Ram Navami: Ayodhya Temple Set For 'Surya Tilak' Of Ram Lalla

Ram Navami: Ayodhya Temple Set For 'Surya Tilak' Of Ram Lalla

The system was tested by the scientists on Tuesday. (File)

Lucknow:

At noon on Ram Navami Wednesday, the Sun’s rays will fall on the forehead of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, a ‘Surya tilak’ of the deity made possible by an elaborate mechanism involving mirrors and lenses.

This would be the first Ram Navami since the consecration of the Ram idol at the new temple, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22.

The system was tested by the scientists on Tuesday.

“The basic objective of the Surya Tilak project is to focus a ’tilak’ on the forehead of Shri Ram idol on every Shri Ram Navami day. Under the project, sunlight will be brought on the forehead of Lord Ram at noon on Shri Ram Navami in the Chaitra month every year,” Dr S K Panigrahi, scientist at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, who was associated with the project told news agency PTI.

Elaborating further, Dr S K Panigrahi said, “The position of the Sun changes every year on the day of Shri Ram Navami. Detailed calculations show that the date of Shri Ram Navami repeats every 19 years.” According to a senior scientist of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, the planned tilak size is 58 mm. The exact period of tilak on the forehead centre is about three to three-and-a-half minutes, with two minutes of full illumination, he said.

Meanwhile, a member of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Anil Mishra, told PTI, “During the Surya tilak, devotees will be allowed inside the Ram temple. Around 100 LEDs are being put up by the temple trust, and 50 by the government, which will show the Ram Navami celebrations. People will be able to see the celebrations from where they are present.” Sharing his personal experience in installing this unique mechanism, Dr D P Kanungo, chief scientist at CSIR-CBRI, Roorkee said, “Actually this is meticulously planned, designed and implemented to achieve utmost accuracy.” This will be a testament to our scientific acumen and indigenous technological development to showcase before our countrymen who have all the faith in and support to our scientific community, he said.

Asked what will happen to Surya tilak in case of a cloudy sky, Kanungo said, “That’s the limitation. We don’t wish to do with artificial light because of the faith and belief of our people.” In consultation with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore, the CSIR-CBRI, Roorkee team has developed a mechanism for a 19-year period to steer the sunlight from the third floor of the temple to the ‘garbha griha’.

The detailed complete design to bring the sunlight to the garbha griha is developed by CBRI, with the IIA providing consultancy for the optical design.

The fabrication of optical elements, pipes, tilt mechanism and other related components are carried out by Optics and Allied Engg Pvt Ltd (Optica), a Bangalore-based company.

Before implementing the opto-mechanical system in the Ram temple for Surya tilak, a scaled down model suitable for the Roorkee locality has been successfully validated. A full scale model has been successfully validated at Optica site at Bangalore in March 2024.

The CSIR-CBRI, Roorkee team along with IIA Bangalore and Optica Bangalore completed the installation in the first week of April, and repeated trials have been done, Dr S K Panigrahi said.

Meanwhile, explaining the opto-mechanical system for Surya tilak, Dr S K Panigrahi said, “The opto-mechanical system consists of four mirrors and four lenses fitted inside the tilt mechanism and piping systems. The complete cover with aperture for the tilt mechanism is placed at the top floor to divert the Sun rays through mirrors and lenses to the garbha girha.” “The final lens and mirror focus the Sun rays to the forehead of Shri Ram facing towards the east. The tilt mechanism is used to adjust the first mirror tilting for sending the Sun rays towards the north direction to the second mirror for making the Surya tilak every year on Shri Ram Navami day,” he said.

“All the piping and other parts are manufactured using the brass material. The mirrors and lenses which are used are of very high quality and durable to sustain for a long period.

“The inner surface of pipes, elbows and enclosures are black powder coated to avoid scattering of sunlight. Also at the top aperture, IR (infra red) filter glass is used to restrict the Sun heat wave to fall on the forehead of the idol,” Dr S K Panigrahi said.

He said the team from CSIR-CBRI Roorkee includes Dr S K Panigrahi, Dr R S Bisht, Kanti Solanki, V Chakradhar, Dinesh and Sameer. Prof R Pradeep Kumar (Director, CSIR-CBRI) mentored the project.

From IIA Bangalore side, Dr Anna Purni S (Director IIA), Er S Sriram and Professor Tushar Prabhu are the consultants. Rajinder Kotaria, managing director, Optica, and his team Nagraj, Vivek, Thava Kumar were actively involved in fabrication and installation part.

Rajasthan Royals Pull Off IPL's Biggest Run Chase To Beat KKR By 2 Wickets

Jos Buttler swung his bat merrily on way to a 60-ball 107 and single-handedly lifted Rajasthan Royals to a sensational two-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders, pulling off the IPL’s biggest run chase on Tuesday. Asked to bat first, Sunil Narine’s 109 off 56 balls powered hosts KKR to a formidable 223/6 in front of a packed Eden Gardens. But Buttler had other ideas as he dragged the Royals, dead an buried at 121/6 in the 13th over, past the target of 224 in the last ball of the game after the visitors needed 46 runs in the last three overs, and 28 in 12 balls. Batting first on a fresh pitch, Narine blazed away to a 49-ball 100 to lead KKR’s charge in this top-of-the-table clash.

Trent Bolt eventually got the better of Narine, but not before the opener had bludgeoned 13 fours and six sixes, displaying supreme confidence and skill against one of the best attacks of the IPL.

It was a one-man show from KKR as Narine batted till the 18th over, first stitching 85 runs with Angkrish Raghuvanshi (30) and then adding 51 runs with Andre Russell (13).

However, Buttler had the last laugh as Narine’s maiden T20 hundred went in vain.

The England white-ball captain, who missed the previous match due to a niggle, anchored the chase with utmost precision, hitting nine fours and six sixes overall.

Wickets kept falling at the other end and RR were reduced to 186/8 in the 18th over over, but Buttler showed little nerves.

Needing 28 from the last two overs, Buttler had to be calculative and he did just that by smashing Harshit Rana for 19 runs while facing all his deliveries.

The destructive Englishman raced to his century by hitting Varun Chakravarthy for a six in the first ball of the final over.

He refused to take any single to guard the tailenders but got the job done in the last ball.

This was the joint highest run chase in the history of IPL. Previously, the Royals had overhauled a 224-run target against Punjab Kings at Sharjah in 2020.

The win consolidated Royals’ position at the top of the standings with 12 points at the halfway stage of the league, four clear of KKR.

The IPL’s most expensive buy Mitchell Starc proved to be rusty again with the ball, giving away 0/50 and in his 18th over, he conceded 18 runs.

Earlier, not only did Narine pierce the field with ease, he also unleashed a relentless attack on R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Having reached fifty in 29 balls, the Trinidadian took just 20 deliveries to get to his first century, pulling Chahal to the midwicket boundary.

Clad in a crisp white T-shirt, team owner Shah Rukh Khan sent a flying kiss from the stands.

On the field, his West Indies teammate Russell jumped in joy, giving him a bear hug as Narine waved his bat in a muted celebration.

Finally, it took a Boult special to end Narine’s innings as the Kiwi left-arm pacer nailed a perfect yorker that also broke the leg stump, causing some delay in the middle.

With Narine taking the centre stage, the Royals spinners had a poor day. Ashwin gave away four wides and conceded 49 runs from his four overs, while Chahal returned with figures of 1/54 from his full quota.

Later, Rinku Singh’s nine-ball 20 not out with two sixes and one four took the total past 200-mark, as KKR scored 62 runs in the last five overs.

Avesh Khan (2/35) and Boult (1/31) were the pick of the Royals bowlers. Kuldeep Sen (2/46) also picked two.

Riyan Parag dropped a sitter from in-form English opener Phil Salt in the second ball of the match.

The drop did not cost the Royals much as Salt, who scored a match-winning unbeaten 89 against Lucknow Super Giants, got out for 10 thanks to Avesh Khan’s one-handed return catch.

But sloppy fielding at the onset looked to have its impact as Narine and the young Raghuvanshi seized the momentum in the power play.

Raghuvanshi’s exquisite timing was on full display when he slammed Boult for three boundaries in the fifth over.

Narine took charge against Sen with a monstrous six over deep midwicket and followed that up with a boundary in a 16-run over, as KKR made 56 for 1 in the power play.

Narine soon shifted to top gear, smashing Chahal over long-off and in the next over produced an even bigger hit in the same region to race to his half-century in 29 balls.

The duo took KKR to 100/1 at the halfway mark before Raghuvanshi threw his wicket away, mistiming an upper cut. But Narine continued the onslaught to prop up KKR.

The entire operation was conducted by Bhuj police.” “They have been handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch for further questioning,” the press release further read.
The firing incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, saw two unidentified men open fire outside Galaxy Apartments, where the actor resides, and flee from the spot.

The incident prompted swift action from law enforcement agencies.

According to preliminary investigation, the suspects arrived at the scene on a motorcycle, covering their faces under helmets, indicating a “meticulously planned attack.” They discharged a total of four rounds during the incident, leaving behind a live cartridge at the scene.

Following the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde spoke to Salman Khan over the phone regarding the incident. Shinde also discussed this with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and suggested increasing the actor’s security.

Rahul Gandhi calls electoral bonds “biggest haftebaazi” scheme

The remarks of the Wayanad MP came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the electoral bond scheme was aimed at curbing black money

Rahul Gandhi calls electoral bonds “biggest haftebaazi” scheme

Kozhikode: Calling the electoral bonds the “biggest haftebaazi” scheme, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned as to why the names of donors were kept hidden by the ruling BJP government if the scheme was meant to ensure transparency in the election process.

“This (electoral bonds) is Narendra Modi’s master scheme. The whole idea was his. He said the electoral bonds were launched to bring transparency in politics. Then, why were the names kept hidden? Who was stopping the release of data after the Supreme Court asked? This is extortion. On street level, it is known as ‘haftebazi’. This is the country’s biggest ‘haftebaazi’ scheme conceptualised by the Prime Minister,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters in Kozhikode.

The remarks of the Wayanad MP came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an interview with ANI, said that the electoral bond scheme was aimed at curbing black money in elections and said the opposition wants to run away after making allegations. PM Modi said that “everyone will regret it when there is an honest reflection.” “This is the success story of electoral bonds, there were electoral bonds, so you are getting a trail which company gave, how it gave, and where it gave. Whether what happened in the process was good or bad can be an issue of debate….I never say that there is no shortcoming in decision-making. We learn after discussing and improving. There is a lot of scope for improvement in this as well. But today we have completely pushed the country towards black money, hence, I say everyone will regret it. When they think honestly, everyone will regret it,” PM Modi said.

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a roadshow in Kozhikode over the electoral bond scheme and said that he is trying to defend the biggest corruption scandal.

Addressing the public at a roadshow in Kozhikode, Rahul Gandhi said, “I don’t know if you saw his interview with ANI yesterday. I don’t know if you saw his face, his eyes, he was trying to defend the biggest corruption scandal on the planet through which BJP has got thousands of crores of rupees by extorting them from India’s businessmen.” The Supreme Court in February this year struck down the electoral bond scheme and said it was unconstitutional.

During his roadshow in Mallapuram, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also appealed people to read his party’s manifesto. “We have a strategy for employment, for farmers, for labourers, for women, and for young men. The BJP has also promised a few things- they have two main ideas. One is to bring the Olympic Games to India, and the second is to send someone to the moon. Of course, they will use a rocket that ISRO made, which was founded, supported, and developed by the Congress party,” he said. Kerala’s 20 constituencies go to the polls on April 26 in the second phase of the Lok Sabha election.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, while the Congress party had won 15 seats, its allies, the Indian Union Muslim League, won two seats, the Revolutionary Socialist Party won one, and the Kerala Congress (M) won one seat. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won one seat in Alappuzha.

No discrimination with Muslims under PM Modi: Anurag Thakur

Jammu: Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said that there was no discrimination with the Muslim community in the country under Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government which focused on “service, good governance and well-being of the poor” after coming to power in 2014.

The information and broadcasting minister accused the Congress of dividing people on the name of ‘creed, caste and religion’ and said the BJP believes in uniting the country and taking it forward.

“Before 2014, Muslims were being told if Modi comes to power you will be finished…have you seen the Modi-led government discriminating against anyone on the basis of religion? Has anyone asked you whether you are a Muslim, Hindu or Sikh when it comes to availing the Central government schemes and facilities like free ration and free treatment,” Thakur said addressing an election rally in Kishtwar district.

Kishtwar is part of the Udhampur parliamentary constituency, which is going to polls on April 19 to decide the fate of BJP candidate and Union Minister Jitendra Singh and 11 others, including his main opponent and INDIA bloc candidate Choudhary Lal Singh.

“Modi government is working with a motto of ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas’ and dedicated to service, good governance and well-being of the poor which will be further strengthened in the next five years,” said Thakur, who reached here for the third time to garner support for BJP candidates.

“The Modi government ensured justice for all including those who were deprived of their rights in Jammu and Kashmir under the garb of Article 370,” he added. Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, the BJP leader said its leaders Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi are claiming that Modi will change the Constitution if he returns to power for the third term.

“The Constitution was given to us by B R Ambedkar whom we are taking in high esteem and honour him. It was the Congress which made amendments in the Constitution 62 times, including 17 during Pandit Nehru’s prime ministership and 33 times during Indira Gandhi’s rule,” Thakur said.

He accused the Congress of making compromises with the national interests by conceding land to Pakistan (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir), China (Aksai Chin) and Sri Lanka (Katchatheevu Island) in the past. “We give top priority to our national interests and India is first for us unlike the Congress,” Thakur said.

The BJP leader said the Indian economy jumped to fifth position in the world and the Modi government is working to make it the third largest economy in the world. “It is possible if you vote for Modi to make him the prime minister for the third term. Modi is the one who strengthened our borders, equipped our defence forces with modern weapons and fighter planes and a free hand,” Thakur said.

“The nation is aware of the surgical strikes in Pakistan and a befitting response to China in Ladakh,” he added. The minister said the terror incidents in Kashmir have shown a decline as was evident from 81 per cent drop in civilian killings and 50 per cent drop in the killing of security personnel.

“Tiranga is our pride but some people in Srinagar used to desecrate it. I took out a march in 2011 from Kolkata to Kashmir against this but was imprisoned by the Omar Abdullah led National Conference government. Today, the atmosphere has altogether changed after the abrogation of Article 370 by the BJP and the tricolor is fluttering high there,” he said.

Seeking votes for Jitendra Singh, Thakur said the BJP restored peace in Jammu and Kashmir which is the biggest achievement for the party.

“Terror acts were the major hurdle in attracting tourists to the picturesque region. Last year, over two crore tourists visited J&K and the number is expected to cross three crore this year,” he said.

The BJP leader said the assembly elections along with restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir are going to take place in the coming months.

Talking to reporters later, Thakur said India is not in favour of war among any country. “We are not in favour of war (between Israel and Iran) and always support peace.”

He criticized the Congress, National Conference and PDP, and said they always worked for their families without caring for the welfare of the masses. Thakur lauded the sacrifice of the people of Kishtwar who stood with the security forces to defeat terrorism from their soil. “Those who laid down their lives for the country will always be remembered,” he said.

I have also directed the commissioner of police to provide additional security for Salman Khan and his family. It is our duty to take care of our people. I don’t want to comment on what happened during the previous government, but we will act decisively against all the gangs and goons who try to bring harm to anyone in the state,” CM Shinde added.

Veteran screenwriter and Salman’s father, Salim Khan, former MLA Baba Siddiqui, his son and MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui and Yuva Sena’s Rahul Kanal were also present during the meeting. In the immediate aftermath of the incident on Sunday, last week, CM Shinde spoke to Salman over the phone and provided him with additional security cover.

Shinde also brought up the firing incident with the Mumbai Police Commissioner and suggested increasing the superstar’s security.

He assured Salman that the government was with him and he need not worry. Earlier, on Tuesday, Kutch Police arrested the two accused persons and handed them to the Mumbai Crime Branch. Later, a city court sent the two accused to the custody of the Mumbai Crime Branch until April 25 in connection with the firing incident.

The accused, identified as Vicky Gupta (24) and Sagar Pal (21) from Bihar, were presented before the court after a medical examination.

The two men, who came on a motorbike, fired four rounds outside the Galaxy Apartments, where the actor resides, around 5 am on Sunday morning and fled. CCTV footage showed that both accused sported caps and carried backpacks.

The clip also showed them firing in the direction of the actor’s home. After the arrest of the accused, Kutch DSP AR Zankant said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were in contact with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

“Mumbai Police is investigating the case of firing outside the residence of actor Salman Khan. We informed the Kutch Police that the two accused had fled to the Gujarat district. Different teams were formed to catch the accused. They were eventually arrested by the Kutch Police and handed over to the Mumbai Police. During primary interrogation of the accused, we learned that they were in contact with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang,” DSP Zankant said.

Notably, since November 2022, Salman’s security level has been elevated to Y-Plus after threats from gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. The actor was also authorised top carry a personal firearm and has also acquired a new armoured vehicle for added protection.

On Monday, Salman’s brother Arbaaz Khan issued a statement on the family’s behalf, saying they all have been affected due to the ‘disturbing’ firing incident.

“The recent incident of firing by two unidentified person in a motorcycle at Galaxy apartment the residence of the Salim Khan family is very disturbing and unnerving. Our family has been taken aback by this shocking incident that took place. Unfortunately, some people claiming to be close to our family and pretending to be the spokesperson have been making loose statements to the media saying it’s all a publicity stunt and the family remains unaffected which is not true and these views should not be taken seriously,” the statement read.

He also shared that the family was fully cooperating with the Mumbai Police in the ongoing probe into the incident.

“No member of the Salim Khan family has made any statement regarding this incident to the media. At this time, the family is helping and cooperating with the police in the investigation of this untoward incident. We have faith in the Mumbai police and we have been assured they will do everything in their capacity to protect and secure our family.

Thank you everyone for your love and support,” Arbaaz added in his statement.

Don’t vote for the corrupt Congress party: Nirmala Sitharaman

Jaipur: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday urged the voters of Rajasthan not to support the Congress party as it is ‘corrupt’.

She stressed the importance of re-electing PM Narendra Modi for the state’s progress.

“Don’t come back, this was the slogan by the people of the state that’s why their government lost power… I request all the voters of the state that don’t vote for the corrupt Congress party… PM Modi has to be made the PM again for the development of the state,” she said at a press conference in Jaipur.

She accused the Congress party of raising public issues, only to forget them once in power.

“Only to make promises for elections, mislead the public, get votes and then forget about it, the Congress party is an expert in this matter… Talking to the public, raising their issues, and after raising them, sitting in power and then forgetting (people issues), this is the attitude of Congress, not ours,” she said.

In 2014 BJP won all 25 parliamentary seats in the state. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP won 24 out of 25 seats in the state, while Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) secured the remaining one seat.

Bypolls for 26 Assembly seats in the state will also be held alongside the Lok Sabha elections. Nearly 96.8 crore people are eligible to cast their votes in the upcoming general elections at over 12 lakh polling stations.

The 25 parliamentary constituencies of Rajasthan will go to the polls in two phases.

In Phase 1 of polling in the state on April 19, which is also the opening phase of the seven-phased elections, voting will be conducted for 12 seats. The remaining 13 seats in the state will be contested in the second phase on April 26.

HC urges Centre to consider objections before finalizing dog breed ban

HC urges Centre to consider objections before finalizing dog breed ban

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to consider objections raised by stakeholders on a fresh draft notification before imposing a ban on sale and breeding of several breeds of ferocious dogs.

The high court passed the order after the counsel for the central government admitted that except for government bodies, no private entity or stakeholder was heard before the earlier notification was issued.

“Since it is not possible to give an oral hearing to each and every dog owner, this court directs the Union of India to issue a public notice on its official website and one national daily inviting objections to the proposed draft notification/ amendment to the rules,” a bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora said.

The high court said the objections filed in response to the government’s advertisement/ notice published on its website and newspaper shall be considered before finalising the notification.

The court passed the order while disposing of a batch of petitions challenging the Centre’s March 12 notification on the ground that the ban was imposed on 23 dog breeds without consulting or inviting objections and suggestions from stakeholders.

The petitioners submitted that the circular was perverse and illegal as it was passed in violation of an earlier undertaking given to the court that due opportunity will be given to all stakeholders to present their views.

On April 10, the Karnataka High Court quashed the Centre’s March 12 circular banning the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of ferocious dogs.

It said the central government could not have imposed a blanket ban on these breeds through a circular in the absence of any such power available under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 or the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules.

During the hearing before the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, central government’s standing counsel Rajesh Gogna submitted that stakeholders would mean every dog owner and giving a hearing to each one of them is not possible. He urged the court for protection against the Karnataka High Court order. The bench did not concur with his view and said it would not mean every dog owner as everyone cannot be heard. It said people can file their objections to the government over its decision in writing.

On March 12, the Centre had directed states to ban the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of ferocious dogs, including Pitbull Terriers, American Bulldog, Rottweilers and Mastiffs, amid rising instances of pet dog attacks. The directive issued to states and Union Territories bars people from keeping these 23 breeds of dogs as pets.

In a letter to the chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories, the Union government’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying also said these breeds of dogs already kept as pets should be sterilised to prevent further breeding.
