The entire family is built on cricket and to facilitate my career: R Ashwin

New Delhi: Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed the aftermath when he had to fly back home due to a medical emergency in the family during the third Test at Rajkot.

Ashwin had to withdraw from the second Test after day two’s play because of a family medical emergency and missed day three’s play entirely, with the statement of his overnight withdrawal from the match.

Ashwin had picked his 500th Test wicket in the form of England opener Zak Crawley on day two of the third Test in Rajkot becoming the second fastest to the milestone.

However, Ashwin rejoined the squad on day 4 of the third Test after being unavailable for the third day.

Ashwin in an interview with ESPNcricinfo The Cricket Monthly shed light on the day’s event and termed it as the most nervous moment of his career.

“The entire family is built on cricket and to facilitate my career. It hasn’t been easy. It has been very hard on them. It’s been a big roller-coaster for them – going through the emotions and ups and downs that I myself do.

I am sure most parents and families are like that, but my parents’ lives are even more intertwined with my cricket.”

“I mean, I’m in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me,” he added.

It makes sense that Ashwin mentioned his parents, wife, and mother in particular when discussing his incredible accomplishment of passing his 100th Test.

The seasoned spinner acknowledged and gave gratitude for the sacrifices his family has made along the way.

“Anything and everything around what I have to do, or what my cricket is like, it’s very seamlessly attached to them. They have eliminated anything that comes in the way of my cricket. That has been the sole purpose of their lives ever since I can remember,” he added.

“It is very difficult to find a family like me, my dad and mom. I’ve forgotten to add two other members: my grandfather and my aunt. We used to live in a joint family. For about eight years, my granddad used to bring my cricket kit, my cricket clothes, milk and all and just stand outside the ground or spread a newspaper and sit on the ground, and make sure that everything was going right, because both my parents were working. If I came back home, my aunt would be the caretaker. She would provide what I needed.”

During the fifth and final Test against England in Dharamshala, starting from March 7, Ashwin will be playing his 100th match in the longer format of the game.

In the third Test of the ongoing series in Rajkot, Ashwin became only the ninth and second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to clinch 500 Test wickets joining the elite club of bowlers such as Muthiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Kumble, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh and Nathan Lyon.

In addition, he broke the 350-wicket barrier in home Tests and surpassed Kumble to become India’s top wicket-taker.

Ashwin has claimed 507 wickets in 99 Test matches, 156 wickets in 116 ODIs, and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is.

Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks into top 10 in ICC rankings for Test batters

Dubai: Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Wednesday broke into the top-10 of the ICC rankings for Test batters for the first time in his career on the back of his tremendous form in the ongoing home series against England.

Jaiswal, who made his Test debut in 2023, jumped two places to be at 10th spot with 727 rating points to his kitty.

In red-hot form with the bat against England, Jaiswal has already created history by joining an exclusive club of Indian batters to have scored 600 and more runs in a Test series.

He is the lone left-handed batter to have achieved the feat. The 22-year-old is only the fifth Indian ever to have crossed the 600-run mark in a Test series with others being Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Sardesai, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli.

With 655 runs in four Tests at 93.57 which includes two fifties and as many centuries — both converted into double hundreds — Jaiswal could well be targeting the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s record of most runs (774) for any Indian batter in a Test series.

Meanwhile, a fine knock of 131 in Rajkot in the third Test against England has propelled Rohit Sharma to the 11th spot with the Indian skipper moving up two positions.

Star batter Virat Kohli, who has missed the entire five-Test series against England, also moved up one spot to be at eighth.

Among the top three batters, Joe Root replaced Steve Smith at the second spot after the English batter scored a quality century in the fourth Test in Ranchi but the Australian’s struggle persisting for big scores at the opening slot.

A loss in form with the bat for Marnus Labuschagne meant the right-handed Australian batter slipped as many as five positions after twin failures in the Wellington Test against New Zealand.

Among bowlers, India’s Ravindra Jadeja slipped one spot to be at seventh but Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon both moved up in the rankings to get to fourth and sixth respectively, following Australia’s huge win by 172 runs over New Zealand.

WPL: Lanning, Jemimah shine in DC’s 29-run win over MI

Delhi Capitals batter Jemimah Rodrigues plays a shot during the WPL clash against Mumbai Indians.

New Delhi: Skipper Meg Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues smashed commanding fifties as Delhi Capitals thrashed Mumbai Indians by 29 runs in a top-of-the-table clash of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) here on Tuesday.

Sent in to bat, Lanning fired at the top with a 38-ball 53, while Jemimah hit an entertaining 33-ball 69 to provide the late acceleration as DC racked up a massive 192 for 4 after the WPL juggernaut moved to the national capital amid lukewarm response.

Mumbai Indians’ chase never took off, ending up with a 163 for 8 despite Amanjot Kaur’s 42 off 27 and Hayley Matthews’ 29 off 17 as the defending champions crashed to their second defeat in five matches and only second against DC in WPL history.

This was Delhi’s fourth win on the trot as they moved two points clear of Mumbai with eight points from five matches. DC thus consolidated their position at the top with the win which will act like a balm for the home team, which had suffered a heartbreaking last-ball loss to the MI in the tournament opener.

In contrast to the roaring success in the first leg, the first game of the Delhi leg saw a sparse crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium which build up as the match wore on but still couldn’t match the ‘crowd energy’ of Bengaluru. The hosts, however, put on a show with their bowlers producing a clinical display while defending the total.

Returning after missing the last game, Marizanne Kapp once again did the damage in the powerplay, taking two wickets — Yastika Bhatia (6) and Harmanpreet Kaur (6), while fellow pacer Shikha Pandey cleaned up Nat Sciver-Brunt (5) to leave MI on shaky grounds.

Opener Matthews made a strokeful 17-ball 29 before being caught by Alice Capsey off left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (3/21), while 19-year-old pacer Titas Sadhu removed Amelia Kerr (17) as MI lost half their side in 9th over.

The 23-year-old Amanjot smacked seven fours on way to her 42 to give a tinge of hope but once she was castled by Jonassen, the runrate kept piling up and it became too tall a task. Earlier, opener Lanning hit the ball across the ropes six times and twice over it en route to her third half-century, and added three useful partnerships to anchor the DC innings for the most part.

Later Jemimah smashed 8 fours and 3 sixes to take DC close to the 200-mark. Shafali Verma (28) and Alice Capsey (19) too chipped in with quick cameos. Pacer Shabnim Ismail, who had missed last two games, was put under the pump by Shafali, who carted her for two fours.

Lanning, on the other hand, blasted the first maximum, flicking Sciver-Brunt over long on, and then hit a four before surviving a LBW appeal in the fourth over which yielded 14 runs. Shafali then clobbered Ismail for back-to-back sixes but the bowler had her caught behind as Delhi reached 56 for one in six overs.

Capsey added 31 with Lanning, hitting three boundaries before dragging one on to the stumps while trying a reverse slap. Lanning carried on and plundered two fours and a six off Amelia Kerr, who conceded 20 runs in that over, as DC crossed the 100-mark.

The skipper completed her fifty in 36 balls with a four off Pooja Vastrakar in 13th over but perished a ball later with Kerr claiming the vital catch. Mumbai tried to pull things back thereafter but Jemimah upped the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries as DC scored 69 in last five overs. She reached her fifty with a six off Sciver-Brunt in the 19th over.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 192/4 (Jemimah Rodrigues 69, Meg Lanning 53) bt Mumbai Indians 163/8 (Amanjot Kaur 42; Jess Jonassen 3/21).
