SCR commissions record 148 three-phase electric locomotives during last financial year

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) has commissioned a record 148 new three phase electric locomotives during the last financial year, which is the highest-ever number in any year. This is 45 per cent more when compared with the previous best of 102 three phase locomotives commissioned in 2022-23.

The SCR has taken up electrification of rail routes across the zone on a large scale and all the traffic running routes of its network are now electrified, except for the new lines which have been recently constructed lines which are fully or partly under construction.

The three phase electric locomotives being added to the fleet of SCR have considerable advantages over other traction technologies. These locos have high horse power and can easily haul a full-length 22 LHB coach passenger train at 130 kmph without any hassle.

They also offer a high balancing speed even for freight traffic and reduce the transit time for moving cargo, thereby improving the productivity of rolling stocks.

The new locos are also fitted with Head-on-Generation systems (HOG) for powering the coaches which drastically reduce the use of diesel power cars for powering the rakes and thus saves fuel bill.

The improved availability of electric locomotives in the zone facilitated switching over of 46 pairs of coaching trains from diesel to electric traction in the FY 23-24, which will save Rs 204 crore per annum on the fuel bill of the railways and reduce carbon emission.

Telangana to write to Centre to spare NSP water

Hyderabad: Besides identifying six major sources from where water can be drawn reaching out to their minimum drawdown levels (MDDLs) to address the water scarcity concerns, the State is seeking the intervention of the Ministry of Jal Shakti to give precedence to the drinking water needs of Telangana over the irrigation needs of Andhra Pradesh in sharing the Krishna river water, especially the limited water available in the Nagarjuna Sagar Project.

The State will be writing to Ministry of Jal Shakti seeking immediate steps to stop release of two TMC water allotted of late to AP and spare whatever little is left in the project only for meeting the drinking water needs in Telangana. The State authorities are also keen on prevailing on their AP counterparts on this count. They intend to assure AP that the water share they could spare for meeting the emergency situation in Telangana, can be availed once the things improved after May next.

The State Irrigation authorities have been drawing 1500 cusecs from the Nagarjuna Sagar project from April 1 as the storage in the drinking water sources in three districts- Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam touched rock bottom level. The Palair balancing reservoir was partly filled on priority basis along with other projects and tanks as a precautionary measure. The left canal will be closed on a day or two, but the water drawls to meet the drinking water needs in Hyderabad will continue.

The irrigation officials said arrangement have to be made for pumping water from six sources – Nagarjuna Sagar project, Srisailam, Osman Sagar, Himayatsagar and Yellampallai. The Singur project will be kept stand by as part of the arrangement. The NSP would be the more dependable source where from some ten tmc could made available by drawing water up to the depth of 505 ft as against the MDDL of 510 ft. The Himayat Sagar and Osmansagar projects would be able to yield some five tmc to meet the crisis. The Yellampalli project has about seven tmc of water available.

AP has already complained to the KRMB opposing the drawls by Telangana from the Nagarjuna Sagar project while the latter has been contending that it has till been left with an unutilised entitlement up to some eight tmc for the current water year.

AP had drawn more than 100 tmc of water over and above its entitlement in a single water year in the past, said officials.

Presence of rogue elephant makes gathering of Mahua flowers risky

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Gathering of flowers, an important means of livelihood for tribals in summer, has turned into a risky affair in the wake of movement of the rogue elephant, which trampled two farmers to death in Kaghaznagar forest division in the gap of 24 hours.

Mahua trees reached the flowering stage with the onset of summer. Gathering of these yellow-colored flowers, a forest miner product gained momentum in forest fringe villages across Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts. Tribals traditionally collect the fluffy flowers for the purpose of self-consumption as snacks and can generate substantial income by selling dried flowers.

“Tantalizing aroma released by the tender yet juicy Mahua flowers can attract the elephants. Collectors of the flowers are prone to be attacked by the tusker, which tend to wander in the forests in search of food and water at night and morning. The tribals should stop this activity for a while,” Venkat, a wildlife expert told ‘Telangana Today.’

The forest officials have already issued a warning about the movement of the elephant in at least 20 villages of Chintalamanepalli, Bejjur, Penchikalpet mandal and Dahegaon mandal. They carried out extensive publicity over the consequence of venturing outdoors using various means including tom-tom. The Section 144 of CrPC was also imposed in villages likely to be strayed by the tusker.

Unmindful of the warning, tribesmen and women are reportedly entering the wild in search of the Mahua flowers. But, they are facing the threat from the elephant, which crushed two farmers to death at Burepalli village in Chintalamanepalli mandal and at Kondapalli in Penchikalpet mandal in two separate incidents that occurred on Wednesday and Thursday. There were instances of attacks on the tribals by sloth bears in the past.

District Forest Officer Neeraj Kumar Tebriwal advised the tribals not to step in the wild not only for Mahua flowers, but any other minor forest product in the light of the tusker’s presence.
