KTR urges action on Unemployment, especially among IIT graduates

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao highlighted the alarming issue of unemployment, particularly among IIT graduates, calling for urgent attention ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He emphasised the significance of addressing this pressing concern, especially for a nation with the largest youth population globally.

In response to reports of over 36 per cent IIT Bombay students not getting placement, Rama Rao stressed the need for meaningful discussions on unemployment as a top priority during the electoral process. “If the famed IIT graduates are having a hard time getting placed, isn’t it a telling sign of unemployment in the country? Isn’t this the most important issue we (as a nation with largest number of youngsters on the planet) should be discussing especially as we are about to elect a new Union Government? (sic),” he wondered.

Oppn parties being forced to ‘surrender’, says KTR

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president K T Rama Rao on Tuesday alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was trying to force the opposition parties to ‘surrender’ before them by misusing CBI, ED, and other central agencies.

Calling the BJP a ‘washing machine’, he claimed that 23 out of 25 opposition leaders, who had earlier faced allegations, got clean chit after joining the saffron party.

“Their intention is, you be subservient to us or we will put you in jail. Modi ji is trying to increase their political influence by using ED, CBI like hunting dogs. It will have its impact,” he said.

“Kavitha ji was arrested. Why? To make KCR surrender to them. Arvind Kejriwal ji was arrested. Why? Aam Admi Party should support them politically,” Rao said.

Similarly, then Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested and a case was recently registered against the daughter of Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan to make them “surrender”, he alleged.

Claiming that the BJP may succeed in making some leaders “surrender” or threaten some parties due to these alleged pressure tactics, Rao said he was confident that people would give an appropriate verdict on all these issues.

Noting that the BRS would soon be entering into the 24th year of its formation during which it had seen many ups and downs, Rao claimed that his party was the true champion of the Telangana people’s cause.

It will continue to do well as long as it has people’s support though some leaders might have left the party, he said. Rao expressed confidence that the BRS would win 9-10 seats in the LS polls like it did in 2019.

He described the present elections as a contest between the “reality of 10 years of BRS rule” and the “lie” of 100 days of Congress rule in Telangana, alleging that the Congress government had not fulfilled several of its election promises. He also accused CM Revanth Reddy of failing to deliver on several of his poll promises, including Rs 2 lakh farm loan waiver and Rs 2,500 per month for women.

During the BRS regime, welfare schemes like ‘Rythu Bandhu’, social security pensions, water and electricity supply were implemented effectively, he said

Ethical dilemma of euthanasia

This poses a new challenge to policymakers as they grapple to find a balance between individual autonomy and exploring all medical options to save lives.

Ethical dilemma of euthanasia

This poses a new challenge to policymakers as they grapple to find a balance between individual autonomy and exploring all medical options to save lives.

The right to death with dignity is as important as the right to live. The recognition of an individual’s right to exercise bodily autonomy is a sign of maturity in any evolved society.

However, each case needs to be addressed with sensitivity and compassion.

The recent case of a troubled 28-year-old Dutch woman choosing to end her life through euthanasia, due to a mental health condition, autism and personality disorder, has rekindled the debate on mercy killing and the ethical issues involved in it. Since the woman’s physical health is fine, allowing assisted suicide in this case has raised some disturbing questions.

This poses a new challenge to policymakers as they grapple to find a balance between individual autonomy and exploring all medical options to save lives.

The mental health conditions cited as reasons by the Dutch woman to end her life are not considered untreatable diseases.

In such cases, it would be unethical to allow assisted suicide in the name of ending suffering and honouring an individual’s right to die with dignity.

While advocates of euthanasia may argue for the right to autonomy and relief from unbearable suffering, it is essential to approach such cases with utmost caution. Mental health issues, however complex they may be, are treatable with appropriate interventions.

Permitting euthanasia might, in such cases, inadvertently shift the focus away from providing comprehensive mental healthcare and support to individuals grappling with terminal illness.

The focus should be on comprehensive mental healthcare and psychosocial support to address suffering and promote resilience.

The Netherlands is one of a handful of countries in the world where euthanasia is legal. In India, the 2018 Supreme Court verdict, allowing passive euthanasia and recognising the right to die with dignity as a fundamental right in the spirit of Article 21, was truly a landmark and reflected maturity.

The judicial approval for ‘Living Will’ came as a huge relief for those who want to exit this world with dignity instead of prolonging their suffering by extending the life support system in a vegetative condition.

‘Living Will’ empowers individuals of sound mind and health to leave explicit instructions in advance about the medical treatment to be administered when they become terminally ill and can declare in advance that their life must not be prolonged if they slide into a vegetative state.

While seeking to find a balance in the relationship between life, death and morality, the apex court had rightly pointed out that burdening a dying patient with life-prolonging treatment would be destructive of his or her dignity and in such a situation individual interest has to be given priority over the state interest.

Legitimising the system of Living Will would free the family members and doctors of the moral dilemma of how long to continue the life support system in clinically irretrievable cases.

Hyderabad: Alarmed by the distress signals being received with the depleting storage levels in irrigation projects supporting the drinking water supply system, the State government has knocked the doors of the Centre for additional releases from Nagarjuna Sagar Project.

It has already dashed off a letter to both the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Krishna River Management Board to this effect.

The State in fact wanted the precious little left in the project to be spared only for its drinking water needs. But both the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the KRMB are yet to respond to the special request made by the State.

Though the State has made the request in view of the gravity of the situation, the river management board did not respond so far, as it would amount to displeasing Andhra Pradesh, that too in an election year, sources said.

The Board officials made it clear that Telangana had already exhausted its allotted quota of 35 tmc for the current water year. In fact it had drawn more.

Its additional requirements could only be discussed in the three member committee meeting of the KRMB scheduled for April 12. AP officials have also been very firm on availing their entitled to meet its drinking water needs.

AP was also left with less than three TMC of unutilised share after their recent drawls from the right canal.

It started drawing water from Right canal once again on Monday and they were planning to avail another two tmc in the current spell.

So far as the indents made for meeting drinking water needs are concerned, the board will accord priority irrespective of the States making the request , they added.

The KRMB three member committee meeting is going to be the crucial one to discuss the sharing of water available above the MDDL (510 ft ) of the Nagarjuna Sagar.
