Karimnagar: While standing crops in hundreds of acres have already withered due to lack of water, several villages in the district are likely to face a drinking water shortage in the coming days.

Except a few, almost all water bodies have dried up due to the drought as well as the non-lifting of water from the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project. Earlier, the Irrigation department used to lift water from the Kaleshwaram project and fill all water bodies including irrigation projects, tanks and ponds. Besides supplying water to standing crops, the water was utilized to fulfill the drinking water needs of the people in summer.

The stored water would be supplied to the public through Mission Bhagiratha and other drinking water supply schemes in rural areas. As all water bodies have almost reached dead storage levels, officials feel supply of drinking water is going to turn a major concern in the coming days in villages.

Anticipating the drinking water scarcity, the State government has already appointed special officers to the district to take steps to overcome the problem. Director of Health and Family Welfare, RV Karnan, was appointed as special officer for the erstwhile Karimnagar district.

Karnan recently visited the district and conducted a review meeting with officials, asking them to take steps to overcome the drinking water scarcity. Rural Water Supply, Mission Bhagiratha, village special officers and panchayat secretaries have begun efforts to identify the problems in water supply.

In Karimnagar district, problems have been identified in the supply of drinking water in 21 villages including nine villages in Choppadandi mandal, six in Gangadhara mandal and six villages in other mandals. Anticipating the shortage, officials have taken up works with Rs.6.58 crore sanctioned to the district. Repair works of hand-pumps and motors have been taken up. Leakages in Mission Bhagiratha pipelines have also been rectified, they said.

Besides reviving defunct borewells, farmers’ borewells are also being used to draw drinking water.

Hyderabad: Stating that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was feeling insecure in the Congress, BJP Legislative Party leader A Maheshwar Reddy alleged that the Chief Minister was trying to come out of Congress and create his own separate group by poaching MLAs from other parties.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Maheshwar Reddy said the Chief Minister feared that a few Congress leaders were hatching a conspiracy to pull down his government. “To make his position strong in the party, the CM is trying to poach 25 MLAs from BRS and other parties. This was confirmed by Uttam Kumar Reddy, who claimed that 25 MLAs are in touch with the CM,” he said.

“Plan ‘A’ of Revanth Reddy is to know how many people will be with him if he is in Congress. And plan ‘B’ is to find out how many leaders will come out of the party if he forms his own party,” he said.

Stating that over 10 Congress leaders were competing for the post of Chief Minister, he said the Chief Minister was not comfortable in Congress as he had threats from his own party leaders. “CM himself declaring that Congress leaders are trying to defeat the party’s Mahabubnagar candidate in the Lok Sabha elections is an indication about the insecure situation prevailing in the party,”he said.

Responding to a question, the BJP legislative leader said no MLA from his party was in touch with the Chief Minister. “Even if the gates and the windows are opened no one will join Congress from BJP,”he asserted.

There were five Shinde’s in the Congress party, hence there was no need for other parties to pull down the government, he said. “We don’t have to do anything. They will fight among themselves and the government will collapse,”he said.

This design flaw is said to be a recurring factor in road accidents along this stretch.

Mancherial: Officials of National Highways Authority of India are drawing flak for failing to correct an alleged flaw in the design of a U turn on the National Highway 363 at Tirumala fuel station in Kannala village of Bellampalli mandal. The flaw in the designing of the turn is reportedly contributing to road mishaps on the stretch at regular intervals.

“The design of the U turn is flawed when compared to the other U turns situated on the same network. A gap in the median of the road should not intersect with the road for local habitations. A gap in the median should be for at least 800 meters on a stretch as per norms of union ministry of Road Transportation and Highways (MoRTH),” Neelam Sampath, a road safety activist from Kaghaznagar, said.

He pointed out that the gap should not be created when there was a slope on a road. Other U turns in Thandur mandal centre and Bellampalli have lamps signaling motorists about the intersection on the road. The turns have sign boards and relevant marking cautioning about the intersections. But, the U turn at Tirumala fuel station has no such lamps or sign boards.

Similarly, commercial establishments are situated within 100 metres of the national highway, flouting the norms of road safety. A fuel station and function hall can be found within 100 metres of the national highway at the U turn. Customers of the fuel and attendees of the social functions are suddenly entering the road at the turn causing accidents.

Incidentally, seven persons were killed at the U turn from January 2023 to February of 2024. In the latest instance, Kota Thirupati (38) and his wife Thirupathamma (33) from Venkatapur village in Kannepalli mandal died on the spot, while their seven-year-old son Anji succumbed to injuries later after a lorry hit the motorbike on which they were travelling at the U turn on the national highway on February 9.

When asked, NHAI Project Director KN Ajay Manikumar said the steps would be taken to correct the design of the U turn and to prevent road mishaps at the spot.

Sangareddy: Former Minister T Harish Rao has called the Medak Lok Sabha constituency an ‘adda’ of the BRS. Pointing out that the BRS had never lost any elections in Medak since 2004, he said party candidate P Venkatrami Reddy would win with a huge majority in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing the party cadre at the Ganesh Temple here after performing special pujas for campaign vehicles of Venkatrami Reddy near Patancheru on Wednesday, Harish Rao said the people of the State had started realising that the Congress could not keep the promises made during the assembly election campaign.

When former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao questioned the Congress government on their failure to extend the promised Rs.500 bonus to Yasangi paddy, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was using foul language to criticise Chandrashekhar Rao and other Opposition leaders.

Demanding an explanation from Revanth Reddy as to why he could not keep the promises made, Harish Rao asked him to keep the promises if he had any commitment instead of the criticising Opposition parties who were trying to raise the issues of the public. Venkatrami Reddy was a resident of Tellapur in Patancheru constituency for the last few years.

He had also worked as an officer for many years in erstwhile Medak district, he said. Narsapur MLA V Sunitha Lakshma Reddy and other BRS leaders were present.
