Chennai: India’s Grandmaster D Gukesh, who achieved a milestone by surpassing chess legend Viswanathan Anand to become India’s Number one player, said that he should note compared with former five-time World Chess Champion by any means.

Gukesh, who is 17 years old, recently overtook Anand to become the top-ranked player in India since July 1986, in the FIDE rating list.

The 17-year-old prodigy jumped to eighth position with 2758 points, he gained seven spots up in the list. While Anand is standing at number nine in the recent rankings.

“The expectations are always there so I’m used to it. Holding India’s No. 1 ranking is a really special thing for me. But by no means i should be compared to Vishi sir. He is a five-time world champion,” Gukesh told ANI. “My plan is to always improve my game as much as I can. I will be playing a few tournaments,” he added.

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh, two of India’s top young grandmasters from Chennai, were facilitated by their school where the two prodigies studied on Monday.

Fatorda: ATK Mohun Bagan held their nerves in a tightly-contested Indian Super League (ISL) final as they defeated Bengaluru FC 4-3 on penalties to lift the ISL title at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

In a game that ended 2-2 in regulation time, ATKMB’s Dimitri Petratos scored all three penalties he took on the night before Vishal Kaith’s save from Bruno Ramires’ penalty in the shootout brought them one step closer. Bengaluru FC’s Pablo Perez then sent his spot-kick over the bar as the Mariners sealed the result in a game where they had unsettled Bengaluru FC right from the start.

Bengaluru FC were forced into bringing Chhetri on early after Sivasakthi Narayanan was stretchered off in the opening seconds of the match. Things went further away from plan in the 13th minute when Krishna handled the ball from a Petratos corner as ATKMB were awarded a penalty. Petratos finished the job from the spot to put his team in front. ATKMB made use of this advantage to put pressure on Bengaluru FC, who picked up a glut of yellow cards on the pitch and one of them for head coach Simon Grayson.

But in the final minute of first-half stoppage time, they were given a way back earning a penalty when Subhasish Bose missed the ball and made contact with Roy Krishna while attempting a clearance. Chhetri stepped up to take it and sent Vishal Kaith the wrong way to restore parity.

In the final quarter of the game, Rohit Kumar’s shot from the edge of the box created a series of corners, before a deflection found Krishna at the far post – the striker nodded it home in the 78th minute.

But five minutes from time, the game was all square again. At the edge of the Bengaluru FC box, Kiyan Nassiri went down after a nudge from Pablo Perez as ATKMB won their second penalty of the evening. Petratos was on hand to score again.

In the third minute of stoppage time, Asish Rai’s goal-bound shot was cleared off the line by Prabir Das. Moments later, Colaco and Nassiri almost combined to score, but Bruno Ramires provided the crucial interception as the game went into extra time.

In extra time, Udanta Singh and Rohit failed to hit the target with their respective chances, while Manvir missed from a few yards out for ATKMB. Towards the end of extra time, Sandhu spilt Petratos’ long-range strike, but it bounced out for a corner that led to nothing before the game headed into penalties.

In the nervy penalty shoot-out, Golden Glove winner Kaith stepped up for his team for the second game in a row, while no one missed from the spot in a game dictated by penalties throughout. As the winners, ATKMB took home prize money of INR 6 crore, while runners-up Bengaluru FC were awarded INR 2.5 crore.

Visakhapatnam: Rain is likely to play a role in the second ODI between India and Australia at Visakhapatnam.

The second ODI between India and Australia will be played at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. But weather could play a spoilsport and ruin the party of millions of cricket fans who will catch this match live from the stadium or through electronic mediums. Earlier, a weather forecast had suggested the likelihood of rain on Saturday and Sunday in Visakhapatnam, where rain was reported multiple times on Saturday evening.

Andhra Cricket Association secretary SR Gopinath Reddy said on Saturday that there is a good arrangement of super soppers and an underground drainage system at the stadium.

“There is a good arrangement of super soppers and underground drainage system in the stadium. We are also covering the whole outfield, not only the pitch. The drainage system in this ground is good. If it rains only for a few hours, then the game can be started after drying the ground. But if it rains for a long time, it will affect the match. After the rain stops, we can prepare the ground within an hour,” said Reddy to ANI.

India is currently leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0.

In the first match, spells from Mohammed Shami (3/17), Mohammed Siraj (3/29) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/46) helped India bundled out Australia for 188 in just 35.4 overs. Only Mitchell Marsh (81 off 65) was able to make a big contribution with the bat.

In the chase of 189, Mitchell Starc’s (3/49) opening spell reduced India to 39/4 and Marcus Stoinis also took two scalps, but a 108-run stand between KL Rahul (75*) and Ravindra Jadeja (45*) helped India seal a five-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare.

Jadeja was adjudged as ‘Man of the Match’ for his all-round performance.

The third ODI will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22.

Earlier, India had won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia after sealing a 2-1 win in the red-ball leg of the series. With this win, they have qualified for the ICC World Test Championship and will face Australia at The Oval, London from June 7 onwards.

Jehan Daruvala roars to Saudi Arabia podium

India’s Jehan Daruvala said, ”To be honest, there are a bunch of mixed emotions,”

Jehan Daruvala roars to Saudi Arabia podium

Jeddah: India’s Jehan Daruvala raced to his 16th Formula 2 podium on Saturday with a hard-fought third-place finish in the Sprint race of the championship’s Saudi Arabian round, here.

The 24-year-old MP Motorsport driver started fifth and was hustling eventual winner Ayumu Iwasa for the win but dropped to third just three laps from the end after making a daring bid for the lead that very nearly earned him his first win of the season.

Still, he crossed the line just over a second behind Iwasa and less than half a second behind runner-up Victor Martins to score his second successive podium around the barrier-lined, high-speed sweeps of the Red Sea track.

”To be honest, there are a bunch of mixed emotions,” said Jehan after the race on Saturday.

”I would definitely say I was disappointed I didn’t win because the car was very good and I had a lot of pace today but also not disappointed because I took a lot of risks.

I have no regrets. I tried to win the race and, in the end, it didn’t pay off,” he added.

Jehan made a lightning start off the line but was boxed in by the Campos cars of Ralph Boschung and compatriot Kush Maini.

A second-lap safety car that bunched the field up gave him a shot at passing Maini and Jehan duly seized the opportunity to muscle his way past his fellow Indian and set off in pursuit of Red Bull-backed racer Jak Crawford.

Jehan dispatched Crawford on Lap 7 just seconds before a collision between Theo Pourchaire and Oliver Bearman triggered a second safety car period.

Jehan was hot on second-placed Boschung’s heels as the race got underway. The Swiss racer was powerless to resist the MP Motorsport racer’s charge as he swept around the outside of Turn 1 to take second.

He then battled Iwasa, while also keeping the rapid Martins behind him at bay, before ultimately having to concede after his turn 1 gamble for a fifth F2 win failed to pay off.

The podium was Jehan’s first of the season. Set to move up one spot on the grid to fourth after a penalty for Theo Pourchaire, he has a good chance of completing a podium sweep.

Jehan, however, is eyeing victory.

”All in all, I’m happy,” he said.

”I think I can even fight for the win tomorrow in the Feature Race,” he added.
