Hyderabad:BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday demanded that State government immediately implement the BC Declaration made by the Congress party during the Assembly elections in December last year. He also demanded for allocation of Rs.20,000 crore in the State budget towards implementation of the BC sub-plan, besides establishing the Most Backward Classes (MBC) department.
“It has become a habit for the Congress to make false promises to garner votes from different sections of the society and abandon them after coming to power. Despite promising to implement the BC sub-plan with Rs.20,000 crore, no monetary allocations were made in the recent ‘Vote on Account budget’ for the purpose. However, the BRS will play its role as the main opposition and ensure that all the electoral promises are implemented by the Congress over the next five years,” he said while addressing the 197th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday.
In commemoration of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s bicentenary celebrations to be held in 2027, Rama Rao advocated for the installation of a statue in his honour within the next three years. He highlighted the demand made by BRS MLC K Kavitha for installation of Phule’s statue on the Assembly premises.
He pointed out that the BRS gave the highest number of MP tickets to the BCs for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, compared to its political rivals which treat them as mere vote banks but refuse to give them appropriate opportunities. While five of 17 MP seats in the State were reserved, the BRS fielded BC candidates in six of the remaining 12 parliamentary constituencies.
The former Minister said the previous BRS government led by K Chandrashekhar Rao walked the path of Mahatma Phule and strove for equal opportunities and rights for all in terms of education and employment. He asserted the BRS’s commitment to providing advice and suggestions to the government as the main opposition in ensuring equality for all.
He stated that besides setting up 1,000 residential welfare educational institutions under the BRS regime, efforts were made to enable talented students from BC communities to pursue higher education abroad with a Rs.20 lakh overseas fellowship. The BRS government had also encouraged traditional and caste-based occupations by providing necessary financial support and skill development initiatives to enable people depending on them earn a remunerative livelihood.
“Former Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao took a political risk and implemented Dalit Bandhu and BC Bandhu for the socio-economic empowerment of these communities,” he said.
Former Speaker S Madhusudhanachari and former Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said Chandrashekhar Rao implemented the principles of Mahatma Phule to wipe out social inequality in Telangana through various initiatives.

Hyderabad: Upping the ante against MLAs who defected from the party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has decided to intensify its fight for their immediate disqualification. The party, which has approached the Telangana High Court for their disqualification, will now stage protests with funeral drum beats in front of the residences of all three BRS MLAs who defected to the ruling Congress recently. Party leaders demanded that the defected MLAs resign from their posts immediately.
Speaking to mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan here on Thursday, MLA KP Vivekananda and Padi Kaushik Reddy said the BRS had already lodged a complaint with Speaker Gaddam Prasad seeking immediate disqualification of MLAs Danam Nagender, Kadiyam Srihari and Tellam Venkat Rao who switched to the Congress. They advised the Telangana Assembly Speaker to follow the path of his Himachal Pradesh counterpart who disqualified Congress MLAs for defecting from the party.
“Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is trying to influence the office of the Assembly Speaker. He should be ashamed to release the Congress Lok Sabha election manifesto proposing for automatic disqualification of elected representatives defecting from their original parties, with BRS MLAs who defected to the Congress standing next to him. With its double standards, the Congress is losing its credibility in Telangana,” Vivekananda said.
Kaushik Reddy said the BRS was prepared to take the fight against defected MLAs to a logical conclusion and as part of these efforts, he had already approached the High Court against the undue delay by the Telangana Assembly Speaker to act upon the complaint lodged by the BRS and disqualify the MLAs accordingly. The High Court has posted the case for hearing on Monday, he said.
MLA Kova Lakshmi along with former MLAs A Jeevan Reddy and P Sasidhar Reddy were present.

Hyderabad: After protesting against the lack of water supply and demanding compensation for damaged crops, farmers are now moving into the next mode of agitation, with them being meted out a raw deal in purchase of paddy stocks by traders.
A protest on Wednesday in Jangaon has forced the State machinery into action, with cases booked against four traders. Farmers were finding themselves at the receiving end with traders offering Rs.500 to Rs.600 less than the minimum support price in Jangaon.
They staged a protest demonstration on Wednesday demanding the intervention of officials, forcing additional collector Rohit Singh to rush to the marketyard.
The farmers who threatened to burn their stocks out of sheer frustration, relented with the officers assuring them of a remunerative price by taking up the issue with the government.
The procurement exercise for the Rabi marketing season took off on a positive note, with the Civil Supplies Commissioner Devendar Singh Chouhan facilitating paddy purchases right from the last week of March.
With the Civil Supplies Commissioner, who was monitoring the paddy arrivals and purchases in the market yards almost on hourly basis, being away as election observer to Rajasthan, the services of the corporation began to waver.
The government also wrote to the Election Commission to exclude him from the election duty at this crucial juncture, but the Commission did not oblige, officials said.
As the Commissioner was briefed about the Jangaon episode, he ordered a probe into the issue and directed action against the market committee secretary concerned.
Four traders who sought to purchase the paddy from the farmers, offering as low as Rs.1551 per quintal on the pretext that the stocks had excessive moisture content and were poor in quality, were also booked.
Officials termed it “downright cheating” and liable for punishment as the government was firm on buying paddy at the MSP of Rs.2203 per quintal.
In the wake of the Jangaon incident, Civil Supplies officials in particular and the administration in all districts were put on alert, besides being tasked with the job of monitoring the paddy arrivals in marketyards.
Taking a serious note of the incident, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, in a post on X on Thursday, said the government was sincere in grain purchases.
Collusion of market committee officials with traders would not be tolerated, he said, asking the department to file criminal cases against the four traders who tried to cheat the farmers and congratulated the additional collector, who ordered the suspension of the market secretary on the spot in Jangaon.
The Chief Minister wanted officials across the State to be alert and ensure a fair deal for the farmers in grain purchases.
The Civil Supplies Corporation had decided to open 7149 paddy purchase centers, with officials claiming that 5422 of these were already functional in districts where arrivals started picking up.
Over 31,215 metric tonnes of paddy were procured at 443 centres from 4345 farmers, they said. Officials said the paddy purchase centres would commence procurement operations at 1727 more centres before the weekend. The Corporation is planning to procure at least 75.40 lakh metric tonnes in the Kharif marketing season.

Collector Dr. Priyanka Ala inspected paddy procurement centres in Annapureddypalle mandal in Kothagudem district on Thursday.
Kothaguedm: District Collector Dr. Priyanka Ala informed that as many as 128 paddy purchase centres have been sanctioned and started across the district to procure yasangi paddy.
The Collector inspected the paddy purchase centers set up by PACS at Paridhi Gumpena and Namavaram of Annapureddypalle mandal in the district on Thursday and told the officials to speed up paddy procurement as harvesting has been completed in many places.
Gunny bags, moisture testing devices, paddy cleaning machines and tarpaulins have been made available at each centre. The Collector enquired farmers about the yield and whether there were any problems with paddy procurement centres while asking them to take care of humidity and wastage.
Paddy should be sent to the mill to which it was tagged and the grain collected on the same day should be transported on the same day. A list of tenant farmers should be prepared and tokens should be given in advance and care should be taken to avoid difficulties in payment of money, Dr. Ala said.
The agricultural officials were directed to encourage the farmers to bring grain as per the quality standards. Later, the Collector inspected the water supply conditions in Namavaram village and asked the locals about the drinking water supply situation.
As the effect of the summer was likely to be high during this season the water resources in the villages should not be wasted and used properly. Even though there was no problem for drinking water in the district, people have to use water judiciously, Dr. Ala suggested.
If the public face problems with the drinking water supply, they should immediately bring it to the attention of the authorities. Officials should be available to the public and water sources such as hand pumps, boreholes and fresh water wells should be repaired and brought into use, she added.
