Chicken prices shoot through the roof, cross Rs 300 a kilo

Karimnagar: There is a sudden spurt in the prices of chicken, with a hike of Rs.80 to Rs.100 per kg within the span of a week.

The situation is not restricted to Karimnagar and is being reported from different parts of the State. A kilogram of skinless chicken is now being sold at Rs.320 in the retail market, while wholesale traders are selling a kilo of skinless chicken at Rs.300.

Many attribute the price rise to the summer. The production of chicken usually declines as small poultry farm owners stay away from the activity to avoid losses since it is more expensive to protect birds from the soaring heat.

Unable to tolerate the heat, chicken die in large numbers in many poultry farms, dealers pointed out, adding this was leading to a shortage and subsequent spurt in prices. One week ago, the price of a kg of chicken was between Rs.180 to Rs.220.

However, the price graph started soaring by the end of March. Speaking to Telangana Today, Raju, owner of Jyothy Chicken Centre, said they were forced to hike the price due to the shortage of chicken.

Though it was a common thing for production to decline in summer, this year the shortage had hit the market much earlier than usual, he said.

A wholesale trader, Pasha informed that small poultry farmers would not grow chickens in summer since it was very difficult to protect birds from soaring heat conditions.

Only large scale farmers would grow chickens by taking special precautions including arranging air coolers and other measures.

Unable to bear running costs, Hyderabad cab drivers launch ‘No AC campaign’

Hyderabad: Telangana Gig and Platform Workers union (TGPWU) has announced the launch of ‘No AC campaign’ in response to the challenges faced by drivers working with Uber, Ola, and Rapido apps.

Shaik Salauddin, the founder president of TGPWU, highlighted the inability of drivers to activate the air conditioning (AC) in their cabs due to diminishing per-kilometer fares.

“In Hyderabad, operating the AC significantly raises fuel and maintenance costs, which are estimated at Rs 16-18 per kilometer. After factoring in commissions from Uber, Ola, and Rapido, drivers only earn around Rs 10 per kilometer. This financial strain has led to a decline in the quality of rides offered,” Salauddin said.

The campaign urges customers to understand the financial challenges faced by drivers and to consider tipping if they wish to use the AC during rides.

Furthermore, TGPWU calls upon the State government to implement uniform fares per kilometer for all app-based taxis and ensure platform companies’ compliance with government regulations. The union highlights that while inconvenience is not their intention, the lack of response to their requests has left them with no choice but to launch this campaign.

If their demands are not met promptly, TGPWU warns of potential nationwide action in collaboration with trade unions from other states.

Hyderabad: BJP Legislative Party leader and Nirmal MLA A Maheshwar Reddy blamed the Congress government for drought like situation in the State and farmers suicide.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Reddy said the farmers in the State were suffering due to the inefficiency of the State government. “This government is not able to provide water for irrigation. Farmers are committing suicide as their crops are getting dry due to lack of water. Congress government’s inefficiency was responsible to the present State of the farmers,”he alleged.

Coming down heavily on the Congress, the BJP MLA said the government failed to disburse Rs. 7,000 crore allocated for the Rythu Bandhu scheme by the BRS government. “The Congress government which promised to release the Rythu Bandhu scheme funds after coming to power diverted it for other purposes,”he alleged.

Congress promised to waive farm loans upto Rs. 2 lakh and provide Rs. 15,000 per acre under Rythu Bandhu to farmers, tenant farmers and agricultural labourers, but so far it had not taken any step in that direction, he said.
