Premier league: Liverpool, Man City draw 1-1, Arsenal tops table

Liverpool: Liverpool and Manchester City drew 1-1 at Anfield to leave Arsenal in charge of the Premier League title race.

John Stones finished a clever corner routine by Kevin De Bruyne to give City a first half lead but Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty after the break ensured a point apiece. Sunday’s draw ended Man City’s run of nine away wins in a row in all competitions, and means Liverpool have lost only one of their last 21 home Premier League matches against City.

The result, which summed up the unyielding rivalry between the Blues and the Reds under Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, meant the day ended with Arsenal on top of the table on 64 points after their late victory over Brentford yesterday, Liverpool a place back in second on goal difference and City third on 63 points.

It points to a tight, tense finale to the 2023/24 campaign with City aiming to win the title for a record-breaking fourth consecutive time, Liverpool wanting to give their manager the ultimate send-off and Arsenal looking to exorcise the ghosts of last season and win their first Premier League in 20 years.

Man City started on top and made their dominance count midway through the first half, when Stones scored from a clever Kevin De Bruyne corner.

De Bruyne whipped the ball to the near post, where Stones was left unmarked after Nathan Ake had blocked Mac Allister in a smart screen move.

Then Liverpool saw a goal disallowed after Nunez, who had strayed offside, squared for Luis Diaz to apply the finishing touch but, just as the balance of play had evened out, City struck through Stones, who stole in at the near post to convert De Bruyne’s corner.

Szoboszlai miscued his header after he’d been found by a superb Harvey Elliott cross at the conclusion of a patient, probing sequence of passing and – after Erling Haaland had seen an effort on the counter saved by Kelleher – Diaz whipped a shot narrowly wide following a turnover.

Just two minutes into the second period, Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Nunez’s pace allowed him to intercept Nathan Ake’s backpass ahead of Ederson and the City goalkeeper duly clattered into the No.9.

A lengthy delay ensued as Ederson, who later went off injured, received treatment but Mac Allister’s composure never wavered and he stepped up to bury his spot-kick into the top corner.

Klopp brought on Salah, who almost immediately made his mark. The Egyptian played an incredible through-ball to Luis Diaz, who shot wide in a 1v1 with Ortega.

Less than two minutes later, Diaz missed another big chance, failing to get his shot off in another 1v1 after being set up by Darwin Nunez.

There were two more big chances at either end, with Kelleher spreading himself in an Alisson-like action to thwart Phil Foden, while Ortega flung himself at Nunez’s close-range effort.

But it was City who came the closest to winning it. In the 89th minute, Doku’s shot from the left side of the box beat Kelleher, smashed against a post and bounced across goal and out.

It was the last meaningful chance of an absorbing contest featuring 29 shots, 19 of which came from Liverpool, who also edged possession.

Tennis: Alcaraz, Sinner, Tsitsipas advance to Indian Wells fourth round

Indian Wells: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz scored a 6-2, 6-3 third-round victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime to extend his Indian Wells winning streak to eight matches, continuing his bid to advance to the semifinals for the third straight year in the desert.

Alcaraz smothered Auger-Aliassime and broke for 3-2 in the first set. His serve often presented him the opportunities to attack early in rallies. The defense remains. Offering up a defensive lob midway in the second set, Auger-Aliassime erred on a smash and couldn’t believe it.

The Spaniard broke for 1-0 in the second and Auger-Aliassime did well to keep the set close thereafter. He saved break points at 1-3 and escaped from deuce at 2-4. But Alcaraz got the second break, which happened to be the match, when Auger-Aliassime sent a forehand into the net.

Next up for the Alcaraz is a fourth-round showdown with Fabian Marozsan, a chance for Alcaraz to avenge his shock defeat to the Hungarian last May in Rome.

On the other hand, the Italian Jannik Sinner cruised past 25th seed Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon to reach the and extend his winning streak to 17 matches.

Sinner is undefeated in 2024 (14-0) and behind titles at the Australian Open and Rotterdam is up to No. 2 in the ATP Live Rankings.

He will face 16th seed Ben Shelton or 22nd seed Francisco Cerundolo for a place in the quarterfinals.

In another action, Stefanos Tsitsipas toppled Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-3 to sail into the fourth round for the first time since 2021.

He will next play Jiri Lehecka, who ousted Andre Rublev with straight sets 6-4, 6-4 win.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty triumph in BWF French Open final

Paris: The World No. 1 badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty called the BWF French Open final victory at Paris a sweet one as they played really good badminton at this venue.

Satwiksairaj-Chirag defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan 21-11, 21-17 on Sunday.

After clinching the title, Satwik opened up on his unique dance celebration which both the players performed. The ace shuttler asserted that they have started celebrating like this from the Thomas Cup.
“It all started from Thomas Cup and it became a habit and it has been a long time since we danced. It is after fourth finals. We just wanted to go and have fun and let them earn points and the match. We wanted to give our 100 percent and enjoy. Even Mathias (Boe) kept telling us to have fun and we got back our rhythm and the momentum changed,” Satwik said after the match.

Further, Chirag spoke about their opponents Taipei’s Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan. He admitted that although their rankings are not that high they are good players and they didn’t take them lightly during the whole game.

“They had some good weeks, they have beaten some good oppositions, and we knew we can’t take them lightly, their ranking might not be high but they have always been a formidable game. So we are happy that we could take that first game and after initial jittery take the second as well,” Chirag asserted.
In the end, Chirag talked about their participation in the upcoming edition of the Paris Olympics 2024, which will be played in the same venue as the French Open 2024.

“It feels really sweet. Paris has always been special for us and we have always played good badminton here and it has been a second home for us. It is a test venue for the Olympics but that is still some months away. I would be lying if I said that I am not enjoying that (winning at the Olympic venue) but we won this final. There is another tournament next week, so looking forward to that,” Chirag stated.

Coming to the match, from the start, the Indian pair of Chirag and Satwiksairaj dominated Chinese Taipei’s Lee-Yang. In the first set, Chirag-Satwiksairaj clinched a 21-11 win over their opponents to take an early advantage.

However, Lee-Yang gave a good fight in the second set against the Indian pair. But Chirag-Satwiksairaj were strong enough to hold the pressure and beat their opponents 21-17 in the second set to win the final match.

The victory also marked Satwik and Chirag’s second French Open title.

Earlier in the semi-final round, Rankireddy and Chirag beat the current world champions Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seungjae of South Korea 21-13, 21-16 in two straight games to reach their third French Open final.

The 2022 French Open champions faced a great challenge from the South Koreans in the first game, with scores once level at 5-5. From then on, Satwiksairaj and Chirag won six points on the trot and never looked back from there, as per Olympics.com.

After a convincing win in the first game, Satwiksairaj and Chirag soon gained an upper hand in the second game as well. Though Kang and Seo tried to fight back, the early lead by the Indians helped them win the match in 40 minutes.

Bayer Leverkusen dominates Wolfsburg in Bundesliga

Berlin: Bayer Leverkusen extended their unbeaten streak to 36 matches across all competitions this season, consolidating their 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings with a 2-0 win against Wolfsburg.

The Werkself assumed control from the starting whistle but had to wait until the 22nd minute before Wirtz rattled the left post after Granit Xhaka’s chip into the box.

Wolfsburg also came close three minutes later after Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had to defuse Cedric Zesiger’s 20-meter attempt.

The game tilted further in Leverkusen’s favour 28 minutes in when Wolfsburg’s Moritz Jenz was sent off for receiving a second yellow card. Leverkusen capitalized on the one-man advantage, opening the scoring in the 37th minute through Nathan Tella, who headed in Alejandro Grimaldo’s precise cross.

Wolfsburg had his hands full of work and was lucky in the 40th minute when custodian Koen Casteels neutralized Piero Hincapie’s dangerous header.

In the second half, Leverkusen maintained their dominance, opting for shots from distance that failed to surprise Casteels. However, they sealed the victory in the 86th minute when Wirtz finished off Exequiel Palacios’ excellent pass at the far post.

“It is tough to play against Leverkusen with eleven players, so the game was basically over after the dismissal. We played well until the sent off, but we must get our points from somewhere else,” said Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac.

“We started well. It was important to score after the sent off and to remain patient. We are delighted with the result,” commented Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

In other Bundesliga action, Freiburg ended their six-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Bochum, thanks to goals from Maximilian Eggestein and Michael Gregoritsch, while Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Hoffenheim 3-1.

WPL: Delhi Capitals go top of table with thrilling 1-run victory

WPL: Delhi Capitals go top of table with thrilling 1-run victory

New Delhi: Richa Ghosh hit two monstrous sixes but paid the price for her poor fitness as Delhi Capitals found her short of crease to win a cliffhanger against Royal Challengers by a solitary run in the Women’s Premier League on Sunday.

Needing 17 off last over to reach a target of 182, Richa, who blasted 51 off 29 balls, smote left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen for a 78 metre straight six and another maximum off the penultimate delivery to bring the equation down to two runs off the final delivery. However Richa, not exactly known for being the fittest among Indian cricketers despite brute power in her strokes, wasn’t fast enough to beat Jonassen, who whipped the bails off in a flash to restrict RCB to 180 for 7.

DC, with their fifth win, are now on 10 points and lead the table due to superior net run-rate (+0.918) compared to Mumbai Indians (+.343). Needing 28 off final two overs, Shikha Pandey conceded couple of boundaries but removed Georgia Wareham, leaving left-arm spinner Jonassen to defend 17 in the final over.

Earlier, Jemimah Rodrigues displayed her complete mastery over slow bowlers with a 26-ball half-century that propelled Delhi Capitals to a competitive 181 for 5 in 20 overs. However, young off-spinner Shreyanka Patil grabbed four for 26 in her four overs and was brilliant at the business end of the DC innings to put brakes on the home team’s scoring.

In front of a vociferous holiday crowd, Rodrigues brought out sweeps, cuts, pulls and the exquisite inside-out lofted drive from the closet to score 58 off 34 balls, adding 97 runs in just 10.1 overs for the third wicket with Alice Capsey (48 off 32 balls), who used the long handle to good effect during the slog overs.

This was after Shafali Verma (23 off 18 balls) and Meg Lanning (29 off 26 balls) added 54 for the opening stand but they were then dismissed in quick succession. Rodrigues, not exactly known for her power-hitting, depended on her solid touch play, immaculate timing and deft placements to get eight fours and a six.

The maximum off leg-break bowler Georgia Wareham, imperiously hit over extra cover, brought up her fifty. However, her best shot was the inside out loft that was dispatched to boundary just wide of long-off. She found an able ally in Capsey, who initially let the Indian take more of the strike before upping the ante during the death overs. Spinner Asha Shobhana, seeing her coming down the track, tried to bowl one wide and out of her reach but the Southern Stars batter used her big reach to wallop her over extra cover.

Rodrigues, who should have scored more, was bowled round the legs when she tried to convert off-spinner Shreyanka’s full-toss into an over-pitched delivery in her bid to play a paddle sweep. Capsey, who also hit eight boundaries, continued to find the gaps before opposition’s best bowler Shreyanka bowled a great last couple of overs to keep DC under check, conceding only nine runs in them.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 181/5 (Jemimah Rodrigues 58, Alice Capsey 48; Shreyanka Patil 4/26) bt Royal Challenger Bangalore 180/7 (Richa Ghosh 51, Ellyse Perry 49).

“We got more timid as the series went on,” says England head coach Brendon McCullum

The former New Zealand batter accepted that England will have to get better in some areas after being exposed in the Test series against India.

“We got more timid as the series went on,” says England head coach Brendon McCullum

Dharamshala: After the end of the fifth and final Test match against India in Dharamshala, England head coach Brendon McCullum said that the visitors were more “timid” as the series went on.

While speaking to the media, McCullum said that they lacked confidence at the end of the series as Rohit Sharma’s India put a lot of pressure on the visitors.

“If anything, we got more timid as the series went on, and that was because of the pressure that was applied to us by the Indian line-up, not just with the ball. With the bat, they put us under a tremendous amount of pressure, too,” McCullum was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying.

The head coach added that they were exposed in front of the Indian side during the five-match Test series.

“Sometimes, you can get away with things. But when you’re exposed the way we have been in the back end of this series in particular, it does require some pretty deep thinking and some adjustment to make sure we’re staying true to what we believe in,” he added.

The former New Zealand batter accepted that England will have to get better in some areas after being exposed in the Test series against India.

“There are some things where you can get a little bit of luck on your side and paper over a couple of the cracks. When you are exposed to the way we have been here, you know that you have to get better in some areas. The next couple of months will be us working out that and making sure when we come to the summer we are a more refined version of what we are at the minute,” he added.

England lost their fourth consecutive match in the series, unable to capitalise on their early 1-0 advantage following a narrow victory in Hyderabad.

The visitors had their chances, notably in Rajkot and Ranchi, but India came back strong on both occasions to win. India defeated England by 4-1 in the five-match Test series.

In the fifth and final match, the hosts sealed a massive win by an innings and 64 runs over the English side.
