Hyderabad: India seized control on the opening day of the fifth Test against England in Dharamshala, thanks to stellar performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Captain Rohit Sharma.

Spin maestro Kuldeep Yadav’s sensational 5-72 and Ravichandran Ashwin’s 4-51 orchestrated England’s downfall as they were bowled out for 218 in 57.4 overs.

In reply, Jaiswal’s aggressive 57 and Rohit’s unbeaten 52 propelled India to 135/1 in 30 overs at stumps, trailing England by 83 runs. Jaiswal’s explosive batting set records, becoming the quickest Indian to reach 1000 Test runs and surpassing Virat Kohli’s series run record against England.

The day began with England’s Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett facing a challenging spell from Bumrah and Siraj. Crawley fought hard for his 79, but Kuldeep’s mesmerizing spin triggered a dramatic collapse in the English batting order.

His mix of googlies and leg-breaks left England floundering, reminiscent of Nathan Lyon’s historic performance in Dharamshala. India’s reply saw Jaiswal showcasing his attacking prowess with three sixes off Shoaib Bashir, reaching his fifty and setting records in the process.

Rohit Sharma’s aggressive play further solidified India’s position, ending the day with a commanding lead. Shoaib Bashir claimed Jaiswal’s wicket, but not before the young batsman had left an indelible mark on the day’s play.

Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes second quickest Indian to score 1000 runs in Test cricket

Dharamsala: India’s star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on Thursday completed 1000 runs in the Test and with this achievement he became the second fastest Indian to reach thousand Test runs. He achieved the milestone during the fifth and final match of the series against England at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday as he slammed a boundary off Shoaib Bashir in the 15th over.

In terms of innings, the young opener is the second-fastest – 16 – after Vinod Kambli, who accomplished the feat in 14 innings. 22 years, 70 days old Jaiswal is now the fourth youngest batter to cross the 1000 runs in the Test mark and joined the elite list of legends like Sachin Tendulkar (19Y, 217D), Kapil Dev (21Y, 27D), Ravi Shastri (21Y, 197D), and Dilip Vengsarkar (22Y, 293D).

Recapping Day One of the fifth Test, after Ravichandran Ashwin cleared off England’s tail end, Rohit began the session dealing in boundaries putting the pressure back on England’s bowling unit.

Jaiswal took his time to settle on the crease and went on to join Rohit in his quest to provide an ideal stand to the hosts.

The young left-handed batter took the onus from the skipper to ensure India’s healthy run-rate was maintained.

He raced to his half-century in 55 balls with a delightful boundary. With a slog sweep on the next ball, Jasiwal once again picked up a boundary showing no signs of stopping.

After conceding back-to-back boundaries, Bashir struck back on the next delivery, deceived the southpaw to get him stumped on a score of 57(58). India will resume their innings on Day 2 action with captain Rohit Sharma (52*) and Shubman Gill (26*) standing unbeaten in the middle.

IND vs ENG, 5th Test: Crawley’s fifty drives England past 100 (Day 1, Lunch)

Dharamsala: An attacking half-century by opener Zak Crawley and his half-century partnership with Ben Duckett helped England end the first session on high, with a score of 100/2 on day one of the fifth and final Test against India at Dharamshala on Thursday.

At Lunch, England was 100/2, with Crawley (61* in 71 balls, with nine fours and a six) unbeaten at the crease.

During the first ten overs, England was off to a cautious start, with Zak being the aggressor. Duckett struggled to get more boundaries and played a very unusual defensive game. England scored just 35 runs in their first ten overs.

Duckett’s sweep shot on a delivery by Ravichandran Ashwin, playing his 100th Test took England to 50-run mark in 14.2 overs.

The duo tried to attack spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the 18th over, smashing a boundary each, but the spinner had the last laugh, removing Duckett (27 in 58 balls, with four boundaries). Shubman Gill took a fine diving catch running from the cover region. England was 64/1.

Ollie Pope was next up on the crease. He held the other end while Crawley freely attacked the spinners. He reached his half-century, his fourth of the series in 64 balls, with nine boundaries.

England reached the 100-run mark in 25.1 overs.

Just when it seemed that the duo of Pope and Crawley would build something big, Pope was dismissed by Kuldeep, with Dhruv Jurel pulling off a brilliant stumping. England was 100/2 in 25.3 overs, ending the first session.

Kuldeep (2/22) was the pick of the bowlers for India.

England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first during the fifth and final Test against India at Dharamsala’s Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium on Thursday.

India has already won the series 3-1. England, having lost their first series under skipper Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum’s leadership, are playing for their pride. Despite the series being decided, there are valuable 12 ICC World Test Championship points up for grabs. This is also the 100th Test match for Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin and England batter Jonny Bairstow.

Ashwin joined an elite list of players with his 100th appearance in Test match for India during the fifth Test against England at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday.

India head coach Rahul Dravid presented a special memento to Ashwin on the occasion of his 100th Test match

During the third Test in Rajkot, Ashwin became only the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to clinch 500 Test wickets joining the elite club of bowlers such as Muthiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Kumble, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh and Nathan Lyon.

He also became only the second bowler after Muralidaran to achieve 500 wickets in less than 100 Test matches.

Only Nathan Lyon (527 wickets) has claimed more wickets than him in the format, making him one of the most prolific modern-day Test bowlers.

Ashwin recorded his 35th five-wicket haul in Test cricket in the Ranchi Test, equalling Kumble’s record for the most five-fors by an Indian in Test cricket.

India great Sachin Tendulkar, with 200 Test matches, holds the record for most appearances in the format internationally.

WPL: Mooney, Wolvaardt fashion Gujarat Giant’s first win of season

WPL: Mooney, Wolvaardt fashion Gujarat Giant’s first win of season

Gujarat Giants’ Laura Wolvaardt celebrates her half-century during the clash.

New Delhi: Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney were in their elements as Gujarat Giants recorded a comfortable 19-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore to log home their first points after four defeats in the Women’s Premier League here on Wednesday.

Wolvaardt was at her free-flowing best, while skipper Mooney was equally regal as Gujarat Giants finally put up a splendid batting show, posting a challenging 199 for 5 riding on an opening stand of 140 in 13 overs. Having brought up the rear in points table so far, Gujarat Giants openers Wolvaardt (76 off 45 balls) and Mooney (85 not out off 51 balls) hit 25 boundaries between them apart from a six.

In reply, RCB never seemed in the hunt as they managed only 180 for 8 with none of their top batters being able to convert solid starts. This was RCB’s third defeat in six games and they were outplayed in all departments of the game.

RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana (24 off 16 balls) started cautiously but then launched into rookie spinner Tanuja Kanwer, lofting her effortlessly over long-on for two sixes followed by a boundary behind square. However Ashleigh Gardner deceived Mandhana with a flighted delivery that ought to have been played on the front-foot but the Indian women’s team vice-captain went on the backfoot and was trapped plumb in-front.

Her opening partner Sabbhineni Meghana (4 of 13 balls) wasted deliveries galore before a lazy second run found her short of the crease. Once Ellyse Perry (24 off 23) and Sophie Devine (23 off 16 balls) added 32 in just 3.5 overs, there were hopes of revival but the latter was bowled going for an ugly hoick.

RCB’s challenge was literally over when seamer Kathryn Bryce sent Perry back with a delivery that pitched slightly back of length and the Australian all-rounder went for a cute reverse ramp but was beautifully snapped by Mooney behind the stumps.

Georgia Wareham (48 off 22 balls) did use the long handle effectively but it was too late in the end. Earlier, it did help that RCB bowlers couldn’t hit the right length on a Feroz Shah Kotla belter, as right-handed Wolvaardt and left-handed Mooney muscled the half-trackers during the Powerplay overs.

Both Sophie Devine (0/37 in 3 overs) and Renuka Thakur (0/34 in 4 overs) bowled too full as Mooney played some crisp cover drives while Wolvaardt also launched into Thakur with some beastly pulls. Wolvaardt hit 13 boundaries as she rocked back to pull the likes of leg-spinner Asha Sobhana (0/11 in 1 over) and former India left-arm spinner Ekta Bist (0/31 in 3 overs), while Devine did play some deft shots gliding a few past short third-man.

Once Wolvaardt was run-out, Mooney teamed up with Phoebe Litchfield (18) to add 52 runs in just 5.3 overs, but the Gujarat skipper remained stranded at the non-striker’s end with seven runs being added off last 10 balls with as many as four dismissals. Mooney, on her part, hit 12 fours and a huge six over mid-wicket.

Brief Scores: Gujarat Giants 199/5 (Laura Wolvaardt 76, Beth Mooney 85) bt Royal Challenger Bangalore 180/8 (Georgia Wareham 48; Ashleigh Gardner 2/23). PTI
