Palestinian resistance on verge of ‘great victory’: Hamas

Ismail Haniyeh made the remarks in televised a speech on Saturday, after Palestinian fighters launched their biggest operation against the occupying regime in years and crossed the fence into Israeli-occupied cities, with hundreds of rockets being fired from the Gaza Strip.

“We are on the verge of a great victory and a clear conquest on the Gaza front,” Haniyeh said, adding that the battle has moved into the heart of the “Zionist entity.”

“Enough is enough, the cycle of intifadas (uprisings) and revolutions in the battle to liberate our (Palestinian) land and our prisoners languishing in occupation (Israeli) prisons must be completed,” he stated.

The top Hamas official further noted that the resistance group has already warned that “it will not remain silent about what is happening in al-Quds and the al-Aqsa Mosque, even if the entire world keeps silent on these insults and adversarial intentions.”

He also said the latest operation would soon inspire other resistance groups in the occupied West Bank and elsewhere, urging all Palestinians to participate in this battle which he said will end with victory.

Haniyeh warned the Arab countries that have moved to normalize their relations with Israel in recent years that the occupying regime cannot bring them security.

“We say to all countries, including our Arab brothers, that this entity, which cannot protect itself in the face of resistors, cannot provide you with any protection,” he said.

“All the normalization agreements that you signed with that entity cannot resolve this (Palestinian) conflict,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Hamas resistance fighters broke out of the fences separating Gaza and illegally occupied territories and infiltrated a number of towns and settlements. A heavy barrage of rockets was also fired from the Gaza Strip.

Hamas said more than 7,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, declaring it had started “Operation al-Aqsa Storm”.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement also said its fighters have joined the operation as Hamas called on Palestinians everywhere to fight and on resistance groups in Lebanon to join the fighting against Israel.

The operation came a day after Israeli forces attacked hundreds of Palestinians attending the funeral procession of a young Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank, injuring over 50 people.

According to Israeli media, at least 200 Israelis have been killed and over 1,100 injured following the large-scale operation.

Abu Ubaida, the spokesman for al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, has also said that “Operation al-Aqsa Storm” is in its first stage.

Palestine at the United Nations

This episode of Palestine Declassified looks at the United Nations General Assembly.

In the past eight years alone, the United Nations General Assembly has approved 140 resolutions criticizing the Zionist entity. And the world’s last apartheid regime was censured once again at the General Assembly last month.

In his speech at the Assembly President Raeisi of the Islamic Republic of Iran, explicitly raised the immoral occupation of Palestine.

There was an unexpected twist in the tale that saw Israel’’s ambassador to the United Nations escotted from the room by security staff.

The Israel regime has cut electricity to the Gaza Strip as it intensifies its attacks against the besieged Palestinian territory.

The regime’s energy minister said he ordered the state-run electricity company to halt power supply to the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

“I have signed an order instructing (Israel) Electric Company to stop the electricity supply to Gaza,” Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.

In the meantime, power outages are an everyday occurrence in Gaza and households only had electricity for several hours a day on a rotational basis on the days before recent power cuts started.

Gaza’s power authority says 80 percent of the electricity supplies to Gaza from the national grid have been cut off following Israel’s announcement.

Israeli forces launch raids on various cities of the occupied West Bank on an almost daily basis under the pretext of detaining what the regime calls “wanted” persons. The raids usually lead to violent confrontations with residents.

Meantime, Palestinian medics said more than 200 people have been killed and many more injured as a result of Israeli bombardment across the besieged Gaza Strip.

Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that hospital officials in the Gaza Strip have recorded the death of 198 civilians and the injury of 1,610 others. A large number of the buildings, homes and public facilities in Gaza have also been badly damaged due to heavy Israeli airstrikes.

The Israeli regime forces launched the deadly airstrike after resistance fighters staged a surprise, large-scale operation in response to the desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque amid increased settler violence.

Already, the rising death toll makes 2023 the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since the United Nations began keeping track of fatalities in 2005. Prior to this, 2022 had been the deadliest year with 150 Palestinians killed, of whom 33 were minors, according to UN records.

Over 230 Palestinian killed in Israel aggression against Gaza

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that hospital officials in the Strip have recorded the death of 232 civilians and injury of nearly 1,700 others. A large number of buildings, homes and public facilities have also been badly damaged due to heavy Israeli bombardments.

Israel launched the strike after resistance fighters staged a surprise, large-scale operation in response to the desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence.

Local sources confirmed the arrival of 9 dead bodies at Gaza’s largest medical complex, Al-Shifa hospital, five others at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, and another two at Abu Yousef al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah.

Additionally, an Israeli fighter jet struck a residential building near al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City with a missile, injuring at least six civilians and severely damaging to the targeted structure and nearby homes.

Six Israeli rockets slammed into a site in the Ansar area west of Gaza City, completely destroying it and causing damage to adjacent residential buildings.

Israeli warplanes also carried out airstrikes on medical personnel in Gaza. One of the airstrikes targeted an ambulance at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, while the other struck the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza.

Israeli military forces fired dozens of concussion rockets into agricultural lands in the border areas east and north of Gaza, causing damage to nearby homes.

Hamas boasts of large number of Israelis taken captive during blitz

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says it has captivated enough number of Israeli soldiers to swap them for all Palestinians who are illegally kept in Israeli prisons.

Deputy chief of Hamas’s political bureau Saleh al-Arouri said on Saturday the resistance movement had taken an unprecedented number of Israeli captives during an operation that was launched earlier in the day from the Gaza Strip into the occupied territories.

“Our detainees in [Israeli] prisons, their freedom is looming large. What we have in our hands will release all our prisoners,” Arouri said, adding that some senior Israeli officers were among the captives.

Hamas forces managed to infiltrate the heavily-fortified territories that are under the Israeli occupation early on Saturday after the resistance group fired thousands of rockets into those areas.

Arouri said Hamas was ready for an expansion of the war with Israel while insisting that continued fighting would enable the group to take more Israelis captive.

“The longer fighting continues, the higher the number of prisoners will become,” he told Al Jazeera.

Hamas has repeatedly said securing the release of Palestinians imprisoned by the Israeli regime is among its main priorities.

Estimates by NGOs suggest that nearly 5,200 Palestinians are in Israeli prisons with women and minors accounting for a significant number.

Israel launched attacks on Gaza after the launch of the Palestinian Operation al-Aqsa Storm on Saturday. Nearly 200 Palestinians have been killed.

The Hamas says its operation, which has left at least 100 Israelis killed, has been a response to repeated acts of insult by Israeli settlers against the al-Aqsa Mosque, a holy Muslim site located in the occupied city of al-Quds.
