Madrid Spain Masters: PV Sindhu cruises to round 2

Madrid: Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the second round of the Madrid Spain Masters with an emphatic straight-game victory over Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang.

The double Olympics medallist, seeking to clinch yet another title, demonstrated her prowess on the court as she humbled her opponent with a score of 21-16, 21-12 in a lope-sided encounter.

From the onset, Sindhu asserted her dominance, swiftly surging to a 4-1 lead in the first game. Despite Zhang’s brief resurgence to take a 7-5 lead, Sindhu remained undeterred, unleashing a barrage of winners to regain control. With steely determination, she closed out the first game at 21-16 after a brief moment of deadlock at 14-14.

The second game proved to be a smoother sail for Sindhu as Zhang struggled to mount a significant challenge. Racing to an 11-6 lead, Sindhu maintained her momentum, capitalizing on her opponent’s faltering game to secure victory at 21-12. With her eyes set on the prize, Sindhu now prepares to face Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Hsun in the upcoming round.

While Sindhu’s triumph brought joy to Indian fans, the tournament witnessed a mixed bag of results for the Indian contingent. Ashmita Chaliha faced a tough defeat against Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand, conceding the match in straight games with a score of 13-21, 11-21.

In the mixed doubles category, Aadya Variyath and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran suffered a similar fate, succumbing to Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas of Indonesia in straight games with a score of 18-21, 14-21.

However, amidst the challenges, there were moments of triumph as well. The mixed doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy staged a remarkable comeback, rallying from behind to defeat Chen Zhi Ray and Yang Ching Tun of Chinese Taipei. In a thrilling encounter that stretched for 49 minutes, Sumeeth and Sikki emerged victorious with a hard-fought score of 16-21, 22-20, 21-14.

In the men’s singles category, Mithu Manjunath faced a formidable opponent in Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei, ultimately falling short in straight games with a score of 12-21, 11-21.

But the Indian hopes remain high as Kidambi Srikanth and Kiran George gear up to showcase their skills in the upcoming matches, aiming to make their mark on the prestigious tournament.

Rohit Sharma to mark 200th IPL match for Mumbai Indians

Hyderabad: Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter and former Indian Premier League (IPL) skipper Rohit Sharma will be playing his 200th match in the league for his franchise on Wednesday, when he takes on the field against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

SRH and MI will take on each other in their IPL 2024 clash in Hyderabad. Both teams started with narrow losses of four runs and six runs to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT), respectively, in their campaign openers.

Rohit has been an absolute legend for the Mumbai Indians. Since joining the franchise as a bright up-and-coming talent back in 2011, Rohit has played 199 IPL matches in Blue and Gold clothing, scoring 5,084 runs at an average of 29.39 and a strike rate of 129.86. He has scored a century and 34 fifties in 195 innings for MI, with the best score of 109*.

After taking over the captaincy of the franchise from Ricky Ponting in 2013, Rohit took MI to their golden period, winning the trophy five times in 10 years (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020) and reaching playoffs twice. Hardik Pandya replaced him as the captain last year after making a move to the franchise that made him a star following two great years with the Gujarat Titans (GT), including the title-winning debut season in 2022.

Rohit has also won two Champions League T20 titles with MI in 2011 and 2013, the latter as a captain. The ‘Hitman’ is MI’s all-time highest run-getter, scoring 5,357 runs in 208 matches and 204 innings at an average of 29.59 and a strike rate of almost 130, with a century and 35 fifties in 204 innings.

As a youngster, Rohit also represented the now-defunct Deccan Chargers, a former Hyderabad franchise from 2008-2010. He played 45 matches for the team, scoring 1,170 runs at an average of 30.79 and a strike rate of over 131, with eight fifties in 44 innings. His best score was 76*. He won the IPL 2009 season with this franchise, making him a six-time IPL champion.

The veteran batter is the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL history, scoring 6,254 runs in 244 matches at an average of 29.63 and a strike rate of 130.15. He scored a century and 42 fifties in 239 innings, with the best score of 109*.

As someone who has led MI for so long, Rohit is an institution in himself, with him and MI shaping the career trajectories of many future Indian stars like Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Ambati Rayadu, etc.

Miami Open: Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden reach Men’s Doubles semifinal

Florida: Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna and his Australian teammate Matthew Ebden sailed into men’s doubles semifinal at the Miami Open.

Top seeds Indian-Australian pair, currently ranked second in the world, needed a Match Tie-break to advance. The duo overcame Dutch-Australian pair John-Patrick Smith and Sem Verbeek 3-6, 7-6(7-4), 10-7 to reach the last four.

The Australian Open champions next face Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos or Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer.

This was Bopanna and Ebden’s third semifinal together this year. They had also reached the last-four of the Adelaide Open in January this year and also made the summit clash but eventually lost to English-American pair Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram.

Notably, Bopanna became the oldest first-time world no. 1 at the age of 43, achieving the top ranking in men’s doubles following the success at the Australian Open this January.

However, the duo slipped to second spot in the ATP rankings after their quarterfinal loss at the Dubai Championships and a round-of-32 exit at the Indian Wells Masters.

Iran into 2026 FIFA World Cup third round

Amir Ghalenoei’s men had strolled to a 5-0 victory when the two teams met at Azadi Stadium on Thursday and following Uzbekistan’s win over Hong Kong earlier in the day, they needed just a win to confirm qualification.

The deadlock was finally broken deep into added time of the first half when Hossein Kanaani sent a trademark diagonal pass for Mehdi Taremi who climbed highest to nod it into the path of Mehdi Ghaedi to rifle on the half volley past the Turkmen goalkeeper for the opener.

The result means Iran join Uzbekistan in the next round and in Saudi Arabia 2027, with both teams sitting on 10 points, while Turkmenistan remain level with Hong Kong on one point.

Both MI, SRH aim to make wining comebacks after narrow opening defeats

Hyderabad: Mumbai Indians will aim to land the killer punch after fluffing an easy run-chase in their opener when they meet a dangerous Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.

Five-time champions MI had a lot going for them in their tournament opener against the Gujarat Titans, whether it was the incisive spells from pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Dewald Brevis’ impactful knock or Rohit Sharma’s fireworks at the top of the order.

But MI, who have built a reputation of slow starters over the years, could not manage 48 runs off 36 balls with seven wickets in hand. With the 10-team event being more competitive than ever before, Mumbai cannot afford more such lackadaisical performances going forward.

In his first game as Mumbai captain, Hardik pushed himself down the order at number seven to accommodate the likes of Tim David and Brevis higher up.

Considering he batted much higher for the Gujarat Titans last year, there is a case for him to bat higher up the order.

Opener Ishan Kishan, back to action after a long break, could only last four balls against GT. With the T20 World Cup in mind, his performances will be tracked closely and have added significance. He needs to be at his best with the bat and behind the stumps to make the national squad.

Hardik will also be expecting an improved performance from spinners Shams Mulani and Piyush Chawla. They face SRH on their home turf and the Pat Cummins-led side showed against Kolkata Knight Riders what they are capable of.

The big-hitting Heinrich Klaasen almost got them over the line from a hopeless situation though the rest of the batters put up below par performances.

The opening duo of Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma has shown promise but would also need to be consistent if SRH are to do well in the competition.

SRH have invested heavily in pinch hitter Abdul Samad and it is high time he delivers on the promise.

The seasoned Bhuvneshwar Kumar was Andre “Russelled” on Saturday night and will look to bounce back strongly.

“Tough job in cricket to bowl to someone like him (Russell). It’s one of those ones which goes one way or the other. Who would have thought we would have got that close? Unfortunately, a bit too much. Lots to be encouraged by. A couple of points to work on also,” Cummins said after the narrow loss at Eden Gardens.

Squads:

Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Jasprit Bumrah, Piyush Chawla, Gerald Coetzee, Tim David, Shreyas Gopal, Ishan Kishan, Anshul Kamboj, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka, Mohammad Nabi, Shams Mulani, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Nuwan Thushara, Tilak Varma, Vishnu Vinod, Nehal Wadhera, Luke Wood, Suryakumar Yadav.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series starts on Nov 22 at Perth; Adelaide to host day-night Test

For the first time since 1991-92, Australia and India will compete across a five-Test series with Perth Stadium hosting the opening match.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series starts on Nov 22 at Perth; Adelaide to host day-night Test

Melbourne: The Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series between India and Australia will begin on November 22, as Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed details of the 2024-25 international schedule.

For the first time since 1991-92, Australia and India will compete across a five-Test series with Perth Stadium hosting the opening match, followed by a day-night pink-ball second Test at Adelaide Oval, scheduled from December 6-10.

The Gabba, once the traditional opening venue of the Test summer, will host the third Test from December 14-18, before the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30, and the New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3-7, 2025.

In the last four Test series between the two teams, reigning Border-Gavaskar Trophy champions India has been the more dominant team, winning each time. This includes winning the Test series in Australia in back-to-back years, from 2018–19 and 2020–21 (both by identical 2-1 margins).

Australia have not beaten India in a home series since 2014-15. In 2018-19, India became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated summers of cricket in memory with the eyes of the cricket world focussed on the extended Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series and the multiformat Women’s Ashes.

“Fittingly, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been put on the same footing as The Ashes with a five Test Series for the first time since 1991-92 and we’re confident the schedule will maximise viewership and attendances and there will be a tremendous atmosphere in stadiums across the country,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.

Meanwhile, Australian women will then play three ODIs against India in December meaning the hugely supported Indian men’s and women’s teams will be in Australia simultaneously.

After the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar series, the multiformat women’s Ashes will commence with the first ODI on January 12, and the white-ball leg of the series will finish with a January 25 clash at the Adelaide Oval.

The Test match at the MCG will be played over four days from January 30 and will be the first women’s Test to be played at the iconic ground since 1949.

“The first Women’s Test match at the MCG since 1949, and the first day-night Test at that historic ground, will be a memorable occasion and another important milestone for women’s cricket as we take more games to major stadiums including the SCG and Adelaide Oval.

“The women’s white-ball series against New Zealand and India and the men’s white ball series against Pakistan will provide wonderful entertainment and ensure fans in many locations can get behind our world champion teams,” Hockley added.

Border Gavaskar Trophy Series schedule:

1st Test, November 22-26 at Perth Stadium, Perth

2nd Test, December 6-10 at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide (D/N)

3rd Test, December 14-18 at The Gabba, Brisbane

4th Test, December 26-30 at MCG, Melbourne

5th Test, January 3-7 at SCG, Sydney
