Iran down two places in FIFA Women’s World Ranking

Team Melli went down two spots from 59th to 61st.

In total, 126 international matches have been played during the period so far, prompting more than a few changes in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking.

Qualification for the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament Paris 2024 has been the focal point for national teams in the OFC, UEFA, and AFC in the first three months of the year. Elsewhere, the 2024 West Asian Football Federation Women’s Championship and the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup have also been taking place.

Leaders Spain (1st) have extended their advantage over their nearest challenger, which is now England (2nd, up 2). Though beaten in the UEFA Nations League final by La Roja, France (3rd) retains its place in the global top three.

The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be released on June 14.

ICC makes mandatory use of stop clocks in between overs for all ODIs, T20Is

ICC makes mandatory use of stop clocks in between overs for all ODIs, T20Is

Dubai: International Cricket Council (ICC) has made mandatory the use of stop-clocks in between overs in limited-overs international matches. The rule will come into effect from June 1, 2024 and will be used at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA later this year.

The stop-clock is set to become permanent in all ODIs and T20Is from June 2024, starting with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA, the ICC informed in a release after the Board meeting.

In December 2023, the ICC introduced the stop clock on a trial basis in men’s limited-overs international matches.

The trial was supposed to run until April 2024, but the experiment has already yielded results in terms of timely completion of matches. Results presented to the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) demonstrated that approximately 20 minutes had been saved per ODI match, the release informed.

The feature has now been added as a mandatory playing condition in all Full Member ODI and T20I matches from June 1, 2024. As per the stop clock rule that was trialled in men’s white-ball cricket, the fielding side is expected to start a new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over.

An electronic clock, counting down from 60 to zero, will be displayed on the ground, with the onus on the third umpire to determine the start of the clock.

The failure of the fielding side to be ready to bowl the first ball of their next over within the stipulated 60 seconds of the previous over being completed attracts two warnings. Subsequent breaches would lead to a five-run penalty per incident.

There are a few exceptions to this rule, and the clock, if already started, can be cancelled in certain situations.

The exceptions include when a new batter comes to the wicket between overs; when an official drinks interval has been called and when the umpires have approved the on-field treatment of an injury to a batter or fielder.

The stop clock rule will also not be applicable when time lost is for any circumstances beyond the control of the fielding side.

Rishabh Pant sweats it out in nets ahead of IPL 2024

New Delhi: Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant sweat it out in the nets ahead of his much-anticipated return to competitive cricket with Delhi Capitals (DC) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year.

Pant missed the IPL 2023 after suffering multiple injuries in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. He even missed the ICC Cricket World Cup last year at home.
Delhi Capitals took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a video of Pant batting in the nets. In the video, Pant was seen smashing his trademark big hits, slog sweeps, reverse sweeps etc.

“BattingHeaven.mp4. Rishabh Pant is here and you will be here too, watching this on loop #YehHaiNayiDilli #IPL2024,” said the caption of DC’s post.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave a major update on Rishabh Pant’s recovery from injury and said that the wicketkeeper batter has been declared fit to take part in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

The schedule until April 7 has been announced as of now, with the remainder to be declared later because of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the dates for which are yet to be announced.

PV Sindhu crashes out of All England Open after losing to South Korea’s An Se Young

Birmingham: India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu suffered defeat at the hands of the reigning world champion An Se Young of Republic of Korea in the second round of the women’s singles at the All England Open on Thursday.

The two-time Olympic medallist lost to the Korean shuttler 21-19, 21-11 in the round of 16 of the BWF Super 1000 event. Overall, this marked Sindhu’s seventh loss against An Se Young in the same number of matches.

Ranked 11th in the badminton rankings, Sindhu exercised control by using the court to the optimum advantage at the beginning of the first game which allowed her to take a 4-1 lead.

However, An Se Young bounced back quickly to equalise at 4-4 and then take an 11-8 lead at the mid-game interval.

The Korean shuttler effortlessly dealt with Sindhu’s aggressive play by relying on blocks and accurate placement which allowed her to take a six-point advantage at 17-11.

The former world champion, Sindhu, pulled out a couple of commanding smashes to reduce the deficit to just one point at 20-19.

But An Se Young managed to see out the game and go one up in the match. In the second game, Sindhu managed to win the first couple of points.

However, Se Young’s ability to shift through gears effortlessly proved to be a challenge that Sindhu couldn’t overcome.

The deficit proved to be too much after the mid-game interval and she eventually lost the match in 41 minutes.

BCCI giving importance to domestic cricket is a very good thing: Rahane

Speaking about the triumph, Rahane said Mumbai must look to repeat this performance in the next season.

BCCI giving importance to domestic cricket is a very good thing: Rahane

Mumbai: Old guard Ajinkya Rahane understands the significance of religiously turning up for domestic matches to become a battle-hardened cricketer. So it came as no surprise when the batter Thursday lauded the BCCI for pushing players towards excelling in red-ball cricket.

The BCCI has been actively urging the senior cricketers towards playing red-ball cricket, including domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy.

“I want to mention about BCCI for giving importance to domestic cricket, which is a very good thing. Allowing players to go and play domestic cricket is very important,” Rahane said after guiding Mumbai to a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

The board had recently dropped middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan from the central contracts list for not taking the Indian team management’s advice of playing Ranji Trophy in order to regain their form and prove their fitness.

Speaking about the triumph, Rahane said Mumbai must look to repeat this performance in the next season.

Mumbai won the premier domestic competition for the first time since 2015-16, defeating Vidarbha by 169 runs in the final here at the Wankhede Stadium.

In fact, for the Ranji Trophy behemoths, it was their 11th win in 13 finals alone at the Wankhede.

“For us, what is important is that (in the) last couple of years, as a team we are playing good cricket. Our players are actually going into Indian team and representing Indian team which is a very good sign for Mumbai cricket again,” Rahane told the media after leading his team to title triumph.

“I’m not too bothered about other teams, but from here on, for Mumbai cricket, it is important to keep growing, keep thinking about how can we get better as a team in all the formats. We want to repeat this in coming years so our focus will be on that,” Rahane said.

Rahane said Mumbai can be proud of the fact that several of their players are either playing for India across formats or have been around the national side in the recent times.

“This victory means a lot to us. It is very special as you mentioned, (Mumbai) representing almost 10 players across formats and which is a very good sign. We all are happy (for) guys who are representing India right now from (the) Mumbai team,” Rahane said.

The win also brought an end to the career of Mumbai and India seamer Dhawal Kulkarni, who retired after taking 281 wickets in 95 first-class matches while having also played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for the country.

Kulkarni said he has no complaints about not having a long career at the international stage.

“What is gone is gone, I look at the future than what has happened in the past. I know I should have played more cricket for the Indian team,” Kulkarni said.

The right-arm pacer said he would be available to take up any role which keeps him associated with the sport.

“I have not thought about it much but cricket has given me so much that I want to give it back to cricket. Whether it be coaching or whatever I get, I want to give it back to cricket,” Kulkarni said.

Kulkarni, who had the unique distinction of taking the first and the last wicket in the final, said Mumbai were always patient against Vidarbha’s resistance.

“Winning a final in a tough way is what you want and that’s what we did as a team. We hung on to our nerves, put pressure, bowled really well, all the bowlers chipped in, it was you could say bowling in partnership and that’s what we did,” Kulkarni said.

“We didn’t lose our nerves. In the end we knew that we wanted one wicket, we wanted to break that partnership,” he added.

Rahane, who had described Mumbai’s head coach Omkar Salvi as ‘low-profile’ in domestic cricket, said he made a massive difference.

“Massive difference. The credit goes to him. Our journey as a team started from June (in 2023) and it was all because of Omkar’s vision,” Rahane said.

“We had some vision as a team but it came from Omkar so he focused on fitness, creating a great culture in the team, giving freedom to all the players, not only on the field but off the field as well. When someone is not doing well, you have to back that individual,” he added.

Kulkarni seconded Rahane and said Salvi created the right environment for their side.

“I also like to add that when you want a coach, you want to be a good friend of the team you are coaching. Omkar has been that person who everyone looks up to. He’s helped me a lot in my bowling career,” Kulkarni added.
