or malabsorption syndromes that will need a different line of treatment to prevent its recurrence. There are other causes of anaemia such as Vit B12 and folic acid deficiency, poor production in the bone marrow, and excessive destruction,” Bhave said.

According to Dr. Kekin Gala, Gynecologist, Apollo Spectra Mumbai, fatigue and general weakness are often the first signs of iron deficiency.

“Paying attention to your menstrual cycle can also be important in diagnosis, as heavy periods can lead to iron loss and subsequent deficiency. Screening tests for iron deficiency include a complete blood count (CBC), and additional tests such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation can provide more specific information about iron levels in the body. Regular monitoring through these tests not only provides insight into current iron status but also supports preventative efforts against more severe complications associated with untreated deficiency,” Gala said.

In addition to supplements, Gala emphasised the need to incorporate iron-rich foods like spinach, and lentils into daily diet to help replenish iron levels naturally while also improving overall nutrition.

FC Barcelona cruises, Atletico held in Almeria: LaLiga

Madrid: FC Barcelona produced one of their most assured displays of the season to beat Getafe 4-0 and to move into second place in LaLiga, five points behind Real Madrid, who play on Sunday and ahead of Girona’s whose game is on Monday night.

Raphinha opened the scoring in the 20th minute and could have had two more before halftime as Barca dominated their rivals well below usual level.

Joao Felix made it 2-0 eight minutes into the second half, and Frenkie de Jong added a third just after the hour to assure the win, with Fermin Lopez scoring the fourth in the last minute to round off a successful afternoon, Xinhua reports.

Atletico Madrid, who were without the injured Antoine Griezmann, dropped two points to bottom-of-the-table Almeria, who continue to give sides trouble despite being virtually assured of relegation.

Angel Correa put Atletico ahead in the first minute, but Luka Romero equalized in the 56th minute and the Almeria forward scored again after 64 minutes after Rodrigo de Paul had again put Atletico in front.

Alaves and Mallorca drew 1-1 with a result that keeps the home side well clear of the relegation zone. Carlos Benavidez headed Alaves ahead in the 75th minute but Nemanja Nastasic gave Mallorca a morale boost ahead of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal return leg when he nodded home an equalizer two minutes from time.

On Friday night Santi Comesana scored twice as Villarreal won 3-1 away to Real Sociedad.

The former Rayo Vallecano midfielder netted a 17th minute header and then slid home after poor defending early in the second half and although Mikel Merino pulled a goal back for the home side with five minutes left to play, Alexander Sorloth turned to fire home in the 95th minute to kill off any hopes of a point for his former club.

The scheduled game between Granada and Valencia was postponed because of a massive fire in Valencia, which claimed 10 lives on Thursday.

Phil Foden’s goal helps Man City beat Bournemouth, narrow gap on Liverpool

Bournemouth: Phil Foden’s first-half strike proved enough to give City a hard-fought 1-0 win against Bournemouth to close the gap on leaders Liverpool to one point.

City struck on 24 minutes after fine work by Erling Haaland, who saw his shot parried into Foden‘s path and the England star swept the ball home late on Saturday night.

Though City dominated most of the first half, Bournemouth came on strongly after the break and had two chances cleared off the line.

City dominated the early exchanges and should have led after nine minutes when Erling Haaland was played through on goal by Foden but the Norwegian shot wide of a post. Moments later Kerkez produced a strike from 25 yards that Ederson had to tip over, Premier League reports.

City’s superiority eventually told in the 24th minute as Haaland turned Marcos Senesi and fired a bouncing shot that Neto could only parry into the path of Foden, who converted from close range for his ninth goal of the season.

Just before half-time Ederson was called into action again to save a long-range strike from Ryan Christie.

Bournemouth showed greater threat in the second half, having nine shots to City’s six. Marcus Tavernier scuffed an effort from a good position inside the box before then dragging his shot wide of the right post.

Dominic Solanke was inches away from bringing Bournemouth level as his back-post header from a corner was beaten away by Ederson from the goalline.

Neto then superbly blocked Haaland’s effort before the Man City forward was replaced by Alvarez. As the match entered stoppage time, Bournemouth substitute Enes Unal headed narrowly wide against his former team.

Then another Bournemouth cross just missed its target as the Cherries were unable to find the goal that would have stopped City from an eighth successive away victory in all competitions.

A seventh match without victory drops Bournemouth a place to 14th on 28 points, eight clear of the bottom three.

4th Test: ‘Trying to keep in mind what my team needs’, says Yashasvi Jaiswal

Ranchi: Since his Test debut against the West Indies last year, Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a roller-coaster ride in the format, which has now seen him be the leading run-getter in the ongoing series against England.

Jaiswal attributes his good run in Tests to keeping in mind what the needs of his team are in a particular match. “It’s been really nice and really challenging to play on different types of pitches.

“I speak a lot with Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma about how I can change my style throughout the innings and try to make sure that I am always playing for the team and what the team needs,” he said in a chat with broadcasters ahead of day three’s play in the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium on Sunday.

In India’s first innings, Jaiswal made 73 before being bowled by Shoaib Bashir. During the course of his innings, he became only the fifth Indian to score 600 or more runs in a Test series, joining the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid and Dilip Sardesai to achieve this momentous feat.

“I love changing my game and I love challenging myself depending on the match situation and what it needs. I am learning every day in net sessions and from talking to my senior players. I look forward to learning all the time. It’s going really well and I am looking forward to the rest of the game. We will give it everything and I will enjoy every part of the game,” he concluded.

Bayern Munich ends losing streak, overpowers Leipzig in Bundesliga

Berlin: Bayern Munich returned to winning ways and ended its three-game losing run after Harry Kane’s last-gasp 2-1 winner stunned resilient Leipzig in the 23rd round.

The struggling German giants started powerfully and pressed Leipzig onto the back foot as goalkeeper Janis Blaswich tipped Kane’s header to the woodwork in the fifth minute before denying Leroy Sane’s effort from a tight angle at the half-hour mark on Saturday night.

Leipzig couldn’t do damage to Bayern’s defence while Kane and Sane produced half chances in the closing stages of the first half, reports Xinhua.

The Red Bull piled on the pressure after the restart as Neuer had to defuse the efforts from Amadou Haidara, Mohamed Simakan and Xavi in quick succession.

Bayern punished Leipzig’s wastefulness in front of the target and opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Jamal Musiala’s good build-up work allowed Kane to tap home from a sharp angle.

Leipzig remained unimpressed though and continued to create chances, but Benjamin Sesko lacked in accuracy twice at the hour mark.

Sesko remained in the thick of things and eventually restored parity in the 70th minute after Leon Goretzka deflected the shot from the Slovenian striker, leaving Neuer hapless.

The hosts remained active and dangerous as Kane headed over the target from a promising position before England’s record goalscorer wrapped his brace and his 27th goal of the season to flabbergast Leipzig in injury time.

With the result, second placed Bayern sit eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen while fifth-placed Leipzig missed the chance to jump into the top four.

“We played very well in the first half but failed to score. We then scored in the second half just when Leipzig was taking over. Leipzig is a strong side and made it an evenly balanced encounter. Overall, a deserved victory for us,” commented Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

In the other matches, Stuttgart’s four-game winning streak came to an end as struggling Cologne snatched a 1-1 draw thanks to Eric Martel’s equalizer.

Borussia Monchengladbach trashed Bochum 5-2 to record the sixth win of the season.

Heidenheim secured a 2-2 draw at Berlin while last-placed Darmstadt played out a 1-1 stalemate with Werder Bremen.

Rourkela: The Indian men’s team suffered a heartbreaking 0-3 defeat in the shootout to nemesis Australia in its FIH Pro League match here on Saturday.

Australia also earned a bonus point for the win. India were on their way to humble the mighty Australian team and end their unbeaten run in the Odisha leg until Craig Tom scored in the fourth and final quarter to take the match into the shootout.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh (20th minute) and Amit Rohidas (29th minute) scored for the home team, while Govers Blake and Tom (53rd minute) found the target for the visiting Australian team in regulation time.

In the shootout, Tim Brand, Ogilvie and Tom Wickham scored for Australia, but Akashdeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay missed their attempts for India.

In search of an equaliser after trailing 1-2, Australia launched into a wave of attacks, but the Indian defence was equal to the task, with veteran goalkeeper S Sreejesh pulling off a brilliant with just a few minutes left for the final hooter.

However, Tom found Australia’s much-needed equaliser with a field goal to send the match into the shootout, where India came a cropper. The Indians had squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-6 to the Kookaburras earlier this month in Bhubaneswar.
