Over 1 million Gaza residents forced to leave their homes: UN

“Over one million people – almost half the total population of Gaza – have been displaced. Some 600,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are in the Middle Area, Khan Yunis and Rafah, of those, nearly 400,000 are in UNRWA facilities – much exceeding our capacity to assist in any meaningful way, including with space in our shelters, food, water or psychological support,” the agency said.

In addition, UNRWA confirmed the deaths of 14 of its staff in Gaza, noting that this number is not final and could rise.

On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm deep into the territories occupied by the Israeli regime. The operation involved large-scale air, land, and sea strikes.

The group said the operation was a reaction to the recurring desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied al-Quds as well as intensified Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Israel responded with intensive air strikes on civilian targets in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 2,670 Palestinians in Gaza and wounding some 10,000 others, according to the territory’s health ministry.

The regime has also intensified the siege of Gaza, leaving the city, home to more than 2.3 million Palestinians, without water, electricity, fuel and internet.

According to reports, Israel also destroyed some 135,000 houses and residential units in Gaza since the beginning of its savage attacks.

Israel will be gone soon as victory belongs to Palestinians: Leader’s adviser

Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

The Israeli regime will be gone soon and the Palestinian nation will be victorious in the final battle to liberate Palestine, says a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“This is a definite principle,” Ali Akbar Velayati added in a Monday meeting with Khaled al-Qaddoumi, the Hamas representative in Iran amid the Israeli war on the besieged Gaza Strip.

He hailed the recent achievements made by the Palestinian resistance, saying that Hamas is moving ahead on the right path toward winning a final victory.

Velayati, who is also the secretary general of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening, said the ongoing Hamas’ large-scale operation against the occupation, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, was a major step that shocked the enemies.

He emphasized that Iran stands by the oppressed Palestinian people and would continue its spiritual support.

The Leader’s aide also encouraged Hamas fighters to move ahead with all their might, saying the Muslim world is strongly supporting them in the war against the Israeli regime.

Qaddoumi, for his part, praised Iran’s stance in support of the Palestinian cause, saying that as emphasized by Ayatollah Khamenei, the Palestinians must reinforce their unity to obtain their goal and defeat the criminal Israeli regime.

He said the recent unprecedented achievements made by the Palestinian people proved that the Israeli regime is in decline and that Palestinians will liberate al-Quds.

On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Storm deep into the territories occupied by the Israeli regime. The operation involved large-scale air, land, and sea strikes.

At least 2,750 Palestinians have been killed and 9,700 others wounded as the Israeli regime presses ahead with its bombing campaign against residential neighborhoods in the besieged Gaza Strip.

French striker Benzema shows his support for Gaza

“All our prayers for the inhabitants of Gaza who are once again victims of these unjust bombings which spare no women or children,” Anadolu Agency reported citing Benzema’s post on the social media platform X on Sunday.

Benzema, who won the 2022 men’s Ballon d’Or award, joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad after leaving Real Madrid in June.

Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, launched a comprehensive attack on the Zionist regime on Oct. 7 called Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, a multi-pronged surprise attack including a barrage of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air.

Hamas said the operation was in retaliation for the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and Israeli settlers’ growing violence against Palestinians.

The Israeli military then launched Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas targets within the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s response has extended to cutting water and electricity supplies to Gaza, further worsening living conditions in an area that has endured a crippling siege since 2007, as well as ordering more than 1 million Gazans in the northern Strip to evacuate to the southern region.

More than 2,700 Palestinians have been killed and at least 9,700 wounded by the airstrikes of the Israel regime on the Gaza Strip.

Factbox: Israeli regime’s use of white phosphorous bombs in Gaza, Lebanon

By Humaira Ahad

Amid the Israeli regime’s indiscriminate bombing of densely-populated civilian areas in the besieged Gaza Strip and south Lebanon, social media has been replete with videos showing the extensive use of white phosphorous bombs.

The use of the banned substance has been widely condemned by international human rights watchdogs, but the Western allies of the Tel Aviv regime have conveniently turned a blind eye to it.

The use of the waxy, yellowish-to-clear chemical came after the occupying regime intensified its blockade of the coastal strip and cut supplies of electricity, water and gas to Gazans.

The white phosphorous bombs were extensively dropped both on the Gaza Strip and in southern Lebanon in recent days as part of the sweeping aerial blitz targeting civilians, mostly children.

According to reports from Gaza, large numbers of people have been affected by it and are battling severe health issues such as breathlessness caused by the smoke screen created by the toxic gas.

Human rights organizations have cited verified videos taken in Lebanon and Gaza on October 10 and 11 respectively, which show multiple airbursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over these areas.

The use of this substance increases the risk to civilians and amounts to a blatant breach of international humanitarian law, according to human rights advocates.

Pertinently, the regime in Tel Aviv used white phosphorus extensively during its deadly onslaught on Gaza in 2009, which sparked a global outcry at the time.

The use of the substance in civilian areas is prohibited under the United Nations Convention on Conventional Weapons, to which the Israeli regime is not a signatory.

The death toll from Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip has risen to 2,750, according to the latest updates, besides 9,700 injuries. In the occupied West Bank, 58 fatalities and 1,250 injuries have been confirmed by the Palestinian health authorities.

‘Arms viewed with horror’

White phosphorous is an incendiary weapon. The UN defines incendiary weapons as those “designed to set fire to objects or cause burn or respiratory injury to people through the action of flame, heat, or combination thereof, resulting from a chemical reaction of a flammable substance.”

The world body has regarded incendiary weapons as “arms viewed with horror.”

“Incendiary weapons are weapons or munitions designed to set fire to objects or cause burn or respiratory injury to people through the action of flame, heat, or combination thereof, resulting from a chemical reaction of a flammable substance such as napalm or white phosphorus,” the UN said.

Exposure of white phosphorous to oxygen results in its ignition creating flames that reach temperatures as high as 815° Celsius.

This chemical substance is known to burn structures and is used to ignite fire. Keeping in view its horrible effects, Protocol III of the 1980 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons prohibits the usage of white phosphorous and other incendiaries to attack civilians.

The chemical is believed to cause severe burns with its ill effects going down to the bones.

One of the most horrendous effects of these white phosphorous munitions is the re-ignition weeks after its explosion, continuing to harm the populations that come in contact with it.

According to medical experts, when white phosphorous comes in contact with the human body, it leads to both thermal and chemical burns which can reach deep down to the bone. The chemical is highly soluble in fat and can easily seep through the human flesh reaching the skeletal system.

The metabolic effects of the chemical are more severe. Upon entering the bloodstream, it can cause multi-organ failure leading to death. Even dressed wounds can reignite when dressings are removed and the wound is again exposed to air.

Minor burns can turn fatal causing long-term suffering of scarring and physical disabilities.

Usage of white phosphorous

The earliest use of white phosphorous in wars was reported in the 1800s when Irish nationalists used it against British forces. The formulation came to be known as “Fenian fire”.

The British army used it extensively in both the World Wars. Americans also used the toxic chemical weapon against people in the city of Fallujah after invading Iraq in 2003.

Also, it is not the first time the Zionist regime is using white phosphorous in Palestine. Continuing its war crimes, the regime has used munitions on the civilian population in the past as well.

The regime fired phosphorus shells against people in south Lebanon during the 2006 Lebanon War.

During the Gaza war from December 27, 2008, to January 18, 2009, the Israeli military admitted to using white phosphorous munitions in the densely populated Gaza Strip.

According to documented evidence, the Israeli military fired hundreds of ground-launched white phosphorus munitions into densely-populated areas of Gaza at that time, including 155mm M825E1 artillery projectiles, which throw burning phosphorus wedges up to 125 meters in all directions.

According to human rights watchdogs, the regime’s military fired white phosphorus indiscriminately in overcrowded areas of Gaza in 2009, killing and injuring civilians.

In 2013, following a court petition, the Israeli military said it would no longer use white phosphorus in populated areas except in exceptional circumstances, without specifying the “circumstances.”

However, the use continues, as seen in the past week, both in the Gaza Strip and south Lebanon.

Iran slams false human rights claimants approach over Gaza

Saying that the Palestinians are currently the most oppressed nation in the world, Nasser Kan’ani in his weekly presser on Monday cited that unfortunately, the history of more than 70 years of Zionists’ occupation is being repeated in the Gaza Strip these days.

“Today, we see the hypocrisy of the false claimants of human rights regarding Gaza more clearly than ever,” he added.

Over 2,700 Palestinians killed in Israel attack on Gaza

More than a week after the eruption of the conflict between Palestinians and the Israeli regime, more than 1,000 people are missing under the rubble of buildings in Gaza that were destroyed by Israeli air strikes, Aljazeera reports.

There were injured and dead among them and many others were pulled alive out of the rubble, 24 hours after buildings were struck.

More than 2,700 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks on Gaza with at least 9,700 wounded.

At least four hospitals in northern Gaza are no longer functioning following Israeli bombardments, according to the United Nations.

The World Health Organization said 21 other hospitals in the besieged Strip have been ordered to evacuate by Israel.

The UN health agency warned the “forced evacuation of hospitals may amount to a violation of international humanitarian law”.

Supporting Palestine definite policy of Islamic Republic

Addressing a cabinet session on Sunday evening, Raeisi strongly condemned the silence of certain countries and international organizations in the face of Israel’s unprecedented and heinous crimes against the oppressed and defenseless people of Palestine

Those who keep silent in the face of Israel’s crimes must be held accountable for their actions and face the judgment of history, he added.

He reiterated the Islamic Republic’s unwavering and definite policy of supporting the people of Palestine.

The Iranian president warned that wasting any second to stop Israel’s bombardment of residential areas in Gaza and to help people access basic commodities would lead to harmful consequences.

He also called on all countries to fulfill their responsibilities vis-à-vis the ongoing situation in Gaza, where the Israeli occupying regime presses ahead with its brutal attacks against civilians.

In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier on Sunday, Raeisi said Israel’s actions against Palestinians echo the crimes perpetrated by the Nazis during the Second World War, warning that the dimensions of the war will broaden if the Israeli regime persists with its attacks.

“If the Zionist regime seeks to pay for its defeat through the continuation of these crimes [against Palestinians], the dimensions of the developments will expand,” the Iranian president said.

West Asia ‘on verge of abyss’: UN chief warns amid deteriorating crisis in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the West Asia region is “on the verge of an abyss” as the situation in the Gaza Strip is rapidly deteriorating amid the unrelenting bombardment of the enclave by the Israeli military.

“We are on the verge of the abyss in the Middle East,” Guterres warned in a statement on Sunday.

He called on the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement to release all Israeli captives “immediately” and “without conditions”, and urged the Tel Aviv regime to allow humanitarian aid supplies into Gaza.

“Gaza is running out of water, electricity and other essential supplies,” Guterres noted in the statement.

UN stocks of food, water, medical supplies and fuel in Egypt, Jordan, the West Bank and the Israeli-occupied territories “can be dispatched within hours”, he said, adding that staff “need to be able to bring these supplies into and throughout Gaza safely, and without impediment.”

“Each one of these two objectives is valid in themselves. They should not become bargaining chips, and they must be implemented because it is the right thing to do,” stated Guterres, who emphasized it was his duty to make both appeals “in this dramatic moment.”

UNRWA calls on Israel to protect Gazans

Meanwhile, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has called upon Israeli authorities to protect all civilians sheltering in its facilities across the besieged Gaza Strip, including those in Gaza City and in the northern flank of the coastal enclave.

Despite the Israeli order to evacuate more than 1 million persons from northern Gaza and Gaza City to the southern Gaza Strip, many, particularly pregnant women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities, will not be able to flee the area, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said in a statement.

They have no choice and must be protected at all times, the statement read.

Wars have rules, the UNRWA stressed, noting that “civilians, hospitals, schools, clinics and United Nations premises cannot be a target.”

The UN agency emphasized that it is sparing no efforts to advocate with parties to the conflicts to meet their obligations under international law to protect civilians, including those seeking refuge in UNRWA shelters.

“UNRWA shelters in Gaza and northern Gaza are no longer safe. This is unprecedented,” the statement said.

“This war should be no exception, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including United Nations buildings, applies to this conflict too,” the statement concluded.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says it has no information about a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip which is under heavy Israeli bombardment.

Hamas media office made the denial on Monday after Reuters reported that the US, Israel and Egypt have agreed to a truce in southern Gaza to begin at 9 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) to coincide with the reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
