SC to hear CM Kejriwal’s plea against arrest by ED on Monday

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear incarcerated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea on April 15 (Monday), against his arrest and remand by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the excise policy case.

A division bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta is slated to take up the matter for hearing.

Kejriwal had moved the top court after the Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed his petition challenging his arrest and the trial court order remanding him to the federal anti-money laundering agency’s custody.

A bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma took note of the ED’s submission that the agency had enough material, including statements from approvers and allegations of involvement in the formulation of the excise policy, which had led them to arrest him.

On Wednesday, the accused moved the apex court seeking an urgent hearing on his plea challenging the high court’s order.

However, a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of CM Kejriwal and mentioned the matter for urgent hearing, to send an email.

The high court had said: “The files and material placed before us reveal that the mandate of law was followed by the ED. The trial court order is not a two-line order. The statements with ED are of hawala dealers as well as AAP candidates in Goa elections.”

Earlier, immediately after he was taken into custody by the ED on March 21, CM Kejriwal moved the apex court seeking an urgent late-night hearing on his petition.

However, the very next day, before a special bench of the Supreme Court could commence hearing the matter, he withdrew his plea and decided to contest remand proceedings before the trial court.

NDA won’t get simple majority in LS polls: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

Mysuru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that the NDA will not get a simple majority in the Lok Sabha elections and BJP’s slogan of “ab ki baar 400 paar” (winning more than 400 seats this time) is just a poll strategy.

Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah said, “INDIA bloc will get the majority.”

On Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled visit to Mysuru city on Sunday, the Chief Minister said, “I have no problem with the Prime Minister visiting the state. However, the people of the state should be told what his government has done for it.”

Siddaramaiah said they (the BJP) should answer people as to why “nothing has been done” so far on the issues facing the state — unemployment and drought.

Responding to PM Modi’s statement that even if Babasaheb Ambedkar comes himself, the Constitution cannot be changed and that BJP is in favour of the Constitution, the CM asked why action has not been taken against sitting BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde.

He said that Anantkumar Hegde was not given a ticket based on reports that he would lose the election.

Hegde stirred controversy by stating that the Constitution would be changed if the BJP got an absolute majority. However, the BJP had distanced itself from his statements.

“BJP is not in favour of the Constitution. Savarkar and Golwalkar have opposed the implementation of the Constitution,” Siddaramaiah said.

Annual 61-day fishing ban on Tamil Nadu coast from April 15

Chennai: The annual 61-day fishing ban on the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu will commence on April 15, and will extend till June 14. The ban will be effective from Sunday midnight.

The fishing ban is imposed to preserve the fishing resources. During this ban, big mechanised boats, including barges, are not allowed to fish.

The state government had provided an amount of Rs 6,000 per fisherman’s family during this ban period.

While speaking to IANS, Antony Fernandes, a fishermen leader from Kasimedu, said: “Last year, the government provided Rs 6,000 per family during this ban period, and this year, we are expecting the dole amount to be raised to Rs 8,000.”

These boats are anchored at the harbour.

However, there is no ban on local fishermen fishing using country boats, Kettuvallams and Kattumaram.

On peak days, the Kasimedu fishing harbour in Chennai gets around 300 tonnes of fish daily, while on other days, it is around 200 tonnes.

With the annual ban in effect, there will be an acute shortage of fish in the market, leading to an increase in prices.

PM Modi urges creators to develop games on global issues like climate change

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, said that Indian creators must build games which address global issues like climate change and cleanliness, among others, while innovating for the world.

In a chat with some of the top Indian gamers like Animesh Agarwal, Mithilesh Patankar, Payal Dhare, Naman Mathur and Anshu Bisht, the Prime Minister said that, unlike shooting games the Western world produces, our games must also address real-life issues.

“World leaders talk about global warming and climate change and are trying various methods to deal with those. I have laid out an alternative method called ‘Mission Life: Lifestyle for Environment’,” PM Modi told the gamers.

“Now, envision a game aimed at addressing the global climate crisis, where the gamer must explore various methods and solutions to identify the most sustainable approach. What are these steps? Who do we navigate through and find the best possible approach?” the Prime Minister noted.

Similarly, a game could revolve around cleanliness, and every child in the country should play such games and understand the true significance of gaming.

“Create games for change which will not only solve local problems but also address global issues,” PM Modi told the gamers.

Australia and Delhi Capitals (DC) batter David Warner‘s latest collaboration with Telugu director SS Rajamouli has taken the internet by storm. In an advertisement for Cred, an Indian fintech company, Warner can be seen donning a persona inspired from Rajamouli’s mega blockbuster movie – Bahubali. The ad perfectly depicts Warner’s love for Telugu movies, and his antics throughout the cameo made Rajamouli a frustrated figure. The ad was also shared by Warner on his official Instagram handle. In the ad, Warner can be seen recreating some hit scenes and also performed a few dance moves.

“See you at the Oscars?” Warner can be heard as saying to Rajamouli in one of the segments.

Warner’s fascination for Telugu movies and culture began during his stint with the SunRisers Hyderabad in IPL.

He often shares videos and mashups of him dancing to a Telugu songs. Even his wife and daughters have also been part of his Instagram videos.

Warner played eight seasons for SRH between 2014 and 2021, captaining the franchise to their only title in 2016.

However, Warner had an ugly exit from SRH after his relationship with the management went south.

A season later, he was picked up by the Delhi Capitals, the franchise which he made his debut with in the IPL back when they were called the Delhi Daredevils.

Warner led DC in the absence of Rishabh Pant last season after the wicketkeeper-batter missed the season due to a life-threatening car accident.

However, Pant resumed his captaincy duty ahead of this season. While DC finished second to bottom last season, they are currently last in the 10-team table having won just one game from a possible five.

So far this season, Warner has scored 158 runs at an average of 31.60 and a strike rate of over 142, with a half-century to his name. His best score is 52 came during their only win  of so far against the Chennai Super Kings in Visakhapatnam.

Who Is Jake Fraser-McGurk? DC Star Who Scored Half-Century On IPL Debut

Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk had a debut to remember in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as helped Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) with a finely-crafted half-century. On just the second delivery he faced, Fraser-McGurk sent Yash Thakur‘s delivery for a six over deep mid-wicket. However, it wasn’t the end of the Fraser-McGurk show in Lucknow as he took Krunal Pandya to the cleaners, smashing the India all-rounder for three sixes on the bounce. His 55-run knock, however, came to an end when he holed out to Arshad Khan.

But his carnage helped DC register a six-wicket win, just their second of the IPL 2024 and it took them out of the bottom spot in the points table.

Who is Jake Fraser-McGurk?

Fraser-McGurk, born on April 11 2002, celebrated his 22nd birthday on the eve of his IPL debut.

He went unsold during the IPL 2024 auction but joined DC as a replacement for the injured South African pacer Lungi Ngidi.

The Victorian has represented Australia through various under-age teams including the Australian U/19 side in 2019. So far, he has also played twice for the senior team, a couple of ODIs.

He made his Shield and Marsh Cup debuts for Victoria in the early rounds of the 2019/2020 season and performed well, making a 50 in both of his maiden appearances, all before his 18th birthday.

Fraser-McGurk holds the record for scoring the fastest List-A hundred off 29 balls, surpassing the previous record of 31 balls by AB De Villiers.

After starring with the bat on his debut, Fraser-McGurk said he was desperate to perform after sitting out initially.

“Spent five, six games on the sidelines itching to get out there, stoked! Was just more about trying not to swing too hard and lose shape. That’s what I’ve done over the last 12 months. I loved the one over cover, pretty happy with that. Don’t usually hit many over the offside. Batting out of the Power-play is something am continuing to learn, it’ll come with experience. I’m so happy to be here, different world in terms of cricket. Never seen anything like it, to be able to savour eight weeks, hopefully, more, is amazing,” McGurk said at the post-match presentation.

Regional Tensions Soar As Iran Preps To Attack Israel: 10 Points

Regional Tensions Soar As Iran Preps To Attack Israel: 10 Points

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes on both sides of the border

Regional tensions have soared after Iran threatened reprisals over an Israeli strike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus this month that killed two Iranian generals.

Here are 10 points on the big story

  1. Since Iran viewed the embassy strike as equivalent to an attack on its own territory, sources say, a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran itself rather than a proxy such as Hezbollah in Lebanon was a real possibility.

  2. Countries including India, France and Russia have warned their citizens against travel to the region, already on edge over the war in Gaza, now in its seventh month.

  3. US President Joe Biden said he was expecting Iran to attempt to strike Israel in the short term and pledged “ironclad” support for Washington’s top regional ally despite diplomatic tensions over Israel’s military conduct in Gaza. “We are devoted to the defense of Israel, we will support Israel, we will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” he said.

  4. Iranian sources and diplomats from the US say Tehran has signalled to Washington that it wishes to avoid escalation and will not act hastily.

  5. A defence official said the Pentagon was “moving additional assets to the region to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces.”

  6. Washington, which has had no diplomatic relations with Tehran since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution, also asked its allies to use their influence with Iran to urge restraint.

  7. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had warned earlier this week that Israel “must be punished and will be punished”, days after one of his advisers said Israeli embassies are “no longer safe”.

  8. The Israeli military said it had not issued fresh instructions to civilians, but that its forces were on high alert and prepared for a range of scenarios.

  9. Iran has missiles capable of hitting Israel directly and in recent weeks, Israel has bolstered its air defences, which have intercepted thousands of rockets fired by Hamas from Gaza and by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

  10. Tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes on both sides of the border. The Israeli military has called back reservists in preparation for any escalation along its northern border, where it exchanges fire almost daily with Hezbollah.

Donald Trump Says He Will Testify In Hush Money Criminal Trial

Trump said he will be testified in his criminal trial of hush money that starts on Monday.

Washington:

Former US president Donald Trump said Friday that he plans to take the stand in his criminal trial for illegal payment of hush money that starts in New York on Monday.

Asked by reporters at his luxury Florida home whether it would be legally risky to testify, Trump responded: “I’m testifying. I tell the truth. I mean, all I can do is tell the truth and the truth is there’s no case.”

Explained: How Could Iran Seek To Punish Israel

Explained: How Could Iran Seek To Punish Israel

Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has threatened that Israel “must be punished and shall be.”

Iran has vowed to punish Israel over a recent strike on its Damascus consulate widely blamed on Israel, and fears are rising that an imminent response could risk triggering a broader conflict.

However there are a number of different ways that Iran could retaliate, and not all pose the same risk of escalation, according to experts.

With warnings building on Friday that a response could come soon, France advised its citizens not to travel to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Iran or its ally Lebanon.

But exactly what happens next likely depends on how Iran chooses to carry out its retaliation, which would likely come against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas.

The fact that none of the governments involved want to provoke an escalation does not necessarily protect against a full-scale crisis breaking out, said David Khalfa, Middle East specialist at the French think tank Jean-Jaures Foundation.

“Miscalculations are entirely possible. Deterrence has an eminently psychological aspect,” he told AFP.

“The belligerents are at the mercy of any mistake or slip-up that could cause a cascading series of consequences.”

The air strike that struck Iran’s consulate building in the Syrian capital on April 1 killed 16 people, including seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

The most senior figure killed was Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force, which runs Iran’s foreign military operations.

Iran and Syria have blamed the attack on Israel, which has not confirmed its involvement but is widely considered to be responsible — including by its allies.

– ‘Tehran does not want direct war’ –

“Israel’s air strike on the facility was intended to tell Tehran that it will be held accountable for the actions of Hamas and other non-state allies such as Lebanese Hezbollah and the Huthis in Yemen,” said the Soufan Center, a non-profit organisation that analyses global security challenges.

After the strike, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel “must be punished and will be punished”.

The White House, which has maintained the United States would stand firm behind its ally Israel, emphasised on Friday that Iran’s threats were “real”.

The US also sent its top commander for the Middle East, US Central Command chief Michael Kurilla, to Israel to talk things over.

Iran has an arsenal capable of hitting a wide range of Israeli targets, including infrastructure, airports or key energy production sites.

The Soufan Center said that the posture adopted by Israel and the United States “suggests they expect Tehran to conduct its attack using its arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as armed drones”.

But since the consulate attack, Iran has remained vague about exactly how it will respond.

Eva Koulouriotis, an independent Middle East analyst, said: “Iran is still threatening to respond while sending regional and international messages that it is looking for a political option alternative to a military response.

“What is certain is that Tehran does not want a direct war with Israel, at least at the current stage,” she told AFP.

– ‘Only bad choices’ –

Iran is “facing a dilemma,” Michel Duclos, a former French diplomat, wrote on the website of the Institut Montaigne think tank.

“It is undoubtably not sure enough of its strength that it could consider an escalation with Israel with a light heart,” he wrote.

“If however it does not respond, it risks losing some credibility in the region, including among armed groups who pledge allegiance” to Iran, he added.

Iran sponsors armed groups in Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Lebanon which make up the so-called “Axis of Resistance” against Israel and they seem to be on the front line more than ever, said Farzan Sabet, an analyst at the Geneva Graduate Institute.

Iran could potentially respond by requesting these groups ramp up the number of their attacks, or increase weapon deliveries, Sabet wrote on X.

“This option is more deniable, lower political cost, and less chance of direct blowback.”

Other possible options including a strike against Israeli diplomatic missions abroad, which would have the disadvantage of involving a third country.

Iran could also attempt “terrorist attacks on US diplomatic facilities in or outside the region,” the Soufan Center said.

Khalfa said that with the April 1 strike, “Israel wanted to change the rules of the game by hitting the head of the octopus, not just its tentacles, to force Iran out of the shadow war.”

Now, “the Iranians only have bad choices at their disposal,” he added.
